it's going to be clearing as we head through the 7:00 hour, just a few clouds and nice and sunny at 10:00. 67 degrees in the south bay and upper 70s at 2:00 today. as we head up to 82 in antioch, most of the bay area will enjoy a nice little cooldown. mike, you spotted something on the san mateo bridge. >> i was xaning the cameras westbound and i did see flashing lights and tow truck looked like they pulled over to the side. before i came to the studio before kari started talking, i saw them moving across the flat section. whatever was being addressed, it's clear from the shoulder. we're looking at the good drive across the bay. westbound is your commute direction like over here. on the peninsula reports of a little trash fire off woodside road. i'm going to track that and tracking it in the newsroom and it was an incident that got reported to chp but not a problem. we'll track that but sounds like maybe a trash can fire. an easy drive out of south

county, a little blip. there's debris reported on highway 17. might be a little small branch. i'll let you know if it's a problem but traffic flow is smooth and no delays and no problems. speeds for the east shore freeway and the approach. back to you. >> thanks, mike. now to a big story developing overnight. a federal judge is ordering the government to reunite migrant families separated at the border. the pivotal ruling comes hours before congress is proposed to vote today. >> tracie potts joins us live. do we know how congress will vote? >> reporter: hi, laura. well, what's next is the vote here in congress today but also the effort to reunite these families that started there in california with a federal judge out of san diego overnight saying that the government needs to get on this and get it done soon. overnight a federal judge ruled that migrant families must be

united over the next month. but in congress, today's immigration vote looked iffy, it ends family separation and provides $25 billion for a border wall with no assurance president trump will sign it. that's why some lawmakers say they are voting no. >> the backup plan. >> that doesn't succeed, then we'll cross that bridge. >> a vote only keeping on migrant families together. 17 states plus washington, d.c. are now suing the federal government to reunite nearly 2,000 parents with their children. >> mr. president, we will not support your creation of internment camps around our country. >> with his zero tolerance policy up in the air, the supreme court upheld president trump's travel ban. >> this is a great victory for our constitution. >> a 5-4 decision, the high court said it's okay to ban travel from seven countries, five of them mostly muslim. >> what they've said, as long as

woke up to see him standing in her doorway without clothes on. she screamed and he took off. new details this morning, an east bay teacher accused of molesting children he baby-sat is reportedly facing a new selt of criminal charges. authorities arrested 28-year-old brandon genst three weeks ago, a former teacher at the bentley school in lay fayette and moonlighted as a sitter. east bay times investigators identified two new victims making it four in all. they also believe there may be still more victims unite there. and keeping your kids safe on their way to school, san francisco schools are encouraging families to walk or take public transit to get to class. more than 100 schools are getting the push up from 30. the program includes safety presentations and physical changes like new signs and speed humps. the goal is to reduce traffic and cut crashes around schools. it is 5:04. an affordable housing project

specifically for teachers gets the go ahead in palo alto. the merc reported city council unanimously approved $3 million for the project. eventually it would add up to 120 rental housing units along grant avenue. supporters say it's just too expensive and teachers being forced to move further away from the students. critics say 120 units not nearly enough. >> a big change you'll see on the road soon this morning. vta says it's working to redesign -- redesign two busy south bay roads and follows a two-year study with the public outreach. the first is the drive and runs seven miles from sunnyvale to milpitas. this goes past levi stadium and ends near the b.a.r.t. station. traffic signals and pedestrian safety, same deal for the avenue running nearly six miles from 880 in san jose down through camp bell through 85. some people said they want the

bike lanes saying that right now it's scary to ride a bike along the road. they say it is refining design alternatives for both corridors. of course we'll get a look at those plans this fall. now to the game everyone will be talking about today. huge crowd expected in less than two hours when mexico takes on sweden in a world cup watch party. >> thom jensen has more at what's at stake and why this could be a historic game if mexico wins. this is a game a lot of people have been waiting to see. >> reporter: they certainly have, marcus. we're just seeing first fan and vendors arriving. this would be a huge victory for mexico if it can pull out a win defense a stout swedish defense. they have been successful in the round so far, very successful. mexico fans have fond recent memories here at avaya stadium.

