they give a full confirmation. it could be another 90 minutes of closure and perhaps more depending on the investigation. we'll track that west 24 does jam up by comparison the rest of the contra costa county and east bay approach towards the maze moves slowly but there's not a great alternate for west 24. you can hit some of the surface streets but don't kick in towards the congestion and that's the problem getting towards the bay bridge. the upper east shore freeway if that happens to be off highway 4. that's much clearer. we'll continue to track that and the bay bridge toll plaza which may benefit lighter traffic because of the traffic held up over in the orinda oakland drive for high with a 24. we'll continue to follow that. low clouds in the area. you obviously have changes in store. >> you can also see that as you take a live look outside in san francisco. those low clouds and mist and drizzle as we get started on this wednesday morning. as you get ready to head out in san jose, we're reaching towards 78 degrees for an afternoon

the suspect exposed himself inside a woman's home. investigators say 2:00 a.m. last thursday, the man entered a home on andromeda circle through a back sliding door. a young woman woke up to find him standing at the doorway without clothes on. she screamed and he took off. >> new this morning now, disturbing story. an east bay teacher accused of molesting children he babysat is facing a new set of criminal charges. they arrested 28-year-old three weeks ago. he's a former teacher at bentley school in lafayette who moonlighted as a sitter. the east bay times reports investigators have identified two new victims bringing that total to four. they also believe there are more victims. >> new this morning, an affordable housing project specifically for teach ares gets the go ahead in palo alto. the merc reported city council unanimously approved $3 million for the project and eventually it would add up to 120 rental

housing units along grant avenue. supporters say it's just too expensive and teachers are being forced to move further away from students. critics say 120 units are not nearly enough. a big change on the road soon, vta says it's working on redesigns for two busy south bay roads. this follows two years of public outreach. the first tasmin drive runs to milpitas and goes past levi stadium and ends near the new b.a.r.t. station. vta looked at travel times and traffic signals and pedestrian safety. the same deal for barveg basskem avenue in san jose down through campbell to 85. some people said that they want bike lanes saying that right now it's really scary to ride the bike along that road. vta says it's refining design alternatives for both corridors. we'll get a look at the plans this fall. it is 6:05.

evergreen and east san jose, going to be 75 degrees at noon and reaching in the upper 70s today, even a little cooler than normal. we should be at about 81 degrees. if you've got a drive through fremont, starts out cool with upper 50s this morning. that commute is looking pretty good. and clear visibility, a lot of sunshine. do not forget the sunglasses before you head out. also a good day to heads to the alameda county fair in pleasanton. a very comfortable one with highs in the upper 70s and breezy winds through the afternoon. we'll talk about what's going on in palo alto coming up. mike, you have a total of three crashes? >> three multilane crashes over here, multivehicle crashes. first starting with palo alto, may have done a quick traffic break. past university it's consolidated up here towards willow. right there peek under the underpass, you see the flashing lights. two lanes are blocked here at willow and you get distracted by

the destruction, some folks will be bailing off the area into university which is already jammed past amazon and ikea. careful over towards facebook and dumbarton bridge. 280 in the same area, clear as you would expect this time of morning. the other crash across the bay, southbound 880 at a street was blocking your two right lanes but i do believe they may be clearing right now. speed sernss are starting to look a little better. the most significant crash is over here continuing for west 24 and out of orinda and caldecott tunnel. this crash does involve a vehicle flipped over. someone was flown from a car and chp says the coroner has been called. deadly crash is usually what that's indicated. generally speaking we have at least 90 minutes from that point. we're looking at 7:30, 8:00 when they can have things cleared here. we're going to track that.

morning. it is studying how distracting technology made by local companies can really be. researchers asked drivers to perform tasks using built-in in infot axt nment systems, when they compared it two systems, they say both were less distracting to drivers but still not safe. >> what we found was both car play and android auto outperformed the system you would get with the car when you purchased it. all of the in vehicle infotainment systems are more dmaning than what triple a would recommend. >> if you take eyes off the road for more than two seconds, you can double your risk of a crash. don't get distracked. easy to see. >> we have a couple of big crashes. in fact we can do that right now. >> sorry for jumping in there.

