nbc's blake mccoy is at new york central park. blake, how hot is it right now? >> well, craig, it's not too bad yet, but it's going to get very, very hot. moving in from the midwest where they've been dealing with sweltering heat. it could stick around for several days, becoming a full-blown heatwave. this holiday weekend, extreme heat is spreading across the country. fueling explosive wildfires in the west and brutally hot temperatures from the midwest to the northeast. >> i feel like it's 100 degrees out here. >> it's, like, really hot. it's really, really hot. >> reporter: this morning, more than 120 million americans are under heat warnings, watches or advisories. the temperatures creeping towards triple digits. add a blow torch and asphalt and these workers in kansas city may have the worst job in america right now. >> sometimes we do parking lots and striping over new asphalt, it feels like it's 30 times hotter.

>> reporter: even playgrounds can be dangerous. this woman's daughter suffered second-degree burns on a slide a few weeks ago. now she's keeping a close watch. >> it completely took her skin away. >> reporter: hey humidity in the midwest is adding to the misery, increasing the risk of heatstroke. >> even the breeze doesn't help very much. >> reporter: in minneapolis, the feels like temperature, nearly 110 degrees. in new york and new jersey, cooling centers and public pools will be open through the weekend. >> make sure you stay in the water. stay off the deck. stay directly out of the sun. always try to find a cool area to stand in. >> reporter: the sweltering temperatures come at the start of one of the busiest travel weekends on record. aaa says 47 million americans are planning to travel, up nearly 5% from last year. hopefully traveling somewhere cooler. >> this is a bit hotter than i was expecting. >> reporter: here in central park, we've seen a lot of people out early today trying to beat the heat. it is going to get very hot.

doctors say watch for signs of heat exhaustion, redding of the face, people overly sweating, elevated heart rate. if you see that, get people to shade very quickly and get them water. it's going to be very hot for several days. >> blake, thank you. >> dylan is keeping a close eye on this one. dylan, how hot is it going to get? >> it's going to get exceptionally hot and last for a very long time. that's the key here. 125 million people are under some type of heat advisory, heat watch and heat warning. it's ex-attempting through the great lakes to the northeast. 240 million people, it will feel like it's over 90 degrees for, for 88 million people today, it will feel like it's more than 100 degrees. when your body sweats, that evaporates away and that's your body's natural cooling mechanism, but when there is so much humidity in the air, it doesn't evaporate away as quickly so your whole body doesn't cool down as it normally would. that's why it feels so ever

uncomfortable when you factor in that humidity. by the time we get into sunday, 225 million people will feel like it's above 90 degrees. for 95 million people, it will feel like it's above 100 degrees. we will start to see some relief for some areas, especially across the northeast as we go no monday. breaking down the temperatures, people like 100 and 110 by tomorrow. in the northeast, temperatures will feel like it's 107 no place new york city on sunday. on monday, while it will cool down a bit in the northeast, washington, d.c. will stay just as hot with your heat index value up around 105 degrees. so it is very, very hot, guys. >> dylan, thank you. much more to get to this morning, including the outpouring of support in nap us in, maryland, two days after the deadly shooting at the "capital gazette" news office. on friday night, hundreds came together to remember the five victims killed when that gunman

"capital gazette" ed toward gerald fishman remembered as a mentor and a loyal friend. >> he was part of my family. i only had seven people at my wedding and he was one of them. >> reporter: wendy winters, a community reporter who often volunteered in her neighborhood leaves three daughters behind. >> i miss her very much. this is a senseless tragedy and i have to live life now without

my mother. >> reporter: as the small town greens, more horrific details of thursday's game come to light. suspected gunman jarrod ramos first barricaded the back door so people could not escape then entered the newsroom with a shotgun and opened fire. police say ramos, who has not been cooperating with investigators, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder. president trump offering his condolences friday. >> journalists, like all americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job. >> reporter: maria hiaasen lost her husband rob and assistant editor at the paper fondly remembered for being a kind leader and a talented feature writer. for maria -- >> i've lost my best friend. he was famous for saying that to people. about our relationship. we're best friends.

candidates. >> that's a big one. probably not. they're all saying don't do that. you shouldn't do that, but i'm putting conservative people on. >> reporter: judging a caller's true identity got by white house officials. aboard air force one friday night, the president was panicked by radio personality john melendez, a former howard stern sidekick. >> hi, bob. >> reporter: the president apparently thought he was talking to new jersey democratic senator bob menendez. the phony caller even asked about immigration. >> they've got to have security at the border, and that's a good issue for the democrats, too, bob. it's not like it's good for you or good for me, it's good for both of us. >> reporter: the authentic senator menendez used the joke to make a statement, saying, i welcome any opportunity to have a real conversation with the president on how to uphold american values. nbc was unable to independently confirm that prank call, which

was published on the comedian's podcast. we tried several times, asking the white house, and notably they made no attempt to deny that's the president's voice. chanel? craig? >> this goes way beyond a prank phone call to the president. people nationwide are planning to protest the president's zero tolerance policy. >> reporter: chanel, we expect according to organizers as many as 50,000 demonstrators in washington. they'll be outside the white house marching to the department of justice. they encourage them to wear white so they will stand out on this incredible and hot weekend. also lin-manuel miranda, the founder and creator of "hamilton" will be among the protesters there. extended to several cities around the country, large and small, trying to urge the trump administration to work on reunification and protest their immigration policy. chanel? >> kelly, thank you. >> steve kornacki is an nbc news national political correspondent. always good to see you, buddy.

