"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm phillip mena. >> good to be with you, i'm frances rivera. breaking news overnight out of toronto, chaos after a gunman opened fire in a busy downtown area of toronto. one woman was killed and 13 more were injured, including a young girl under 10 years old, who's in critical condition. the gunman stormed this popular neighborhood of greek town about 10:00 p.m. with many people out and about in the area full of restaurants and shops. the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene following an exchange with police. with no clear motive at the time, police are pleading with the public for any tips and information. they have not ruled out terrorism. back in the u.s., one person was killed and another injured when a gunman opened fire at a mormon church in nevada.

more than 50 people were inside at the time. the suspect then walked home, where he surrendered to police. police believe he targeted one person, not the church. for the first time we're hearing from the 70-year-old woman who says she was one of the hostages held captive during the deadly three-hour standoff in an l.a. trader joe's store. police are continuing to investigate what prompted the gunman to shoot his own grandmother before holding dozens hostage at a grocery store. officials say atkins is now being held on $2 million bond and faces possible murder charges. nbc's steve paterson tells us more. >> frances, that trader joe's behind me remains closed as workers come to grips with the horror of what happened this weekend. meanwhile, a 70-year-old woman who claims to be the first hostage relet, for the first ti what happened inside during the crisis. >> this is the suspect here. >> reporter: this man at the

>> reporter: steven paul is a st. louis-area inspector. last year the current owners of the ride the ducks company hired him to inspect the vessels as they prepared to buy the business. in his report, he says he warned them that design flaws made the boats more susceptible to sinking and harder to escape in an emergency. >> one issue is the canopy on the ducks, as well as the curtains that come down the sides, when the curtains are down, there's no way for the people to escape. it becomes a people catcher. >> reporter: the owner of the duck boat company insists safety is their number one priority. now investigators are hoping surveillance video recovered from the boat will shed more light into what happened. >> we have some fairly sophisticated means to dry them out, retrieve the data that's on there, before we have a chance to see what's on the video. >> reporter: clues in the search for answers as loved ones seek to understand what what they we through in those last few minutes, it is horrific. guard said salvage operations are set to begin today at 9:00 a.m. to
