we talked about this, finding the police officer at the gate serving up lemonade. first pitch at 61 degrees. make sure you're wearing something nice and warm as you're making your way to san jose. here's a look at our temperature trend for the morning. low 60s, heading into the low 80s by noon. we'll look at all of our microclimates coming up. and mike has a look at the morning commute. >> bad news, good news. first, bad news. this crash is blocking two -- well, basically three lanes. 2 1/2 lanes of westbound 80. that's your commute direction right here at ashby. this is in emeryville. it jams up berkeley, traffic coming past golden gate field to about carlson and central. this is a bad problem for the east shore freeway. this box truck right here as the sun comes up, you can see it blocking a couple lanes and some sort of spill there as well. they may need the absorbant to clean it up. that could mean an extended closure. that could be a big problem if you're headed to the bay bridge via the east shore freeway. there's the jammed traffic coming off the richmond bring as

well. farther south from there, we're looking at the maze, the bay bridge. that's providing those areas with lighter traffic because everybody is held up there. that's much beter for the rest of the approach coming from contra costa. >> the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. the update for the south bay, 237 has another crash. >> thanks so much. we continue to monitor breaking news in the east bay where this is what they're up against. firefighters battling a brush fire in clayton. 100 homes are threatened. evacuations are in effect. the so-called marsh fire broke out yesterday afternoon at marsh creek road and morgan territory road there in clayton valley. you can see the area we're talking about, just away from concord there. today in the bay's pete suratos live in the fire zone this morning. were firefighters able to make some progress overnight, pete? >> yeah, laura, we're getting new information from cal fire in the past half hour that they

were at least able to stop forward progress on the marsh fire. that's good news when it comes to containing the fire. you can see over my right shoulder, that's where the fire is burning. we showed you in the last hour. it's in that pocket in the steep terrain area along marsh creek road that they're really working on trying to contain at this point, but the good news is they're stopping the forward progress on this fire. here's the latest information we're getting from cal fire. it still stands at 247 acres burned when it comes to the marsh fire, and it's currently at 27% containment. where we're standing is on marsh creek road. there's still closures along the road, specifically between morgan territory road to the west and gill road to the east. but i want to point out the evacuation has been lifted on leon drive and morgan territory road south of leon drive. that's as it pertains to this road. and most importantly, from folks in this area, there's still that power outage, at least through 9:00 a.m. as far as when the fire started, it began around 2:30 p.m.

yesterday in this area where we're standing near the 12,000 block of marsh creek road. so far, three structures including a home burning down with about 100 structures threatened in the clayton area. there was quite a long line of cars, i think we're showing you some of the video along marsh creek road yesterday as plenty of residents were forced to evacuate. >> my family is okay, my husband were at work, my kids were at friends houses. i got my dogs and that's all that matters. >> i just wish they would hit the flames on the side of the hill by our house a little harder. >> so a bit of worry there for the residents, as you can imagine. the goal today, obviously, is for crews to protect the structures in the area. there are evacuation centers set up at clayton meeting hall and brentwood community center. let's take you back out here live, give our viewers a look at the fire. you can see the smoke billowing in this area. that's where they're fighting the marsh fire right there,

where you see those flames. so apparently, cal fire says the lower temps overnight may have helped with the containment efforts. it appears to be so as they have stopped forward progress. we expect to get more information from fire crews at 7:00 a.m. when a morning briefing takes place. we're live here in clayton, pete suratos for today in the bay. fwl. >> hopefully they can get work done because it's going to heat up again. >> bay area firefighters headed to southern california to help battle a destructive wild fire in idle wild. they have arrested someone, nearly 5,000 acres have burned, five homes destroyed and dozens more threatened. the fire broke out yesterday morning. so far, mow containment and evacuations are in effect. >> 6:04. breaking news. an arizona state trooper dead and another hurt after being shot on a highway near phoenix. this is new video into our newsroom of the scene. it started when a trooper got a call of a man throwing things at

cars. troopers got into some sort of altercation with the suspect and that's when the suspect got ahold of one of the troopers' guns and began shooting. >> a brief scare today outside the u.s. embassy in beijing. police there say a man detonated a small homemade explosive device. the only person injured was the man who set it off. that's fortunate because it's a very busy area. police say he hurt his hand. authorities say the man was from inner mongolia. >> happening today, the deadline for the white house to reunite children who have been separated from their parents at the u.s./mexico border. we know 2600 children over 5 years old were initially covered by the court order to put them back together with their parents. but it's now believed hundreds of them will not be reunited in time because i.c.e. may have already deported their parents without the kids. later on the "today" show, we'll hear from a honduran mother who spent weeks trying to reunite with her two young sons after

