up, sometimes literally. 's international wife carrying competition. "early today" starts rightmorni. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. it's a moment many feared would never come. after 16 days, the first four members of the a youth soccer team trapped in a cave are finally out. the boys were brought to safety after an hour's long journey clinging on to ropes and navigating through narrow flooded passage ways. they were helped by 13 foreign cave divers and five navy s.e.a.l.s. the four boys have reportedly not been reunited with their families yet, but we are hearing from the aunt of one of them who says she is finally able to smile. >> translato >> the four boys are now being

treated and assessed nearby hospital. we have more from the ground. >> reporter: four boys, starved and exhausted, are now safe. the entire eighth floor reserved to care exclusively for the teens. hospital officials won't say how they're doing, but the condition of one of the first two to come out is said to be causing concern. pictures show one of the boys on a stretcher after the incredible rescue. these four went first because they were deemed the healthiest. the commander says they're ready for this. they're ready to come out. just days ago the boys had sent letters to their families about what they wanted when they were freed. favorite foods like pork barbecue and fried chicken. one boy joked, teacher, don't give us lots of homework. another wrote, i miss everyone. i want to go back now. thirteen full medical teams have been doing evacuation drills for

days. they first check for breathing and signs of hypothermia before they're sent by air lift and ambulance to begin their journey home. a medical doctor was inside the cave today to examine the boys before the mission to make sure they were up for it. the same thing will happen in the next phase to determine who will be next to go out. frances? >> janice, thank you. the rescue operation for the remaining eight boys ages 11 to 16 and their 25-year-old coach suspended for over ten hours as rescue teams scrambled to replenish the supply of oxygen tanks along the escape route. divers are racing against time as more monsoonal rains threaten the already high risk us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. thailand's interior minister says the boys are strong and safe but they need to undergo
4:04 am
detailed medical checks. as you just said, it seems the rescue operations have resumed in the rescue mission which is very complex. they've had to restock air tanks along the route and other supplies as well. extra masks, wet suits, blankets. all scenarios have been planned for. there's a lot of preparation. thailand's interior minister also saying that the same divers that took part in the operation to bring out four members of that soccer team will also conduct the next operation since they've already been through one and they know the cave conditions well. one of the support divers from that mission telling nbc news that from the first part of the rescue the kids were totally calm, which was one of the initial concerns when they first discussed bringing them out with scuba equipment. they decided toe seam out on th dangerous journey. their total time in the water is about 2 1/2 hours even though most of that's not when they are totally submerged, but they keep

president trump is teasing tonight's historic announcement. in fact, here's what the president had to say on his way back from new jersey. >> i'm very close to making a decision. have not made it official yet obviously. have not made it final, but we're very close to making a decision. let's say it's the four people, but they're excellent. every one. i'm getting close to making a final decision. i'll probably be decided tonight or tomorrow sometime by 12:00. i think we're all going to be meeting at 9:00 and we have a great country, folks. we have a great country. >> nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on the president's pick and the impact he or she could have. >> frances, this will easily be the biggest change. last year's nomination of kneel gorsuch brought in a conservative. that was a conservative replacing a conservative.
4:07 am
any nominee that president trump now chooses is certain to be more conservative because kennedy sometimes voted with the li it's a long shot that the court would overturn roe v. wade, but it may be more likely to uphold state laws that make abortion harder to get, laws that justice kennedy joined with the liberals in striking down. the court is probably not likely to go back to banning gay marriage, but it may approve of businesses that cite religious objections and refusing to serve gay customers and the court could be more willing to uphold restrictions on voting and affirmative action and school admission. it's also possible the supreme court will start taking up more cases on firearms rights, the second amendment, such as having a gun outside the home, that's an issue the court has consistently avoided for the past ten years. frances? >> pete williams for us. pete, thanks. be sure to join us tonight for nbc news live coverage of president trump's supreme court nomination. that's at 9:00 p.m. eastern,
