this morning - firefighters continue to fight a fire - burning in the hills above milpitas. at last check, the fire has charred more than 300 acres. it broke out shortly after one sunday afternoon. more than 100 firefighters, have been able to contain roughly 40 percent of it. one structure is destroyed... about ten others are threatened. two ranches on weller road, are

evacuated. today in the bay )s thom jensen is there right now - getting the latest on this fire - he )ll join us live -- coming up at 5-30. happening today: firefighters join family and friends .. for a final farewell to the firefighter who died battling the ferguson fire near yosemite. the service will be held in modesto .. for 36-year-old braden varney. he died operating a bulldozer on the fire )s front lines. varney was married with two young children. the fire meanwhile is still burning mostly out of control. firefighters say it )s only abot 6-percent contained. it )s burned more than 32-thousand acres. u-s interior secretary ryan zinke visited the command center yesterday. more than 3-thousand firefighters are now working to battle the fire - which has been burning for 9 days.

this is video - new overnight - of the shooting rampage targeting two toronto restaurants last night. a neighbor filmed it from above. 14 people were hit by gunfire. one woman died .. a 9-year-old girl is in critical condition. the shooter died at the scene. one witness says it was hard putting together what was happening. police say the gunman was dressed in black .. firing shots from the sidewalk in the city )s greektown district. witnesses say he shot 20 to 30 rounds. police are not ruling out terrorism. this morning... an east bay father flew to the midwest... to search for his missing daughter. this story is gaining national attention. 20-year-old "mollie tibbetts" grew up in oakland.

she goes to the university of iowa. nobody )s seen her since wednesday night.... when she went out for a run. she lives in a small town between des moines and cedar rapids. her mom... talked to us on the phone last night. mollie )s father lives in lafayette... and works in san francisco. happening today - alameda county leaders will go over a plan to assist religious groups in helping provide affordable housing. supervisors will discuss allocating 750-thousand dollars for "the capacity building program." it involves community and faith-based organizations .. working to develop new housing options. the full board is expected to debate the plan august 7th .. and it may be launched by this november. tonight in sonoma... the city council will discuss how to move forward with recreational marijuana right now, there are no dispensaries within the city limits.

council members are considering several options... including putting a measure on the november ballot. by the way - california voters legalized recreational pot nearly two years ago. new this morning - a new record at berkeley. the campus paper reports: the university raised over 569- million dollars last school year. that )s the most ever. the money comes from donations , grants, and pledges... and comes from about 66-thousand donors. the paper says the largest share goes to program support. another big portion goes to research. coming up on today in the bay-- nbc bay area responds... but first happening now.. a new muni line is rising in costs. the s-f examiner is reporting the "mission bay loop project" is going up more than a million dollars.

the project will bolster service for warriors and giants games. the total cost around 10 milion dollars. plus -- facebook looking to launch it )s own satellite network. "wired" says the social media network wants to connect people to the internet using the low orbit satellites. more news after the break.
