bay. good day to get out to the park. go hiking. be active today. because it will be cooler compared to the hot weekend ahead. so we'll talk about that coming up. and mike is tracking some trouble for the tri-valley. >> showing the heat in a second and looking over here for the speeds. really come down. look at this map and most of it is looking green. that is a great commute for most of the bay. but southbound 680 is a problem pretty much all of the 5:00 hour. a number of crashes keep building in the area. vargas and then backup, another crash. backed up and slowing from stone ridge down into the merge with highway 84. additional traffic coming in now from livermore and pleasanton adds to the problem and crashes that continue to happen in the middle lanes there. that's why there's the problem. tri-valley drive. about 15 to 20 minutes slower than you like to be in the area heading south from the dublin interchange and fremont for 680. approaching the bay bridge, pretty much at speed.

under 20 minutes from highway 4 past berkeley and the backup at the bay bridge, guys. >> thank you. 6:00 right now. happening tonight, if you live in contra costa county you might hear gunshots along freeways. chp officers are testing a shot spotter technology to notify them the moments the shots happen. >> pete suratos is live in pinole this morning. it was added to prevent freeway shootings. are they adding more now? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. the testing is happening along different parts at different freeways. we'll show you where we're standing here along 80 in pinole. chp not disclosed exactly where the testing is going to take place and will happen along some of the freeways. but i was on scene last week in san francisco. came to mind where the shot smart technology used for officers use the technology to respond to a shooting in the mission district.

now, the way it works, you guys mentioned it there. involves sensors set up in a given area which can then detect when gunshots are being fired and from there an alert to officers in the area to respond to the specific location. chp reports in the east bay 116 freeway shootings between 2015 to 2017. a good number of them in contra costa county. as a result chp beefed up the patrols and cameras along highway 4 and no information on if it's led to arrests related to freeway shootings. back out here live. 80 in pinole. a freeway, as i mentioned, locations for this testing have not been disclosed and will take place roughly between 9:00 p.m. tonight to 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. live here in pinole, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> looks like they know you're up there, too, pete. >> thank you, pete. live to washington, d.c. this morning where all eyes are on the supreme court. the nation's highest court could

soon see its biggest shift in the generation. after supreme court justice anthony kennedy announced he's retiring. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live with what it could mean for gay rights, boeraborti rights. good morning. >> reporter: hi, laura. good morning. it could mean big changes in the future because justice kennedy at tie of many of the close decisions we see sometimes with conservatives, sometimes with liberals. president trump wants to replace him with a solid conservative justice. after a secret white house meeting with retiring justice anthony kennedy, president trump announced he'll pick kennedy's replacement from the list of 25 conservatives. cementing the court's conservative majority. >> we have a pick to come up. we have to pick a great one. we have to pick one that's going to be there for 40 years, 45

years. >> reporter: that has liberals worried. >> this put it is lgbtq community in square shot of having a lot of our rights rolled back. >> reporter: kennedy wrote the decision that struck down bans on same-sex marriage but also upheld president trump's travel ban and helped take apart the voting rights act. liberals fear abortion rights could be in jeopardy. >> the senate should reject on a bipartisan basis any justice who would overturn roe v. wade. >> reporter: democrats want to postpone the confirmation until after november. not likely. >> we'll vote to confirm justice kennedy's successor this fall. >> reporter: what kind of justice are they looking for? >> choose a consensus pick. anything less than that would be unacceptable. >> my ideal man or woman is a cross of socrates and dirty

harry. >> reporter: republicans have a razor thin majority in the house. just enough to confirm president trump's choice. that's why you're seeing democrats trying to push this past a november election. they think they may be able to pick up a few seats and republicans saying, no, they want it done now while they have that 51-vote majority. back to you. >> everything will change. >> yeah. >> thank you so much. coverage continues next on the "today" show. chuck todd live in the studio this morning breaking down the political implications of justice kennedy's retirement. 6:05 right now. richmond leaders reach out trying to deal with the problem most every city is dealing with to one degree or another. talk about prostitution. dozens gathered last night for richmond's first-ever public forum focused on trying to control the problem. police say officers are really often focused on fighting other crime. >> we can't always be here. right? so there's so many more people

