"early today" starts right now. good monday morning. i'm frances rivera. >> i'm richard lui. much of the nation is in the midst of a brutal heat wave this morning. just as the july fourth holiday approaches. temp terse approaching triple digits in areas of the midwest and northeast united states. prompting heat warnings and advisories for millions. the heat causing dangerous conditions for athletes in chicago, for instance. three minnesota begins players succumbing to the heat at saturday's matchup against the cubs. and at this weekend's nascar event the thermometer in one car reading 108. >> and away from the sports fields many people headed for the water to beat the heat, lake, beach, or even a sprinkler. it wasn't just people that needed to cool off. in chicago they had to hose down one of the city's movable bridges. officials say the extreme heat makes the steel expand, making it impossible to raise and close the bridge to let boats pass

through. hollywood just got a little bigger. they had to make a lot of room for another big star. lebron james will be taking his talents to the west coast to join the los angeles lakers after heavy speculation during the season. the announcement finally came on twitter through his agency, clutch sports group. king james, as they love to call him, chose the lakers over some fierce competitors, including the houston rockets, philadelphia 76ers, and his hometown cavaliers. but he ultimately decided to ink a four-year contract worth, oh, about $154 million to play for l.a. following that announcement, cavs chairman dan gilbert put out a statement thanking lebron for every moment he has spent in a cavaliers uniform. news of the king's decision spread through social media like wildfire. immediately becoming a trending topic within the first couple of minutes. celebrities like snoop dogg, ice cube, kobe bryant all welcoming james to the west coast. he even received a special message from the former governor of california, arnold

people familiar with the process say president trump indicated one kind of preference already, that he'd like to choose a nominee who attended harvard or yale. what is north korea hiding? that's what some are asking this morning after nbc news first reported pyongyang has increased its production of fuel for its nukes at multiple secret sites. this after that historic summit between president trump and kim jong-un, leading the president to claim there was no long area nuclear threat from north korea at the time. well, this morning both "the washington post" and "wall street journal" are confirming nbc's report with the "journal's" editorial board telling the president he must call out kim or he will "keep getting away with it." report.hat national security >> we've seen how the north koreans have behaved before. theht oing to make the administrations. we're going to pursue this, and
