welcome to thursday morning. let's take a peek outside. beautiful. can you make it out? golden gate bridge. you kind of can, right? we'll check the fog near the coastline and the heat coming today. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. let's start with kari, kind of foggy. >> still all clear for the south bay, and it starts out warmer with low 60s as you head out the door. let's go to campbell and check out the temperatures for the rest of the day, at least for early afternoon, we're going to reach into the low 80s and it will be a little cooler in some

spots. for parts of the south county, we're still heading to the mid 90s. morgan hill, 93. for the east bay, up to 99 today in antioch. we'll look at all of our microclimates coming up. mike, you're starting with a bridge update. >> earlier this morning, 1:00 in the morning, had a crash. this is westbound. you'll see cars going westbound. that's fine. it's eastbound, getting away from the san rafael side, to richmond, you watch, and hopefully as i talk, we'll see tail lights. we got word from chp, there you go, wanted to show you traffic is flowing over. traffic has been reinstated just a few minutes ago. chp gave us the all clear. we confirmed it. all lanes have been cleared after they cleared up the small fuel spill as well as the crash involving a semi. the richmond-san rafael bridge fully open both directions. the bibridge, no backup and no problems in the area on the maze or the approach. the big look shows you speed sensors are great all around the bay. i want to point out a couple

hazard signs. in contra costa county, because of the fire. >> that fire is raging in contra costa county. triggering evacuations and already destroying one home. it's burning in the clayton area. you see on the map there, and we know firefighters are still working right now, and as today in the bay reports from the fire lines, one of the biggest challenges firefighters are facing is the steep terrain. >> for the homes still standing but in the fire danger area, cal fire crews are on construction duty, and along marsh creek road, crews keep close tabs on fires burning nearby. some of the first people to be led in are volunteers who will help evacuate livestock. >> my daughter notified me to hook the truck and trailer up and get on the road. >> they'll be on hand to clear out large animals. >> a large line of vehicles stayed parked. many are evacuees. a fewmony had minutes to get

what they want. >> high family is okay, my husband is at work, my kids are at friends houses. i got my dogs. >> i wish they hit the plants on the side of the house a little harder. >> roger spent some of the afternoon watching the fleet of helicopters and planes drop water and fire retardant near his home. several structures have burned down. >> as sergio mentioned, the red cross has opened two evacuation centers. one is at the clayton meeting hall next to the library over on clayton road. the other at the brentwood community complex center next to the library on oak street in brentwood. pete suratos will be live along the fire lines for us coming up this morning on today in the bay at 5:00 a.m. >> south bay also dealing with a wildfire burning in southern santa clara county. in san martin.

now, at one point yesterday, crews had to close all lanes of southbound 101. listen as people who live around there talk about fighting the fire themselves. >> help the best i can because it's my neighborhood. i have known these people and everything. so it's completely crazy right now. >> united community down there. literally grabbing buckets of water to do what they could. a lot of thick black smoke in the air. right now, the fire 60% contained. >> meanwhile, a brief scare outside the u.s. embassy in beijing. a man det natded a very small homemade explosive device. the only person injured was the guy who set it off. that's fortunate because this is a very busy area. police say he hurt his hand. authorities say that mangis from inner mongolia. >> a group of house republicans the taking the battle against the mueller investigation up a

notch. last night, a group of 11 house republicans introduced a resolution accusing him of blocking congressional access to information about the investigation. the leading gop lawmakers say this resolution falls far short of having enough support to pass. >> 4:35. san francisco police hope you'll recognize the man you see here riding on the handlebars of that bike. they believe he may be tied to an unsolved cold case murder. police yesterday also released a still image of that man. here it is. somebody shot and killed mitchell warren in september of 2016 in the tenderloin. his family says he would have celebrated his 26th birthday this saturday. police believe he may have had some kind of altercation with the man you saw earlier. >> new information obtained by investigators may help solve the disappearance of a 20-year-old college student raised in oakland. molly tibbetts vanished one week ago in iowa. that's where she lived for about half her life.

