>> reporter: john mccain blasting it as one of the most disgraceful performances by any american public in memory. president obama's cia director john brennan branding mr. trump's performance treasonous, the president even stunning his own aides siding with an adversary over his own intelligence experts. >> they said it's russia. president putin just said it's not russia. i'll say this, i don't see any reason why it would be. >> reporter: drawing a quick rebuke electric dan coats, director of national intelligence delivered without white house approval. we've been clear of our assessments of russian meddling in the 2016 election and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security. many republicans warning the president's comments will embolden putin to interfere again in future elections. >> i do feel that we have both made some mistakes. i think that the probe is a disaster for our country. i think it's kept us apart, kept

us separated. >> reporter: putin's key revelation admitting he wanted trump to win bringing he'd bring u.s.-russian relationship back to normal. privately, here, multiple aides said the president ignored his advisers urging him to take a tougher stand with putin for all the backlash especially among republicans, the real question, will there be any action. so far what's notable many of those republican lawmakers drawing a distinction criticizing the president's position but not criticizing him personally. savannah. >> all right, peter alexander, thank you so much. let's bring in former cia director john brennan. he's worked for six u.s. presidents, both republican and democrat, and is now nbc national security expert. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. >> you had very strong words. you said this is treasonous. when i look at the press conference and see what happened with president trump, i go back to a child of the '80s when president trump stood up to mikhail gorbachev and stood up

to russia. here was an opportunity where the president was given that chance and didn't take america's side. is that how you see it? >> yes, he was given a chance to the world stage to say russia interfered in our election and to say it's intolerable and the shall not happen again. he didn't. he sided with mr. putin. >> he also blamed the u.s. >> he asked questions, what do you hold russia accountable for? right away, he pivoted back to hillary clinton and the election. he continued to criticizes americans and our intelligence community. i mean, that's outrageous. >> what does do to vladimir putin? he looked like a guy who just had a very satisfying lunch. he was smiling, he was relaxed, jovial. the foreign minister said it was better super this meeting.

what does that do for russia? >> well, i think it just emboldens russia to do what he's doing for a long time, try to influence other countries. we have only seen the press conference. we didn't see mr. trump's performance in the meeting one-on-one. for two hours, what did president trump talk to mr. putin about? i have no idea. i'm certainly concerned about what might have been discussed there, shared. did he discuss about u.s. intelligence capabilities, did he further denigrate the fbi and others? when i use nothing short of treasonous i say aiding and abetting, giving comfort to the enemy. mr. trump had the opportunity to say clearly to the american people and countries around the world and mr. putin, do not do this again or there will be consequences, and he failed to meet even the minimum standards of that. >> what about him saying, i talked to putin -- i've heard what our intelligence agents say.

i've talked to putin and his denials were really strong. >> yes, i've said publicly the russians feign sincerity better than anyone i know. putin's a trained intelligence officer. his kgb past is coming forward. i'm sure he gave a very persuasive effort why they wouldn't do it. mr. trump said i don't know why they would do it. come on. are you not reading your intelligence papers, presidents daily brief, listening to dan coats. thankfully, the director of intelligence stood up and stood behind the men and women of the intelligence community. >> the president feels to acknowledge russia's involvement and attempts to meddle in the election is tantamount to saying, i wasn't elected legitimately? don't you think that's what's motivating all this. >> he's conflating a lot of things. he's conflating charges of collusion. unfortunately he received overt and public collusion between mr.

