i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. kari is here to talk about the forecast today and a cool start for the morning. >> nice and cool this morning. mostly clear skies. not seeing all the fog we had yesterday. as we take a live look outside in san jose, clear start. we are about 49 minutes away from sun rise right now and as we get a look at the temperature trend for south san jose, santa teresa, 58 degrees at 7:00 and low 70s early afternoon. enjoy today. it heats up tomorrow. mike, you have a new crash on the peninsula? >> new crash and i just got word cleared from the area of burlingame toward broadway. here's 101 south. you see a lighter flow of traffic and 101 wasn't really impacted by the minor impact over there in burlingame. that's right around here for the earlier crash. the camera right there where i just showed you. throughout, green sensors around the bay. looking at contra costa county, a smooth drive except for right

here. may have a new incident. right awe off of 680. back to you. >> thank you very much. happening today, firing gunshots into the air to make it safer, it sounds like a contradiction. >> that's what's happening in contra costa county today, all a test, unique one from chp. pete suratos joining us live with what you shouldn't be alarmed if you hear the shots. pete? >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, marcus and laura. part of the shots spotter testing taking place on different freeways along contra costa county and might be related to the testing and not disclosing the locations and making folks aware of it. what is it? it's been around for quite sometime and seeing it around different cities in the bay area. basically sensors set up there at least in the station set up along the freeway to detect where gunshots are being fired.

from there, an alert is sent out to officers who can then respond to this specific location. chp reports there are over 100 east bay freeway shootings between 2015 to 2017 along contra costa county freeways, highway 4 as well as interstate 80 where we are standing here. chp did beef up the patrols and installed cameras along highway 4 and no information if it led to arrests related to freeway shootings and basically the shot spotter technology is another tool. testing will begin on the freeways starting 9:00 p.m. and ending around 4:00 a.m. live here in pinole, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. 5:02 right now. the nation's highest court could see the biggest shift in a generation. supreme court justice anthony kennedy announced he's retired. it is still sending washington into a friend zi.

vladimir putin on july 16th in helsinki, finland. both made a joint announcement. this is the second in-person meeting between the two leaders and we'll continue to bring you breaking news here. happening today, the first lady goes back to the border. melania trump will visit detention centers housing migrants. we don't know where she is going but last week she met with officials and children at a facility in texas. some people were upset with her outfit choice. she wore a jacket which read -- you can see it here on the back if she turns. i read, i don't really care. do you? her spokesperson said it was just a jacket an not a hidden message. the president said it was a message directed at the media. richmond leaders reach out, trying to deal with the problem most every city dealing with to one degree or another. talk about prostitution.

dozens gathered last night at richmond's first-ever public forum focused on trying to control it. police say that officers are often focused on fighting other crime. >> we can't always be here. right? there's so many more people in the community to help us solve this problem. so i think together we can really impact this problem. >> people say that the problem in richmond has recently been a lot more in the open. this is in part because underground websites and personal pages aren't allowed to operate. working to make areas safer. it's a pilot project in downtown san jose. vta says it means walkers, bikers and cars cross train crossings and might have railings and signsage to make i clearer and allow trains do go

faster. summer means a lot of things to a lot of people but in oakland it's all about paving. leaders plan to announce the summer of paving to see a difference out there. the mayor's office leading a push to pave four times as many city streets this year. usually 6 miles of roadway. this summer they're aiming for 25 miles. 5:07. firefighters still investigating how a string of grass fires erupted in south san jose last night. the flames broke out just after 4:00. this was the view from sky ranger. not long after they started. the sprinklers on the golf course helped put out the flames. the course wasn't damaged and the flames dangerously close to a mobile home park. thankfully that fire never reached there. no one was hurt and no structures were burned. investigators say that the fires are suspicious. and tree lovers loving this

bit of news right here. one of the two largest unprotected giant redwood groves left in the world is now in pretty good hands. save the redwoods announced its purchase of the red hill. it is in the sierra nevada. the property contains 110 ancient giants. save the redwoods will transfer the land to the u.s. forest service for another option for visitors. right now, 5:08 this morning, we are starting out with cool conditions. if you're going out to some of the hiking trails in the south bay, it starts out nice and cool around san jose at 58 degrees. at 10:00, 62. lots of sunshine today and a little bit warmer heading through early afternoon. but overall, a nice day. as we look at the forecast for the alameda county fair today, good day to head out there while it's still cool. reaching into the mid-70s today

and make sure you bring the sunscreen and maybe a bottle of water and enjoy your time out there. our highs today for the tri-valley make it up to 84 degrees in livermore. antioch 86 degrees. palo alto 78 and 80 in san jose. o oakland looking at 73. tomorrow temperatures go way up so i'll have a look at those numbers coming up. mike, there are three spots to watch on 680? >> first one i told you about handling last. least of the worries right now. we have seen a couple of crashes reported right here through the sunol and fremont corridor. the rest of the bay flowing smoothly. vargas, a report moving to the shoulder. you see slowing off of 84 merge. and then another crash and there may be a lane blocked there. earlier incident we told you about is a hazard in the roadway. something may have been causing flats. three vehicles on the shoulder and let you know if chp finds

