out there. you have to do it. >> we really need it. much of the nation is in the midst of a dangerous heat wave this morning as the fourth of july holiday approaches. temperatures in the triple digits in areas of the midwest and northeast united states. it is prompting heat warnings and advisories for millions of americans. many heading to the water to beat the heat. >> it wasn't just people that needed to cool off. chicago, for instance, had to hose down one of the city's movable bridges. officials say the extreme heat makes the steel expand, making it impossible to raise and close the bridge to letrly in new yor the clock and trying to beat the heat. >> it's not an easy run in the heat, just brutal today. >> reporter: the temperature, 96 degrees. the hottest it's been this year. in n eedxcessi after succumbed to the heat at three minnesota twins players saturday's matchup against the cubs. >> and he's not indicating any

these temperatures will persist through the fourth july. to qualify as a heat wave the temperature has to be at or above 90 degrees three days in a row, something that's already happened in chicago, philadelphia, boston, and here in central park, it will become an official heat wave as well. we turn to shocking violence that roiled the capital city, a little girl's boise, leaving six kids with what officials describe as life-altering injuries. officials say the man was targeting refugee children and their families. boise mayor dave beater tweeted that horrific attack doesesen n most victims in a single incident in the city's history. the attack was so awful it had the police chief in tears. nbc'investigation now under way.

>> advise medics there's some child victims. >> reporter: horrific. the scene at this apartment complex saturday night in boise after a man stabbed nine people, six of them children. >> looking at the street, it almost looks like a movie set. it doesn't look real. >> reporter: authorities arrested 30-year-old timmy earl kenner, charged with multiple felonies. police say he had an extensive criminal record. according to police he'd been staying at the apartments with an acquaintance but was asked to leave. he came back saturday night looking for revenge. the person he had been staying with was gone, but police say he found other targets. >> 3-year-old girl whose birthday iwa one of those seriously injured. including two 4-year-olds, a 6-year-olds, three adults who tried to intercede to prevent the loss of lives of the children. >> reporter: 12-year-old esram ho words.

we're just a little over a week from president trump's major announcement, formally nominating his second supreme court nominee. meeting his own deadline as he looks to spend the summer pushing both democrat and i can republican lawmakers to approve his pick before the midterm elections. what else can we expect from the commander in chief this week? fsn's kelly o'donnell has that from washington. >> reporter: good morning, frances. fireworks expected this week. in the sky and in the political space. president trump will of course be celebrating independence day and there will be some events where he honors military families and military service. he's also facing a deadline that he set just a week now until he announces publicly his choice for a second spot on the supreme court. there are many political