trump and president putin of russia. i think he's very concerned if he gives any credence to the intelligence community assessment it undermines his legitimacy. his paranoia, his narcissism just comes out. that's why he lashes out and continues to focus on his election and how he won. >> i mentioned you worked in intelligence under six presidents. what did you think when you saw president putin's denial of whether he had any compromising information on president trump? >> it's what i've heard from russian officials over the years, which is they deny, deny, deny. that's fine. he's going to do that. he's not going to acknowledge publicly what he did. but that doesn't mean mr. trump shouldn't hold him to account and say, yes, you did. we need to move on. we need to have better relations between moscow and washington, and i very much hope that we're going to get there. but we can't give putin a pass, whether it's interference in the election, on crimea or other things. that's what mr. trump's doing. that's why outrage on both sides

of the aisle is so vehement. >> do you think there should be resignations? >> i think so. people are going to decide to leave the republican party. he's the titular head of the republican party. if this is what the republican party is, it's not the party of ronald reagan and george bush and others who throughout the years really did everything possible to keep this country strong and safe. when i was listening to mr. trump's press conference, the words of ronald reagan, bring down that wall, mr. gosh -- gorbachev, bring down that wall, were ringing in my ears. i'm sure he was rolling over in his grave. >> former cia director john brennan. thank you for your time. appreciate it. >> a closer look at where the russia investigation stands. pete, a lot of people are confused about the nut of this whole thing, the mueller investigation. just bring us up to date on what we know so far about what's going on with that. >> to be clear, nothing in the

mueller indictments said it affected the outcome of the election. nor have assessments of the intelligence committee questioned the legitimacy of president trump's victory. what you have in the mueller charges, and in intel community assessments, they agree russia wanted to interfere in the election. most of them concluded the goal was to hurt hillary clinton and help donald trump. what mueller's team accusing the officers of doing, hacking into computers, leaking stolen e-mails to undermine the clinton campaign and in another case orchestrating social media in the u.s. using fake sites to attack candidates, mainly clinton, hoda. >> but pete, just to follow up. the investigation for all of its breadth is not looking into whether or not the russian meddling actually affected the election will that's not what they are looking into. >> that's not mueller's homework assignment. what he's to answer is the big question remaining, did anybody in the u.s. knowingly help the russians interfere in the election?

two separate points. legitimacy of his election is one thing, the actions of russians is another. so far none of the charges filed by mueller have made that allegations of help in the u.s. and there are signs that his investigation is nearing its final stages. >> all right. pete williams in washington. pete, thank you. >> thank you, pete. there's much more to get to including breaking news in texas. officials arresting a suspected serial killer. gabe gutierrez has the latest for us. gabe, good morning. >> good morning. just short time ago, a major break in this case, a suspected serial killer is in custody. investigators say he was circling the area with a pistol looking for his next victim. this morning, the manhunt is over. tweeted out, rodriguez is in police custody. >> this morning, he was taken into custody.

>> reporter: it comes after a weeklong crime spree. houston-area police trying to track down 46-year-old jose rodriguez calling him a possible serial killer. investigators say he was on parole and cut off his tracking monitor a few days ago. >> we're convinced that this man is extremely dangerous. we're convinced that he has absolutely no regard for the sanctity of life. >> reporter: a person of interest in a recent violent crime spree including three murders and an attempted murder and a home invasion. >> serious concerns that this individual will strike again and we all need to be vigilant, no matter the circumstances. >> reporter: on monday afternoon, a mattress employee was shot and killed. his son described their dad as funny and hearworking. they're devastated by the loss. >> we're holding each other up. >> reporter: this after the

death of 28-year-old barrow worker at another mattress store. and pamela johnson who police found dead in her home on friday. authorities releasing this surveillance video believing to show rodriguez walking through a mall a day after johnson's body was found. johnson's stolen car was later found in the mall's parking lot. >> if he's hearing this, we know who you are and you can come and turn yourself in. you'll be much better off. >> reporter: investigators still don't have a motive yet. the houston area overnight was on high alert. the breaking news, a suspect is now in custody after that brief police pursuit. there were no injuries during that chase. but still, a lot of questions at this point.avannah. >> all right, gabe, thank you. time for our first check of the weather.

today is tuesday, july 17th, 2018. >> a sweet father/son moment. >> good moment. for more than two months, kilauea volcano has been erupting on the big island. now the hot lava is blamed for a freak accident that injured two dozen tourists are a boat. we have nbc correspondent miguel almaguer in los angeles. >> reporter: good morning. kilauea will continue to explode into the summer. this is the first time we hear of a case of people at sea hurt because of the volcano's incredible power. this is the moment of fire ball exploded out of the sea. showering the nearby tour boat with flaming rocks. the blast is nerve rattling as the screams of hterror from the passengers on board.