>> it's a big one. >> oakland we're told it is a deadly crash west 24. the chopper over the scene and you've seen flares going off here blocking three lanes. an on ramp and off ramp and i see the top one there that the little van or suv is getting off the freeway. i believe that is a broadway exit. the rest of the traffic goes to just one lane passing the chp cruiser and other law enforcement vehicles funneling down as folks are coming out of the cal da cot tunnel. this is a deadly crash. one vehicle reported overturned in the chp report and someone possibly being thrown from the car and vehicle and that's why there's a big concern. this investigation will continue. we'll follow this in the newsroom. as we get out to the map, the backup you just saw, jammed out of orinda towards the broadway exit, it did look like folks were getting off the freeway at

broadway and this jam will be a big problem because there are not good alternates through that area. as we zoom out, the rest of contra costa moves smoothly in vallejo. south 880 maintains a smooth drive. the crash should be on the shoulder. north 101 as we get past university, we had a quick traffic break jammed up approaching embarcadero. the crash is still affecting lanes and that's where you're slowing the left side of the screen as you head towards the area. there will be slowing between university and willow for the time being as well. little gloomy out there right now. >> we're seeing clouds rolling by. especially the coast, the tri-valley right now, you're starting out at 55 degrees, beautiful sunrise, south bay now stepping out the door at 56 degrees. it's 54 in san francisco. and 51 with patchy fog in the north bay. if you're on the way to diridon station in san jose, your

transit forecast looking good. light jacket for the start of the morning with upper 50s but later on today, you'll be comfortable with light long sleeves. it's going to be nice and sunny, sunglasses too if you're able to enjoy the day off, maybe going out to the hiking trails, alam rock park looking good as clouds clear out around 7:00. it will be nice and sunny and temperatures today reaching the upper 70s. it will be much more comfortable. turning windy this afternoon. a pretty brisk onshore flow will keep it cooler in san francisco with a high of 62 degrees. 80 in santa rosa and palo alto 76 degrees and morgan hill reaching 81. it's also a day for boating but it's going to be rough out there. choppy seas. inexperienced boaters should not be out there. it's going to be wavy with a small craft advisory in effect. now let me know what's happening this weekend as you make plans.

marriott hotel workers plan to protest. they are asking for better pay and protections from sexual harassment, the local protest is happening at 4:00 at the oakland mare yoet city center downtown. we're also learning more than 1300 marin county workers plan to strike starting on sunday. they are asking for better pay as well. that strike is expected to last three days. county officials say the strike will not impact the county fair or emergency services. >> new for you this morning. the perfect time to pass along the warning to parents. >> one of the most common injury to kids under age of 4 is a broken leg. it happens when they go down the slide on their parents' lap. here's nbc's medical correspondent. >> it's a lot more common than most people think from 2002 to 2015, over 350,0005-year-olds and below got hurt on the playground and specifically got the leg injuries. >> this morning on the "today" show, see one mo mother's warning about the very issue. her post is going viral.

i )m laura garcia. a very good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us for "today in the bay," i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington, we want to check in with mike inouye tracking a deadly accident in east bay. >> we have a very tough scene, sky ranger is over the scene at westbound 24. down to one lane in the off ramp at broadway. westbound is the commute direction. as i step into the scene we have caltrans vehicles and chp and we have other emergency tows there. this vehicle on its roof, another one there and couple of others have actually been cleared from the scene. we have an investigation of this deadly crash which will remain. the coroner's van, i don't see it. it has to arrive for an investigation there. as we look back at the maps, we're looking at the big backup for west 24 out of the caldecott tunnel. there's not a great alternate for folks through the area. grisly peak fish ranch, tunnel road, they are start to get more crowded and folks trying to get

around clermont hills. that will be an issue for folks in oakland and orinda. that is a big problem. for rest of the bay, and rest of contra costa county no problems. and in towards the maze. rest of the bay's commute showing a lighter volume that will help but again, west 24 only one lane is open at broadway. we'll track that for the deadly crash. we see low clouds and cooler temperatures right now. >> we're looking forward to the cooler weather today and the clouds will help keep it cool for the coast. as we look outside in san jose, we're seeing a few of those rolling by but overall we're getting sunshine. if you're heading out to play soccer enjoying the day in the south bay, our temperatures reach in the mid-70s by noon and mostly sunny skies as we head up into the upper 70s for much of the inland areas. we will talk about a major warm-up for our valleys this weekend. that's coming up in the full

microclimate forecast. >> thank you. 6:32. all new this morning, a suspect is in custody after a high speed chase on the stanford campus and through the hills of palo alto. pete suratos live near the campus to explain why this started and how it all ended, pete. >> this started with a warrant stop right where we're standing on el camino real and stanford avenue overnight and leads to a chase about two miles west from where we're standing at the stanford university campus before ending in the palo alto hills. and we're going to show you video. this is where that suspect was arrested, taken into custody. looks like she's going to get treatment there from an ambulance. she's being held by palo alto fire. she failed to yield in the area and that led through the chase in the stanford hills on alexis drive. she did have a warrant out for an assault with a deadly weapon but no word on the jurisdiction. i want to point out on the car, there was an uber sticker, still