off the dublin interchange in toward fremont. good morning to you. we get the latest gdp numbers today. stocks faded again wednesday. the nasdaq was hit really hard. amazon is making a big change. it will work with local entrepreneurs to set up local delivery. you it was $10,000 or more. they help you set up a private delivery business with an amazon labeled van and a uniform and you pick up packages from amazon warehouses and deliver them to neighborhoods. now, this is a way for amazon to avoid problems stirred up by president trump over the u.s. postal service. president trump says amazon deliveries hurt the u.s. post office's bottom line. that is not true but amazon is covering its bets in case the president makes some sort of move to interfere with the company's relationship. we just got the latest state employment data.

station in san jose, 55 degrees at 6:00. and low 60s by 10:00. if you have to get out the door a little bit later, it is in the low 70s by noon. looking at our high temperatures for today, for the south bay, los gatos, 82 degrees. warmer than it was yesterday. 85 in walnut creek and 73 in oakland today. still cool at half moon bay at 62 degrees. and 70 in san mateo. san francisco also coming up a couple of degrees but still fairly cool with some gusty westerly winds and temperatures in the upper 60s there and 84 today in sonoma. much of the north bay reaching into the 80s. as our winds come in from the north, it is gusty up there in the north bay and the bay area sees winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour. tomorrow, our winds start to shift and the streamlines show you the direction of the winds. starting to come over from the north bay. as we go into friday and then they shift offshore for saturday

and that's going to be the hottest and driest day because we won't have the ocean breeze and also very dry air originating from over the land. making weekend plans, let me know what you're doing on facebook and twitter. we'll talk about the weekend forecast. as we look at the 7-day forecast for the inland valleys, from 83 today to 93 tomorrow. and up to 100 degrees on saturday. and then sunday it comes down a few degrees and still going to be hot. next week we get the major cooling and the natural air conditioning returns and then looking at san francisco low 80s by saturday and 72 on sunday. overall, nice weekend there. mike, you're tracking a crash in the tri-valley. >> you're tracking the heat coming up next couple of days. right now a crash which caused slowing over last 20 minutes. the rest of the bay. looking at the sensors here. smooth drive for most. over here sunol with a slow down and looks like it's less focused

degrees as you get started and in the tri-valley, 55 degrees. 54 in san francisco. with some breezy wintsds. 47 degrees in the north bay. martinez, a spot to reach into the 80s today. and it starts out in the mid-60s. we all have that nice and cool start but the temperatures will spread out as we go through the day with inland valleys into the mid-80s and some 60s for the coast. so i'll have a look at our weekend forecast and gets really hot. that's coming up. mike is watching two spots. >> two spots in particular, kari. first one, bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are turned on. these cars seem to be avoiding that lane. over toward the fast track. i saw a tow truck in there and might be a fender bender there. i think lane number seven there. tracking that. i'll let you know as it affects the approach. a light build. it was pretty gradual over there, as well. no problems for the maze.

if -- between russian president vladimir putin and u.s. president donald trump. it was between them and another city and, of course, the news coming out it was going to be here and wanted to bring up the significance of helsinki, finland, and the relationship to russia. you can see we're leaving port right now. there's downtown helsinki. this is a city of about 600,000 plus people. it is a democracy. very western area. if you look to the left you will see the islands as we are sailing out to sea heading to sweden. next port of call. over there, it's hard to see but along the shoreline there where the buildings are is the u.s. embassy, might be a place that president trump stopping during his visit here. helsinki is located between sweden. sweden to the west which is where we're heading right now an then russia to the east. and this used to be russian territory. in the early 20th century. but finland declared the

independence after the revolution of 1917. and it never became a territory or it was never occupied by the soviet union. there was some money exchanged between finland and russia and russia also took some of its land so there's been this relationship where you have finland which is western democracy, more -- western european city and russia the neighbor just to the east of it so you had this relationship and that's significant because you will have the russian president coming here and interestingly finland is not a member of nato. that was something else our tour guide brought up today. i assume it's perhaps the opinion of the russians, of the country, such that people here that they want to keep things calm and nice and of course joining nato, next russia, obviously not a member of nato, just a little perspective on the type of people here and the country and, of course, going to be a beautiful place. they usually have very, very cold winters but here we are on a day in the 70s and the sun

will never go down tonight. >> yeah. such an interesting perspective. background on helsinki, as well. bob redell, thank you. enjoy the rest of your trip, as well. 5:35. new this morning, a chaotic scene near downtown san jose over night. it all happened at vine and edwards. so a lot of police sirens in the area if you heard them. that's why. chris sanchez live with where the investigation stands this morning. good morning, kris. >> reporter: san jose police left in the last half hour and the street is a mess of glass. all the way up and down the intersection. also, across the street. you see skid marks and several parked cars also hit. let's show you the scene just after it happened. there were five cars in all involved and someone that seemed to just be in the wrong place at the wrong time so badly trapped, the firefighters had to use the