these protests, immigration protests, thousands of folks expected to hit the streets to protest the president's zero tolerance policy. what's it likely this is an issue that carries into the fall and -- >> energy there on the left. energy among the president's critics, something that certainly could add to that heading into the fall. the flip side is i think the polling on this is a little bit more complicated sometimes than we realize. the family separation aspect of this has dominated the news for the last few weeks is deeply unpopular. that goes across party lines. that's something certainly that works against republicans, but the underlying so-called zero tolerance policy, this idea of, hey, if you've got folks crossing the border illegally, do you prosecute them, do you detain and prosecute them or do you release them in the united states and do something later on? that detainment option, children with families, the single most popular option for both parties, democrats and republicans. that might change as the politics evolve but i think the

guts of the country are more conflicted than we realize. >> let's talk about trump supreme court nominee. if seems like replacing justice kennedy has the potential to move the court to the far-right. let's talk about the senators on both sides of the aisle. who should we be watching. >> i think the ball game is lisa murkowski, republican from alaska, susan collins, republican from maine. the bottom line is even if democrats lined everybody on their side up, that includes red state democrats, trump state democrats like joe manchin and john tester. even if they line them up, they have 49. there is no filibuster on this anymore. they need republican help. if they're going to get republican help, theoretically the only two out there i see right now are collins and murkowski, specifically the issue of roe v. wade. these are pro-choice republican senators. a potential swing vote. i'd keep un eye on them. >> any chance they delay the vote at all? democrats calling on mcconnell to push this thing back to after the midterms. >> i've seen no evidence.

if the republicans want to do it, they will do it. >> steve adding author to his resume. his new book "the red and the blue" out this fall. >> congratulations. >> thank you. a search for a dozen soccer players and their coach in thailand is entering a second week. the boys disappeared last saturday, exploring the cave after a soccer game. heavy rains have flooded the cavern but there is still hope that the boys are still alive. lucy cavanaugh has the details nsa that frantic search is picking up pace. rescue teams are using divers, dogs, thermal drones with cameras to find a new entrance to that flooded cave. this is a 6-mile-long location and pinpointing the boy's location is tough. this morning, a race against the clock as the search for the missing thai soccer team enters its seventh day. the mission complicated by heavy rains and mud, making the underground passageways

virtually impassable. thai authorities are trying to pump out the water, but with torrential rains pouring down, the cave keeps filling up. above ground, the teams are trekking through the deep jungle, searching for another entry point inside. so far, no sign of the 12 boys and their coach but police have been sending these survival packages containing food, phones and maps in hopes of making contact. anguished parents waited for word as the thai prime minister on friday visited the site, comforting families, rallying the troops. we will succeed, he said, because we have faith. people trapped underground have defied the odds before. in 1999, a group of men survived ten days stuck in a cave in conference. the rescue of 33 -- leaving

their bikes, bags and cleats at the entrance of the cave. this american rescue team from the u.s. pacific command is on the ground helping with the search. >> the floor and the ceiling this tall, 20 meters, and the area of the room is 20 meters. >> reporter: as families on the scene keep the faith, praying for their sons. >> lucy, we're entering day seven of the search for the soccer team. what do experts say about this chances to survive this? >> well, experts say that survival is possible. the cave is warm enough inside that hypothermia shouldn't be an issue. they might be out of food by now but there is plenty of water given the flood, which means they can keep going for a month. >> oh, wow. >> this has been a frustrating and difficult search but rescuers are not giving up. >> good to hear the positive news there. lucy thank you. >> dylan is back with the rest of the and we are under a regional

but miraculously and with the help of some good samaritans, their 17-year-old son managed to walk out alive. a close call in michigan when a hot air balloon crashed into power lines and caught fire before landing in a lake. two fishermen helped bring the uninjured pilot back to shore. and a scary lightning strike had this officer scrambling for safety as severe storms roll through florida. an incredible win for argentina at the world cup. after the 86 minute goal against nigeria scored them a spot. the 2-1 goal sending the crowd wild. normally rivals termed up to have a little fun after the president mocked them at a campaign appearance. >> hey, low life. >> hey, lost soul.