working to confirm if she was an uber driver. we'll bring that to viewers, pete suratos for quts it's in the bay. >> people could really get hurt. glad no one was seriously hurt in that situation. >> there is some frightening moments on a los angeles bound flight during a hijacking scare. all new this morning, hearing from passengers for the first time. it happened last night at new york's jfk airport. there was concern that a hijacker attacked a jetblue flight. turned out not to be true but heavily armed low enforcement officers boarded the plane. overnight some on board praised the crew for keeping them informed but others say they were terrified. >> when they got on, put your hands up -- all put our hands up and walked up and down the aisle to make sure everybody was okay. >> people thought there was a threat on board, an actual person on board and walking around, you guy walk past me with pistols and look ahead two

guys standing in front with rifles on their shoulders. it gets pretty scary. >> here's what happened, air traffic controllers were not able to get in touch with the pilot. and it turns out there was a radio communication issue and there was a false hijacking alarm sent out. >> happening today, a live look at concord city hall where there will be a special meeting. we want you to hear about. city council will discuss the trump administration plans to house thousands of detained migrants at the air station. dozens packed city hall demanding the council take action. >> please, let's do more. you can pass resolutions and speak out. we must be taking action. >> right here, really making their voices heard and who wants to see a country that so many of us dream that could be that has now turned into a nightmare. >> the concord city council tells us they've heard nothing from the navy on housing

detainees at the naval station. >> developing right now, firefighters making head way in knocking down the pawnee wildfire. ee vak cue eyes have no idea when they will be able to return to their homes. here are the latest numbers, the fire now 17% contained and 13,000 acres have burned. we know the 22 striuctures are destroyed. we still don't know how many of homes. 2700 frtds are now attacking the fire. some as far away as oregon. we spoke with one woman who says they worked hard to save her home. >> they risked their lives and they are awesome. i have a lot of admiration for them. i do and their families, bless their heart. >> the firefighters say for now the fire is burning in more remote areas but crews really worry about the triple digit temperatures returning this weekend. in our coverage of the pawnee fire continues online. go to our website. you can check out our live interactive map. >> it's 6:36.

new this morning ks a bizarre incident in the east bay as you can see. it ended with a car slamming into a residential care facility. authorities say the driver actually lives there and did it on purpose. it happened last night in san lorenzo. investigators say the driver slammed his car into the home shortly after deputies tried to pull the car over. the car struck one of the eight people inside. luckily they weren't hurt and the driver did not suffer serious injuries either. but he's now under psychiatric evaluation. >> all right, folks we're taking over this shot here with sky ranger, over highway 24. this is a scene of the deadly crash. we do have a tow truck hooking up one of the remaining vehicles and the other is right here. it's an overturned suv. we do have two lanes blocked but now they just opened one more, they being chp. caltrans is also there to assist. we're waiting for the coroner to arrive to do the final report but chp calls them only in the situation where there's a deadly crash. look at the big backup for west

francisco for the soy and tofu festival. look at the high temperatures on saturday. 78 degrees while the bay will be at 86 and dangerous heat for the inland valleys. we'll have to watch out for high wildfire danger for the inland area hills. down a few degrees. it's still going to be hot reaching 90 degrees. 82 for the bay and a comfortable coast at 72 degrees. this is what i was talking about in japantown and san francisco on saturday. great weather for that highs in the low 70s and sunshine. just perfect but look at how hot it's going to be in lake shas at a this weekend. 91 degrees on friday. 98 degrees on saturday and 101 degrees on sunday. you'll want to go swimming. looking at los angeles where the highs will be mostly in the low 70s but inland empire will be also heating up in the upper 90s and as we look at santa cruz, we're going to have some beautiful weather for our beaches and santa cruz will be nice with some mid to upper 60s

police release this sketch hoping it leads to the arrest. it happened about 2:00 in the morning last thursday. the marn entered the home through the back sliding door. a young woman who lives there woke up, found the man standing in her doorway without clothes on. she screamed and he took off. >> police are looking for more potential victims after an east bay teacher was accused of molesting children he baby-sat. officers arrested 21-year-old brandon ganette three weeks ago and he could face a new set of criminal charges. according to the east bay times, investigators identified two new victims making it four in all. they believe there could be more victims. he used to work at the bentley school in lafayette and also baby-sat on the side. a follow-up on the recent scandal involving the cleanup of toxic soil at hunter's point naval ship yard. according to the examiner, it will not stop the ongoing redevelopment efforts. city leaders fast tracked the

big change on the roads. vta is working on redesigning two busy south bay roads. it follows off two years of studies and a lot of public outreach. it runs seven miles from sunnyvale to milpitas and ends near the new part station. they looked at travel time and pedestrian safety. the same deal for baskem avenue running six miles from 880 in san jose down through campbell to 85. some people say they want bike lanes. saying right now it's scary to ride along that road. vta says it's refining design alternatives with both corridors we'll take a look at the plans this fall. looking live near stanford, police say a woman led them on a chase overnight. police tried to pull her over at el camino and stanford drive near the campus. eventually officers surrounded her in the hills off alexis drive. this is past the palo alto hills
