that was a huge upset last night there was something about this young woman's political ad that did capture a lot of people's attention. just watch a little bit of it and explain why you think she won. >> this race is about people versus money. we've got people. they've got money. it's time we acknowledge in a not all democrats are the same that a democrat who takes corporate money, profits off foreclosure, doesn't live here, doesn't send his kids to our schools, doesn't drink our water or breathe our air cannot possibly represent us. >> powerful ad what did you see there? >> sure is. politics used to be defined by this vertical line that ran down the middle of the field. we debate between the 45 yard lines, just like the message that elected donald trump, and the message that bernie sanders ran on, what she's saying is there's a group of people above the line. one set of rules for them and a

different set of rules for everybody else. that message runs and is effective from the left of the democratic party all the way across to the trump voter. >> this is what's interesting about why you would have sanders/trump voters during the last election. >> absolutely. >> if all the energy in the democrat party is on the far left and certainly the energy in the republican party is with trump and the far right, how does that play out? if were you going to do a general election, is that good for trump? >> well i think it's bad for the country. it could be good for trump. because trump got elected, if you looked at the polling, essentially what the american people were telling us, we didn't listen very well. was that there were two unelectable candidates. when two unelectable candidates run against each other. one of them is going to win. and by 78,000 votes, in three states, that's what happened to donald trump. i think politically, donald trump has advantaged the degree to which american politics is radicalized. if the center collapses, i think that benefits donald trump.

>> his numbers by the way are going up. as you know, you are a former republican, you recently kind of stepped away from the party. if you were to answer the question could, will donald trump be elected again, if you were asked that question right now what would your answer be? >> maybe. look at the end of the day, politics at the beginning of my political career was a business of persuasion, it is become a business of incitement. you have on both sides inciters, people trying to increase intensity by raising fefrer. by making the other side the absolute enemy. all virtue is found in our party. all evil in the other. all good ideas here. all bad ideas there. as we have a politics of incitement, what it does is it turns off people in the middle. so we're at an interesting moment in american politics. but that governing center, that created so much prosperity, so much good in the country, is getting smaller, it's collapsing. >> steve schmidt.

always interesting to get your perspective. thank you so much for being here. we appreciate it. also this morning, investigators are working to determine the cause of a powerful and deadly explosion at a hospital in central texas. the blast leading to evacuations and widespread power outages there. nbc's kristen dahlgren is at the scene this morning. kristen, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. witnesses say the explosion here was so strong it rocked this small town. none of the hospital workers or patients were injured, but one construction worker did lose his life. others remain in critical condition this morning. >> we only know something blew up. >> smoke billowing into the sky after an explosion rocked the central texas hospital. killing a construction worker tuesday and injuring a dozen more. several of them with severe burns. >> we have a report of some kind of an explosion behind coryell memorial hospital. >> it happened at a construction site at coryell memorial hospital in gatesville. the building partially flattened.

known as junior to family and friends, was brutally murdered by a group of young men wielding knives and machetes. security video shows the boy being dragged out of a local deli and into the street. bystanders do nothing as he's repeatedly stabbed. after the attack, this new video shows the victim walking back into the store, bleeding from his wounds. the clerk stays behind the counter and guzman feliz leaves, running to a nearby hospital where he later died. the suspects are between 18 and 24 years old. reportedly affiliated with a new york-based dominican gang. the group was reportedly trying to settle a score, but targeted the wrong person. the violent organization also allegedly involved in another incident last week. a 14-year-old was stabbed and beaten by the side of the road. the boy is now in critical

identified. but the sheriff's office says detectives are reviewing prior shooting incidents in the area, as part of the investigation. this, as we learn more about the victim, a scientist and loving father. five days after the senseless murder of tristan beaudet, a father that was camping with his two young daughters, questions about what could have been done to prevent it. >> i would have hoped there was a little more, at least security of the campsite, where you have people sleeping there, unknowing there are dangers in the hills, just right outside. >> reporter: james rogers says he was camping in malibu creek state park in 2016 when he was struck through the middle of the night. >> i fell through my hammock and i woke top find the wound on my arm. >> reporter: multiple wounds from shotgun pellets required surgery. he told police. >> i showed them the area and

told them what happened. that was pretty much it, until i found out there was another incident. >> reporter: rogers says he know s of two more shootings that happened shortly after his, including the bullet that pierced this woman's vehicle in the middle of the night just two months later. police say they're investigating three other shooting incidents that happened within the last year. but so far aren't saying there's a connection. >> there's no evidence that suggests that this incident is related to any other prior shooting near the location. >> reporter: his rabbi says his irvine community is reeling after their devastating loss. >> this is a family that loves each other deeply. and for him to take his family on a camping trip was a natural thing. >> reporter: he says his wife and daughters are surrounded by family and are doing as well as