friends say she went jogging last wednesday and hasn't been seen since. the fbi searching through her digital footprint and looking for information through her fitbit fitness tracker. they're also looking at social media and messages she sent before disappearing. people want to know answers. >> she's been a blessing to our family, and we just want her home. >> investigators say tibbets left her contacts, glasses, wallet, and i.d. behind, but if she was wearing her fitbit, it may show her movements on the day she disappeared. >> 4:36. now to decision 2018. a new poll puts gavin newsom and dianne feinstein in the lead for their respective races. first, the governor's race. newsom topping john cox 55% to 31%. the numbers come from the public policy institute of california. now, over in the senate race, dianne feinstein has 46% support. nearly double that of her challenger, state senator kevin de leon, who has just 24%.

good morning. i'm leslie picker at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street could be in for a topsy turvy day today. the dow has indicated to open higher after president trump and european officials announce they have made progress in talks to avoid further trade tensions and tariffs. the nasdaq could drop following disappointing earnings from facebook, though. on today's watch list, reports on unemployment and durable goods. also the busiest day of earnings season with results of the likes of mastercard, mcdonald's, intel, and starbucks. the dow rising 172 points yesterday to 25414. the nasdaq closing up 91 to 7932. back to facebook. shares of the social media giant are down sharply in premarket trading. the company reporting a slow' down in user growth, notably in europe where new internet privacy rules are now in effect. facebook is also warning revenue will continue to take a hit this

year while expenses grow. it's spending a lot of money to hire people to work on safety and security in response to the cambridge analytica data scandal and russian hackers using facebook to push fake news ahead of the 2016 election. if the stock decline holds today, facebook's market value could drop by more than $100 billion. >> hyundai says it may boost production of suvs in the u.s. in response to potential tariffs against imported cars. hyundai has a factory in alabama. the south korean country said if trade disputed are drawn out, they would reduce the need for autos and increase the competition. coming up next on today in the bay, a look at the warm weather ahead. >> yeah, we're starting out with clouds. especially near the coast, and we're seeing that in palo alto as well. inland areas are going to heat up. while it stays fairly comfortable in palo alto throughout the day, reaching into the low 80s by early

and the san francisco skyline. been a bit of a foggy start to this all week. >> what do you think about this? would not having to drive yourself to the grocery store make the trip less stressful? >> google's self-driving cars are offering rides to walmart. walmart shoppers will place orders online and the car will take them to the store to pick it up. part of wemow's process. waymo will also start offering rides to other businesses and restaurants in the coming week. >> let's get a check of your traffic and weather. let's start with kari. >> hopefully nothing that will stretch you out as far as the weather. we're going to start out with a few clouds near the coast, and then as we go through the day, our skies clearing all across the bay area. here's a live look outside in fremont this morning. it's already moving out there. we do have some clear visibility and right now, the seven-day forecast comes up on the bottom

of the screen for the south bay, it's still going to be hot over the next few days. let's go to pleasanton. it's going to be 64 degrees at 8:00. at noon, 87. of course, heating up fast. again today, still pretty hot. 94 degrees. if you're going outside for a workout, going for a jog, do that early during the hours. our temperature trend for santa clara will be in the low 60s. 67 at 9:00, and mid 70s by 11:00 this morning, and in concord today, it's going to heat up into the mid 90s this afternoon. we're going to be at 90 degrees by 1:00 today. 93 at 2:00. looking at all of our microclimates and the high temperatures for today, we're up to 93 in morgan hill, for milpitas, expect a high of 89 degrees. 98 in danville, and we see a wide range in temperatures. oakland staying in the mid 70s, low 60s for half moon bay. palo alto today, 83 degrees.

and for san francisco, mostly staying in the upper 60s for the north bay. expect the temperature in novato and in napa to reach up to 90 degrees. we're getting ready for the garlic festival, starting out for tomorrow and it will reach into the upper 80s and low 90s. we'll get to 90 degrees at 3:00. if you can get there early or later in the evening, you'll have more comfortable temperatures and it will stay cool for santa cruz, the weekend with mid 70s tomorrow and then some low 70s for saturday. more clouds on sunday, and that will keep it cooler. we'll also see some slightly cooler temperatures for the end of the weekend, for the inland valleys, but it's still going to be very warm, even for this time of year. we should be in the low 80s. we're going to reach into the mid 60s for the next several days in san francisco. and mike, you're hearing about a road closure. >> i am. we talked about the fire, laura talked about the fire in morgan territory. contra costa county, it's not a major commute spot supermost of

