the tape shows them discussing a potential payment. this morning, the president tweeting, what kind of lawyer would tape a clint? so sad! is this a first, never heard of it before? why was the tape so abruptly terminated while i was presumably saying positive things. the bombshell recording released overnight on cnn captures donald trump talking to his personal attorney michael cohen about how they could buy the rights to "playboy" model karen mcdougal's story of an alleged long-running affair with mr. trump. an affair the white house denies. >> when it comes time to the financing -- >> what financing? >> we'll have to pay. >> reporter: cohen's attorney lanny davis said the the secret recording was made two months before the 2016 election. cohen is heard telling mr. trump he wants to set up a company to handle the matter.

buy the rights to mcdougal's story despite his team insisting otherwise. overnight, his attorney rudy giuliani shows nothing on the tape shows the president knew about the payment in advance. for months, debate has swirled. it indicates that he's taking a far more aggressive approach. >> nicolle wallace. let's start where the president left off. he's telling supporters yesterday what you see and what you hear isn't what's happening in reality. now we have a tape. stated simply, what does this tape show? >> we live in this political climate where there's a lot of news but not a lot of revelations. the significance of the tape is the revelations that we now have. one, donald trump was deeply involved in all the intricacies of the payment of hush money with women with whom he had had alleged sexual relationships. karen mcdougal is one of them. two, the idea that he is not in

trouble is knocked down by the idea that he's now telling his supporters -- we view his supporters as, we can shoot someone on fifth avenue and they won't go anywhere. donald trump seems to be worried that supporters might go somewhere if they see the truth, if they learn the truth, turn on the tv and watch the news. he's telling people not to believe what they see with their own eyes, not to believe what hear with their own ears. that's always trouble. number three, they know they have legal problems. there are campaign violations made pretty clear by the timing of this conversation. john edwards who was the vice presidential nominee on the democratic side a few years back, got in trouble for doing less and much farther away from an election day. >> if any other presidential candidate had been in our headline this morning, if it wasn't president trump, president bush or president obama, it would be a huge backlash. but again, with a lot of his supporters, these revelations maybe don't matter. maybe it is a shrug of the shoulder. >> well, that's for them to