jaws of life to get them out. even with those jaws of life it took firefighters about 20 minutes to free that person. and get them on their way to the hospital. that person's vehicle was t-boned in the middle of the intersection by a pickup truck with three people who fled the scene. officers found two of them immediately. they were injured. they were sent to the hospital. they'll be checked out and then they'll be talking with police. the driver, though, did get away and officers are still looking for that person. now, it is going to be a rough morning for several other folks whose cars were parked out here and hit when it all happened. they may not even know it happened. a neighbor did show us pictures of another crash that happened just about in the same intersection just yesterday about 12 hours ago. we do know that in this area, though it is highly residential, a lot of folks drive too fast for these conditions. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:36 right now. developing, the search is on for

a hit and run driver who slammed into a pedicab carrying a family of four on san francisco's waterfront. this happened yesterday afternoon on the embarcadero near pier 29. the driver of the pedicab is in critical condition. the mother suffered serious injuries and the family's two children were also hurt. people who work with the driver are in shock. >> very shaken up. i mean, this is my friend that i'm very close with. a person i work with and hang out with outside of work. >> that car actually struck a second pedicab, as well. only glancing it. authorities say that the car, a light colored sedan, last seen headed toward the bay bridge. new this morning, the chp is looking for a driver in a hit and run that led to a crash involving several cars. this is the area where it happened. a little after midnight in walnut creek just south of the highway 24 flyover. the chp says the crash initially affected both directions and

most of the damage happened in the southbound direction. no one had any serious injuries. all lanes reopened a short time ago. now to continuing coverage of the pawnee fire in lake county. today an assistance center opens to help people impacted and hopeful news. people are allowed to return home. flames 30% contained. that fire broke out saturday, quickly grew prompting mandatory evacuations in spring valley. a community of about 840 people. four homes in a row burned to the ground in one block. those who lived there were able to return for the first time yesterday. >> i wanted to look, paw through some of the stuff. see if there was anything. there's not. >> so hard it must be for them to return to that. the fire's destroyed a dozen homes and then burned more than 13,000 acres.

officials say about 300 people are still evacuated. our hearts go out to them. definitely. in high school our house burned down. >> i remember that. you know what it's like then. >> nothing compared to that. it was just the roof. but yeah. disruption to the household, we had to move out for a while. recover everything. >> frightening. >> i can't imagine what it's like for folks out there. thoughts and prayers with them, of course. smooth drive. on the roadways, focus on the traffic flow. only issue is really over here. 680 southbound out of pleasanton to sunol. vargas crash blocking lanes. may be causing more slowing with crews arriving. looking over here, nice easy drive toward the bay bridge toll plaza. sunlight over here in to laal to. easy drive. that sun is coming on pretty strong. >> clear skies. that's nothing, right? >> nope. nothing at all. compared to the weekend.

i love it when i say that. the weekend. >> the week. almost here. >> it is. >> friday eve for us. we like to call it. so we're making plans for the weekend. and oh, look at the range in temperatures. you'll find awe cross the bay area. the coast will be up to 80 degrees. the bay at 86. and dangerous heat for the inland valleys reaching 100 degrees on sunday. it cools down just a bit. especially for the coast. where we'll be in the low 70s inland areas. up to 90 degrees but still quite warm. so if you're out to the fillmore jazz festival this weekend in san francisco, keep in mind it starts out comfortable with some mid-70s but will be in the low 80s for the early afternoon hours. and of course, with the crowds and the warm temperatures, not much of a wind, so just be mindful it's going to get quite warm. you want to meet mike. he's going to be emceeing the soy and tofu festival. the event inside st. mary's

we have to closely monitor this as the winds pick up and we will have some very dry conditions as our temperatures go up to 100 degrees for the inland valleys. on saturday, then it gradually comes down. much bigger cooling for tuesday of next week. san francisco with upper 60s for today. 80 by saturday. and then 72 overall a nice weekend for san francisco. and some of the coastal areas with some 60s next week. as we head over to mike, tracking the trivalley. >> the overall commute looks great. peninsula, north bay. bay bridge metering lights are on. here we have had a crash in the 5:00, start of the 5:00 hour. a second crash and then third in sunol out of pleasanton and seeing the slowing adding with the commute building and just past the merge and really exaggerated the impact on the

off seasonal hiring. back to school, fall and holiday jobs at hundreds of its stores. they're hoping to grab top talent before everyone else. the company says that it will offer competitive wages and other benefits. as we just mentioned, employers are having a tough time finding work earls to fill jobs. all new this morning, a manpower group survey says the most difficult jobs for employers to fill right now are skilled laborers. worst shortage in 12 years. experts say electricians, welders and mechanics are in high demand. that survey found employers are bringing back retired workers and recruiting part timers just to fill the gaps. you could end up paying more if you're in the market for a new car. toyota said it might have to raise prices on the vehicling including in the use including the camry in response to