degrees at 7:00. 76 degrees at 10:00, and in pleasant hill, hot again today. reaching already into the low 90s by 1:00. here's a look at all of our microclimates and our high temperatures for today. reaching 99 in antioch. livermore, 95 degrees. san jose, expect a high of 87. and 67 in san francisco with napa today reaching the low 90s, and 76 today in oakland. heading over to mike, now you have a traffic alert. >> same crash, but chp now says special traffic alert. they call it a sig alert, because we fully have three lanes blocked. the chp is on scene. there's the box truck. as the sun comes up, you can see there's no back tire, just the rim. the fire is over there. someone walking around not looking happy and these drivers are not happy. you can see the beginning of the backup which stretches past golden gate field, and there may be a second crash in the backup. that makes the maze move smoothly if you're heading out of the area of emeryville or out of arinda, contra costa county,

we're coming up on 6:14, and it's friday eve. let's get a live look outside over the south bay. we're seeing the clouds rolling by. heading over to willow glen. you'll see clearing as we go through the 10:00 hour, and it will be a nice day. warming up into the low 80s by 2:00. but parts of the bay area will be hot again this afternoon. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates in about five minutes. >> and we're still looking at this. a closure of more than half of the freeway, westbound 80. this is underneath the ashby crossing. we have a big backup and now we have over an hour from highway 4 through richmond where it jams up to emeryville and berkeley. the bay bridge toll plaza, though, benefits. that's clear right now. good morning.

i'm leslie picker at cnbc headquarters. wall street could be in for a topsy turvy day today. the dow is indicated to open higher after president trump and european officials announce they have made progress in talks to avoid further trade tensions and tariffs. the nasdaq could drop, though, after facebook reported disappointing earnings with a slowdown in user growth and warning revenue could decline this year. facebook's stock losing a fifth of its value. on today's watch list, reports on unemployment and durable goods. also the busiest day of earnings season with results from the likes of mastercard, mcdonald's, amazon, intel, and starbucks. the dow rising 172 points yesterday to 25,414. nasdaq closing up 91 to 7932. >> alexa can now tell you the hours and phone numbers of businesses in your area. as amazon works to make the voice assistant more useful. so for example, you can now ask your echo device, alexa, what time does rite aid close?

marcus has the day off, but not kari. she's in here working on a forecast that look pretty heated. >> yeah, hot again this afternoon. as we start out this morning with a live look at all the cloud rolling by. i wanted to give you a heads up about the spare the air alert day and the moderate air quality we'll have. that means we should all carpool, catch public transit if you can. for the east bay, locally dense smoke coming by from the marsh fire near clayton valley. if you're on your way out to the b.a.r.t. station in dublin, it will be nice and cool as you get ready to head out the door. our dublin temperatures will be hot again for the day, with our temperatures going from the upper 50s to the low 90s by 1:00 today. we'll look at our microclimates and the weekend forecast. mike is still tracking that problem in emeryville. >> a traffic alert issued by chp because of this box truck right here. the good news, that flatbed tow truck showed up, the second tow truck that can hook up to the box truck is now there.

two law enforcement, actually three tow trucks now. they'll be able to clear this from the roadway. chp has given the estimate of about 6:45, but we have only two lanes getting by. this is west 80 at ashby. this is a huge problem for the east shore freeway, jamming up out of richmond. this traffic alert continues. that makes it really bad coming off the upper east shore freeway, but great if you're coming down through the maze. now, problem if you are heading to the maze, though, west 24 in the caldecott tunnel, someone lost a bumper. doesn't sound like a major crash, but a problem causing more slowing. likely a traffic break. two issues there affecting folks in alameda and contra costa county. anywhere south of there, looking great. anywhere west, looking great. peninsula and south bay just starting the morning commute over here. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. breaking news that we're following this morning, and a live look. this is in clayton where firefighters are trying to knock down a brush fire that started yesterday afternoon, forcing about 1,000 people to evacuate. we do have some good news this

morning. we're learning firefighters have managed to stop that fire from advancing oefr night. that marsh fire, what they're calling it, is burning in the area of marsh creek and morgan territory roads in the east bay. it destroyed a home yesterday and two other structures. firefighters say it's now about 20% contained. close to 250 acres burned. >> we have live pictures as well over the cranston fire burning in idyllwild in riverside county. the fire started yesterday morning, quickly grew to 4700 acres. 5% contained this morning. 2,000 homes have been evacuated. firefighters from several bay area fire departments took off to help battle that fire. >> south bay also dealing with a wildfire this morning, burning in southern santa clara county in san martin near church avenue and monterey road. at last check, one home is destroyed as well as several other structures and cars. at one point yesterday, crews closed all lanes of southbound 101. listen as people who live around the area talk about fighting