our drivers. you see the freeways show the speed sensors at green, but it's a critical portion of marsh creek road as you're traveling out of clayton toward morgan territory, that's the section closed. keep that in mind. there was an evacuation in a couple zones. we're following the fire, but i wanted folks to know about that for the morning commute as well. if you travel through cocoa county for 680, 580 over here, or 24 and highway 4, you're fine. those freeways are moving nicely and we'll continue to follow that for your morning commute. getting to the bay bridge, no problems. we have the cash lanes on either side of the fast track right here, they have the typical overnight stack-up that starts to form before 5:00. we should start to see that clear up as they open all of the cash lanes. we have no problems, the rails open for business. ac transit will still have an issue at the great american station because of the 49ers training camp going on. there's parking restrictions there, so keep that in mind. back to you. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, if you ever thought to yourself, do i

have the flu or not, an east bay company has created an at-home flu test. >> here's how it works. you would swab your nose and put the swab in a device that can detect the influenza virus. you'll know in about 20 minutes if you're infected. if positive, an app connects you to a doctor who can prescribe you with medicine. >> instead of going to a doctor's office and infecting other patients, they can test at home and get that prescription as quickly as possible at home. and ideally within an hour. >> the company expects to go through fda clinical trials this summer and hopes to have a version ready for you to buy by 2020. >> it's 4:49. police say a san bruno man called city hall threatening to blow up the building. police tracked him down. he's charged with making criminal threats. they seized two firearms in the man's home but did not find any

explosives. >> between now and sunday, yosemite national park will be free of visitors. and neighbor businesses expected to take a hit. firefighters orders evaguations from the ferguson fire burning outside the park, about 30% contained, but the lingering problem is all that smoke. visitors who had to leave are certainly disappointed and are the businesses who count on their cash. >> i'm super disappointed. like, there's a whole bunch of cool stuff to see down there. >> tourists who have been in the area, they're not going to stay there long enough until sunday when the park opens up again. >> the fire has burned more than 41,000 acres. highway 41 into yosemite is closed. the evacuations are supposed to be lifted on sunday. >> new data shows a slump in home sales in the bay area. according to analyst reports, some sales in june were the lowest in four years. new home sales were about 32%

below average. while previously owned home sales were about 12% below average. analysts say the reason could be affordability. for the first time, more than 40% of the homes in the bay area are being sold for a million dollars or more. >> call california capital 2.0, but one lawmaker behind the plan hoping to retain some of the original vision. california lawmakers this year approved replacing the 66-year-old annex at the state capital that now lawmakers are pushing a bill to preserve part of the old structure's history, including keeping architectural designs and historic imagery from the original building in the new span. >> stories that talk about how we govern ourselves, and the strength of california. and you know, attention to fiscal discipline is actually very important. >> the east annex was added to the original capital building in the 1950s. no date yet set for demolition. coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds.

welcome back, everyone. to today in the bay. thursday morning, taking a live look outside overlooking highway 101, university avenue over in palo alto. mike has his eye on the morning commute, make sure things are moving smoothly out there, hopefully, for your day. it's 4:55. for many parents of high school seniors, back to school time means planning for next year. >> chris chmura has an important reminder for families of college-bound students. >> it's simple, really. don't leave money on the table. in 2015, san francisco based nerd wallet estimates students nationwide left $2.9 billion in financial aid unclaimed. of that, 100,000 california high school seniors gave up almost $4,000 each because they didn't apply for a pell grant. here's what they should have done, fill out the faf saw, the free application for federal student aid. >> just go to the fafsa.gov and that will give you instructions on how to fill it out. and if all else fails, contact

degrees early in the morning. low 70s throughout the afternoon. and mostly sunny skies. we'll take a look at what's going on around the bay area and the temperatures that will come down a little bit more for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're starting out with the richmond bridge. >> i am, because some folks may have heard overnight there was a crash that closed the bridge because of a small fuel spill. that was eastbound traffic. you'll see while there was a steady stream, now there's just one set of tail lights traveling across the bridge, but it's open for business. both directions have reopened without any problems. there's slowing at the bay bridge because the cash lanes have the backup and they have yet to open at least one more cash lane for the morning commute. we'll track that. to the south bay, you see the flip in highway 87. that should clear, but i'll track that. we don't want problems for guadalupe parkway, and then here, activity, a closure for one roadway. i'll talk about that in particular, but i want to tell