low humidity, that red flag warning is expected to remain in place through today and tomorrow. we're also tracking very high heat. currently we're already in the 50s and 60s, so fairly mild in san jose at 62. and san francisco 62 degrees. but as we tread into the afternoon, we will see fast warming into the triple digits. we're talking 100 plus degrees for inland areas. i'll go more into detail of course. >> going to be hot. thanks. well, hundreds of east bay residents are back in their homes this morning after a fast moving fire came dangerously close to their homes. fire ycrews battled it in cord. it is now 80% contained. firefighters were able to save hundreds of homes. two firefighters were injured but expected to be okay. two subdivisions were forced to

at the famed karolyi ranch used by usa gymnastics. what about the karolyis themselves? nbc stephanie gosk has more on all of it. >> reporter: former gymnastics doctor and convicted six abuser larry nassar is already spending the rest of his life in prison, but this morning he faces new criminal charges. >> it's the right thing to do because these victims deserve to be heard because they deserve justice. >> reporter: texas prosecutors are charging nassar with six counts of sexual assault of a child. the crimes allegedly taking place at the karolyi ranch, used as a training center for usa gymnastics and run by acclaimed coaches bela and marta karolyi. the couple said they first learned the of the abuse allegations when media reports surfaced in 2016. this morning, law enforcement officials say there is no evidence the karolyis committed any crime, leaving some of nassar's accusers frustrated. >> in my heart, i don't believe

that the karolyis should just go on their merry way and be able to retire. >> the d.a. did announce a single charge of sexual assault against nassar's training assistant debbie van horn. gymnast maddie larson said van horn was actually in the exam room when nassar abused her. >> if a trainer, a professional trainer doesn't say anything about it, i should trust her. at least that's what i thought. >> reporter: usa gymnastics fired nassar in 2015 and say they reported his to the fbi soon after learning about the accusations. debbie van horn is no longer employed by the organization. nbc news reached out to attorneys for glass? van horn and did not receive a response. in a statement usa jaegymnastic says it supports and fully cooperating with the investigations and continues to do so. texas authorities had some harsh words for usag. >> it is our belief that it is a total failure by usag to protect

the athletes that were part of their program. >> reporter: the d.a. adding that the investigation is still open. for "today," stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york. dylan to standing by with another check of the whether weather. what are we looking out? >> the big story is the heat and humanity, but we're going to see some showers and thunderstorms. some of these storms could be severe throughout the day. not a whole lot of activitity, thunderstorms north of north platte. we are going to see through iowa today, a chants for damaging winds, larger hail. we can't rule out a tornado either. 15 million are at risk for some sort of strong storm today. as we go into sunday, we'll lose the significant threat of very strong storms. parts of eastern wisconsin we could see some damaging winds along with those strong storms as well. the timing of is as this front moves eastward, we'll start to see them fire up this afternoon into this evening. then tomorrow, slowly slides to the east with the area of low

faces. good morning. welcome back to "today" on this saturday morning. >> we're going to get outside in just a bit and hang out with the folks on the plaza. >> a lot to get to this hour. we begin with the sweltering heat gripping a huge portion of this country. dylan is tracking it all for us this morning. dylan? >> hey, guys. dangerous heat is affecting people all across the country. out west, wildfires are burning. in colorado, thousands of people have been evacuated. heat and dry conditions helping to fuel those flames. meanwhile back east in pennsylvania, it was so hot on friday the road buckled. cars had to drive on the shoulder to avoid getting stuck in it and the heat is going to stick around for a long time. so today we already have 127 million people under some sort of heat advisory, heat watch or heat warning. you can see how expansive it is from the midwest to the great lakes all the way up oh into the northeast, even north carolina seeing some of that heat this morning. as we go through the day, it's not just the warm temperatures, it's the humidity. it really affects how quickly your body can cool down.

this as hundreds of friends and family members turn out overnight for a vigil for the five victims. nbc's katie beck is standing by for us there in annapolis. katie, i was there with you yesterday and found out that annapolis is also your hometown. your parents still live there. how is your community coping this morning? >> reporter: a lot of people grieving, craig, as these five committed colleagues will be deeply missed in this community, but as this morning continues, police are shedding more light on exactly what happened inside that newsroom. they tell us that prior to this attack, the gunman actually barricaded the door so that employees could not escape. they are also ciaing thsaying h 12 gauge shotgun that he purchased about a year ago legally to commit this crime. while she not cooperating with police at this time, they do believe his intent that day was to kill as many people as possible. those are hard words for a community that is still absorbing the shock of this

unfortunately we're still dealing with very low humidity and temperatures are expected to climb into the 100 mark, upwards of 100, 104 as we head into the afternoon. so we have to keep a close eye on that. i'll monitor the winds all day. and right now current temperatures, fairly mild in the 50s and 60s to start. in the south bay, 61. i'll bring you the rest of your day time highs and who won't see the triple digits coming up at 7:00. >> that is good, who won't see the triple digits. all right. thanks. hundreds of east bay residents where back in their homes this morning after a fast moving fire came dangerously close to their neighborhood. contra costa county fire crews battled a fast moving grass fire in concord. it is now 85% contained. firefighters were able to save hundreds of homes. two firefighters we're told were injured, they are expected to be okay. two subdivisions had to be evacuated.
