emeryville camera.. it is friday morning and we're looking out our window over emeryville. that's where our emeryville camera is and you see folks are up and at it, heading somewhere. maybe off for the weekend. thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia who is off for the weekend. >> enjoying the weekend, already, good for her. >> we have a look at traffic in just a moment. but carry you've been telling us about this all week and today it's here. the heat up again. >> it starts today and temperatures peak tomorrow. so it's going to start out with the mostly clear skies around the bay area. temperatures in the 50s and live look outside in dublin as you head out the door, it's nice and cool. the morning commute looking pretty good and we'll get a lot of sunshine. do not forget the sunglasses before you head out the door. by 1:00 we're already at 81 degrees in fremont as we head up to 87 in san jose.

95 in antioch and santa rosa 94 degrees, san francisco today 73. mike, you're looking a little more long range right now. >> because you know, it's 5:01 if you watch the clock range right now. we're looking at the smooth easy drive, the super commute is kicking in, a little bit of build out of the north bay. a little bit out of the altamont. you see the slowing for 580 here and nothing but green other than that. we move down to south county, 101 still moves easy out of san martin. 17 smooth over the summit but heading south down towards the coast that will be very crowded later on today and tomorrow. if you are heading to the coast, to the beach there, santa cruz, make sure you're very patient there and don't go through the city streets in los gatos, we told you about that problem. the berkeley curve, we took a look earlier about this. this is a smooth drive, easy flow of traffic but good amount of volume. this will pack in later on today because of the folks will be trying to get into the city.

moving out of the city, out of the area we'll show you those patterns and there's the golden gate bridge, we talked about the zipper truck, halfway across the span. they moved that center divide for the lower half of the bridge to get ready for the morning. >> thank you very much. back to breaking news now. here's a live look at the castro where police are investigating a suspicious death across the street from a popular nightclub. let's show you where that is. they found a man in the parking lot across in the bad lands. this is video of authorities at the scene earlier this morning. you can see still very active. around 1:00 this morning, officers responded to reports of a fight in progress and they say they found a man with life threatening injuries who then died, "today in the bay's" pete suratos is asking questions and back with us at 5:30. airports across the bay area are preparing for a record amount of people to pass through and if you're heading to the airport, there are some changes

at tsa you need to know about. sharon katsuda is live and people share saying they are also prepared for the long line. >> reporter: yes, marcus. i can confirm it's definitely busy already. take a look. you can see the long lines here. we saw people already lining up as early as 4:00 this morning for the 6:00 flight. the tsa says it's screens 2.2 million passengers each day. they expect that number to hit 2.6 million today. that's because it's summertime and fourth of july falls on a wednesday this year. travelers aren't just doing road trips for a typical three-day holiday weekend. they are getting away for the whole week. travelers we talked to this morning came early to beat the rush. >> i have a family reunion this weekend. very excited to see my family. >> tsa usually gets pretty backed up. you got to get here early and you have a lot of first time travelers with kids and just don't know the rules.

so you need to get early to the airport, yeah. >> the tsa says arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight and a new focus on powders, not just liquid in the security check. if you have more than about a soda can's worth of powder, they say pack it in your check-in baggage instead of the carry-on. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> developing for you, firefighters are still on the scene of a grass fire which briefly threatened homes last night. this is also closed both directions of interstate 780. this all started around 7:00 last night in vallejo. this is near glenn cove road. for a time it did burn towards the freeway and group of homes nearby. firefighters closed 780 for two hours and those flames burned ten acres of state park. so far there's no word on how that fire started.

