greipel's spin at all. probably had to ease off the pedals a little bit, but both still pedalling at some thousands of watts while they're smashing each other at 40 miles per hour. but, yeah, it's going to be hard. i'm not going to be surprised and i don't want to hear it, but i wouldn't be surprised if they do slap fernando with a penalty for this one. >> and it would make sense, christian, because even though as you guys pointed out didn't impede his line, he did initiate that contact when he didn't have to with that intent. >> but that one, the first one, i'm giving him a pass. >> the second one. >> the second one right there, that the is trying to make room for himself and get by him because he he easily is faster than greipel right now. i think he should have waited and had a cool head and kept his sprint going and i think he might have come closer to getting second place. >> and andre might have a point that he lost the stage to groenewegen because he had to deal with gaviria leaning on him for a moment. the if that's the case, if
7:31 am
that's the determination, they will not take groenewegen's win away, but that might be cause for disqualification for gaviria. >> how do you think the rest of the sprinters feel? that first week, the sprints were dominated by sagan and gaviria. to have groenewegen win two in a row, the rest might say, hey, i think these guys are beatable. >> i think it's the teams. the teams are tired. every day you have to think about how hard they've been pushing, leading the peloton for hundreds of kilometers at a time. we talk to phillip gilbert in the car yesterday. i said how are you doing? he said i was flying. i'm exhausted now. they have one more big day to come tomorrow and then they'll be done. >> further behind than he thought he would be. that's how you could describe dan martin. he won two stages ago. he was involved in a crash at the 17 kilometer mark. he lost 1:14 today. >> your tour de france can turn
7:32 am
in the blink of an eye. touch of wheels, poo pile up da martin perhaps this close to the finish line. it's been a bit of a hallmark. it goss over the bars, with obvious damage to his left elbow. and his then team called back from the field. now it is all hands on deck. but they're doing the lead out for the stage win at the front. how are you going to close that gap against the whole peloton? >> you're not. and he didn't. and they just actually lost time and, really, i have to be critical to dan. i love you, dan, but, you know, when i was a teammate with him, he did the same kind of thing. and he would always sit back as far as possible, try to recover as much energy as possible. but days like today, especially on an easy day like this, he had 20k, 17 kilometers ago this happened. get to the front. get together with your teammates. make their life easier and try a little harder to stay up at the front and stay out of trouble. >> staying out of trouble tomorrow will be awfully tough. a lot of anticipation for what's coming tomorrow with the cobble
7:33 am
stones. final couple of minutes here, bob, what should we look forward to tomorrow? >> there will be two battle on show. for the stage win, an in credible glory, maybe the most anticipated stage of the tour de france. and then the gc battle. you can lose more time tomorrow on a flat stage with cobbles than you can in the mountain stages if you're a climber. so their team will be on full rid alert all day long. the gc battle, maybe the most critical stage of the whole tour de france tomorrow. >> you have a couple of teams that had maven objectives, the sprint stages. and the cobble stages. so distance yours from other gc rider, you're on a run away team. you'll be minutes ahead of your opposition, especially if the other teams have flats, crashes, everything that will happen tomorrow at at some point in the race. >> growienewegen, three career stage wins at the tour de
7:34 am
france. back to stage nine, we thought it might be cold and wet when the round came around. it will be nice conditions. what trouble can dry and hot bring on the cobbles? >> dust. you see these classic races take place in march and april when it's wet and colder. this will be 85 degrees, sunny, not much wind. it will be dusty. bob knows better than i do. you get the dust in your eyes and it's hard to see. so if you're dan martin, you're chasing through the cars, all those cars are creating dust and havoc. it's so hard to see. it will be like going through wood stock tomorrow. these guys are partying out there. >> likely hooliganism, flags, beer thrown on you, it will be absolutely anarchy. i couldn't agree more. the cobbles make a big difference. the visibility is so low that even if something happens just a few meters in front of you, you
7:35 am
might not be able to see it until you're on top of it. that increases the danger. you extrapolate that throughout the day, the whole peloton, it's a recipe for madness. it will be great television viewing. i would hate to be a gc contender, a teammate of one of those guys. throughout the day, you are all in tomorrow. >> bob came up with cave of suffering about a week ago to describe the riders. hooliganism, though, i think i put the yellow jersey on that term for the best of this tour. join us tonight for tour prime time and tomorrow at 6:00 we're live on nbc sn for coverage of the stage we just talked about, stage nine with the cobbles return in a big way. coming up next on nbc, is wi coming up next on nbc, is wi wilderness vets. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com