they went nuts like they were watching a live game last saturday. now if the team wins today, it will have a spot in the round of 16. here's a couple of key game facts for mexico today. they will have to find a way to penetrate that stiff swedish defense. sweden skunked south korea 1-zip in first world cup win this year and this would also be a historic win, marcus, if mexico can pull it out. it will be the first time the team has three straight victories in the group round. >> south korea will play a role in mexico's world cup run. if it can beat or tie a tough german team that mexico already upset. mexico will move onto the round of 16 regardless of what happens in today's game against sweden. the game is in less than two hours. as i said, we're just seeing first fans and vend dors arriving and try to talk to some of them and have them for you in

to be a little bit more comfortable but still some 60s there in santa cruz and some low 70s. san jose up to 78 degrees. and 80 today in santa rosa. san francisco will be a cool and windy 62 degrees today. as we head over to mike, now you have a new cash? >> it's an area we often see crashes early in the morning. it's dimly lit and folks triy t beat the speed limit a little. you're going to slow a bit. not in the south bay or peninsula. we'll zoom into this area, as folks in brentwood, discovery bay head down towards 580. that crash may be blocking one lane possibly two lanes now traveling through the area. that will be your activity. from the freeways here towards highway 4 antioch, bay point, the reflt of contra costa county looks great. over towards that bay bridge, the east shore freeway, live look here shows a smooth flow. plenty of company but you're at the limit through berkeley.

mike traffic tease we are 30 minutes from sunrise now as we take a live look outside over san jose. going into santa clara for our temperatures we'll be at 58 and still a few clouds in the mix but it all clears out quickly. we're going to have a beautiful day. in fact, one of the more comfortable days of the week it's about to heat up just in time for the weekend. i'll have a look at that coming up in less than five minutes. so the sun is behind us as we look west. an easy drive towards the peninsula. headlights coming toward us, equally as smooth through hayward. good morning, the white house quickly backing off the threats to slow or even stop chinese investment in tech. though president trump has renewed his attacks on harly davidson. threatening the company with more taxes as it moves operations over seas.

it's moving operations overseas because of taxes and tariffs. the san francisco company task rabbit tells the business times it's been hacked and it's a bad one. tachk rabbit let's you hire people to do simple jobs. a guy goes shopping for dog food for a customer. bad guys got a hold of millions of customer records but worse they got the records for the workers which may include social security numbers and bank account numbers. task rabbit is owned by ikea. a new tweet in elon musk talking about a tesla pickup truck. he wants to know what sort of features people would like to see. musk says the new truck will have power outlets to run tools and crazy torque, his words. you may have noticed tesla comes up with a lot of ideas. the pickup truck joins the semi truck for new vehicles even as tesla is criticized for falling far behind in the production of

and e-mails and plenty of criticism online after being confused with the red hen in virginia. that is where sarah huckabee sanders was refused service last week. she caused quite a stir when she tweeted about the eatery. virginia red hen asked her to leave due to her ties with the trump administration. the owner of the bay area red hen says the last few days have been rather hectic. >> i was amazed by all of the negativity that people came up with, couldn't believe it. >> unfortunately there's been a noticeable dip in business since that tweet. but he's confident his business will bounce back as soon as this story fades away. in the meantime, we learned sarah huckabee sanders will receive secret service protection starting today. this stems from that restaurant rejection. the dmv is apologizing this morning for those long lines. we all have been here. the department says people try to get the new real i.d. have waited as much as 4.5 hours.

in the south bay. los gatos will top out at 80 degrees, 81 in morgan hill, east bay up to 79 and 82 in danville. oakland reaching 67 degrees and 60 in half moon bay. san mateo 68 degrees and mostly some lower 60s in san francisco, still going to be cool and windy today in the north bay looking at 80 degrees in santa rosa and 73 in mill valley. heading out boating today or making plans, head's up, there's a small craft advisory that will be in effect. that means that small boats, inexperienced boaters should not be out there today. the winds and swells will be increasing as the day goes along. as you make weekend plans, let me know what's going on or where you're heading. i'm @ kari hall weather. you may get a personalized forecast and have someone reach out and say what's the weather going to be like in salt lake city, utah, wherever you're heading. we're looking at dangerous heat for the inland areas with highs

reaching the upper 90s but it will be cooling down that spike in temperatures will be fairly brief and nice in san francisco. mike, you're taking a peek at san jose. >> we'll look at san jose, you can tweet us and ask what may be going on over in an area if you see any flashing lights, always good to know and share information. right now folks are sharing the roadway as the sun peeks out over san jose, northbound 101. i'll adjust that and make it less blurred out by lights coming out now. a smooth drive through that area and all along the peninsula and east bay and tri-valley. this is great as we move the map up, looking at contra costa county, we have the crash southbound. no update from chp, a new crash 680, i'll check that as well. updates on both of the crashes but we don't see slowing as a result of either. a little slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza and should have metering lights turning on right now. 45 train is on time.

