fire and being mauled by a pit bull. s he was attacked bay pit bull that his crews had just rescued. he was rushed to the medical center and transferred to stanford where he underwent reconstructive surgery. officials say he was talking with a 15-year-old girl who had just been rescued from the fire. she had a large male pit bull on a leash. he asked if the dog was okay. >> she said yes and for whatever reason the dog jumped up and attacked the battalion chief. >> he was one of 20 dogs inside that home. two died in the fire and the other 18 are rescued. the sheriffs department has launched an animal neglect

allegations. our handle at nbc bay area. we are learning more about the accident that killed a firefighter battling the ferguson fire burning near yosemite. he was a heavy equipment operator. the second generation firefighter died when his bulldozer rolled over. emergency crews couldn't free him. he posted a tweet announcing a loss with deep sadness. he is survived by his wife and their two young children. the ferguson fire broke out on the west side. so far 1,000 acres have burned. the flames are 5% con tantained. governor jerry brown released this statement reading in part we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and many colleagu colleagues who are mourning a

sudden and tragic loss. it turned deadly for two passengers. it happened near redwood road in alameda county. officers say the driver swerved the avoid a deer on the red and lost control. you can see there the red mazda flipped onto its roof before coming to a stop. there were five people, two women in the backseat, both died. one other person was taken to the hospital. officers say alcohol was not involved in the crash. at least four dogs have been killed by a coyote terrorizing two east bay neighborhoods. it happened in backyards during the past month alone. >> nine-year-old lucy recovering after a coyote attacked her in her own backyard july 6th. he says he was in shock when he looked out the window and saw his jack russell terrier.

a follow up to a story we first reported to you last night at 6:00. a hot pursuit across four california counties. t rjs a follow up. take a look at this. video of police chasing a fire truck that was stolen out in sacramento. the deal ended 85 miles away from where it began. the truck was being used to fight a grass fire near sacramento. officers arrested a man and a woman. both have some injuries. significant damage needs to be fixed before it is put back to use. all of the equipment inside is

okay though. firefighters say the rig is worth $1 million. police are looking for the person who did this through white paint on this mural. the mural depicts santana and the man you can see at the bottom of your screen is the artist who painted the mural. he returned yesterday to fix it. people are in the neighborhood are hoping the surveillance could catch the vandals. thousands are taking over golden gate park for the 32nd annual aids walk. this is video of last year's events. it works to raise money and awareness. since the walk began in 1987 they have raised more than $90 million. wow. let's check in now with a look at our sunday forecast. will it be a good day to head

coast. you'll see around areas west of the golden gate bridge inland mostly sunny skies and temperatures a lot like we had yesterday. mostly mid-to upper 80s. it is around concord to the trivalley. wind speeds will be something we'll have to watch as we get towards 3:00 to 7:00 later this afternoon and early this evening. some of the wind speeds did get close to 30 miles per hour. highs today mostly 80s inland. the seven day forecast will be taking it into the mid-90s. 83 san jose. you'll see numbers mostly in the 80s inland. bay side temperatures around the east bay and low to mid-70s. highs in the upper 70s around belmont. winds out of the west keeping the temperatures quite cool. midday highs in the mid-60s and highs in the low to mid-80s in

the north bay as long as the winds stay going out of the northwest. we'll see high pressure strengthening monday and tuesday. it means valleys probably have a chance of mid-to upper 90s on tuesday. from there it's watching the humidity. notice the clouds here starting to rotate around that ridge of high pressure. thursday and friday we'll see batches of clouds coming on through and like we saw last week humidity will be going up. it looks like the best chances of any real rainfall will be off to the east. friday to saturday is a lot of high cloud cover there. right now here is the futurecast for rainfall. you can see the sierra will see ongoing thundershowers. most of the rainfall totals looks like that will stay in southern california. unfortunately though humidity will be on the rise. thursday and friday starting