[ screaming ] >> we could hear the rocks hit the boat. people yelling. >> reporter: the phenomenon known as lava bomb occurs when molten rock explodes in fragments after coming in contact with cold ocean water. >> we all thought we could die here. >> reporter: steve moynahan was on the body when the fiery rocks rained down. >> we knew it was lava. we did not know if it would sink the boat or catch it on fire. there w there was red hot lava all over the boat. >> reporter: there was a gaping hole in the boat. 23 passengers were treated for injuries. some serious. >> primarily soft tissue injuries. one obvious femur fracture. minor burns. >> reporter: lava from kilauea

has been flowing for more than two months. we have seen first hand just how explosive the volcano can be. it is a beautiful and yet incredibly scary sight behind me. with at least 700 homes damaged or destroyed, this morning, lava is still pouring from fissures or cracks in the ground. the new island of lava off the coast has begun to form drawing tourists who want to get close to the action. >> i definitely would not tell other people not to go do it because of this because this is probably a once in a lifetime happening. >> reporter: a once in a lifetime experience in more ways than one. despite the power, there have not been reports of fatalities of the volcano which has now been erupting since may. back to you. >> thank you, miguel.

we're back 7:40 with a 30 year fight for justice for a little girl murdered back in 1988. >> ground breaking technology is now being used to finally nab a suspect after all these years. nbc senior national correspondent kate snow is here with this story. >> good morning. >> good morning, guys. you know those tests popular, ancestry, 23andme. a few months ago they started offering a service that looks at dna of crime suspects and compares it to publicly available results from all those dna tests people are taking. and that was just the break fort wayne, indiana, police needed. for three decades the death of 8-year-old april tinsley has baffled them but they feel they

have solved the mystery. the 59-year-old killer arrested sunday has been linked to the sinister crime through the latest dna technology. >> she just turned eight weeks old and two weeks later she was gone. >> for tinsley's mother janet, it's the news she's been anxiously awaiting 30 years. >> thinking to your self, is it ever going to come to an end. >> april tinsley was a tomboy who loved hot wheels. three days after her disappearance in 1988, her body was found in a ditch. according to police she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. over the years her killer appeared to taunt authorities skraulg on the barn in 1990 that he killed tinsley and would again. putting notes on girls bicycles with other clues containing his dna. three years ago we visited the lab when they had first begun helping police examine dna for the case.

researchers moore started doing something new. she took the genetic profile and compared it to public database from genealogy, the kind they get from 23andme or ancestry.com looking for second and third cousins. >> the matches will often start out in a completely different state and then one branch will lead me right back to within 25 miles or so of the crime scene. >> she searched for descendants related to the suspected killer, created family tree going back in history and moved it forward to find the right present day branch. >> in the tinsley case, that process resulted in us being able to narrow it down to two brothers. it hale had to be one or the other, because they were carrying the right mix of dna from ancestors to fit that profile. >> investigators then collected several items from miller's home which contained his dna. when those samples matched the ones collected in the past, detectives made their move. a court affidavit saying miller

fired. the passenger killed. the two men were suspects from a homicide earlier in the day. this morning, a warning for farnts with children with food allergies. tragically it she missed a warning sign. stephanie gosk with this. steph. >> it's an incredibly sad story. her mother is trying to increase awareness with package labeling having what she calls screaming warnings. 15-year-old alex irks never saw the warning find before she bit into a chips ahoy. she had a severe peanut allergy. the package was open. according to her mother kelly she didn't see the reese's logo indicating peanuts before grabbing a cookie. kelly writes on her page, she

