alive after they were lost in a flooded cave, the effort to get them back to safety. today in the bay continues right now. thanks for joining us. >> we are taking a look at three of the micro climates right now. as we look at three more in the north bay we have concerns of patchy fog and drifts of smoke for today because of wild fires farther to the north. highs today low 80s inland. we are taking a break from the extreme heat. we'll talk about the 4th of july forecast. we have an update on the crash.

>> i told you i would check it. it is effecting 880. i should show everybody this. a little bit of a slow on the sensors. 101 in san jose. the first thing we talk about in the east bay south 880 is the report of the crash off the shoulder. no slowing shows up. >> no delays on the metering side. there was a crash on a busy freeway. police closed lanes of highway 101 after they found a person

who had been shot inside a car. >> today we were at the scene when we came on the air at 4:30 this morning. you have information on what was a very bizarre road closure. >> reporter: yes. we did speak with the sergeant from the chp within the last hour. they are trying to figure out if the driver was shot while he was driving on northbound 101 or if he was shot somewhere else, was trying to drive himself to the hospital and then he stopped. they found him in his car in the middle of northbound highway 101. he was unresponsive. it is not where he passed out and was able to -- his car stopped rolling or stopped by something but he was found in his car taken to the hospital. his condition is unknown. now, chp did issue a sig alert. they shut down all lanes for four hours overnight so they

could look for bullet casings to see if he was shot somewhere on the freeway. it's not clear if they found anything. they are trying to determine where this man was shot. last night crews evacuated more people from their homes. >> stayed up last night. >> it's a little scary. >> so far no one has been hurt. no buildings are burned. it is going pretty unchecked. we'll check in with him in the next half hour.

as this continues to burn air quality is a concern. people are posting pictures like this after ash falling on cars and the yellow skies. this is from berkeley. >> we have been talking about why this smoke has been trapped and when we might see some relief. >> it has been drifts of smoke coming by. winds have been light and variable. as we look at our wind speed forecast for the morning we are going to see those winds starting to turn from the west and that's going to blow the smoke over towards the central valley before a brief period this morning. we could see that smoke coming into parts of the bay area. it has been trapped in the low layers of the clouds and fog. today moderate air quality.

we'll continue to have more updates throughout the area. >> it is 6:04 now. an amazing story where recuers found that boys soccer team ten days ago. everybody fearing the worst. the moment they were found by rescuers. one of the lead rescuers pulled over on the side of the road to talk with the today show. he says they are trying to figure out how they will get those boys out of the cave. these would be to keep it out of the cave. but time is not on their side.

>> the family members, they are ecstatic. any rescues could be weeks and maybe even months away. time is not on their side. there is always the danger that new rains could lead to rising water. the white house insists it's making progress after last month's summit north korea is secretly increasing the nuclear arsenal. this is after president trump said there was no longer a nuclear threat. this week secretary of state goes back to north korea to continue nuclear negotiations. the administration says it is going well. >> you haven't seen missile launches. you haven't seen nuclear detonations. >> the other big headline is who is the president going to pick for the supreme court? the president said he interviewed four people so far. he calls them all incredible.

their coach were found alive inside the cave after more than a week. the big challenge now is trying to get them out. rescuers are looking at every possible option, teaching the boys how to swim, teaching them basic diving techniques and looking at drilling new entries into the cave. they are sending in food, water and minute sedicine to keep the stable. it could be weeks or months before they could do this safely. we'll have the latest coming up later on the today show. back to you. all right. you can expect much more on this story on the today show at 7:00

right after today in the bay including a brand new interview with a man who helped define those missing boys. we have continuing coverage. here is where we stand at this hour. so far 60,000 acres have burned. it is only 5% contained. no buildings have burned yet. mandatory evacuations are in place for communities near flames. >> the fire broke out sunday afternoon. you can see the exact burns here on your screen. it is the area in red. today pete is live this morning with the progress that firefighters are making. a lot of activity behind you this morning. it is hard for them to do things in the dark.

were evacuated. the fire is fully contained. everyone is back at home this morning but firefighters are just making sure. 6:36 he will get a nine year sentence. both men face involuntary manslaughter. one died in the fire in 2016. the plea agreements mean the case will not go to trial. all new this morning we are hearing from the family of a man the fbi says plotted a terror attack in ohio and also talked about visiting san francisco as part of his overall plan. deputies say he was going to attack tomorrow's 4th of july parade in cleveland. he declared allegiance. >> he has never ban violent

highway 101. right now they are not sure whether that man was shot while he was on the freeway or shot somewhere else and ended up on the freeway as he was trying to drive himself to the hospital or somewhere else. they tell us at last check the victim was in critical condition and not doing well. there may be new oversite for the agency looking the clear out the homeless camps. they will consider creating a special sub committee that would oversee the operation center. they say board members raised concerns about interaction between police and the home ples during some of those sweeps. effecting your vote the city of santa claire are was order today split up the city. today the city will hold the first public meeting on what those districts should look like. tonight's meeting at can have6: the city council chambers.

new information just into our newsroom on the )county fire ) burning in yolo and napa counties... within the last 15 minutes-- we learned the fire grew to 70- thousand acres overnight. welcome back. within the last 15 minutes pete learned that the fire grew to 70,000 acres overnight. that is up from 60,000 acres.
