several more meetings and bilateral discussions today before heading to the uk. all part of what some critics are calling mr. trump's disruption tour. >> with the president taking more swings at nato and u.s. allies while making demands not even the u.s. is able to meet. all ahead of that highly charged sit-down with vladimir putin. nbc white house correspondent jeff bennett has more on what we can expect from the commander in chief today. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, milissa. president trump kicks off his final day at the nato summit in bruce wells a couple of meetings. one focused on the nato military mission in afghanistan. the other focused on security in eastern europe. it's a crucial issue for some of the european allies given russia's growing presence in the region. of course yesterday the summit got off to a bruising start. the president attacking allies for alleged trade abuses and for not spending enough on their own military budgets. the president even floating a proposal for nato member nations to increase their defense spending from the currently agreed upon 2% gdp up to 4%.

4% of their total economic output. now, from here the president heads to the uk. he's got a sit-downit's also goh the british queen. he spends the weekend at his private golf course in scotland, and then he heads into that h h high-stakes summit, that sit down with russian president vladimir putin. milissa? >> jeff, thank you. the president isn't just rielg up concern among counterparts across europe but among his own base on capitol hill as lawmakers fret about their slow but steady isolation on the world stage. nbc's hallie jackson has more on the drama that played out in brussels. >> reporter: at a summit that's supposed to symbolize solidarity president trump's tough talk went over like a lead balloon. before this cocktail chat with germany's leader a blistering breakfast. >> germany is totally controlled by russia. >> reporter: characteristically combative, the president deride aid controversial pipeline deal between germany and russia. >> germany as far as i'm concerned is captive to russia because it's getting so much of

its energy from russia. >> reporter: merkel, dismissive, responded "germany is in kroefl its own decisions." y pay into their own defense budgets from 2% to 4%. not even the u.s. hits that goal. >> pledge increasing defense spending to 2%. and let's start with that. >> reporter: joining the president, his team of top advisers like chief of staff john kelly, who appeared annoyed at points. the white house clarifying it's because he'd hoped for a full breakfast and only cheese and pastries were offered. defense secretary james mattis is in brussels too. the the pentagon says the secretary looked forward to productive talks but multiple sources tell nbc news mattis has actually been worried the president might make tensions worse with military partners. that worry extends to capitol hill, where lawmakers are looking ahead to monday's meeting between the president and vladimir putin,orke to undermine the alliance. >> i'm very concerned we have a

ough meeting with nato and then meeting with putin and it worked against our country's national interest. >> reporter: while a joint declaration by all nato nations including the u.s. takes aim at russia's aggressive actions, it's not clear how the president will handle putin one on one. the risk, irritating friends while looking friendly with their enemy. hallie jackson, nbc news, brussels. now to a significant development in the case against indicted former trump campaign chief paul manafort. a judge shot down manafort's request to stay at his current prison in virginia, choosing to send him to a different facility in alexandria instead. the decision comes after this jaw-dropping filing from special counsel robert mueller shed light on just why manafort would want to remain where he is. the filing counters manafort's request to delay his trial, claiming "among the unique privileges manafort enjoys in jail are a private self-contained living unit, his own bathroom and shower

facility, his own personal telephone and his own workspace to prepare for trial." prosecutors say manafort has even boasted about the vip treatment he's receiving in his current jail, including his ability to get e-mails sent and not having to wear a prison uniform. manafort, whose bail was revoked for alleged witness tampering, is awaiting two triavirginia, one in washington a slew of charges tied to his business dealings and lobbying work with ukraine. the fbi agent removed from the russia investigation over texts criticizing president trump is headed to capitol hill today. peter strzok will defend himself against allegations of bias in a public hearing in front of two house committees. for more let's go to nbc's tracey potts in washington. hi, tracie, good morning. >> good morning, everyone. this is the fbi agent who was taken off the mueller investigation after it was revealed that he exchanged text messages with a former fbi attorney who he also had a

relationship with and they talked about president trump, then candidate trump, in a negative way. the trump team has used this as evidence saying that the mueller inveatlawmakers have already heard from peter strzok in an 11-hour closed session before a joint committee of congress and now his attorney is wondering if he'll get a fair hearing today saying some of that information was leaked. take a look to the president's response to all of this coming from brussels. the president tweeting that as he heads out to the nato meeting he sees that lisa page, the other person he was messaging with, is dodging a subpoena and refusing to show up and testify. strzok's attorney says he will gladly testify today before those committees. phillip? >> tracie potts for us in washington. tracie, thank you. 12 young boys and their soccer coach are on the road to recovery and we're getting our first look at them since they

were rescued from that partially flooded cave in thailand. a senior health official says the boys lost weight during their 17-day ordeal but are generally in good condition and show no signs of stress. however, they are still facing more time in the hospital. nbc's janis mackey frayer tells us more. >> reporter: a first glimpse at the boys after that daring three-day rescue mission, appearing relaxed, wearing face masks and gowns, waving from their hospital beds. their families kept six feet away behind glass to prevent infection. health officials say the 12 boys are in good condition, mainly because of their coach, 25-year-old chatawong. he was the last person out and was the weakest. in a letter he apologized to the boys' parents. >> happy happy. >> reporter: his aunt telling us she's relieved. his uncle still worried. "he must feel remorse that he went there with the kids," he said, "but what's done is done." the incredible mission, a half

mile underground, each boy sedated to ease anxiety, tethered to divers to get them through the dark narrow passages. new video showing parts of the rescue. the boys carried on stretchers. >> we knew that if we didn't act when we acted then there was not going to be a successful rescue. >> reporter: and just after the last person was out the main water pump failed, flooding the cave, sending rescue workers scrambling to escape. by then the boys and their coach were free, reunited at the hospital, where they'll spend up to a week. at the school where six of the boys go -- >> did you jump up and down? >> yeah. around the house. >> reporter: their friends anxious for them to come home. >> janis, thank you. in phoenix a grocery store caught fire during the middle of a strong storm. fire officials initially responded to a call of a roof collapse, but the fire quickly engulfed this safeway. the logo no longer visible here, toppled over by the flames.

leading the news this morning, there is word that stormy daniels, the porn star who made headlines for an alleged affair with donald trump, has been arrested in columbus, ohio. that is according to a tweet from daniels' lawyer michael avenatti. he says it happened while she was "performing the same act she's performed across the country" at nearly 100 strip clubs. nbc news has not independently confirmed her arrest. he goes on to say it was a setup, politically motivated,

and reeks of desperation, and that they will fight all bogus charges. the founder and ceo of papa john's is stepping down as chairman of the board after apologizing for using a racial slur. the resignation comes hours after john schnatter admitted to using the n word during a conference call in may and apologized for the inappropriate and hurtful language. he also resigned from the university of louisville board of trustees earlier in the day. papa john's international says it has accepted schnatter's resignation and will appoint a new chairman in coming weeks. later today, your twitter feed could appear a bit less crowded. the social media company is purging tens of millions of suspicious accounts from users' followers as it looks to restore trust on the very popular platform, and it follows a report after report depicting harassment and the spread of false information. today's change takes aim at social media fraud, immediately hitting those users whoeav bought fake followers, purchased those fake followers.
