happening today - the northern california man suing the manufacturers of "roundup" - claiming it gave him cancer... takes the stand. we )ve been covering this case for years. in his lawsuit against monsanto... dewayne johnson alleges the active ingredient in the popular weed killer - caused his non-hodgkin )s lymphoma. the debate over the potential that roundup causes cancer has been going on for decades. the f-d-a says it probably does (not ( cause cancer... but the world health organization says it probably (does. ( new video this morning... ...of the memorial growing outside a los angeles trader joes. this is where one worker was shot and killed during a tense

hostage standoff saturday. trader joe )s says the store wil be closed indefinitely .. to give workers the chance to grieve .. and to process what happened. new details are emerging about the chaos before and during that standoff .. along with the worker who died. relatives say 27-year-old "mely corado" was a trader joe )s store manager. police say she was shot when the suspect crashed his car outside the store - and exchanged gunfire with officers during a chase. the gunman then went into the store. one customer says everyone dove for cover. the suspect surrendered the suspect surrendered some 3 hours later and freed the nearly 50 people held hostage. police say he had already shot two women including his grandmother .. at his south los angeles home. happening today - crews plan to recover the duck boat which sank during a storm last thursday in branson missouri - killing 17 people. the coast guard will oversee the

operation. mourners gathered last night at a chapel in branson to remember the victims. the service included a message for victims ) friends and families .. and words from branson )s mayor. investigators are now looking at the safety of the boat .. and why it was on the water at the time a thunderstorm warning was posted for the area. at the peak of the storm waves were 6 feet high with winds topping 70 miles per hour. san francisco leaders will reportedly weigh two separate measures this week .. that may have a long term impact on massage parlors. one measure would crack down on businesses that illegally operate as brothels. according to the examiner .. supervisors will vote on that plan tomorrow. today .. the examiner reports a committee will debate lifting a ban on massage parlors for the union street commercial corridor.

with mayor london breed about an incident he believes was racial profiling. maybe you didn )t catch the stoy when it gained traction over the weekend. the business owner - victor stevenson - recently opened this lemonade shop in the mission district. he says last tuesday .. he was standing in front of his store trying to work on his security system. that )s when police approached him. he says a neighbor initially called police .. and that he had to open the door with his keys to prove it was his store. he )s hoping to raise enough attention .. to spark a change in policies. happening today - a confirmation vote for a new secretary of veterans affairs. the senate is set to consider )robert wilkie )s ) nomination this

afternoon. wilkie earned high praise from most members of the veterans ) affairs committee in hearings last month, including several democrats. a follow up now.... "the pathway home" at the yountville veterans hospital will (not ( re-open. "the pathway home" stayed closed after the deadly shooting there in march. and now the non-profit says it will end its lease next month. back in march, an army vetern who had been treated for p-t- s-d at the pathway home - shot and killed three workers. the non-profit treated more than 500 veterans since it was founded a decade ago. some sad news for sports fans... former raiders head coach tony sparano died unexpectedly. he was only 56 years old. no word yet on the cause of death. he was working for the minnesota vikings at that team )s offensive coordinator. he was the intermin head coach in oakland in 20-14. still ahead and new this morning...

a live look at the macarthur bart station - which is open this morning despite a deadly double stabbing there last night that appears to be random. this is video from overnight .. when there was a large police prescence. investigators say a man stabbed two women. one of the women died. there )s no update on the other victim. police say the two were stabbed as they exited the station .. and they had been riding a richmond train. the father of one of the victims was at the station before it opened this morning. behind him cameras picked up the sound of grieving relatives.

happening today: firefighters join family and friends .. for a final farewell to the firefighter who died battling the ferguson fire near yosemite. the service will be held in modesto .. for 36-year-old braden varney. he died operating a bulldozer on the fire )s front lines. varney was married with two young children. the fire meanwhile is still burning mostly out of control. firefighters say it )s only abot 6-percent contained. it )s burned more than 32-thousand acres. u-s interior secretary ryan zinke visited the command center yesterday. more than 3-thousand firefighters are now working to battle the fire - which has been burning for 9 days. in just hours... the )secretary of state ) and )secretary of defense ) will be on stanford )s campus. so will protesters. they say it )s an important opportunity... to make themselves heard.

restaurants last night. we )ve just learned a second person has died. a neighbor filmed it from above. 14 people were hit by gunfire. the shooter died at the scene. one witness says it was hard putting together what was happening. police say the gunman was dressed in black .. firing shots from the sidewalk in the city )s greektown district. witnesses say he shot 20 to 30 rounds. police are not ruling out terrorism. this morning... an east bay father flew to the midwest... to search for his missing daughter. this story is gaining national attention. 20-year-old "mollie tibbetts" grew up in oakland. she goes to the university of iowa. nobody )s seen her since wednesday night.... when she went out for a run. she lives in a small town

between des moines and cedar rapids. her mom... talked to us on the phone last night. mollie )s father lives in lafayette... and works in san francisco. happening today - alameda county leaders will go over a plan to assist religious groups in helping provide affordable housing. supervisors will discuss allocating 750-thousand dollars for "the capacity building program." it involves community and faith-based organizations .. working to develop new housing options. the full board is expected to debate the plan august 7th .. and it may be launched by this november. new this morning - a new record at berkeley. the campus paper reports: the university raised over 569- million dollars last school year. that )s the most ever. the money comes from donations , grants, and pledges... and comes from about 66-thousand donors.