developing right now, authorities are looking at potential links to other unsolved murders after the death of a cold case killer yesterday as deputies were closing in. steve crawford took his own life yesterday morning. authorities were about to serve a search warrant in connection with the case dating back 44 years. this is 19-year-old arlis perry, the suspect there. raped and murdered in a stanford church in 1974. crawford was a stanford security guard at the time. his neighbors are stunned. >> first thing i thought of, how did he make it so long? >> our detectives continue to piece together additional information to this tragic puzzle. and we were able recently to link crawford's dna to the crime scene. >> perry died from being stabbed repeatedly with an ice pick. chief lori smith said crawford had always been considered a person of interest. >> 5:05 right now. the latest out of maryland. a newsroom is mourning the loss

of five of their own after a gunman stormed the capitol gazette yesterday and the journalists still managed to put out this morning's paper. take a look here, like any other day. it's really tragic and just a tragic day. that investigation into the senseless mass shooting is now just beginning. >> "today in the bay's" jennifer johnson is live in annapolis, maryland with a search for answers this morning. it hits close to home for all of us, jennifer. >> reporter: yeah, as you mentioned in the beginning of this piece, this is the front page of the capital gazette, despite losing four journltists and five staff members, still coming together and putting out this edition of the newspaper today. 38-year-old jarrod ramos has been charged with five counts of first degree murder overnight. he has a bail hearing set for 10:30 this morning.

nbc news is reporting police are at the suspect's maryland home 38-year-old jarrod ramos hours after he allegedly open fire inside a local annapolis newspaper. >> this person was prepared shoot people. his intent was to cause harm. >> the suspect open fire with a long gun killing five. >> two inside with a shotgun and black shirt and green pants. >> terrified reporters tweeted begging for help. approximately 170 people were inside the building when he opened fire. >> it's scary, very scary. i'm a little shaken up about everything. >> the police aren't saying what the gunman's motivation is yet but say the capital gazette had received threats via social media as late as thursday. >> they were our friends, we're grieving for these guys. >> reporter: police arrived, 60 seconds one week after training for this exact scenario and found smoke grenades allegedly

left behind by the gunman. police did search the suspect's laurel maryland home 30 miles from here. we don't know what they found. police are supposed to brief us later this morning. obviously this is still an active crime scene and they are looking at surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, i'm live in annapolis maryland, back to you. >> a tragic story. >> the migrant crisis clearly is far from over. as we showed you on the midday newscast yesterday, melania trump made the second trip to immigration facility. this time near the border in arizona. meantime this is video of a brazilian mother and son reuniting in chicago. a federal judge there ordered the trump administration yesterday to immediately reunite the pair. they were separated four weeks ago. this follows a san diego federal court ruling this week ordering the administration to quickly reunite families they've separated.

>> this is the scene starting to play out in the streets of america, hundreds of women fighting on behalf of migrants hit the streets in washington, d.c. yesterday marching past trump's hotel there. and the department of justice. nearly 600 women were reportedly arrested yesterday including a congress woman, 600. there was also a rally in el cerrito last night as well. you can expect more of this protest tomorrow across the country and across the bay area here. protests are planned in more than 20 cities including san francisco, san jose and oakland and concord and santa rosa. we have a complete list on our website, nbcbayarea.com. 5:09 right now. you might see a lot of traffic on the peninsula as secret service ushers in former president barack obama today. mr. obama is attending the fundraiser in atherton and raising money for the democratic party. the kron kel is reporting tickets are as high as $230,000 per couple. the cheapest tickets here, get

morgan hill and 56 degrees in oakland and in palo alto. and if you're on your way to diridon station, here's a look at our san jose temperature trend for the morning. we will be seeing temperatures in the upper 50s through about 7:00. then by 10:00 we're at 70 degrees, still comfortable. but starting to warm up at noon. we're at 78 degrees as we head into the mid-80s today. alameda county fair is looking very hot today. yesterday was in the 70s. today upper 80s, wouldn't be surprised if we briefly hit 90 degrees. make sure you're prepared for that if you're going to be out there for quite a while. martinez is going to be hot today. wanted to show you one of the places where the temperatures will be even hotter today, up to 93 degrees already by 3:00. we should be a couple of degrees above that for our high today. antioch will reach 95 degrees -- 94 degrees in santa rosa and san francisco today up to 73