out here living in the community to help us involve the problem and i think together we can really impact this problem. >> the people say the problem in richmond has recently been a lot more in the open. it's partly because underground websites and personal pages are no longer allowed to operate. vta is working to make it safer for you. six-month pilot project in san jose saying the current design sometimes means walkers and drivers all cross train tracks with little separation. so they might add railings and signage to make it clearer. all part of the study, lead-up to allow trains to go faster. happening today, summer means a lot of things to a lot of people but in oakland this year it is all about paving. oakland leaders plan to announce what they're calling the summer of paving. hopefully seeing a difference out there. the mayor's office is leading a

push to pave four times as many city streets. usually they pave 6 miles. this summer they're aiming for 25 miles. firefighters are investigating a string of grass fires in south san jose last night just after 4:00 right off of capital expressway near a golf course. this was the view from sky ranger. not long after that fire started. the sprinklers running on did golf course helped put out the flames. the golf course was not damaged but the flames did get dangerously close to a mobile home park. thankfully, the fire never reached there. no one was hurt. no structures were burned. investigators say the fires are suspicious. and the fires will be a concern in this weekend looking live right now from the dublin camera this morning. we have one more day of coolish weather to talk about. but then it really starts to heat up into the weekend. meteorologist kari hall talking about this. tracking it for us, kari. what can we expect?

>> we know that everything is dried out so it doesn't take hot temperatures to have a wild fire burning out of control but the wild fire danger increases tomorrow. begins for solano county and lake county and much of the sken tr central area. all of the areas shaded in orange where we have a fire weather watch in effect. live outside in san jose, we start with sunshine and going to sunnyvale, the temperatures nice and tool with low 60s. still at 10:00. sunshine in the lunch hour. 69 degrees. we're heading into the upper 70s there today. just slightly cooler than normal with the high in antioch at 86 degrees. also 86 in santa rosa. oakland today 73. 67 in san francisco. we'll talk about those hot temperatures coming up. and, mike, still tracking the problems in sunol.

>> i am, kari. having a problem since an early crash in the 5:00 hour. about an hour's worth of problems. fortunately looking at the map, overall, a lighter volume. typical for the summer pattern. doesn't kick in until later. 680 slow and continues to build out of pleasanton down to just south of 84 and the merge, we have a series of crashes. middle lanes affecting. all reports of scenes of a number of crashes there. no major injuries but a problem in the area. coming into the area, also, a shot of dublin and point out the steadily moving traffic. pretty much at the limit for livermore and dublin and then the scenes of the crashes. meanwhile in the south bay, look how light for san jose. easy drive. back do you. >> mike, were you a toys r us kid? all right. here's your chance.

it's a nice, clear day as we start out looking live in san jose. right now, 6:30, we are going to start out with some 50s this morning. and very pleasant day. you better enjoy it because we'll see those temperatures reaching into the mid-70s by early afternoon. and for the weekend, we're talking 90s. even some triple digit where you live possibly. i'll have a look at that in less than five minutes. over45 minutes, that's how long we're reading in the middle there 580. dublin interchange to the scene of a number of crashes near vargas road. a tough drive for the tri-valley. times and let you pick your route. very happy thursday to you. we got the latest gdp numbers. stocks again faded on wednesday. nasdaq once again very hard hit. amazon just a short time ago announced it's purchased an online pharmacy.

expect drug and drugstore stocks to take a hard hit today at the open at 6:30. amazon also says it's going to work with local entrepreneurs for local delivery. you invest a minimum of $10,000 and they help you set up a private delivery business with an amazon labeled van and uniform. pick up packages from amazon warehouses, deliver them to neighborhoods. this is a way for amazon to avoid probables stirred up by president trump over the u.s. postal service. president trump said amazon deliveries hurt the u.s. post office's bottom line. this is not true. but amazon is covering its bet in case the president makes a move to interfere with the company's relationship. we just got the latest state unemployment data and it's really solid. here in northern california, especially. when you look at areas with million people or more, san jose ties four other cities in the united states for the lowest employment in the --

