a summit aimed at strengthening ties, but president trump already throwing punches, raising questions whether the united states is committed to standing with its closest allies. pomp and pageantry at the nato summit, with president trump side-by-side with european leaders sharing a close conversation with british prime minister theresa may. followed by a dramatic flyover. earlier, taking part in a breakfast with nato's secretary-general before the summit officially started. >> many countries are not paying what they should. >> reporter: mr. trump doubling down on his criticism that several nato countries don't pay their fair share in defense, but taking direct aim at germany, accusing the country of paying too little, and of being controlled by russia. >> germany is a captive of russia.

they got rid of their coal plants and nuclear. getting so much of the oil and gas from russia. >> reporter: and pushing back when publically pressed by the nato secretary-general. >> we are stronger together than apart. >> but how can you be together when a country is getting its energy from the person you want protection against or from the group that you want protection against? >> and you have to understand when we stand together, also, in dealing with russia, we are stronger. >> you're just making russia richer. >> reporter: a remarkable start to a summit that's already been rattled by the president's tough talk. on tuesday, the european council president warned mr. trump. >> the mesh, your allies, after all, you don't have that many. >> reporter: the president on a week-long four-country trip of europe. on his agenda, a stop in britain, where prime minister theresa may face as government in crisis over brexit. then an audience with queen elizabeth. next to scotland for a visit to

one of his golf properties and finally, a face-to-face with russian president vladimir putin. mr. trump raising eyebrows by striking this conciliatory tone towards putin. >> frankly, putin may be the easiest of them all. who would think? >> reporter: senior administration officials insist in that one-on-one meeting, mr. trump will confront president putin over thorny issues likely including interference in the election and russia's 2014 invasion of crimea, but democrats say they're skeptical. >> it's even worse for him to meet with a very, very clever, out for himself man like president putin alone. >> reporter: and one top republican senator is issuing this stern warning -- >> i think what would be really disastrous would be for us to have a negative nato meeting, and then do something with putin that further destabilizes the relationship. >> reporter: president trump met

with the german chancellor just moments ago after chancellor merkel told reporters she's prepared for controversial discussions. still, the president's public rebuke of merkel is just striking. these summits are aimed at optics and tone and so far president trump controversial on both fronts. he could weaken the alliance strengthening the hand of president putin heading into next week. >> people watching the body language of the putin summit in preparing for sure. thank you very much. now to the latest on that miracle rescue in thailand this morning. the 12 boys and their coach are recovering from their 18-day ordeal as we learn more about the dangerous operation to save them. in a moment, we'll talk to two american whose took part in that. but first, nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is at the scene. hi, bill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. it was dangerous, and it was daring, but it could have ended

in disaster. divers describing this morning how the main cave complex began flooding during the very final rescue, and it has now been abandoned. in the last hour, extraordinary new images of one boy being rescued from inside the cave and 12 boys relaxing inside the hospital. the wild boar soccer team reunited again. some parents crying, watching behind windows. others allowed in the same room but wearing surgical gloves and gowns in case of infection. this is how their sons were saved on a green plastic gurney, a boy is hauled up from the murky water. difbers and doctors surrounding him as the gurney slides to the exit. his arm is hanging out, face barely visible. eyes closed, his freedom assured. [ cheers ]

celebration here and jubilation at a rescue that defied the odds. but it still nearly went wrong. just after the last boy was taken out the main water pumped failed flooding the cave so quickly, divers streamed and sprinted for the exit. these, the last four to leave and they left exhausted. the divers had risked their lives and were overcome with emotion. celebrating with a beer. >> we feel very happy. now we need beer and we sleep. >> have a good day. >> a good day. >> a very good day. >> reporter: their bodies cut, cave mud everywhere. >> it was a tough dive. a tough couple of weeks, yes. >> reporter: happy? >> happy. >> reporter: this was the only glimpse of the end of the boys' nightmare on a gurney, saline drips attached. another boy identified only at number 11 followed. the daylight so bright, their faces were covered with blue

cloth. the rescue commander cheered by the world's media. we've finished, he said what no one ever thought we'd achieve. at the hospital, more celebrations. inside, the boys' reunited, and well. doctors say they've lost four pounds. it took eight days from discovery to freedom. >> brilliant! >> reporter: that moment, the trigger for a rescue few believed possible. drilling and digging, waiting and battling. they had luck. the rains held off. they had lost. one thai diver losing his life. the boys drank water from cave walls. they were weaken in body but strong in spirit and so brave. diving for hours to escape. a heroic end to a story that has inspired the world. amazing things on mission

