francisco good thursday morning to you. friday eve for a lot of people. taking a live look out in san francisco as we get started with a cool morning here. thank you so much for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at the traffic in a moment. kari, the cool start to the day. going to heat up, for sure. >> for some parts of the bay area but not too bad today. and we are taking a live look outside in san jose with a clear start once again this morning. let's go to east san jose and evergreen will be in the mid-50s through much of the morning and then we'll see the temperatures quickly warming up. by noon, 70 degrees. we are heading into the low 80s today, some mid-80s inland. overall, pleasantly warm day.

we'll talk about a big heat-up coming up in the forecast. a crash and slowing. >> both over in the altima. looking just fine. where we see slowing with the road crewsnd the build. folks coming off 205. there's there's a crash around grant line road maybe quick traffic break but may have been over the last couple of seconds and seeing slower drive to livermore. in livermore, looking at the dublin drive. as you're coming westbound of livermore past a steady flow into the rest of the east bay. we'll track as road crews clear and seeing slowing. >> thank you, mike. 4:31 for you right now. a developing story out of san francisco. the search for a driver that crashed into a pair of pedicabs

injuring a family. the driver of one of the pedicabs is at san francisco general with life threatening injuries. today in the bay has the latt on the investigation of what happened. >> reporter: several pedicab riders are here at san francisco general hospital supporting their fellow rider kevin manning in critical condition. according to a description on the website, he is an inventer driving to finance a small business. >> very shaken up. this is my close friend. i hang out with outside of work. he is a good friend. >> reporter: according to san francisco police, the driver of a sedan smashed into the ped cap and a second one atembarkdera. an owner of the ped cap company said the vehicles are staples of san franciscowaterfront. have you had anything like this happen? >> no. ped caps operating in san francisco almost 25 years.

there's not been an accident of this nature and hopefully there will never be again. >> reporter: police have not released much information on the four passengers, a family with two children. the mother has serious injuries. the driver of the second pedicab was not hurt. >> everyone's a little shaken up. it could happen to anyone at any time so obviously our community is very tight and worried about kevin. >> reporter: today in the bay. >> now to the continuing coverage of the pawney fire. there's hopeful news. nearly 1,000 people allowed to return home. the quickly grew prompting mandatory evacuations in spring valley. the community of about 840 people. four homes in a row burned to the ground in a block. those who lived there were able to return for the first time yesterday. >> i wanted to look, paw through

some of the stuff. see if there was anything. there's not. >> hearts go out to them. that fire has destroyed a dozen homes and burned more than 13,000 acres. officials say about 300 people are still evacuated. a follow up now. we now know when a burned library will reopen in the east bay. this is video of the library destroyed in february. authorities say that it was arson but so far no lrary offic tell the east bay times they're planning to open next spring. electrical systems, ceilings and walls all still need to be replaced. be -- will not be housed at a former concordaval weapons station. yesterday, the department of homeland security said that it will not set up any camps in

concord at this time. there were reports that the agency planned to hold nearly 50,000 detainees there. it was a big sig h of relief. demonstrators showed up to protest. happening today, you can actually have your chance do see former president bill clinton. he's coming to san jose and he will be at the sap center talking about his new book "the president is missing." fictional thriller co-authored of james patterson and kicks off at 8:00. another former president is also making a trip to the bay area. president barack obama appears tomorrow in atherton. this is held at a private home. last month, mr. obama was in san francisco meeting with the ceo of airbnb. happening today, up dating your commute, b.a.r.t.

unemployment and first quarter gdp. the dow which was up about 250 points closes down 165. the nasdaq falling 116 points to 7445. walmart is rolling out a virtual shopping tour on walmart.com to let customers browse and buy items for the home. it's an apartment with 70 items of national brands and walmart's private label. buy the room option to let shoppers add entire collections with themes of boho or decked out college dorm into carts. chipotle's ceo is borrowing from the play book of taco bell to revive the chain and making changes to the menu andoost digital sales with shelves to pick up mobile orders. chipotle with more sack foods and a happy hour promotion between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. with $2 tacos and the beer and margaritas at most of the restaurants, marcus.

weeks and reminding folks that west portal and forest hill closed. rerouted for buses around the tunnel and means delays for the service through the area and you know about that because you have seen the signs. back to you. >> thank you, mike. right now, to a county we first brought you yesterday. there's an arrest in the death of 10-year-oldabalos found dead shortly after he came out lashistmother's boyfriend i charged with his murder. investigators say that the mother called 911 last week saying her son had fallen but investigators say he likely died from abuse. the boy's relatives say they have been reporting the abuse to l.a. county department of children and family services since 2015. but no action was taken. some sad news to tell you about. an elderly woman robbed and

assaulted is dead. 93-year-old annie marie peterson hospitalized after a broken hip. this is when her purse was snatched. she was knocked down to the ground. this happened at a bank of america in sunny valley mall last month. theuspe otto eventually turned himself in. police tell us that they can't say peterson died as a direct result of the injuries of the robbery. our own jody hernandez broke the story online. follow us. @nbc bay area. now to a major milestone on the peninsula. the city of east palo alto is celebrating two years without any homicides. back in 1992, you may remember it had the highest homicide rate in the nation. police chief albert cardini's message to the community, you should be proud of the work you have done. well, they want google to go before it even gets here.

more than two dozen people attended a meeting last night to express concern about the tech giant's expansion plans in san jose. google wants to create what it's called a planned village near san jose deerdon train station. some say it takes space for housing and cost jobs. 4:50. the rush is on in sacramento stop soda taxes from taking hike and holding on here in california for a decade. let me explain it to you. there's a reason why lawmakers are really taking this action. lawmakers say it's really to stop big soda companies from taking the issue to voters in november. new pressure would require a two thirds majority to create a new drink law. the lawmakers can come up with a bill to delay the taxes and hope they pull their measure. and all of that has to happen

a rebate runaround on 4:54 right now. nbc bay area responds to a north bay man who got stuck with a rebate run around on new appliances. the team helped get the reward. chris chmura explains. >> larry miller said he saw an offer he couldn't refuse. buy four appliances and get a 10% rebate.

in his case, almost 400 bucks. he said he filled out the paperwork and sent it to samsung and waited for the rebate. and it never arrived. at first, larry said samsung told him it didn't receive the paperwork so he sent it again. then samsung denied the rebate appliances from an ineligible retailer. larry said there's nothing about that in the rebate's fine print solar ri turned to us for help. we contacted samsung and a few weeks later larry got the $380 rebate card. samsung told us it regrets the hassle and will review the experience in an effort to constantly improve its processes. rebates can be tricky. keep a running record of dates. also, keep copies. i mean this, of everything. especially the rebate form itself. you might need to reference the fine print just like larry did. call us any time.