unemployment in the nation. among smaller towns, redwood city, south san francisco area has the lowest unemployment, 2%. marcus and laura, i mentioned this at 5:00 a.m. i wanted to make sure the 56 a.m. audience heard about this, too. this foal low is scott maxwell, just a nice little story. he's a scientist who helped put the mars probablies on to mars. he and his scientist wife just celebrated an anniversary the other day. he posted the cards to each other online. unknowingly they got each other the same card. and then if you look really closely both of them then added the planet pluto with a pen. >> wow. >> unknowingly -- not knowing the other person to do the same. >> i love that! >> my other part of the job is people yelling at each other and nice every once in a while to come across something and you're like -- >> who yells at each other? >> politics. >> oh. i thought you meant in the newsroom. >> you know?

much of the south bay in the upper 70s and low 80s. cupertino and downtown san jose, up to 80 degrees an 85 degrees in pleasanton and 75 in hay ward. the coast will be in the low 60s and belmont, 73 degrees. 68 degrees in mission district and 86 today in santa rosa. starting to warm up with breezy winds. winds from the north and keeping the coastal areas cool and the shift in the wind makes a huge difference for tomorrow. more northerly wind and blowing offshore. will heat up the temperatures and it's going to be so dry. look at how our temperatures respond as high pressure moves in. heading up to 100 degrees for the valleys on saturday. it cools off i guess a little bit on sunday. still hot. we get major cooling next week and san francisco will stay comfortable but a nice 80 degrees with sunshine comfortable place for the weekend. mike, you are still focused on the problem area.

>> also called the tri-valley. 680 really jammed up today through pleasanton. 680 slow off the dublin interchange. the rest of your bay shows an easy, light drive. the metering lights on at the bay bridge. not getting around those and hoping to help you get around the backup. all the backup there immediately approaching 84 suddenly started to clear. i'll check with chp. i believe the next update shows that at least cleared a couple of the lanes. merge off 84 not so bad. 680 southbound slow. look at waze. that's why it is now once again down through pleasanton. taking about an hour and four minutes down 680. saving you 15 minutes joining in off highway 84 or stanley. those are options. also an option, nbc bay area right there. that's the team on your profile. let's get back to the maps and aside from the slow drive for the tri-valley, smooth drive through contra costa county.

north bay man who ran into a rebate runaround on 6:24 right now. and nbc bay area responds to a north bay man who ran into a rebate run around on the new appliances. >> the consumer team helped the shopper get the reward. consumer investigator chris chmura explains. >> larry miller saw a deal he couldn't refuse. buy four appliances get a 10% rebate. he said he filled out the paperwork and sent it along with everything he needed to samsung. he waited for his rebates. and it never arrived. at first, larry said samsung told him it didn't receive the paperwork so he sent it again. then samsung denied the rebate saying larry bought the

suspects. this is how detectives here in california found and arrested that suspect in the golden gate state killer case. since then, the same process led to arrests in at least four more cold cases across the country. three in just the last week. experts say this could be the secret to solving a lot more. >> i suspect we will be able to put dozens of cold cases to rest. >> people typically come to us because they have a case where they have dna but no leads. >> the second woman you just heard from is the virginia lab doing all the testing. she works there. 7:40 on "today" show joe friar goes inside and explains how it all works. 6:26 right now. tree lovers loving this bit of news. one of the two largest unprotected giant redwood groves left in the world is now in prototy good hands. save the redwoods announced its purchase of red hill near the

warm-up today with some 70s. let's get a look at the high temperatures around the bay area today. tri-valley, up to 84 degrees. 86 in antioch. palo alto up to 78 degrees and san francisco at 67. we're in for a much hotter temperatures tomorrow and i'll talk about the weekend forecast in about seven minutes. mike has the latest update for sunol. >> you might be a little late. we're looking at the props for 680. focus on the rest of the bay looking great right now. just a minor build for hayward and san leandro. south 680 indeed the toughest drive. great improvements. thumb's up there. earlier crashes south of 84 caused the backup and 20 minutes of good clearing through the area. smoother, slower drive getting over towards the san mateo bridge. the live shot shows congestion on the flat section. expect more slowing on the san

