"today in the bay" continues right now. thanks so much for joining us on this friday morning. laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington, we're going to get to your traffic in just a moment. right now we want to go to carry. >> it's going to be the main topic around the water cooler, you'll want to try to stay cool and hydrated too. here's a live look outside over san jose with a clear start this morning. it's nice and cool now as we check out sunnyvale and our temperature trend for today. from mid-60s at 10:00 and mid-80s by 4:00. we're heading up to 87 degrees

in the south bay. 91 in morgan hill and 95 in antioch today. san francisco, 73. we'll talk about how hot it gets this weekend. mike, that crash turned into a traffic alert. >> this is a motorcycle involved crash. warmer days we we see more motorcycles on the road but they are harder to see on the road. look at the sensors, overall you're looking good but over here, this is the problem sunol, southbound 680, just jammed up as you come down approach the merge with folks coming off highway 84 which was looking light but now with all of the traffic jammed up towards -- i hear only the hov and fast lane are open. those are the two left lanes heading south out of walnut creek. walnut creek way up there and everybody out of san ramon towards pleasanton. the rest of contra costa county looks great as far as the bay bridge.

we don't have the metering lights on. here's the san mateo bridge starting to build. the traffic alert south 680 in sunol. >> 6:02 right now. we continue to monitor breaking news out of san francisco this morning as we look live at the castro. that's where police are investigating a suspicious death across the street from the badlands, a popular nightclub. officers there found a man in a parking lot as they were responding to reports of a fight right around 1:00 this morning. they found that man with life threatening injuries and that man did not survive. it is not clear whether he was involved in the fight. pete suratos is talking with investigators and he will bring us a live report coming up at 6:30. >> 6:01. happening today, the tsa is warning travelers it could be the busiest day ever recorded in our nation's air force. the bay area no exception here. katsuda is live where those lines already forming and i remember the last hour, the lines were extremely long behind you. what are they looking like now? >> yeah, marcus, it hasn't changed at all. it's been packed since 4:00 when we got here. you can see people lined up. earlier we showed you the check out counter and now we're showing you the security checkpoint where it's already backed up. the tsa screens about 2.2 million passengers each day. they expect that number to hit 2.6 million today. that's because it's summertime and fourth of july falls on a wednesday this year. travelers aren't just doing road trips or a typical three-day holiday weekend. they are getting away for the whole week. travelers we talked to this morning came early to beat the rush. >> don't sleep. just go through the night and get here so we can sleep on the airplane. >> tsa usually gets pretty backed up so you got to get here early and you have a lot of first time travelers who are

kids who just don't know the rules. so you need to get early to the airport, yeah. >> the tsa says arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight and there's a new focus on powder, not just liquid in the security checks. so be ready for that and if you have more than a soda can worth of powder such as baby powder, put it in your check-in baggage instead of your carry-on. taking a look here live, you can see the front line closest to us is empty, tsa really pushing that program, if you're willing to pay $85 for five years, you can go onto the checkout point without taking off your jacket and shoes. saves you a lot of time in the future. sharon katsuda "today in the bay." >> certainly saves time when you're running late. i know that for a fact. >> and kids keep their shoes on

too. we're hearing that the young intern who was inside the capital dgazette talking to the "today" show as the terror unfolded and meanwhile readers are waking up to this haunting front page in maryland. right across the top, the five people shot in cold blood. four are journalists at the paper. authorities in annapolis say a man with a grudge against the paper fired a shotgun through a glass door in order to get inside. here's a look at the man. police arrested 38-year-old jarrod ramos. a young intern who hid under a kesk talked on this morning's "today" show about coping with what happened. >> still trying to just decompress, my heart goes out to the familiar a len friends of the people who were unfortunately killed. that's never something that crossed my mind when i took the internship that i might see people die. people that were nothing but welcoming and comforting to me.

>> this tweet from the intern's phone was among the first signals that a rampage was under way. three other workers were also hurt. police arrived on scene within one minute of the shooting. officers found the suspect hiding under a desk. developing right now, firefighters are still on the scene of a grass fire which briefly threatened homes last night. closed both directions of interstate 780 and started around 7:00 in vallejo. this is near glenn cove road. for a time it burned towards the freeway and group of homes nearby. firefighters for two hours, the flames burned two acres and so far there's no word on how this all started. >> verying right now, authorities are looking at potential links to other unsolved murderses after the death of a cold case murder. steve crawford took his life in his san jose home yesterday morning. authorities were about to serve a search warrant in connection with a case dating back 44

years. this is 19-year-old arloss perry, raped and murdered in a stanford church in 1974. crawford worked as a stanford security guard. his neighbors are stunned. >> first thing i thought of, how did he make it so long? >> detectives continue to piece together additional information to this tragic puzzle. and we were able recently to link crawford's dna to the crime scene. >> perry died from being stabbed repeatedly with an ice pick. sheriff lori smith says crawford was always a person of interest. >> well, 6:07. the migrant crisis is far from over. as we showed on the midday newscast, melania trump made the second trip to immigration facilities this time in arizona. meantime, i want you to look at this video of a mother and son and they are reunited in chicago.