degrees. so here's the issue. we are going to have a red flag warning in effect for much of the north bay. that includes solano county and lake county as well as northern sonoma county. that means that humidity will be low and temperatures will be high and any little spark could cause a wildfire in the pawnee wildfire area. we are getting containment but we'll have to watch that for the potential of some changing winds and changing fire directions too. as we look at our temperatures, where it will be the hottest our inland areas, parts of the north bay where we're looking at triple digit temperatures for tomorrow afternoon. it's still going to be hot but not as hot. as we look at the brief cooling trend as we head into next week. min mike, a slowdown in san jose. >> debris on the roadway. chp swung through the area and didn't see anything but they may

have because we just arrived at what we call the scene, there must be something going on. just around mckee north of this shot and then now see the slowing just building into this camera shot. a little extended slowdown from the scene all the way up to oakland road. somewhere between mckee and oakland road where the debris and the car that hit it are right now. i'm thinking everybody should be moved off quickly but i'll continue to track that. meanwhile the other incidents are out of lanes and no major issues as get up into the bay bridge. the maze and little bit of a backup for the cash lanes and contra costa county, highway 4 moves smoothly. hot as kari showed you tomorrow, even today. over here an easy drive. look at the travel times through the maze, great for the upper shore freeway and bay bridge toll plaza. twin peaks tunnel remains closed and we've been telling you about it all week. i want to show you the last of the weekly reports the kl and m will have delays and uses buses

the iconic "mexicali rose" restaurant in oakland. it's 5:25, today is the last day to dine at the iconic mexicali rose, open more than 90 years and tonight it will close its doors for the last time. the owners are announced their retirement on facebook last week. lost some of its long time eateries in the last few years back in 2016, denova dell ka tessen closed after 90 years of brings and as did the company ravioli factory. all of the good ones are saying good-b good-bye. >> what happens when county workers schedule a strike at the same time the county fair is about to start? in this case the show will go

degrees very nice at 7:00 and then add 11:00, 69 degrees, still not bad, 1:00, upper 70s and it continues to heat up fast. today half moon bay, it will be very nice reaching in the low 6's and that's the kind of weather we'll see for much of the weekend. as we look at those inland valleys, 95 degrees in antioch and even hotter tomorrow. we'll talk about all that's going on around the bay area and help you make plans around the heat. mike, you've been tracking what's happening now for the commute. >> looks a little odd. we're starting with san jose, we see slowing northbound. now, we often see a first about this time but this actually has root roots in a crash 101 north of 280 and 680 interchange and sounds like someone hit debris earlier. chp arrived on scene and then we saw slowing. that's right here, slow for about 680 clear by the time you get to oakland road. the rest of the bay shows an

easy drive as you would expect this time on a friday. 5:31. almost 32 now. and we start to see those metering lights on a typical friday but today it's atypical, light because we're approaching that holiday next week. we're talking about how that's going to affect you and we'll talk about our factors coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. right now we want to get to the breaking news in san francisco's castro district. this morning police are investigating a suspicious death in the neighborhood. this happened right across the street from the popular badlands nightclub. pete suratos is live with what we know at this hour. good morning, pete. >> reporter: in the past few minutes, the scene cleared up behind me in the parking lot right across the street from the badlands nightclub, we do know it's being treated as a suspicious death by san francisco fleece but don't know information out today of that. we did see a car being towed away, we're going to get more information at this point. we're looking at video from the

scene earlier this morning and according to san francisco police, roughly around 11:00 a.m., they were responding to either a fight or robbery in progress in this area on 18th and castro and when they arrived they found a person in pretty bad shape and medical personnel were not able to save him. he passed away from his injuries and at this point police still aren't explaining how it happened and it's unclear what type of injuries the victim had but currently being treated as a suspicious death at this point. we'll continue to provide any new updates as they come in. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. readers are waking up to haunting front page in maryland, the capital gazette went on doing what it does best, printed a newspaper in despite of deadly ram page in which five co-workers were killed. across the top, the five people shot in cold blood. four of them are journalists at the paper and authorities in