mateo side. back to you. >> thank you, mike. problems in the south bay this morning. new this morning, several people injured, several cars damaged after a hit and run crash near downtown san jose overnight. it happened in vine and edwards. not far from highway 87. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live at the scene to bring us up to date. what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: well, i just talked with a guy that owns this small silver sedan. would you believe this is the second time it's hit in the last 12 hours? see that the roadway is strewn with all kinds of glass and there are skid marks, other vehicles here still. five in all involved. show you the scene when it just happened. officers and firefighters had to try to extricate somebody. in all, five cars were involved. someone who seemed to believe in the wrong place at the wrong time so badly trapped that firefighters used the jaws of life. even then, it took firefighters

about 20 minutes to free that person and get them on their way to the hospital. that person's vehicle was t-boned in the middle of the intersection by a pickup truck with three people that tried to flee. officers found two of them, injured. they went to the hospital and then talking to police. the driver got away. the neighbor that showed me the pictures of the car after it was hit he said he wish it is city would do something about the intersection because that is corridor of people tending to drive very, very fast. meantime, the police are looking for that driver who caused all of this mess. and some of these folks may not even know that their cars have been hit. in all, there are about five. one down the street, one across the street. there are two here. and then the one that's just parked here on the lawn, as well. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> not a great thing to wake up to for them. >> thanks, kris. all new for you this morning, we know exactly when president trump will meet russian president vladimir putin. >> the two are going to meet in

helsinki, finland, on july 16th. we brought you this morning breaking nulls in the last hour. "today in the bay's" bob redell happens to be in helsinki on vacation. >> and this morning -- >> reporter: we learned in the last hour that donald trump and vladimir putin of russia meeting here in lovely port city of helsinki, finland. we are on a cruise ship as you can see. part of my vacation. we were talking with a tour guide earlier this morning and she brought it up and sounded like she was actually excited about prospect of a u.s. president to come here for a momentous summit, taking place on july 16th. northern part of europe. you were sweden to the west. we are heading to stockholm right now. and immediately to the east is russia. finland used to be part of russia. just over 100 years ago and then it was in the 1917 after the revolution there in russia that finland declared the independence. never became a member of nato. public opinion polling here seems to suggest that people

don't want to upset the russians and looking there you can see the american flag. can't see with the phone but that's the u.s. embassy located and perhaps a stop that president donald trump visiting meeting with russian president vladimir putin here in helsinki. bob redell, "today in the bay.." >> thank you there. developing right now, the search on for a hit and run driver who slammed into a pedicab carrying a family of four on san francisco's waterfront. it happened yesterday afternoon on the embarcadero. the driver of the pedicab is in critical condition. the mother reunderstand suffered serious injuries and the family's two children also treated. people who work with the driver are in shock. >> very shaken up. this is my friend. very close with. one of the few people i work with i hang out with outside of the work. he's a good friend and hope he pulls through this. >> the car struck a second pedicab, as well. only glancing it.

authorities say the car was a light colored sedan last seen headed towards the bay bridge. the chp looking for the driver in a hit and run that led to a crash involving several cars. this is near the area where it happened. a little after midnight. walnut creek south of highway 24 ramp. chp says the crash initially affected both of the directions. no one had any serious injuries and all those lanes reopened after a short time. 6:36. thousands of migrants will not be housed at the former concord naval weapons station. yesterday, the department of homeland security said it will not set up any camps in concord at this time. there were reports the agency planned to hold nearly 50,000 detainees there. news was a big sigh of relief for a large crowd which filled the concord city hall for the second straight day. demonstrators showed up in protest. 6:36. now to the continuing coverage of the pawnee fire in lake

county. today, an assistance center to helps people impacted. there's hopeful news this morning. nearly 1,000 people are allowed to return home. you may remember the flames, we do know now 30% contained. the fire broke out saturday and quickly grew prompting mandatory e evacuations in spring valley, a community of about 840 people. we do know that four homes in a row burned to the ground in one block and those who live there were able to return home for the first time yesterday. >> i wanted to look, paw through some of the stuff. see if there was anything. there's not. >> just tough. well, the fire destroyed a dozen homes and burned more than 13,000 acres. officials say about 300 people are still evacuated. it is 6:37. a follow-up for now.