a federal judge ordered the trump administration to immediately return the pair. they were separated four weeks ago. this follows a san diego federal court ruling this week ordering that administration to quickly unite families they separated. >> say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here. >> this is the scene starting to play out on the streets of america. hundreds of women fighting on behalf of the migrants hits the streets in washington, d.c. yesterday. marching past trump's hotel and department of justice. nearly 600 women there reportedly arrested yesterday including a congresswoman that was a rally at el cerrito last night as well. you can expect more of those protests tomorrow across the country and here across the bay area. protests are planned in more than 20 cities, including san francisco. san jose, oakland, concord and santa rosa. we have a complete list on our website, nbcbayarea.com. happening today, lawmakers

announcing a funding source to help boost toastal access, this includes $5 million in the new state budget for a park at the creek beach south of half moon bay. it also includes up to $1 million to assist in the eminent domain battle over access to martins beach. as you likely know about now, millionaire and surrounding landowner is in a legal battle to keep that road to martins beach close. the case may be heard by the u.s. supreme court. and you might want to head to the beach this weekend as temperatures are heating up. we're looking live from san francisco which will be one of the cooler spots but still very warm, particularly since a lot of folks don't have air conditioning in the city. kari? >> in san francisco, tomorrow we're talking low 80s, people may be heading over to the beaches and as we take a live look outside this morning. all clear skies and a nice and cool start. if you are going boating this

weekend and for today, there's a small craft advisory in effect and that just let's you know that even if you're just along the coast or sitting at the beach, those waves may be a little unpredictable today. inexperienced boaters should not be out there as the swells increase from the northwest. the temperatures today reach in the mid-60s, coastal areas mid-60s, 73 in the city and oakland up to 78 degrees and look at those inland areas. in the valleys, tri-valley, 92 degrees in livermore, 87 in san jose and 94 today in santa rosa. we'll talk about saturday's forecast and mike, now you have much better news for the tri-valley. >> can't do anything about the temperatures but i can report that that crash the earlier traffic alert quickly as it was issued, it was cleared, included that motorcycle. the rider for the motorcycle was up walking around transported to the hospital so that's better news. no serious injuries or nothing fatal there. we did have that big backup which formed quickly now

still cool as we take a live look outside over the south bay as the sun rises, going to east san jose to evergreen, 61 degrees, that's not bad at 8:00 and it does warm up fast today. we go from 61 to 85 by 2:00 today and it will go up a few more degrees from there. today the start of some hot weather. we'll talk about the peak of the heat and what's ahead for next week coming up in less than five minutes. >> we have yet to hit the peak of the commute but look, it's easing up here in san jose. we'll show you how things are shaping up in the earlier traffic alert through sunol. there should be improvement, good improvement. >> well, very happy friday to you. it's the last business day of the second quarter today. amazon stock jumped and drug store company stocks fell after amazon noungsed yesterday it bought an online farmpharmacy. a.m. zmazon is setting people uh

their own delivery vans to deliver amazon stuff. my first suspicion was that amazon was hedging into bets, the president is angry at amazon and wants the u.s. postal service to charge amazon more to deliver packages. i talked to an amazon executive via satellite who insists that's just not the case. >> it's really just an opportunity to inspire entremendous pentr entrepreneurs to set up small businesses, we're looking for hundreds of small businesses across the united states and we think they'll in turn creates tens of thousands of delivery jobs across the street. >> california statehouse passed a huge privacy bill. the governor signed it last night. it's not as powerful a europe's but really strong. it takes effect in 2020. it will allow you to control whether online companies can sell your data or even keep your data at all. a new survey of home prices says

atherton has the most expensive homes in the united states. $12 million. los altos is second most expensive in the u.s., 6 million in los altos, beverly hills down in fourth. all in all, five of the most expensive cities are in california. >> kris and marcus, this fellow was employee number seven at tesla and helped make the first battery. he was there before elon musk became ceo. a lot of people forget elon musk did not found tesla. he's at the factory and creating this factory working on new battery technology. that will be my guest on "press here." the reason this is important, if you look at the chips that intel makes and if you look at the phones that apple makes, they are finer and faster and more powerful. it's amazing what we've done in technology over the last 10 or 20 years. batteries have not kept up. and we don't perform -- they haven't increased.

