ad lib live picture-- bay bridge and good thursday morning. and you know what that means. just one day away from friday. as we take a look outside live here at the bay bridge. a little foggy there this morning. but you know, hey. it's thursday. thanks so much for starting our day with us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. you can certainly feel the moech in the air. >> it's going to get worse as we head into tomorrow. humidity will be going up and we'll also be watching out for more hot weather as we get a live look outside right now in san jose. it's an all clear start with low 60s now. we'll make it into the upper 60s already by 8:00. at noon, we're at our normal high temperature. we continue to go up from there with mostly sunny skies.

we'll talk about what that humidity will feel like over the next couple of days and a look ahead to the weekend. mike, you're starting out with a couch alert. >> couch alert. while you might want to sit on the couch later today, we want to make sure you avoid this couch. it's an the on-ramp, 280 northbound. fecting the 10th street on-ramp. it's block by a couch. chp has an update, someone hit the couch or loveseat, they want to be specific about that. the freeway itself moves smoothly. if you're leaving the area of san jose state, going to the bay bridge area, nicely. a disabled vehicle reported getting away from the bridge. i'm going to check if the connector is affected at all, and a minor backup starting to ease up at the bay bridge for the cash lane. back to you. >> thank yous mike. >> 4:31. breaking news out of oakland. a 3-year-old boy shot in his

mother's car. this happened off 80th avenue. >> we're joined live at oakland children's hospital with what happened. and hopefully an update on this child's condition, pete. >> yeah, good morning to you. we're still waiting to get an unidate on the 3-year-old's condition, but at last check, they're telling us the 3-year-old was getting treatment right here behind us at children's hospital in oakland. let's get you two new pieces of video i want to show our viewers related to the scene. the first piece of video you're going to see there are bullet cases not too far from the scene of the shooting where it took place at 80th and holly streets in oakland. now, according to oakland police, they're saying the 3-year-old boy was shot in a car just before 11:00 p.m. last night. the driver of the vehicle called police and said she was driving the child to the hospital, to highland hospital, because he was shot, and that's where oakland police met them in that car. now, i want to show you another piece of video. this is from highland hospital in oakland. you can see there, that's the

car with a bullet hole in it. the child was eventually transported behind me to oakland children's hospital. at this point, still no update on the boy's condition, and the child appears at least at this point to be the only victim. of course, we'll continue to stay on this developing story. i'll have another update for you at 5:30 a.m. we're live here in oakland, pete suratos for today in the bay. >> sad this happened to an innocent child here. >> hope that little child is okay. >> developing now, stormy daniels' attorney blasting her arrest last night, calling it a setup and politically motivated. we have new video from overnight to show you. showing officers in columbus, ohio, putting the adult film actress in handcuffs and escorting her to a police station. daniels was arrested at a strip club where she was performing. she's facing misdemeanor charges after police say she allowed a patron to touch her during a performance. that's a no no in ohio. her attorney says the incident was nonsexual. police released daniels

overnight. she's supposed to be arraigned tomorrow morning. >> affecting your vote. california's republican party is turning its shoulder on a republican candidate running for congress in the east bay. some say candidate john fitzgerald is racist. and an anti-semitic robocall backing his campaign is causing concern. in an e-mail, fitzgerald said he did not authorize the call and does not support the message, but the chair of the contra costa republican party who is jewish says that the california republican party does not endorse fitzgerald because of his racist views. you can check out the candida candidate's website at social media pages reveal he's a holocaust denier and while republicans do not endorse fitzgerald, 36,000 people voted for him in the june primary. and he will be on the ballot in november. >> it's really, really unfortunate that this happened. our party is going to take

action in the general election to see that this doesn't happen again. >> and the republican party says it's sending fitzgerald a letter saying he is not welcome in their organization. they're also working on a strategy to inform voters about his views before they cast a ballot in november. >> it's 4:35 right now. peninsula congress woman jackie speier is undergoing surgery today. her office is not saying what kind of surgery. only that she will miss votes in congress over the next two weeks. she'll be recovering at her home in san mateo county. speier has been representing the 14th district since 2008. >> 4:35. new this morning, you might notice more traffic cops in palo alto. police there once again have a dedicated traffic team. the unit focuses on catching speeders, patrolling school zones and monitoring commercial truck routes. it was the disband in 2016 due to low staffing and budget cuts.

