people must be stopped at the border and told they cannot come in illegally. if this is done, illegal immigration will be stopped in its tracks. build the wall. this morning, president trump is calling for a new hard line for dealing with undocumented immigrants. we cannot allow all of these people to invade our country. when somebody comes in, we should immediately bring them back from where they came. but that idea fails to recognize constitutional due process. long-established case law that grants that protection to non-citizens. the president floating the theory in recent days. >> i don't want judges. i want border security. >> reporter: it comes as the house is poised to vote on a gop compromise immigration bill this week. a top house republican says the president supports it despite mr. trump's friday tweet urging republicans to stop wasting their time on immigration until the midterm elections. >> i did talk to the white house yesterday. they say the president's still 100% behind this. >> reporter: democrats are

digging in. with chuck schumer calling on the white house to appoint a czar to get mie grant kids separated from their families out of limbo and back in their parents' arms. but the president has support from his own ranks with a recent poll showing 90% approve of the job he's doing. >> he's had to fight, fight, fight since he got in there. i'm supporting him 100%. >> reporter: but there's also a fierce backlash with sarah huckabee sanders. sanders tweeting from her government account saturday that she was told by the restaurant to leave because i work for potus. a server later showing this note that she was refused service. 86'd in restaurant jargon. angry supporters bombarding the post with negative reviews. there are moments when people

need to live their convictions. this appeared to be one. meanwhile, the first lady who visited kids on the border last week calling for empathy at an event for students overnight. >> kindness, compassion, and positivity are very -- is are very important traits in life. >> and kristen, on another note, nbc is out with an exclusive report that talks about the unrest between the president and the secretary of defense. so what's going on with that? >> reporter: that's right. and hoda, this is according to current and former administration officials who tell nbc news defense secretary james mattis is increasingly out of the loop and the president doesn't always consult him on major security issues. mattis was caught off guard by a number of recent announcements including the president's decision to withdraw from the iran nuclear deal, his plan to pause military exercises with south korea, and even his move to create a sixth military

branch overseeing operations in space. so a senior white house official says mattis has never been one of the go-tos in the gang that's close to the president. but also said the president has a lot of respect for him. a pentagon spokesperson down played all of this saying it's pure silliness and a spokesperson for the national security council called it ludicrous to suggest mattis is out of the loop. >> you'll stay on top of it. thank you. as washington argues what's next in the immigration battle, families separated at the border by the president's zero tolerance policy are now struggling to reunite. gabe gutierrez is with us now from texas. what's the latest there? >> reporter: good morning. the government insists that it knows the location of all the children in its custody and is working hard to reunite them. but there are about 2,000 children spread out in shelters across the country. experts say it could take weeks or months to reunite them with their families. the process is pain staking.

this morning a group of migrants separated from their children under the trump administration's zero tolerance policy are waking up in an el paso shelter. a few, the shelter says, having their charges of illegal entry into the u.s. withdrawn as the federal court system adapts to the executive order. stopping family separation. >> we assume the majority of them have not been able to speak to their children at all since they were detained. >> reporter: migrants are now hoping for that reunion. this woman was separated from her son on his sixth birthday and thinks he might be in a shelter in arizona. 2,000 miles away in a rural poverty stricken village in honduras, maria wants to know when she'll see her grandson again. they're trapping children there as if they were little animals and they're human beings, she says. overnight defense secretary jim mattis indicating the u.s. military is preparing to build temporary camps at two military bases to house migrants.

but he did not say if they were for children, adultadults, or b. >> the details are being worked out between our staffs, exactly how much capacity they need at the two bases, what kind of other facilities they need. >> reporter: protests now erupting across the country including at this tent city for migrant children near el paso. >> don't detain these families. it's not right. it's immoral. >> reporter: the department of health and human services says it's still caring for more than 2,000 separates minors. how confusing is this process for them? >> it's completely confusing. they don't know the law. they don't speak the language. and they're being told conflicting things. >> reporter: as images of the children move the world, charlotte and dave wilner set up a facebook fund raiser asking for $1500, just enough to cover one bond that could get a single