outside the window in sunol as the sun rises, nice and cool and it's 55 degrees. now is the time to get some stuff done around the house or getting yard work done going out for a run. if you don't have time to do that and maybe you're heading out for the morning commute. looking at the fremont temperature trend it starts out with low 60s with sunshine. we'll be at 74 degrees at 11:00 and some low 80s today. it's going to be much warmer than it has been. and if you're on your way to the train station about to go to diridon station in san jose, here's a look at the san jose temperature trend, upper 50s at 7:00 and at 10:00, 69 degrees. noon we're at 78 degrees and it does continue to go up from there as we head up towards 87 degrees in downtown san jose it's. 90s will be on the thermometer for the south county. mid-90s for antioch today and oakland -- expect a high of 78 degrees, even a little warmer

there. half moon bay stays cool at 64. and san mateo at 79. 73 in the mission district and the north bay up to 93 in novato. let's talk about this red flag warning because this weekend, no burning any fireworks, no grilling or even cutting the grass. that do spark a fire in the areas shaded in red. very low humidity and hot temperatures, you don't want to be out there doing that anyway. 100 degrees for the inland areas for tomorrow afternoon and 92 on sunday and fourth of july, temperatures coming down but it will still be very dry out there. and some cooler temperatures for san francisco with mid-60s. mike, we only have one cold spot for the commute. >> i don't even know if we have a commute. there's no metering lights on at the bay bridge. that is not the slow spot. behind me, look, everything else -- look at this commute. even for a friday this is light but we will see more traffic kicking in and also watching airports sharon is talking about. more folks getting out of town

olive oil might slow the progression of alzheimer's disease. a molecule which appears in extra virgin olive oil is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory tri. they tested it on mice with alzheimer's disease and the results were very positive. researchers say this is a big step but that it's important to note this is not a treatment. they say more like a preventative measure and something that could slow alzheimer's. the next step is to test the olive oil on people. >> 6:27, coming up here, we continue to monitor breaking news this the heart of the castro. a suspicious death near a popular nightclub. investigators we s were respondo before they found the victim. the new clue emerging as police try to find the driver to crashed into a petty cab and just took off. you're watching "today in the bay." heating up.

we )re tracking triple digit temperatures in p right now at 6:30, things are already starting to heat up. we're tracking triple digits temperatures, we're looking live at downtown san jose. not too far from the fountains at plaza day cesar chavez, where you might want to hang out for a while. laura garcia is off. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's go to meteorologist kari hall tracking warm temperatures we're going to get today and this weekend. >> it's going to be really hot this weekend. here's another look at san jose, starting out with clear skies and cool temperatures as you get

ready to head out the door. let's talk about what's ahead for the weekend. inland areas reaching the upper 80s and low 80s, antioch reaching the low 90s and north bay as well. san francisco, some mid-70s and look at this weekend as we get triple digits and some parts of the bay area reaching those valleys in the north bay as well over towards the delta, san jose reaching into the mid-90s, we'll talk about events going on this weekend and where you can go to stay cool. that's coming up in about seven minutes. mike has been tracking a couple of issues but not too bad on the road. >> not too bad over all but we're seeing a slower commute in the tri valley. after the earlier crash involving a motorcycle, watch for smaller vehicles that cleared from lanes. all lanes cleared south 680 and now the slowing coming into the area also clearing. on waze our partners there, we did hear about a possible pothole in the area that may have slowed things down but again, recovery.

a new crash i'm concerned south 880 towards baskem, reports of a cash that may be affecting lanes. haven't seen slowing over the last couple of minutes and light traffic in the area shown by speed sensors but i'll continue to follow that as well. the rest of the bay, an easy drive, look at the peninsula towards the east shore. we have no slowing except for a little dip in speeds for hayward and across the san mateo bridge. approaching the bay bridge, no problem for the maze and no metering lights on today right now. it's very light there. back to you. >> back to our breaking news, police there investigating a suspicious death in the heart of san francisco's castro. >> pete suratos is live at the scene this morning. pete, this is near a very popular nightclub at this point. does it seem like the two are related? >> good morning to you, chris and marcus, we don't know if it is related. it did happen across the street from the badlands nightclub behind me. the scene has since cleared but we know it's being treated as a

suspicious death at this point by san francisco police. but i want to show you new video, this happened in the past hour, we saw a car was being towed away, it's unclear what the connection is to the victim in all of this. but we know according to san francisco police at least what they are telling our crews that roughly around 1:00 a.m., they were responding to a fight or robbery in place near where we're standing on 18th and castro. when they arrived, they found a person in pretty bad shape and medical personnel tried to save him, they were not able to save him in that instance. at this point police do not know how it all happened. it's unclear what type of injuries this victim had as well. but it's being treated as a suspicious death. of course as we get more information, i'll make sure to update our viewers on my social media accounts, live in the castro district, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> an update on a story we're following for years. the family of this oakland teenager at the center of a controversial brain death case says she died last week.