first had yesterday morning. three people shot on highway 80 in the east bay. police say so far the witnesses are the victims themselves. it happened around 3:00 saturday morning on eastbound 80. this is in berkeley. chp shut down all of the lanes. officers used flashlights to search the freeways for bullet casings and any evidence. they say the three people who were hit with bullets all got to the hospital on their own. they are waiting for the victims to recover so they could get more information on what happened. so far no arrests have been made. a zoo in new orleans will reopen after a jaguar escaped and killed six animals. it killed four wall paalpakas, u

november 6th ballot... none will be as consequential for californians as proposition welcome back. none will be as consequential. it is to undo the 12 cent per gallon passed by the legislature and signed by jerry brown last november. nbc bay area joining us. all right. so if we leave it and undo it what is at stake? >> a big number. >> yeah. >> california has more than $130 billion of deferred

maintenance of roads and bridges. that number is growing every year. before the hike the state's gasoline tax was last increased. since then what has happened? 10 billion came with cars getting gasoline mileage. in addition to state is another 15% more roads during the same period. add it up. more people, more roads, better mi mileage. that means fewer gasoline tax dollars which mens to maintain our roads. that's why the state legislature passed that included gasoline taxes and it will generate more than $5 billion annually for the next ten years exclusively dedicated to road repairs. >> that's a lot of money and driving in the bay area we need that work. it is a lot of money out of our

pocket. so if it was the first increase to pass in 23 years to tackle this growing problem why is it so controversial? >> okay. there are two answers really. first california has a budget surplus of $18 billion. that is for the recession. they targd state should spend that money. when brown ran for governor in 2010 he promised that he would ask the voters to approve any tax increase before it occur sz. this was passed by the legislature, sign bid the governor without building approval. >> that's not a good look. do the gas tax repeal leaders, the leaders of the repeal have a point here? >> yes and no.

the rainy day funds could go towards road repairs. $18 billion is a long way from $130 billion in deferred maintenance totals. even if the funds were used what happens after the funds are depleted? the gas tax repeal leaders do have a point regarding governor brown's behavior. simply put, he broke his promise. that's simple. id leads to this question. because he broke his promise should the roads continue it in disrepair? worth noting that the average californian pays over $700 year. >> yeah. so you would think this is the better bet. get those roads fixed.

so what can we expect in this battle? >> a brutal one. absolutely. supporters, the one that want to repeal is 2 million raised by the defendants. a republican house speaker paul ryan has contributed $1 million. a house majority kevin mccarthy have given $300,000. republicaned looked at this as an issue. >> believe me, governor brown has promised to raise $25 million, and more than that. most local governments, unions, major businesses are expected to the proposal with big bucks. californians have a big decision, whether to add billions of gas tax dollars

valleys winds are increasing coupled with the dry conditions. we are talking about some of the hilltops. we'll watch that with inland temperatures still near the upper 80s and close to 90. lots of low clouds. you might see more sunshine south of half-moon bay. highs today inland with winds picking up for the afternoon. mostly mid-80s inland. some spots will have a chance of getting close to 90. the trend moving forward high pressure strengthens. we'll see temperatures climbing up over the next couple of afternoons. highs in the low 80s. close to 90 farther south. walnut creek in the 80s. peninsula temperatures ranging from 80 in palo alto.

misty skies. you can see san francisco staying in the mid-60s. a little bit of sunshine and north bay temperatures for today at least looks like 80s but the 90s popping up as early as tomorrow. this high strengthens it looks like tuesday would be the warmest day of the week. we could see mid-to upper 90s inland. the attention turns to tropical moisture. you can see as we get into thursday, friday and saturday a few of that tropical moisture coming up even as we start next weekend. so technically temperatures will be down slightly as the cloud cover increases. humidity probably won't feel much cooler. right now best chance for seeing measurable rain. we'll see a chance of thundershowers actually again today. we'll look for more chances maybe getting closer to us by friday and saturday. temperatures starting to climb up a little bit on tuesday.
