heels of a contentious nato summit. the president accusing nato members of not paying their fair share for defense and taking particularly aim at germany just hours before this group photo. >> germany as far as i'm concerned is captive to russia. >> reporter: after a series of last minute meetings in brussels, president trump will kickoff a two day visit of pomp and path entry here in britain. theresa may will welcome him. then a private dinner and after official meetings tomorrow at checkers, the prime minister's country state the president and first lady will have tea with the queen, photos ops aimed at punctuating the special relationship between the president and prime minister but the two leaders have clashed on a range of issues from trade to immigration and foreign policy, but here in london it won't just be a red carpet welcome. president trump also expected to be greeted by protests, activists planing to mock the president with an orange baby

blimp flying over the city. a demonstration approved by london's mayor who has vocally opposed the u.s. president. the president clearly aiming to show strength at nato ahead of that critical face-to-face with russia's president vladimir putin set for next week, but first, his meetings with british prime minister theresa may about to get under way. they will cover a range of topics, everything from trade to -- >> thank you. we're joined now by the former national security adviser in the george w. bush administrator. juan, good morning to you. i guess my question to you is -- does this feel like it was all part of the plan, the president goes into nato, talks tough says what good is this organization and gets these concessions, he says, out of the nato allies. is it tough tactics that paid off? >> i think it's a tale of two summits. nato seemed to be in crisis, the

president threatening to withdraw, attacking partners. today, a very positive review of what praising himself in terms of getting more defense spending. i do think this is part of the president's tactics. he's transactional in his foreign policy. he's hyperpersonal in how he thinks about these issues and so he from one day to the next issues change and today you have a much more positive view of the nato alliance. the problem, of course, this leaves allies a bit uneasy, unsure of what the u.s. commitment is long-term and certainly questioning what happens next in helsinki. there's a lot of unease here moving into that meeting. >> just to underscore, on monday the president meets with putin. if you're vladimir putin and you're watching all this unfold, what are you thinking? >> you may be licking your chops a bit. he's in a very strong position. not because the president's necessarily weak, but because

all eyes are on putin and moscow. putin knows there's a lot of political turmoil in the united states surrounding russia. he has seen the transatlantic divide not just in the context of nato but the trade war and trade problems between the u.s. and europe, and so he sees a divide transatlanticly. he also may see an opportunity to divide the president from his own administration despite what we think, the president's administration has actually been pretty tough on russia. the question is, can president putin begin to divide the president -- divorce the president from his own administration and his administration's policies. >> we will see what happens on monday, but, of course the uk. thank you for your perspective. >> thank you. now to an update on that story that has had us on the edge of our seats for more than two weeks after an amazing rescue. the thai soccer team trapped in that flooded cave are under quarantine in the hospital but their road to recovery is just

getting started. janice mackey frayer is in shanghai with this progress. >> reporter: the boys continue to improve and doctors say they could be released from hospital within days. in the meantime, the world got its first look at them. the boys recovering and relaxing after that daring three day rescue mission wearing face masks and hospital gowns, waving from their beds still together now that they're free of the their families wiping away tears from behind glass separated from their children to prevent infection. the healthy team a remarkable change from the haunting scene of 12 boys and their coach gone, hungry and trapped. the boys are doing well mainly because of their coach, 25-year-old. he was the last person out and was also the weakest. sharing his rations of food and water to keep the boys going, a former buddhist monk he also taught them meditation.

in a letter he apologizized to the boys' parents. his aunt telling us she's relieved. his uncle proud telling us i will hug him and cheer them up and tell them to keep the fighting spirit. just up the road the cave has been sealed off still flooded and so dangerous, crews here tell us it could be days before they're able to take out all of the equipment used to save the teen. the incredible rescue mission, a half mile underground watched around the world. each boy see dated to ease anxiety, tethered to divers to get them through the dark narrow passages. this new video showing parts of the rescue the boys carried out on stretchers and just after the last person was out, the main water pump failed flooding the cave forcing rescue workers to scramble to safety. british divers arriving back home today describing the tough conditions. >> flooded, dark, poor visibility under water, so a lot