migrant awaiting asylum released pending their hearing. so far they've raced more than $20 million. the average donation, around 40 bucks. >> these individual families matter. these individual children matter. and if we can make a difference for one of them, if we can make a difference for many of them, that's worth it. >> gabe, when these children are separated from their parents, are they at least able to talk to them? >> reporter: authorities say that the children are given the opportunity to speak with a vetted parent within 24 hours of being taken into custody. but sometimes it's a issue to be able to vet these parents because some immigration attorneys say that these kids are too young in order to provide any identifying information. so it's sometimes difficult to match them up with a parent. but some of the detained mothers we have spoken with say they have no idea where their child is, craig. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. also this morning, at least five arrests have been made in a

brutal mistaken identity murder of a 15-year-old boy here in new york. it happened outside of a deli in the bronx. it was all caught on camera. the video is quite graphic. this morning one man has been charged with murder and multiple suspects are in custody. in connection with a brutal killing of a teenager. he was allegedly killed in a case of mistaken identity. this video shows the horrifying attack last wednesday when police say five men purportedly members of a dominican gang entered a bronx deli and dragged the teenager into the street. the men repeatedly stabbed the young victim with knives and machetes. the teenager later died at a nearby hospital. the gang was reportedly trying to settle a score but targeted the wrong person. known to his young friends as junior. guzman feliz was part of the law enforcement explorers program.

he wanted to one day join the police force. now his family mourns holding a wake later today as anger grows. overnight an enormous crowd gathered lighting hundreds of candles chanting we want justice. guzman feliz's father and aunt devastated. >> we need help. sorry. we need justice. so he can fly high in peace. nobody deserved to die like this. i don't even know how to call those guys. they need to go to jail for life or more. >> online, an outpouring of support from celebrities. cardi b a bronx native donating $8,000 to the family saying on instagram these bronx streets are ruthless under the #justice for junior. rihanna also posting that she can't stop thinking about this

poor baby boy. yankees pitcher c.c. sabathia saying bluntly, the violence and hate needs to stop. a gofundme page justice for junior has raised more than $100,000 for the teenager's family so far. well above its $15,000 goal. meantime, tensions are still running high in pennsylvania where a community a demanding answers over the police shooting of an unarm ed individual. morgan has the late ost on the story. >> reporter: that funeral service will be held behind me at antoine rose's former middle school. stick this morning, questions swirling about what happened in the moments leading up to the teenager's death and who will be held responsible. mourners line the streets paying their final respects to 17-year-old antoine rose. the unarmed teenager gunned down by an east pittsburgh police officer.

>> his smile would light up your whole room. it didn't matter how much pressure he was under, he was just happy. >> reporter: some wearing shirts that read three shots to the back how do you justify that. marchers demanding justice for the high school senior honor student who once wrote a poem about violence in his community. >> i'm confused and afraid. >> reporter: protesters chanting one line that says i see mothers bury their sons. i want my mom to never feel that pain. this morning rose's funeral to be held as his former middle school. calls for justice growing after this cell phone video surfaced. it does not show what happened in the moments leading up to the altercation. police say they pulled over this silver chevy because it matched the description of a car involved in a drive-by shooting 13 minutes earlier. rose and another passenger jumped out of the car and ran. that's when police say east pittsburgh officer michael rossfeld opened fire killing the teenager.

ballistics damage was found on the car and now say rose had an empty 9 millimeter handgun clip in his pocket. >> two firearms were recovered from the suspect field. >> reporter: the officer who had been placed on leave had been on the job just three weeks before being sworn into the police departments less than two hours before the shooting. the video sparking nearly five days of protests. >> antoine rose was denied justice because he didn't get a chance to live his life. >> reporter: a life, they say, taken far too soon. the service begins at 11:00 a.m. just for students and family. meanwhile, the da has not decided whether charges will be filed against the officer involved and that officer has not given comment. >> all right. morgan radford, thank you. a rapidly growing wildfire has forced the evacuation of