official felt the weekly traffic problems are the top public safety complaint in the city. >> today we could learn more about major service cuts for early morning b.a.r.t. riders. board of directors meets today. trains will start running at fib:00 a.m. instead of 4:00 a.m. crews are retrofitting the tube so it's safe during an earthquake. b.a.r.t. says the tube itself is seismically sound, but they're worried an outer shell and concrete liner would crack in a major quake. b.a.r.t. will replace early morning train service with new bus routes. >> coming up here, papa john's founder resigned as the pizza company chairman. what he said during a conference call that forced the sudden decision. >> plus, the newest edition planned in the south bay that could bring housing and new business.

good morning. i'm contessa brewer live at cnbc's global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street poised to rebound. dow futures up 186 points right now after yesterday's sell-off. that was sparked by more trade war fears after the u.s. unveiled new tariffs on chinese goods. the dow snapped its four-day winning streak. it was the longest positive stretch we have seen in about a month. on today's watch list, data on unemployment and consumer prices. the dow fell yesterday 219 points and nasdaq dropped 42.

>> papa john's founder john schneider has resigned as chairman of the company after he admitted he used a racial slur on a media training conference call. forbes reported that back in may, he was trying to downplay controversial comments he made last year about nfl players kneeling during the national anthem. he allegedly complained that kfc founder colonel sanders never faced backlash for using racist words. the founder of papa john's in 1984, now it's grown to more than 4700 stores in nearly 40 countries. >> you know, there's lot of research that supports napping in the middle of the day. and mattress company caspar is opening a store called the dreamry, where you can get a 45-minute nap for $25. it's a sound-proof sleeping pod with curtains. it has blankets, socks, an eye mask. if you want, you can get pajamas, tooth brush, audio tracks of white noise or music.

you probably don't want to leave, and in some places. probably cheaper than a manhattan apartment. >> exactly. >> contessa, thank you. >> it's 4:40 right now. new details now on a transit village planned in san jose. it's going up just a few train stops away from google's huge development downtown. here's where. it's by campbell at southwest expressway and south backm. it's called the south bascome gate way project. we updated on the proposal filed with city managers. we found it as well. here's renderings for the developer. the paper says the project now includes nearly 600 residential units and more than 214,000 square feet of offices. >> well, coming up here on today in the bay, a look at your forecast. >> well, it will be another hot day, and then we'll add a little more humidity to that hotness as we get a live look outside in san jose. let's go to campbell and check out how our temperatures shape up for today. low 60s through 8:00.

and good morning to you. a live look out on dublin this morning. 4:45 for you, as we get started with the day. >> happening now, don't wake anyone. this is the field of dreams, literally, at at&t park. it's a slumber party happening out there. look at all those tents. fans yesterday set up tents on the field. last night, they watched movies, star wars last jedi. league of their own, on the stadium big screen. they got to munch on pizza, snacks, and play all sorts of games. a thrill for parents and kids alike. >> i'm thrilled for this as a unique opportunity for our family to have special memories together. >> i love sleeping here. >> i love sleeping here. pretty cute there. now, this was the giants annual sleepover.

the team says it's the oldest stadium slumber party in the country. >> i always think that would be so much fun. have to bundle up. >> like when you said yesterday, mike, wish you would have gone and woke everybody up. >> don't wake them up. >> we're doing the show live. >> good morning. >> no wonder why we're fought invited. it's so funny to watch them on the camera when they start to pack up. it takes two minutes and they're gone. it's like okay, i guess it's over. >> the field workers get it looking good. >> they have cool weather, too. let's get another look at san francisco this morning. with the fog just kind of draped all over the city this morning. and yeah, that's making you feel cooler out there with those breezy winds. the temperature at 57 degrees. here in san jose, at 62 with clear skies. and it's 63 degrees in livermore. we have mid 50s for much of the north bay. and let's go to walnut creek where it's going to be partly cloudy starting out for the day.

66 degrees, and then for the afternoon, making it into the mid 80s. this will be cooler than it has been. where we have been in the 90s all week long, and today for the south bay, we're reaching 86 degrees. 89 in east san jose, morgan hill, as well as gilroy. 90 today in walnut creek. while oakland today reaches 75. and we'll be up to 83 in redwood city. daly city, 69. also 69 in the mission district, and north bay looking at some low to mid 80s today. getting dressed this morning because it does feel so mild, and also humid, you'll be comfortable with a t-shirt and shorts. and that stickiness will increase as the day goes along. as we see that surge in monsoonal moisture, monsoonal moisture is basically a reversal of the wind that brings in more humidity. that's different from your typical wind pattern, so we're seeing it now coming in from the southwest. we can see the clouds, and even some rain. yesterday, we had quite a bit of