that fire themselves. >> tried to help out the best i can because it's my neighborhood. i have known these people and everything, so it's completely crazy right now. >> pretty tight community down there. some literally grabbed buckets of water to do what they could. right now, that fire is 60% contained. >> it's 6:34 on your thursday morning. looking live at the big board this morning. stock market just opened up a couple minutes ago. slightly higher on easing tariffs with europe. but all eyes are on facebook locally. that stock plummeted during after-hours trading last night. now, if the decline holds today, and it looks like it is, the tech giant's value could drop by $100 billion. today in the bay's bob redell live at facebook headquarters to explain why this is happening. good morning, bob. >> well, good morning to you, scott. this after facebook reported what was disappointing earnings yesterday. facebook did beat its estimated earnings per share for both its

revenue and daily users were lower than what the market was expecting and the company also warned its future revenue growth could continue to take a hit this year as its expenses increase. >> we're investing so much in security that it will significantly impact our profitability. we're starting to see that this quarter. >> that was facebook ceo mark zuckerberg. in yesterday's after-hours earnings phone call. that was the first earnings report since the cambridge analytica scandal during which we learned 87 million users had had their information exposed. as a result, facebook has given users more privacy choices, which could help explain the drop in ad revenue. analysts believe that the drop in daily users is linked to new privacy rules in europe. one bright note from yesterday's earnings report, facebook did report that it crossed all of its apps including the facebook app, facebook menjers, whatsapp,

and instagram, there's now a total audience of 2.5 billion people. right now, facebook is down just under 18%, that's a huge drop. and as you mentioned, scott, that represents a loss of more than $100 billion in market cap. reporting live here in menlo park, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you much. >> at 6:36 right now, san francisco police hope you recognize the man you see here. riding on the handlebars of a bike. we had that picture. we believe he may be tied to an unsolved cold case murder. police yesterday also released still images. these are the ones of the man. someone shot and killed mitchell warren in september of 2016 in the tenderloin. his family says he would have celebrated his 26th birthday this saturday. police believe he may have had some kind of altercation with the gunman. >> new information obtained by investigators may help solve the disappearance of a 20-year-old college student raised in oakland. molly tibbetts vanished one week

ago in iowa, where she lived for about half of her life. friends say she went jogging last wednesday, hasn't been seen since. the fbi searching through her digital footprint, looking at information from her fitbit fitness tracker as well. and they're looking at social media, any messages she sent before disappearing. people who know her just want answers. >> she's been a blessing to our family. and we just want her home. >> investigators say she left her contacts, glasses, wallet, and i.d. behind. but if she was wearing her fitbit, it may show her movements on the day she disappeared. >> new this morning, this is a really strange one. strange crime on the peninsula. happened on sunday morning. and we're just learning about it now is why we're telling you. a teenager facing charges after palo alto police say he climbed through a window and asked a sleeping couple their wi-fi password. the couple, both in their 60s,

woke up. the man got out of bed, pushed the teenager down the hallway and out the door and then called police. the couple said two kitchen knives are missing. police are also linking the unnamed teenager to a bicycle robbery. all right. we're looking over here to our problem for the east shore freeway. but that tow truck we showed you has pulled this box truck almost completely off the roadway. and then there's another tow truck to help that tow truck pull that box truck. so everybody is helping each other. still, we only have two lanes, west 80 at ashby avenue, open. you can see this is the crossing. this is right at the burerkele berkeley/emeryville city limits. jammed up traffic all the way out of richmond. a lighter volume is what is saving that portion of the freeway, but that is a problem. the bay bridge toll plaza as a result is a lot clearer. no backup right now. another problem, also keeping the maze clear, is west 24th in the caldecott tunnel. a crash and a disabled vehicle

inside the left boor. that will be a problem as folks travel over there. be careful. we're looking at more slowing out of arinda, but i'm hoping chp can clear it quickly. >> that's tough inside the tunnel. >> yeah, an issue there. the rest of the bay, clear. peninsula, south bay, no problem. >> let's hope it stays that way. kind of cruising into the weekend. >> we're trying to get there because there's a lot going on around the bay area. if you're planning to head to the gilroy garlic festival, we know sometimes it can be really hot. yeah, take your mints. it's not going to be too hot. we're coming down from the upper 90s. and we'll bring it down to 90 for tomorrow as we kick off the garlic festival. a lot of sunshine. if you get there early or late, you'll have much more comfortable temperatures. let's look at saturday's forecast. still a wide range in temperatures from the coast to the inland areas, from 67 to 89 degrees. and for sunday, more of the same. cool coastal temperatures. some clouds and fog. the bay at 86 and 90 inland. as we get a look at our