annapolis say a man with a grudge against the paper fired a shotgun through the glass and then went inside. here's a look at that man police arrested. 38-year-old jarrod ramos, one young intern who hid under a desk talks on the "today" show about the horrifying experience and aftermath. >> unfortunately we saw -- we had to pass two bodies of our colleagues which was something that nobody should ever have to stomach. it's unfortunate that somebody would come into a place that only reports truthful stories that are fact based and unleash hell on the office. >> so sad anyone had to live through that. that tweet from that intern's phone was among the first signals a rampage was going on. three other workers were also injured. police arrived at the scene within about one minute of that shooting and officers satisfy they found a suspect hiding under a desk. >> a final update to a story we have been updating for years

now. the family of this oakland teenager, who was at the center of a controversial brain death case said she died last week. you might remember this story started when she underwent a ton sill lektmy and the coroner ruled she died then. the family would not accept that ruling and moved her to new jersey for continuing care. jahi, now almost five years older passed away from excessive bleeding and liver failure following a new operation. the family says it's been a long fight to keep her on life support. >> she passed away surrounded in love on her time and not on some doctor's time. her mother released a statement, if you're tired and worn out from the struggle and want to be with god, i give you permission

to go. jahi's family will bring her back to the bay area to lay her to rest. >> the suspects in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire are scheduled to be back in court for a pretrial hearing that may alter the course of the case. following a hearing monday, the attorney for derrickalmena suggested his client may be considering a plea deal. the hearing is expected to pick up on negotiations and trial for amena and max harris is still on track to again in mid-july. great news to tell you about this morning. this is coming from the fire up north. this is burning in lake county. firefighters say the pawnee fire is not growing this morning. mandatory evacuations in the double eagle community are over and that fire is 50% contained. now, it has charred more than 13,000 acres, destroying 22 structures, including several homes. >> kari has been mentioning the dangerous heat coming our way and in east bay you will have

one more place to try to cool down this weekend. the water playground at the popular water park in the east bay is going to reopen. blue goose park in brentwood was given the all clear after a section of the park was shut down monday. inspection from the health department shut it down after four kids were vomiting and had diarrhea after playing in the water playground on june 11th. inspectors discovered maintenance problems and those problems have now been fixed. >> can you believe it? june 29th and first half of 2018, just about to go in the books and with that the second half of the year, caltrains monthly passes will cost you a little bit more. caltrain is adding an additional day to the monthly pass rate. the passes will not be calculated on 15 days of travel instead of 14. those costs varying from the number of zones you currently travel. july's monthly passes went on

sale eight days ago. >> all right, look at this, a lot of green as you would expect and hope for. bottom of the screen right where it says san jose, you see that little blip starting to clear up a little better, looks like whatever the kroosh was, the debris hit clearing from 101. 101 the opposite case over here in san martin. i'll point here, northbound a little bit of slowing just starting to build towards morgan hill. we are looking at a later start to your commute because it is friday. but we do still have the typical commute spots for the longer drive coming to slowing a bit for 101 again. over here out of the altamont, we're looking good into livermore, 25 minutes from grant line over towards the dublin interchange. no surprises, just a gradual build as is often the case on a friday. as we move over here, the peninsula, 101 with headlights going north past university, an easy flow of traffic on the peninsula expected this to get even more crowded as the day

continues and pack it in through the weekend. peninsula is very popular. >> yeah, or the -- going to find something that's going to be comfortable where you can enjoy your weekend, take a look at this, you make plans, tomorrow will be dangerous heat for the inland valleys, up to 100 degrees but the bay 86 and the coast at 80 degrees and the 50 degree water temperatures will be nice. it will be 72 for the coast on sunday, 82 degrees for the bay and inland areas 90 degrees on sunday, you may start out on music in the square in redwood city, it's going to be nice there, 81 at 4:00. by the time the music starts, it will be comfortable, 77 and cruising with breezy winds through the night.