doctors though say she has been dead since 2013. after she had her tonsils removed. the ruled the 13-year-old brain dead but the family did not want to accept that ruling and moved her to new jersey. her family says that jahi, five years older than when this all started passed away from excessive bleeding and liver failure following a new operation. her family tells us it has been a long fight to keep her on life support. she passed away surrounded in love and she passed away on her time and not on some doctor's time. >> this is what her mother says she told her daughter. she said if you're tired, girl and you're worn out from all of the struggle and want to be with god, i give you permission to go. jahi's family will bring her back to the bay area to lay her to rest. 6:34. let's look at this video. new surveillance video of the

driver who crashed into a petty cab in san francisco and then took off. police say that that petty cab was carrying a canadian family on wednesday when this happened. the family of four including two children were released from the hospital yesterday. the petty cab driver remains in the hospital. police release the pictures of the video of this gold four door honda that we're trying to track down. cyclists say this interest sks is a dangerous one. >> a maryland newsroom mourning the deaths of these five staffers killed when a gunman stormed their offices yesterday. even after the shooting the newspaper still released its morning paper and this is the cover. >> meantime, that investigation is only just beginning. here's what we know so far. a suspect is in custody this morning in connection with the shooting in amnnapolis maryland identified as jarrod ramos, it turns out he has some history with the paper. >> "today in the bay's" jennifer

johnson is live to explain what that connection might be. good morning, jennifer. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and kris. that's right, apparently jarrod davis had a longstanding feud with the capital gazette, published his name after being convicted of a har agencimeassme and threatening the newspaper by a social media for the past few years. he has been charged with five counts of murder and bail hearing here in annapolis in less than an hour. nbc news is reporting police are at the suspect's maryland home 38-year-old jarrod ramos. hours after he allegedly open fire inside a local annapolis newspaper. >> this person was prepared to shoot people, his intent was to cause harm. >> the suspect open fire with a long gun killing five. >> with a shotgun, black shirt, green pants.

>> terrified reporters tweeted begging for help. approximately 170 people were inside the building when he open fire. >> it's scary. very scary. i'm a little shaken up about everything. >> reporter: police aren't saying what the gunman's motivation is yet but say the capital gazette received threats via social media as late as thursday. >> they were our friends. we are grieving for these guys. >> reporter: police arrived within 60 seconds one week after training for this exact scenario. they later found smoke grenades allegedly left behind by the gunman. police have searched the suspect's laush elmaryland, home, 30 minutes away from here. we don't know what police found in that home. we're expecting a briefing later on today. this is still an active investigation. you might see behind me the police have cordoned off the area that is the parking lot of the capital gazette and might be able to see balloons in the background. people are dropping off flowers

northbound 101 a little bit of a build. this is a light commute right now. we're going here southbound 680 still shows a little slowing past burnell and the earlier scene of the crash still slowing there. i think there's still a crew distracting folks. continuing to improve for the tri-valley. we're looking at dublin, 580 out of livermore. livermore near the scales, the new crash out of lanes but i'll track that. look at this, mass transit, new delays and talking about the changes for caltrain and no days for any of the -- >> might stay on past my stop. >> would come in handy this weekend. >> we've been talking about it all week long, it's here, starts today. as we get ready for our weekend, we're making plans. if it's a longer weekend for you, make sure you're planning around the weather. it's going to be dangerous heat for the inland areas. up to 100 degrees. the bay reaching the mid-80s and the coast around 80 degrees. and on sunday, temperatures

start to come down a bit, a little bit cooler for the coast. low 70s and 82 degrees for the bay and inland valleys s up to degrees, if you make plans, make you'll kick it off at music on the square in redwood city. for that we have really nice temperatures, mid-70s and breezy winds and sunshine and you'll be able to enjoy comfortable weather this evening. going to the solano county fair in vallejo, it's going to be hot for the middle of the day but a nice event to check out maybe get on those rides that will give you a little bit more of a breeze and it cools down with mid-70s by 9:00. and for san francisco, the phil more jazz festival happening and it's going to be quite warm out there during the middle of the day with that sun beaming down. drink plenty of water and make sure you stay hydrated no matter where you are around the bay area. if you're going to heavenly, low 80s for the weekend. it's going to be quite warm as you get ready to set up on the

are blocked. >> looking live at some of those long lines at sjc, people started lining up for flights around 4:00 a.m. the tsa expects its busiest day ever today about 2.6 million people. the big reason, it's summer. and fourth of july is next week. many people are just taking an extended break. the tsa says that this should arrive at least 90 minutes before your flight and there's a new focus on powders, not just liquid, so be prepared for that. >> great news you should hear about the fire burning in lake county. doesn't look quite like this anymore. firefighters say the pawnee fire is no longer growing and mandatory evacuations for double eagle community are over. the fire is 50% contained. but it did char more than 13,000 acres and destroyed 22 structures including several homes. now, some families in san mateo county have a big dilemma, the