the paper says the largest share goes to program support. another big portion goes to research. tesla ceo elon musk has one less issue hanging over his head this morning: the "stink" surrounding a farting unicorn. this story first started in february. that )s when musk tweeted a phoo of a mug made by a colorado artist .. showing gas from the unicorn powering a car. he was flattered about it then. but he became upset when musk kept using the image in tesla documents. musk tweeted over the weekend - the issue is now resolved. the artist says it )s an agreement everyone can feel some - um.... )relief ) about.

mike traffic tease how would you feel about being recorded while you are in the backseat? a ride share driver is suspended after its discovered he was recording and livestreaming passengers. 32-year-old "jason gargac" recorded hundreds of st. louis riders without their permission while he was driving. gargac posted the videos to "twitch" -- where people would

comment on the videos and even rate passengers. more troubling -- this might not be illegal as missouri is a "one-party" record state -- that means a person doesn )t have to give permission to be recorded. both lyft and uber have responded saying the recording is not allowed by their guidelines. happening today - two men are scheduled to enter a plea .. in the case of a kidnapping and sexual assault. authorities say started when the victim believed she was getting into a rideshare car. it happened in april. authorities say the suspects took the victim from san francisco to sonoma county .. where she was beaten and assaulted. that )s also where she managed o escape. authorities arrested the two suspects in june. the future of your commute is up for a vote today. at 10:30 the u-s senate is going to consider a new bill. the a-v start act would set driverless car policy for the next decades -- that includes testing and regulations.

there )s been several deaths so far caused by driverless cars. people of martinez will get a chance to vote on whether they want to pay more to shop. the city is considering a half-cent sales tax for the november ballot. it would raise about 3 million dollars every year. the city council is holding a public meeting tonight at city hall at 7pm. if approved for the ballot -- only 51 percent of voters need to say yes for it to pass. new this morning - there )s about to be a transgender superhero. "nicole maines" is joining the cast of )supergirl. ) producers describe her character as a "soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others." this isn )t her first time in te headlines... she gained national attention for her battle against her school district over her right to use the girls) bathroom - back in 2014. she won the case. happening now - the corpse flower at the san francisco conservatory of flowers is now blooming. this is a live look at the plant.

tougher-- and employers are re-examining which skills matter most to them. a new workforce preparedness study from mcdonald )s finds that it )s important to develop soft skills-- like customer service, teamwork, and

responsibility. the study says these skills are more important than computer programming or even accounting at the beginning of a career. mcdonald )s is going to look at ways to develop new tools for employees-- which lead to career advancement opportunities. new video this morning... showing papa johns signs being removed at the )university of louisville. ) the company sponsors the football stadium on campus. the school decided to rebrand the stadium... after the company )s founder admitted to using the n-word during a conference call about racial sensitivity. your gym membership could end up being a tax break. congressional lawmakers recently advanced a bill giving favorable tax treatment to things like exercises classes and workouts. if passed-- gym memberships and other exercise costs could qualify as medical expenses for tax purposes. but-- taxpayers would have to itemize their deductions. the tax break would be limited to 500-dollars for individuals

and one-thousand dollars for heads of households and couples. it )s unclear when the measure could become law. new this morning-- patients facing cancer want to know how the disease will affect their health and their wallet. a new university of michigan study looked at more than two- thousand breast cancer patients. many women felt their doctors did not address the financial impact of cancer treatments. in fact-- three quarters of those who worried about money said their doctors did not help. experts say doctors need to do a better job of dicussing the impact of the disease on employment and finances. new this morning-- a lot of people are turning to "gluten-free" foods as a healthier option-- but are gluten-free foods targeted at kids actually better for them? a new study from the university of calgary in canada looked at nutritional content in gluten free products. they were (not ( nutritionally better when compared to similar foods with gluten. in fact-- 80-percent of gluten-free foods advertised for kids had higher sugar levels and many had less protein.

it doesn )t mean they (can )t e healthy-- but experts say parents should read labels carefully. a traffic alert in the north bay this morning-- santa rosa )s annual )slurry seal ) project gets underway today and runs through next thursday. every year the city re-seals about two and a half million square feet of streets. they pick the streets based on the condition of the pavement-- so you might see some road closures during the project. city workers say it )s a cost- effective preventative measure, designed to make roads last longer. we )re getting a look at the mascots for the tokoy 2020 olympic and paralympic games. they were introduced at a ceremony in downtown tokyo over the weekend. school children across japan selected the designs. organizers say the futuristic characters combine tradition and innovation. the tokyo olympics run from july 24th to august ninth in 2020-- right here on nbc bay area.