put the car in drive this welcome back, it's 5:25. new research you'll want to hear before you put your car in drive this morning. it studies how distracting technology made by local companies including apple and google can really be. researchers asked drivers to perform tasks using built in infotakenment systems, when they compared it to cell phone systems, they say both are less distracting to drivers but still not safe. >> what we found is that both car play and android auto outperformed the system you would get with the car when you purchased it. all of the in vehicle systems available to congress assusumer more demanding than what triple a would recommend.

researchers say if you take your eyes off the road for more than two seconds, you double your risk of a crash. also new this morning, a warning for parents if you're taking your kids to the playground this summer. >> apparently one of the most common injuries to kids under the age of 6, a broken leg. they say it happens when they go down the slide on their parents' lap. here's nbc's medical correspondent. >> it's a lot more common than most people think from 2002 to 2015, 250,000 got hurt and specifically got these leg injuries. >> this morning on the "today" show, see one mother's warning about this very issue. her post is actually going viral. >> think it's a safe place. >> coming up next on "today in the bay," a dramatic end to a high speed chase through the stanford campus overnight. >> we have really no idea what's going on. >> high drama before a flight.

before ending on alexis drive up in the hills in palo alto. show you the video. this is where the scene ended. you can see the suspect in there in handcuffs, she's weeping there. you can see as police -- i think that's fire taking her to an ambulance for treatment. according to palo alto police, they tell a.camera crews she failed to yield where standing. way up in the hills on alexis drive. she had a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon but no word on the jurisdiction. it looks like there was an uber sticker on her car. we're working to get more info on that and bring to viewers when we do. we're live here in palo alto, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> glad no one was seriously hurt in the crash, pete. >> new this morning, frightening moments on an los angeles bound flight during a hijack scare.

all new this morning, we're hearing from passengers for first time. it happened last night in new york's jfk airport. there was some concern a hijacker attacked the jetblue flight. turned out not to be true but heavily armed law enforcement officers boarded the plane. overnight someone on board praised the crew for keeping them informed but others say they were terrified. >> put your hands up, we all put our hands up and they walked up and down the aisle and made sure everybody was okay. >> people thought there was a threat on board, an actual person on board and stuff, walking around and like -- you guys walk past me with pistols, look ahead and there are two guys with rifles on their shoulders and it gets pretty scary. >> here's what happened, air traffic controllers were not able to get in touch with the pilot and it turns out there was a radio communications issue. and there was a false hijacking alarm sent out. >> 5:33. a live look at concord city hall this morning where there will be

a special meeting a lot of people are talking about. the concord city council will discuss the trump administration's plans to house thousands of migrants. dozens packed city hall demanding council to take action. >> please let's do more. you can pass resolutions and you can speak out but we must be taking action. >> we're out here really making their voices heard and who wants to see a country that so many of us dream that could be that has now turned into a nightmare. >> a concord city council tells us they heard nothing from the navy. >> firefighters in lake county making head way knocking down the pawnee wildfire but evacuees have no idea when they'll get to return back to their homes. here are the latest numbers, that fire is now 17% contained and at least 13,000 acres have burned. 22 structures are destroyed and we still don't know how many are

homes. 2700 firefighters now attacking that fire, some coming from as far away as oregon. we spoke with one woman who says they worked very hard to save her home. >> athey risked their lives, i have a lot of admiration for them, i do and their families, bless her heart. >> frtds say for now the fire is burning in more remote areas but crews worry about the triple digit temperatures returning this weekend. our coverage on the pawnee fire continues online. head to nbcbayarea.com. you can check out our live interactive maps. 5:35 right now. new, a bizarre incident in the east bay. i want you to look here how this all ended. that car slamming into a residential care facility. authorities say that driver actually lives there and did this on purpose. it happened last night in san leandro and investigators say that driver slammed his car into that home shortly after deputies