accomplished. back to you guys. >> good. otherwise an international incident, otherwise. >> it would. >> bill, thank you. joined now by two members of the u.s. air force who were involved in that rescue. major charles hodgins was one of the mission commanders and master sergeant derek anderson was actually inside the cave during the operation. good morning, gentlemen. i'm going to start with sergeant anderson. take us inside that cave, sergeant anderson, the conditions what it was like and what it felt like when you finally saw the first boys coming out. >> i mean, i think an issue we thought it wasn't going to be accomplished for long and actually getting in and seeing some obstacles, real tight points and add on top of that the really cold waters with zero visibility, quickly we realized it would be a much more complex mission than we originally thought. >> major hodgins, do i have this right? at the very last moment there

was a complication with the oxygen. so, really, not only were you against time, it turned out those boys were rescued just in the nick of time? >> yeah. we knew that the oxygen levels in the ninth chamber were slowly but surely going down. we knew that the sustainment, course of action, that was a potential option was no longer an option, because we knew they couldn't be in there for four, five months as we thought originally. we knew that if we didn't act when we acted, then there was not going to be a successful rescue. we knew if we acted soon, we had the potential to rescue them, but didn't have the option to wait. >> and major hodgins, we can't overstate how difficult and dangerous it is. a former thai navy s.e.a.l. died down there. describe what you thought the odds were initially. >> so as we look at missions like this, we put them out on a

risk matrix and this one, due to the extreme physical hazards, due to the fatigue hazards, due to the factors if any equipment breaks down, that's life-saving equipment and could have catastrophic results if that equipment doesn't hold up. when you look at that on a risk matrix, it comes out as being extremely high risk level. and when you look at -- historically, anyone ever doing this, there's no precedent that's been set. we looked at this and thought, this has a very low probability of success. and i felt like i was being optimistic when i told the governor of chiang rai when he asked, in my mind, the potential chance of success was anywhere from 60% to 70%. we were fully expecting casualties. the multi-national effort, though, actually absolutely knocked it out of the park. everybody came together on this, and if there wasn't teamwork coming from every single direction, this would not have

been a success. >> and my final question to you, sargent anderson. you were in there. what does it mean to be a part of this incredible humanitarian effort, so much courage shown from different countries, all rallying around this cause of 13 young boys? >> i mean, i think that, you know, we can all be proud. it's, like the major said, every bit of effort from every part of the world. those boys are heroes. they were extremely brave to go through something like this. i'm really glad that everybody's going to have a day to walk away from this with a smile including the rescuers and the boys. >> thank you so much and congratulations on all your hard work. >> thank you for your service. >> thank you. >> thanks. we move now to breaking news in wisconsin. we mentioned this at the top of the show. a deadly gas main explosion rocking downtown sun prairie overnight.

nbc's ron mott is there with the latest. good morning to you. what a scene. >> reporter: what a scene indeed. savannah, good morning. we're at a staging area about a mile and a half away from the blast. you can see the red cross on the scene as well. meantime sadly we've learned at least one firefighter has been killed. this morning, a community rattled after an overnight gas line explosion in a small wisconsin suburb killing one firefighter. >> a gas leak. had a building explosion. >> reporter: authorities say contractors were working in downtown sun prairie about 16 miles northeast of madison when they struck a natural gas line. witnesses reported smelling gas not long before the powerful blast, sparking massive flames and sending six plumes of spoke into the air. the explosion leveling at least one building, damaging several others. causing evacuations of businesses and homes within a half mile radius. police say while teams perform a search of the fiery rubble, there's no timetable yet for when people will be allowed back into the evacuation zone.