started feeling tingling in her mouth and came home. she said her condition rapidly deteriated. she was given two epipen shots but went into shock. within 90 minutes she stopped breathing. she writes she diligently taught her what to in guest. she knew her limits and was aware of familiar packaging. she knew what safe was. now the grieving mother has an urgent warning for other parents. the company has different colored packaging to indicate chunky, chewey or regular but no screaming warnings about such a fatal ingredient to many people, especially children. the packages of chewy chips ahoy with peanuts and without do look very similar, both the same color and graphic layout. the most visible difference is reese's logo and peanut butter cups on the front, which can be hidden if the flap is open. the words peanut butter do appear in some form on every side of the package including in the ingredients in small type.

nabisco's parent company issued a statement writing in part, we were very saddened to hear about this situation. we take allergies very seriously and all of our products are clearly labeled on the information panel of the packaging for the major food allergens in the u.s. we always encourage consumers to read the packaging labeling. allergists say kids need to pay close attention. kelly stafford says her heart is broken over the loss but wants to spread awareness so this horrible mistake doesn't happen again. so far kelly stafford's post has been shared almost 70,000 times. it does look like through facebook she's getting the word out to some degree, guys. >> that's the saddest thing. >> it's an awful story. >> i hope it helps people. >> thank you. hawaii's kilauea volcano back in the news after a lava bomb shattered a tour boat with flaming rocks. fragments went right through the

vinegar. we've got beautiful sesame oil, peanut oil, some lemon juice, some sugar, salt, pepper, some ginger, garlic, whisk them all together. this sets up even better once you put it in the frig. >> brings out flavors of cole slaw. >> put that together, pour it in and mix. >> good old mix. >> you've got a little green apple to go in there, too. i love that, sweet and tart. >> a little cilantro, put it all together and it's a beautiful thing. now let's move to the burger. >> beautiful turkey meat and pork. ginger scallion. mix it all together. >> the beautiful thing, a lot of times folks in our lives want us to eat more healthy. you've got turkey but you hide the pork in there, it's the same color. they have no idea. >> pork has flavor and moisture and also leaner than most ground beef and even chicken thighs.

it's healthy, too. >> making the patty, your fastidious about the edges. why. >> you have to make sure they are smooth because if they broken on the grill, they will fall apart and crumble. >> what do our tasters think? >> delicious. >> cooking on the grill now. >> how long each side for your turkey pork. >> more about the temp, probably a burger 4 ounces, this thick, two to three minutes a side. once you start to see it bubble on the top, a good time to flip. see the char. that's good flavor there. >> for traditional i like brisket but you've kicked it up a notch. >> yes, sir. a brisket short rib biggeurger. >> this our famous pig beach burger we do. >> on the kiwanis canal, it's spectacular. >> so much fun there, we love having you guys. first thing we want to do season with salt and pepper first. very important.

get all that flavor, delicious meat there. put it on the grill. you want it super, super hot. with a burger this thin, it's only a minute, minute and a half each side. you want it to be super hot to get a good char on the one side to bring out the flavor. >> you say the burger will tell you when to flip it. >> it will tell you when to flip. >> if it's stuck and not moving it's not ready. give it another minute. when you see juices bubble up on the top side that's a great sign. flip, nice toss, back on the grill. at this point you put a piece of cheese on it. >> what kind of cheese to you like? >> simple white american cheese, perfect for burger, classic bugger. by the time it's melted on the burger it's ready to come off and we're ready to assemble it. >> what's the mistake people make with burgers. >> they don't let them rest enough. after it's off the grill, it's important to let them sit for a minute so juices don't sog out your bun. bread to meat ratio is important. if you don't give it enough time it will get your burger soggy. the way we build our burgers at

a man accused of using his good morning. it's 8:56. i'm marcus washington. a man accused of using his ride share gig as a front to sexually assault women is due in court today. authorities say the san mateo man last week they arrested 37-year-old orlando lonzo. investigators say he would wait outside of bars targeting women looking for their ride share cars. he's accused in four violent