of difficulty. >> reporter: the boys and their coach will spend a few more days in the hospital then home. at the school where six of the boys go. >> i'm so happy about it. >> reporter: did you jump up and down? >> yeah, around the house. >> reporter: their friends are anxious to get the world's most popular soccer team back. >> janice, it's so interesting to hear that some of the boys were see dated in some way to perform this rescue. do you know anything more about that? >> reporter: officials say they weren't tran equalized but they were given antianxiety meds to take the edge off. every diver i talked to said the same thing, that the wild card is panic. they just didn't know how the kids would react once they got in the water and panic could have been deadly for the kids and the divers and they were working with such a narrow window of opportunity the divers and the doctor who was in the cave with the kids needed to do everything they could to control the environment in order to pull

this off, which remarkably and thankfully they did. >> the results speak for themselves. it was incredible. thank you. we'll have a lot more on their road to recovery in our next half hour but now we turn to another miracle rescue, this one happened on a remote mountainside in alaska. we're learning more this morning about the small plane crash thousands of feet above sea level where all 11 people made it out alive. this morning one of those survivors is reporting exactly what happened just before impact. let's go right to miguel almaguer. he's got the story this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the coast guard calls it a miracle. imagine this, a small plane slamming into a mountain that's in the middle of nowhere, and incredibly everyone was saved. >> survivors. >> reporter: this is the moment they were plucked into the air after their small plane slammed into the ground, 11 survivors hoisted to safety after a her row win crash landing in

dangerous weather, even for coast guard pilots a white knuckle flight. >> some of the most horrible conditions i've encountered with a decade of flying. >> reporter: after spotting the crumbled seat plane with its landing gear sheered off, rescue teams had to navigate the dangerous rocky tree line mountain. the crash site so remote after the pilot called 9-1-1, it took three hours for rescue teams to reach them. passenger christine new bibill still can't believe she survived. >> kind of surreal at first when we saw the helicopter through the fog and realized they could actually see us. that was like, whoa, we're going to get off here. it was amazing. >> reporter: she sent her husband melvin new bibill a ser of frantic text message that's he shared with us. we just crashed she says. i'm so scared right now. the emotional trauma he says worst than the physical. >> she has a minor fracture and

i can't think of which vertebrae it is, a bone spur off of the vertebrae where the muscles connect to and some basic bruising, so pretty minor injuries considering, you know, that they were in a plane crash. >> reporter: this video of the single engine plane taken last year shows the plane after a water landing. on tuesday, it was flying from alaska's steam boat bay when it slammed into mountain jumbo on prince of wales island. one survivor tells us the plane came out of the clouds and hit the mountain without warning or time to prepare. >> everybody was really happy to see us. there was a lot of high-fiving going on and maybe a little bit of hypothermia. >> reporter: this crash landing and safe escape a miracle on the mountain. the ntsb says it's going to have several more questions for the pilot. their investigation could take weeks if not months.

back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. now to the new fallout from a controversy involving one of america's favorite pizza chains. overnight the founder and chairman of papa john's stepped down hours after issuing a mea culpa for using a racial slur earlier this year. kerry sanders has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is not the first time john schnatter has found himself at the center of a high profile controversy involving race and as you noted, overnight, the founder and chairman of this pizza chain resigned in an attempt to try to minimize the damage already done. >> i'm john shshatter papa john. >> reporter: he resigned leaving the pizza company transforming into a household man.

apologizing for using the "n" word during a may conference call saying, news reports attributing the use of inappropriate and hurtful language to me during a media training session regarding race are true. regardless of the context, i apologize simply stated, racism has no place in our society. it all stems from a role playing exercise with the company's now former marketing agency. >> this is how you do it. >> reporter: he apparently was trying to justify previous negative comments he had made about the nfl that got him into hot water. he reportedly saying on the call, colonel sanders called blacks the "n" word and complaining that the kentucky fried chicken founder never faced backlash. the call's intent was to prevent pr disasters. it has cut ties with papa john's. the third largest pizza chain in the world saying, it condemns racism and any insensitive language no matter the situation

or setting, adding we take great pride in the diversity of the papa john's family, though diversity and inclusion is an area where we will continue to strive to do better. the fallout swift. after the news broke wednesday, shares of papa john's fell nearly 5% to a 12 month low losing almost $100 million in market value. this isn't schnatter's first slice of controversy. he stepped down as ceo last year after criticizing nfl leadership and blaming slowed sales growth on the controversy surrounding athletes who kneeled during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice and police brutality. the company apologized two weeks later. >> better ingredients, better pizza. >> reporter: and this morning the company hopes better behavior. john schnatter did not return calls from nbc news for comment.