tried to pull the car over. the car struck one of the eight people inside and they were not hurt. the driver did not suffer serious injuries and he's now under psychiatric evaluation. and happening today, a plea hearing for two men who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman waiting for a ride share. three weeks ago police arrested lopez flores and novato and christi christian con terra. the pair forced a woman into their car and assaulted her as they drove her to sonoma. investigators say that victim escape in a safeway parking lot. happening today, marriott hotel workers across the country and here in the bay area plan to protest. they are asking for better pay and protections from sexual harassment. local protest is happening at 4:00 the city center downtown. we're looking more than 1300 marin county workers plan to strike starting sunday. they are asking for better pay as well. the strike is expected to last

there for three days. county officials say the strike will not impact the county fair or emergency services. >> another discussion on plans to make one of the bay area's curviest roads safer for people and animals. a stretch of highway 17 in santa cruz county they call laurl laurel curve. and many consider this a road kill hot spot. they've been following the story since 2012 and caltrans is planning to build a wildlife crossing underpass by the year 2021. >> trying to cross and being hit and chp having to head unite there. very curvy section south of summit there. no problems this morning. we'll follow those developments. the slowing shows farther south on 101. starting to build towards morgan hill right on schedule. we zoom out and i want to make sure we talk about this crash west 24. it looks like it's closer to broadway in off ramp there where folks are jamming up and crash

on either side of the freeway. maybe the fast lane blocked as well. one vehicle is overturned and whi quite a spectacle. the rest of the bay moves nicely towards the bay bridge and there's the north bay where that sun is really coming up. really bright. >> going to warm things up by this weekend. >> as we head into the weekend, a look at what we can expect. >> how did you guys like the heat last weekend? >> did not. >> exactly. >> that would be a good bet again this weekend coming up too. it's going to really be hot. we're talking about dangerous heat and also a high wildfire threat as we go into saturday. that will be of concern as our highs reach in the upper 90s, even triple digitses in a few spots. the bay will be ats 86 degrees for the high on saturday and coast at 78 degrees. really nice. sunday 72 degrees for the coast, the bay at 82 and it will be

slightly lower on sunday but still pretty uncomfortable. if you're going to the soy and tofu festival in japantown in san francisco, it's going to be very nice. you can enjoy that cooler weather. now if you're going up to lake shas at shas ta, it's going to be rough. 92 on saturday. and on sundays 101 degrees. it's also going to be warm in l.a. with 70s but some of those inland areas are also going to be reaching into the triple digits. in santa cruz this weekend, one great place to go cool off. 72 on friday. a few clouds, we'll also see partly cloudy skies throughout the weekend especially during the morning but highs reaching the upper 60s and natural air conditioning all around. we're going to see those temperatures still nice and cool today and i'll have a look at that temperature trend coming up in three minutes. >> thanks so much, kari.

will decide whether to -- based on number of employees they have. they decided to put the measure on the november ballot. critics say it's attacks on jobs, the mayors say it would raise $6 million all to be spent on transportation and affordable housing. two issues, mountain view and the bay area continue to struggle with. >> the board of supervisors has a new leader. malia cohen was unanimously voted as the new board president yesterday. supervisor cohen has been on board since 2011. the term lasts until january and she takes over from london breed just elected mayor. a bill election win here. scott mcgrew joins us now. even she didn't think she would win. >> the young woman is 28-year-old alexandria cortez, she won her primary in new york, beating out a ten term congressman in the primary last night. this caught us so badly off guard, we don't have video of

they give a full confirmation. it could be another 90 minutes of closure and perhaps more depending on the investigation. we'll track that west 24 does jam up by comparison the rest of the contra costa county and east bay approach towards the maze moves slowly but there's not a great alternate for west 24. you can hit some of the surface streets but don't kick in towards the congestion and that's the problem getting towards the bay bridge. the upper east shore freeway if that happens to be off highway 4. that's much clearer. we'll continue to track that and the bay bridge toll plaza which may benefit lighter traffic because of the traffic held up over in the orinda oakland drive for high with a 24. we'll continue to follow that. low clouds in the area. you obviously have changes in store. >> you can also see that as you take a live look outside in san francisco. those low clouds and mist and drizzle as we get started on this wednesday morning. as you get ready to head out in san jose, we're reaching towards 78 degrees for