>> soon as we can get the fire department get in there and get that ventilation, get the gas completely ventilated, get those fires out we can start making a determination when we can allow people back in their homes. >> reporter: officials confirming this morning several firefighters were transported to the hospital. >> six firefighters, who were transported to the hospital. three with minor injuries and released. one with a minor injury, and admitted. one who is still in very critical condition. and one who sucomed to his injuries at the hospital. >> reporter: a neighborhood shaken by an unexpected tragedy. now, this scene as we mentioned is still active. we're about a half mile away from there. officials are continuing to work the area saying a lot of that gas released ran through sewer pipes underground. they want to make sure all the gas is out of that area before allowing people back into their homes and businesses. >> ron mott, what a night. thank you very much. now to a story of survival getting a lot of attention.

this happened in alaska. a seaplane crashed into the side of a mountain and remarkably, everybody onboard was found to be alive and rescued. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest on this story. hi, miguel. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, the small tour planes that can take off and land in the water are a common way of getting around in remote areas of alaska. we're told late yesterday one was loaded with sightseers taking in the state's rugged beauty when it suddenly fell from the sky. it took rescue teams nearly three hours to find the wreckage. the battered seaplane colliding into a rocky mountain in the a remote section of alaska. onboard, 11 people, including the pilot, somehow survived the harrowing crash landing. authorities say the single engine float plane like this one was soaring through alaska's beauty when disaster suddenly struck. after the plane's mayday call reached the coast guard, a helicopter crew battled

turbulent weather, fighting rain and fog before finding the crash site, 2,000 feet up this mountainous, rocky terrain. the tach one air commuter flight was scheduled to fly from steam boat bay, and it crashed on mount jumbo on the prince of wales island. >> the accident site was at about 2,000 feet, trees and rock covered ter rain and weather not cooperating. >> reporter: a coast guard helicopter hovering over the crash site managed the hoist the passengers to safety. it was a miracle no one was killed. notice of the passengers suffering minor injuries. one listed in serious condition. tach one air says it suspended all scheduled flights today and is cooperating with the ntsb. this area of alaska, known for splendid, rugged beauty, but on this day, this flight offered a terrifying view, 11 people will never forget.

fat natalie joins us from los angeles. >> behind me you the see crash seen, the motorcycle clearly on its side. after seeing this video you wonder how clohe's ntot more seriously injured. the accident that sent him flying 20 feet into the air. this video captures the moem his scooter slammed into a mercedes in italy sending the hollywood a-lister high into the air before he crashed back to the ground. watch one more time as his scooter collides with the car. >> he got in a big accident. >> you can see the car's driver gets out to help clooney and calls for help in the video obtained by italian news outlet. clooney stays on the ground. new photos show him being treated by paramedics at the crash scene. the car's windshield smashed.

the academy award winner was reportedly traveling about 60 miles an hour and heading to the set of his new tv show "catch 22" when the crash happened. an ambulance took the 57-year-old to the hospital. incredibly, he did not sustain any serious injuries, but italian media reports he complained of a slight trauma to his pelvis and bruises to a leg and arm. the claimed actor, director and screen writer was reportedly wearing a helmet. reports that his wife amal rushed to be by his side. they were seen leaving hours later in a private car. he is home recovering and will be fine. clooney has a home on the italian mainland. this summer he's staying in sardinia with their twins. they married in venice in a picture perfect wedding in 2014.

final boy and their coach was evacuated. but the area that was dry in there is now completely inundated. this was a very close run thing. it was an emotional rescue for the divers, of course. i was spending some time overpass with them. they are emotional, they are overjoyed, they are exhausted. as for the boys, we now have the first image of one of the boys in the hospital overnight. they are well. the parents have been able to visit, some of them, in the same room wearing surgical masks and gloves and gowns for fear of infection. the last few minutes, the commander has been describing the rescue operation saying at one point they couldn't fight the water and the mud and they were beginning to lose hope. well, they didn't lose hope. this changed from mission impossible just a week ago to mission accomplished. savannah. >> all right, bill. thank you very much. president trump is in brussels this morning for the

>> a piece of clothing in bushes, baby formula, the breadcrumbs in a vast montana wilderness that led to the rescue of the five-month-old infant. >> i was literally taking a step, and i was about to walk on top of the baby's head. i heard the sticks crack when i looked down and saw a baby face down. >> officer jessop said they responded to a complaint about a disorderly potentially armed man in hot springs, montana. when officers arrived at the say francis crowley, high on meth and bath salts admitted he had crashed his car and buried and baby in the woods but was not able to tell the officers where. they feared the worst. >> i had prepared myself mentally to find a dead baby, if at all. >> but miraculously the infant survived more than nine hours in the western montana woods buried face down una pile of sticks and debris wearing wet and soiled clothes. >> the only thing i can say about this whole thing is it was