we know when a torched library will open up. this is the el sobrante library. authorities say it was arson. no arrests. library officials say they plan to reopen next spring. a spokesperson said electrical systems, ceilings and wall all need replacing. i don't know about the damage to the books, though. >> they're precious. people come together. of course, really donated to the library. remember your libraries, folks. remember, also, we have a lighter commute early but it kicks in later. we have a commute. summertime. i call it the summer late commute. not light commute. we have an issue in the tri-valley. southbound 680 shows a smoother drive through pleasanton. sunol and highway 84. looking at the travel time for the tri-valley. used to be 35 minutes for the southbound 680. now 26 minutes from 580 through the slower drive and toward the

pleasanton area. 25 minutes, highway 4. >> good deal. thank you, mike. no backup heading into the weekend. people are excited. >> yes. hot weekend, too. for the inland areas. but hey, this is the weekend to head to the beach and go poolside. we are looking at temperatures ranging from 80 degrees at the coast to 86 for the bay on saturday. and inland areas dangerous meet. want to make sure you take it easy on saturday with the highs up to 100 degrees. slightly cooler on sunday but it's still going to be very warm. while the bay up to 82 and 72 degrees for the coast. now, mike is going to enjoy some air conditioning at the soy and tofu festival. going to be in the upper 70s there on saturday. but overall, beautiful weather for that at st. mary's cathedral. he will be emceeing.

70s and good day to check out the alameda county fair in pleasanton. the weekend will be hot and today reaching into the mid-70s and we are looking at some quickly cooling temperatures for the evening. now, looking at the highs today palo alto, expect a high of 78 degrees. 73 degrees in oakland. 83 today in napa and san francisco 67. so as you get dress third degree morning, short sleeves and pants. good options for you. but the weekend is going to be hot so we can break out the summer gear and this is also when we will have a fire weather watch for the areas shaded in orange. that includes solano and lake counties. winds rush in from the north, having low humidity and very hot temperatures so we're also watching out for that pawnee fire as we try to get some more containment on that. looking at the temperatures from 83 degrees today to 93 tomorrow. 100 degrees on saturday. big-time cooling by early next week. and looking at san francisco, nice weekend ahead with 80 on

here are the top stories on today in the bay-- welcome back. before you head out the door, the time now 6:55. here are the top stories on "today in the bay." chp officers will start testing new technology tonight aimed at making the drive safer. officers are testing the effectiveness of shot spotters. the technology detects shootings and alerts officers so they can respond quicker. it also helps them find shell casings. it comes after more than 100 shootings on east bay freeways between 2015 and 2017. chp says people may hear gunshots near freeways in contra costa county tonight as they test out those new shot spotters. richmond leaders are trying to deal with a prostitution problem. dozens of people gathered last night for the city's first-ever public forum focused entirely on trying to control prostitution.

police officers are often focused on other crimes so they're asking the community to try to help solve the problem. people say the issue is worse in recent months in part because of underground websites and personal pages can no longer operate. vta trying to boost safety around light rail tracks, launching a six-month pilot project in downtown san jose saying that right now walkers, cyclists and drivers can easily cross train tracks with almost no separation. the transit agency is considering adding railing and signage to make it more clear. and if you're tired of potholes, you are in luck. oakland is starting the summer of paving. the mayor's office is leading the push to pave four times as many streets this year compared to other years. usually they pave six miles of road but this year they're aiming for 25. taking a live look at san jose and vine near edwards. it is where a hit and run driver

this morning slammed into about half a dozen cars. look at the damage left there. this is video right after it happened at about 1:00 in the morning. witnesses say the driver of a pickup t-boned a car in the intersection. the driver was trapped in that wreckage. the pickup then hit at least three other parked cars and ended up outside of a home. investigators say three people got out and ran from the scene. officers tracked down two people nearby. both were injured. the driver facing felony hit an run charges. if you live in eastern contra costa county, grab the smartphone. you might be interested in a new way to stay connected. today the city of brentwood launches a brentwood connect 24/7 app to report code violations or request repairs. they want google to go before it gets here. more than two dozen people attending the meeting last night to express concern about the tech giant's expansion plans in