this morning it's unclear how customers will react or punish the pizza chain. >> thank you. let's turn to soccer, shall we. croatia is headed to its first world cup final after an incredibly stunning upset over england. carson, you got all the details on this. >> i do. good morning. for much of the game it looked like it was going to be england. less than five minutes in, glend got a 1-0 lead. england held that lead until the 67 minute mark when croatia tied it up one a piece with the leaping kick just in front of the goal area right there. that game would go into extra time and in the 109th minute croatia would score the game winning score. the left footer and the celebration was on. croatia will face france in the world cup final on sunday morning.

invasion. >> reporter: the brutal attack by an unknown assay lent left his ex-girlfriend severely beaten and hospitalized. in an instagram post since deleted a friend blames mccoy calling him the devil and an animal writing i can't believe you did this to my best friend. several reports say mccoy was training at the time of the assault. he posted for the record, the totally baseless and offensive claims made against me tuesday on social media are completely false. i have not had any direct contact with any of the people involved in months. court records show mccoy had been trying to evict her from his home for more than a year. the documents saying they were no longer in a relationship after he allowed her to live rent free while at the premises for five months. police are not saying whether they believe mccoy had any involvement in the burglary and beating in his home and no charges have been filed in the case. but they do say there was no

and that's your latest weather. let's turn back to the road ahead for the 12 thai boys and their soccer coach who spent weeks trapped underground. they're in various stages of recovery and facing not just physical challenges but mental ones as well. stephanie gosk has been looking into that part of it. >> good morning. the great news is the boys are said to be in great physical shape with a few fighting lung infections. experts say they could face more challenges down the road. their rescue from a flooded cave captured the world's attention. now we're seeing the 12 boys for the first time since they were saved. waving offering the v for victory sign for everyone who cheered them on. they are optimistic about their physical recovery. the boys who spent more than two weeks in the cave have been given antibiotics, vitamins and vaccin

vaccines. one official saying so far no problems with their vision or fever. >> for the boys, their age was an advantage in terms of any potential physical or health complications. >> right now they're altogether in one hospital wing. but are mostly being kept apart from their loved ones. some of their parents are allowed in the room but forced to keep their distance in masks and gowns to protect the boys from infection. their fight is far from over. expertses are turning their focus to what might be a bigger concern for the boys moving forward, their mental health. >> we worry about their risk of ptsd. they've been confined and isolated. >> symptoms can appear months and even years after an intense event like the one they survived and can include mood changes, nightmares and irritability. >> over the next several months, monitor them and make sure they're emotionally processing this. >> the rescue in thailand is similar to one in 2010 when 33

about two hours from good morning. it's 8:26. i'm marcus washington. about two hours from right now, a zoo debut decades in the making. today is the grabbed opening for the oakland zoo's massive california trail expansion. now, as you enter the zoo, you probably heard about this one. the zoo will be opening 56 acres of new terrain. more than double its size. zoo leaders fir started putting the idea together 25 years ago. the oakland mayor is scheduled to attend today's ribbon cutting which takes place at 10:30 this morning. for your morning commute, there's a jam in the south bay. >> maybe use that sky tram to get through this. this is the backup north 101, slow through san jose. this is our typical shot around

>> this is everything between harlem and heaven in the cook book me and alexander put together. a little chicken and then your favorite salad. onions, brown sugar, let that sweat down a little bit. tomato paste. and i know people kind of get upset when you use canned tomatoes. there's nothing wrong with canned tomatoes. >> i don't get upset. >> you don't no in throw that in bird's eye chili. >> why do you like the bird's eye? >> it comes from west africa. i spent time in ghana. it's in the cooking. i'm bringing west africa to everybody. >> and cook it down. >> this is what it should look like. you got to throw in peppercorns, all spice, bay leaf, clove. chicken stock. stir it up here for me. a little bit of gluten free soy

sauce. and then i use rice wine vinegar. you can use champagne. >> of course you can. cook it down? >> 20 to 30 minutes. you want it to be a nice consistency. it's going to look like this. i'm going to let you grill the chicken thighs. >> liquid gold. >> yeah. liquid gold. throw it in here. i will let this marinade for about an hour. >> could you do this on the grill outside? >> you can do it on the grill outside. you can do it in a big green egg or on a pan in your home. this is how my mom would do it. she gets nervous about the grill outside. >> this would cook up pretty quickly. >> right, and these are chicken thighs. i'm a chicken thigh guy. a lot of juice and meat. but you can use chicken breasts. >> cook these on each side. >> for about five minutes on each side. it will look like this or like this. >> beautiful. and i love that rice. >> the black rice?