folks in northern california. e radd erratic winds are fueling the fire northwest of sacramento. flames have scorched nearly 8,000 acres there. they've destroyed 12 houses, threatened 600 other buildings. it's one of several fires burning in california right now. parts of that state are on alert for high wildfire conditions. we have much many for to get to including prince william going to the middle east. we're joined by keir simmons with the latest from there. >> reporter: what a setting, right? this is a roman amphitheater. down there prince william hanging out with children. some of them war zone refugees. part of a program to help them reclaim their childhood. he may look relaxed, but this is a potentially controversial trip. this morning prince william kicking off his historic trip

now her story has exploded into a flood of controversy. that video of her neighbor calling the police now viewed more than a million times. >> cold water. $2 only. >> reporter: this morning, 8-year-old jordan rogers is an internet sensation for selling bottled water on the street in front of her house. >> thank you. >> thanks! >> this woman don't want to let a little girl sell some water. >> reporter: this woman is alis alison atle. this morning she's a social media villain for calling the cops on her young neighbor. >> yeah, and illegally selling water without a permit. >> reporter: we don't know what happened leading up to this video being shot. she is being called permit patty online. she says she was working at home upstairs, and jordan's sales pitch was loud and nonstop. >> i tried to be polite, but i was stern, and i said, please, i'm trying to work. you're screaming, you're yelling, and people have open windows. it's a hot day.

could use her white privilege, and it didn't work. >> reporter: eddel says she's now gotten thousands of hateful e-mails. >> all kinds of threats. horrible, horrible images and death threats. >> reporter: jordan says she was trying to raise money to help her mom, who recently lost her job, and go to disneyland. over the weekend, she got some good news. >> guess what. >> what? >> they know you wanted to go to disneyland, and they bought you four tickets to go. all right, we're going to switch gears now, get a check of the weather from al. >> hey, guys. thanks so much. well, let's get ready for some summertime temperatures. crank up mungo in the summertime. high pressure pumping up the humidity. feeling like 101 in memphis, 100 in houston, dallas 105, but to the north of the system, temperatures are on the cooler side. it will feel a little bit cooler in new york city at 82, 85 in d.c., 76 in detroit, 77 in cincinnati. but guess what, it's going to be a late-week scorcher. that heat and humidity is going to shoot out of texas, make its way up into the midwest. look at these temperatures going into the weekend. by friday, 93 in chicago, 92 in cincinnati, minneapolis will feel -- it will be 93 degrees by friday, kansas city 95. and guess what, it's coming east as well. saturday, sunday, on into monday, look at these temperatures. new york city up to 93 with a lot of humidity. 88 in boston, 94 in philly and 94 in washington, d.c.

i )m ... our breaking news : very good monday morning. it's 8:26. i'm laura garcia. breaking news. we continue to follow that wildfire burning out of control in lake county. the pony fire started along ponte road near clear lake oaks. the number of structures destroyed it all happened about 50 miles north of santa rosa. firefighters saying at least 22 structures destroyed. that is up from 12. firefighters not saying how many structures or homes, however. we do know that 600 structures are still threatened. 8,200 acres have burned, up from 7,700 last night. 3,000 people remain evacuated. want to check the morning

alzheimer's. >> it's personal to me. it's my life. it's our family. >> reporter: experts say there are steps that women can take to reduce their alzheimer's risk. first, if you're in perimenopause, talk to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy. >> if you start before menopause, estrogen replacement therapy, might also be protective against dementia. >> reporter: second, focus on what you eat. in her book "brain food," she recommends foods high in antioxidants, like chick peas, flaxse flaxseeds, apricots, berries and dark, leafy greens. to protect her brain, karen exercises daily and sticks to a low-sugar, plant-based diet. what advice do you have to women in their 40s who say, i don't have time. >> i have had the longest good-bye from my mom.

losing cognitive skills or concern around alzheimer's disease or dementia. that's certainly important for us to really focus on the needs of our members and our families. >> you're here because you have a huge announcement you're going to make today. what is that? >> we're excited that aarp is announcing that we're going to make a $60 million investment around alzheimer's research and prevention and cure. it's an exciting time for us because aarp has been involved in the education and advocacy aspect of dementia and other diseases. this is the first time we've made this investment. >> $60 million. that's a huge investment. >> it's a huge amount. it's a huge amount. and really, i call it an investment in hope for the future because, as we know today, there's no cure for alzheimer's and no prescription drugs that can help cure this.
