finland after that incredible meeting and press conference with russian president vladimir putin where both men took part in an extraordinary global embrace. mr. trump even taking a swipe and openly questioning his own intelligence agencies as the world looked on in shock. >> nbc lester holt reports from helsinki. >> reporter: it was one of the most extraordinary moments between an american president and a russian leader. their meeting framed by friday's justice department's department agents for election meddling. and the judgment of u.s. intelligence agencies including director of national intelligence director dan coates that russia interfered. president trump asked, who do you believe? president putin or the u.s. intelligence community? his answer? >> people came to me, dan coates and others. they said they think it's russia. i have president putin. he just said it's not russia. i will say this. i don't see any reason why it

would be. >> and the president complimenting an offer from putin. instead of turning over the indicted russian agents, russian officials would question the agents themselves with special counsel bob mueller present. >> i have great confidence in my intelligence people, but i will tell you that president putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. and what he did is an incredible offer. he offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the 12 people. i think that's an incredible offer. >> reporter: the president's own intelligence chief dan coates shot back with a rare rebuke. we have been clear in our assessment of russian meddling in the 2016 election, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security. critics like former obama cia director john brennan unleashing. >> it's something that is a disgrace and that all americans

should be ashamed of that performance of somebody who holds the title of president of the united states. >> reporter: election meddling among the flash points that have helped sink u.s./russia relations. others include russia's illegal occupation of crimea and its backing of the syrian regime that used chemical weapons. president trump blaming tensions on the u.s. and the mueller investigation. tweeting, our relationship with russia has never been worse thanks to many years of u.s. foolishness and stupidity, and now the rigged witch hunt. asked does he think putin bears any responsibility. >> yes, i do. i hold both countries responsible. i think that the united states has been foolish. i think that the probe is a disaster for our country. i think it's kept us apart. it's kept us separated. there was no collusion at all. everybody knows it. people are being brought out to the fore.

the commander in chief for the summit. let's go to nbc's tracie potts from capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there was strong criticism from both sides here. it's notable how many republicans came out and criticized the president's performance. newt gingrich said it was the most serious mistake of his presidency. we also heard from senator john mccain calling this one of the most disgraceful performances by an american president in memory. lots of lawmakers calling out the president on what he said standing next to russian president vladimir putin. listen. >> i did not think this was a good moment for our country. >> his behavior is so inexplicable and so against the interests of the united states, so against what all of his advisors would tell him, that americans are scratching their head and saying, if that's not the explanation that putin has something on it, what is it? what the heck could it be?

>> russia meddled in it, we should do everything we can to hold them accountable. >> i am astounded. the president seems to be acting in the interest of vladimir putin. >> some of my colleagues' heads aren't spinning after this morning's press conference, time will tell. >> reporter: and some of his colleagues are calling on congress to pass a resolution supporting the russia investigation. frances? >> tracie, thank you. >> a russian grad student in the u.s. is facing charges this morning accused of infiltrating american organizations to push moscow's agenda. maria butina appeared in court and according to an fbi affidavit, she developed relationships with conservative politicians and the nra to establish a back channel for russian government interests. she previously served as a special assistant to a kremlin official. the 29-year-old's lawyers say she is not a foreign agent and has offered to cooperate with investigators. >> it was gadgets and glitches

galores as amazon kicked off one of the biggest shopping days of the year, amazon prime day. as shoppers tried to take advantage of the sales, the site crashed. the app and site are back up and running. it could threaten the estimated $37 billion they are expecting to rake in. jo ling kent tells us how competitors are cashing in on the chaos. >> reporter: a.mazon not quite primed for its say of sales. crashing just minutes into his 36 hours of deep discounts. we got exclusive access into amazon's prime day war room earlier this month where they said everything was under control. >> this is like our super bowl. >> reporter: but instead of products, people saw apology puppies. shoppers outraged about the glitch pointing out the company had a year to prep. some glad they're saving money. amazon saying they're working to resolve the issue quickly. the slow start could threaten the estimated $3.6 billion.

howard hallings worth. miranda tries to reverse towards officers. he is shot and killed while munoz runs away trying to hide on school property where he is eventually caught and arrested. assistant sheriff tim kelly. >> when you look at this video it paints a clear picture of what those officers were dealing with that day. in my opinion, they showed a level of bravery, professionalism, heroics that we come to expect from our officers. >> reporter: police say miranda and munoz were well armed and wanted in connection with a homicide that had occurred just two hours before the pursuit. a man shot and killed at a car wash at eastern and searles. according to kelly, metro policy allows officers to pursue, even fire at fleeing suspects if there is imminent danger to others. >> the officer could have backed off, but he didn't. he stuck with that individual, knowing what type of individual he was dealing with.

filing from the americans with civil liberties union. giving them little time to review their legal options for asylum. also limits the organization's ability to represent them. judge dana halted those proceedings for a week giving the government's attorneys time to respond. the judge is overseeing the government's efforts to reunite more than 2,500 migrant children with their families giving the feds a july 26 deadline to complete those reunifications. >> a florida mother is coming on nabisco to change its packaging after her daughter died from eating a cookie. she had a serious peanut allergy. last month she went into anaphylactic shock after eating a chips ahoy cookie with peanut butter. they launched gofundme to raise money for funeral costs. her mother posted on facebook to warn other parents. it includes this picture of the two products with similar packaging.

one with peanut butter and one without. the post has since gone viral. nabisco parent company released a statement saying in part, quote, we take allergies very seriously and that all our products are clearly labelled. >> shocking, terrifying. >> it's small up there, you know, with the peanut butter. easy to miss. >> well, france is continuing the party over there after their big win on sunday against croatia. for the third day in a row, pride and elation poured into the streets in paris. there they are, the french team. they took their victory lap where they were greeted by hundreds of thousands of fans that were there to welcome home the golden trophy. also receiving a hero's welcome, nearly 1300 miles away, croatia returned home to a crowd of more than 200,000 people. croatia has a population of around 4 1/2 million people, making them one of the smallest countries ever to play in a world cup final and particularly the second smallest ever. what an incredible feat. >> they deserved that