lightning strikes over the southern sierra. we'll be watching out for that possibility today. and we can already see as we look at the humidity and the moisture, it peaks tomorrow. and then it gradually goes down for the weekend. so it is going to be a steamy weekend across the bay area. starting out definitely for tomorrow. we're looking at some mid 80s all weekend long, even into early next week. while san francisco stays in the 60s. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you're going out to the maze. >> that's right. over in the east bay, contra costa county, and feed into the maze, everything moves very smoothly. it's getting away from the bay bridge where we have a hazard reported. sounds like a disabled vehicle. a car with a flat tire being repaired at highway 24. that's coming away from the bay bridge, eastbound 580, partially affecting the right lane of the connector. should be clear in second. chp sounded like they were getting ready to clear it from the report as well. down here, more clearing. this is a crash, north 280, the

tenth street on-ramp affected by a loveseat or couch that was hit. sounds like there's debris. chp said it will break apart. your lanes are now clear, but there will be clutter perhaps for the next few minutes as you enter tenth street. 101 moving smoothly. you see how light the traffic flow is here. that's why we have green sensors all around. >> thanks so much. 4:49. new video of a miraculous rescue in alaska. this is from the coast guard. crews saving nearly a dozen people after a tour plane crashed in the mountains. it took rescue teams nearly three hours to find the wreckage. a small sea plane crashed on prince of wales island. all 11 people onboard including the pilot somehow survived the harrowing crash landing. this morning, we're hearing from the husband of one of the survivors. >> i had a bunch of texts waiting for me. i knew they were okay, they were in the hospital, that everything was okay. it was a relief to actually see her, of course, and see that she was physically, you know, okay.

>> he sounds so calm. you can see the full interview on the "today" show this morning. >> well, happening tomorrow night, a stretch of vta track near downtown san jose will be shut down this weekend. this comes after a deadly crash near the race street station last sunday. crews need to make more repairs to the tracks and a support pole. they will be closed tomorrow night starting at 11:30 through early monday morning. vta plans to run a bus bridge through that area over the weekend. >> happening today, london breed attends her first public event as the official mayor of san francisco. we brought you her historic inauguration live yesterday. marcus and i, on the midday newscast. hundreds of supporters gathered outside city hall to watch breed take the oath of office to become the city's first ever black female mayor. this afternoon, she attends an emergency preparedness meeting with first responders. >> lessons learned after last month' vote by mail experiment.

five counties including napa and san mateo tried this. there was a lot of confusion with this, and the sacramento registrar says there needs to be a better outreach to some people so they can know when drop-off boxes and vote centers are open. there's also a push to put prepaid postage on the envelopes saying a lot of young people have never purchased a stamp before. >> a new record at uc. they admitted more transfer students than ever before for the fall semester. more than 28,000 transfer applicants were offered spots. in past interviews, the chancellor talked about a focus to make it easier for community college students to transfer in. in about a year, the university is set to implement a plan guaranteeing transfers to students who make a certain gpa and take specific classes. >> 4:51 right now. coming up here on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. >> a medical mishap overseas triggers a billing mystery here at home. i'm consumer investigator chris

well, nbc bay area responds to a san jose man left with a hospital bill after heart problems struck in south america. >> we helped the viewer straighten things out with his insurance provider. chris chmura shows us how. >> good morning. dave smith was on vacation at one of the most remarkable places on earth, right there in mauchu picchu in peru, but he felt sick and went to a doctor. the situation was so serious, dave was flown to a heart hospital in lima for life saving treatment. he learned health care is much less expensive in peru than the u.s. his hospital visit came to just $456 which he paid out of pocket. his health insurance provider agreed to cover the bill. dave says kaiser told him it would mail him his reimbursement check. this was back in february, but he never got the check. after weeks of getting nowhere, dave reached out to us. we reached out to kaiser, and

let's get to kari right now. it's going to be humid and we'll feel it. in palo alto this morning, at least the visibility is clear and temperatures start out in the low 60s. feels warmer as you get ready to head out the door and warms up to the upper 70s by early afternoon. also see a few more clouds moving in. we'll talk about the surge in monsoonal moisture coming up, and mike, you have a warning for drivers through the south bay. >> if you're traveling through the south bay and headed farther south, because anyway north of silicon valley, great. easy drive. you're at green. still green here, southbound 17 as well, heading down toward the summit, but chp lets us know there's a disabled sounds like a jeep cherokee in the slow lane. so we have our eyes on this, and you keep your eyes open there, it's dark through those areas heading to the summit. no problem as you're heading north on 101 out of the south county. san martin, morgan hill at speed as well. a quick look