for tomorrow, the solano county fair kicks off and it's going to be hot. the mid of the day, upper 80s with mostly sunny skies but it will cool down for the evening. you may want to head out earlier in the day or later on in the afternoon. you may wrap up part of the weekend in san francisco at the fill more jazz festival. tomorrow will be one of the warmer days as we reach the low 8 0e's in the middle of the yan afternoon. the music lineup going on all day into the evening. then here's a look outside in heavenly, we're going to see sunshine. you may be heading that direction to get ready to watch the fireworks for the fourth of july. and already have fireworks going on in russian river valley. it will be warm throughout the day. 93 degrees but some upper 70s by sunday. big cooling by the end of the weekend. and if you're going to hit the road to head down to stan atant

what are you dog this weekend? it's going to be heating up. here's a look at our walnut creek temperature trend. starts out nice and then it goes up and up and we're up to 91 degrees by 3:00 today. and it's going to be a hot weekend. but what about the fourth of july? we'll talk about that coming up in less than five minutes. 92 here heading west. keep going to the coast, might be a little cooler. kari will tell you how much. right now it's a cool commute, meaning an easy drive for most parts. we'll check on the slowing we saw in san jose. >> families in san mateo county have a big dilemma in the weeks ahead. the child development center in the ravenswood city school district closes tomorrow and a new child care center won't open until august 15th. that means there's a six-week gap in child care. several books working together to find and pay for alternatives to help those families out.

>> sunday is july 1st and you need to know several new laws will take effect. the dmv is reminding us all about some of them. if you're on a bus with a seatbelt, you'll now be required to wear them on your uber or lyft driver will be subject to stricter drug alcohol limits, only can be .04%, normal legal limit is .08. >> happening today, a group of san francisco moms are heading to the east bay to protest. they are planning a sit-in outside the southwest key children's shelter in pleasant hill. they want to show support for separated migrant kids. >> the president's administration is trying to convince other companies to crack down on migrants. >> stopping people before they leave for the united states. >> it's something other administrations have tried. remember 2014, all of the kids were coming in alone and then president obama met with leaders from central america.

francisco, up to 73 degrees. as you get a look at the 7-day forecast, getting dressed this morning, it's a day for layers because you do need a jacket starting out this morning but later on today you'll be good with some short sleeves or a sleeveless shirt or shorts and also sandals. maybe you can make it a beach day or pool day as it gets really hot this afternoon. as we kgo to napa valley, 52 degrees at 7:00 and go from the 50s to the 80s and it will be in the upper 80s today. we're watching out for the red flag warning. have some low humidity and high fire danger. red flag warning means you do not burn or do anything that could ignite the dry bush and winds from the north could push the smoke from the wildfire into the bay area. one of the more comfortable places to hang out this weekend will be san francisco. you can even meet cool mike. he'll be out there at the soy and tofu festival tomorrow.

all throughout the day we'll have warm weather. san francisco reaching the lower 80s and santa cruz, it's going to be a great beach weekend. some 70s for much of the weekend but cooler on sunday. mike, now you have a crash in sunol? >> i do. the carash cleared from san jos and this live shot from 20 minutes ago, that was packed in. very easy right now, quick recovery because light flow of traffic. look at this map here, a little slowing towards oakland road now easing up and smooth drive for the rest of the south county, a little slowing through san martin. a little more slowing here. this is sunol. southbound 680, reports of a crash involving a motorcycle. the rider walking around, better news but quite a distraction. so a lot of slowing here crammed into this shot here at 84 where it meets with 680 southbound. the rest of the tri-valley great, contra costa county, no problem, little blip here in the bay point out of pittsburgh and

your drive through the bay area, some spots could be a little bit smoother. transit officials are launching a traffic relief pilot study in the golden gate area. trying to reduce delays on the golden gate bridge and presidio, the pilot study runs through july 15th. you can expect traffic changes through the baker berry tunnel and all of this during the busy fourth of july holiday. so you are encouraged to take public transportation. >> el cerrito is launching a bone marrow drive in honor of an elementa elementary school student who needs a marrow transplant. now it's just a cheek swab, you take a q tip sort of thing and it takes ten minutes. that registry drive goes from tomorrow morning 11:00 to 3:00 at el cerrito community center.