new this morning -- good thursday morning. right now at 6:44, a cloudy start over the south bay. we will see these clouds rolling out of here within the next couple of hours. and our temperatures going from the low 70s later this morning to the upper 80s today. it's still going to be pretty warm as we go into the afternoon, but some spots are going to reach into the upper 90s again today. we'll take a look at our range in temperatures and also what's ahead for the weekend coming up in about five minutes. right here, the east shore freeway, the sweeper truck is clearing up all the absorbant. they got that truck off the roadway and that's great news. the westbound 80 still jammed up. only two lanes right there. all the way out of richmond right now. >> thanks so much. it's 6:44. new this morning, sick but you're not sure if you have the

2020. >> quarter to 7:00 right now. between now and sunday, yosemite national park will be free of visitors, and nearby businesses are expected to take a hit. firefighters ordered evacuations yesterday from the ferguson wildfire burning outside the park. that fire is now close to 30% contained but the lingering problem is all that smoke. visitors who had to leave were disappointed. so are businesses that count on their cash. >> i'm super disappointed. like, lisa is telling us all about it and how there's like a whole bunch of cool stuff to see down there. >> tourists who have been in the area, they're not going to stay here long enough until sunday for when the park opens up again. >> the fire has now burned more than 40,000 acres. highway 41 into yosemite is closed. again, those evacuations are supposed to be listed on sunday. our coverage of the story continues in about 15 minutes when the "today" show starts. miguel almaguer reports live from yosemite national park.

>> to decision 2018. a new poll puts gavin newsom and dianne feinstein in the lead in their respective races. we'll start with the governors race. newsom topped john cox, 55% to 31%. the numbers come from the public policy institute of california. in the senate race, feinstein has a 46% support, nearly double that of her challenger, state senator kevin de leon, he has 24%. >> a group of house republicans taking the battle over the mueller investigation up a notch. they have taken the first step to try to impeach the deputy attorney general overseeing the probe, rod rosenstein. last night, a group of 11 house republicans introduced a resolution accusing rosenstein blocking congressional access to information about the investigation. but leaders in their own party say the resolution falls far short of having enough support to pass. >> 6:47 right now. we still don't know who won the massive mega millions jackpot in

rosa and in napa, 56 in oakland and in san francisco. a little warmer in san jose as you get ready to head out, 61 degrees. maybe you're on your way to the station. we'll see the clouds rolling by for the next couple hours as you make your way to work this morning. as we wait later in the morning, our temperatures will be heating up but still a nice day. 82 degrees, at least in the south bay. if you're going out to at&t park, we have a home game. first pitch at 7:15 will be chilly with breezy winds and some drifts of fog. maybe even misting and drizzling. if you're working out today in spots like the tri-valley, livermore is going to be hot. try to do your workout early in the day, before 10:00, and that's where we'll see our temperatures at 75 degrees. heating up into the low 90s by 1:00 today. and then you'll want to take it easy or maybe head to the gym. our highs in antioch reaching 99 degrees. 90 in napa today. and 76 in oakland. san jose, 87 degrees.

just shy of the berkeley curve at ashby. that keeps the bay bridge toll plaza clear. let's look at what waze maps out for the towns. i give you some options. coming down the area off the carquinez bridge into san francisco takes almost two hours. a couple other routes, but there's a shift. waze is continuing to update. they're no longer sending you to highway 24 through arinda. we have also this traffic issue. west 24, only one lane is blocked but it's inside the caldecott tunnel. that's causing a backup out of arinda. another problem out of lafayette, contra costa county moves well and so does the south bay. there may be a stall on the san mateo bridge. i'll check on that next. >> a busy man. thanks. coming up next, a quick look at the top stories on today in the bay including the protest planned today as we hit the court-ordered deadline for the trump administration to reunite migrant families. >> 6:51, uber announcing drivers in the bay area made more than a billion dollars last year.

across california, ride share and delivery drivers have pulled in nearly $3 billion. the ride share company says 31% of drivers were unemployed before driving with uber. plus, disney getting rid of plastic straws and stirrers. you won't see them on disneyland or disney cruises. it says it uses more than 175 million straws every year. disney is joining several other companies to get rid of plastic straws. more news right after this break.

welcome back to you. before you head out the door, we have the top stories on today in the bay. >> in fact, let's take a live look at clayton this morning. good news from firefighters. they've stopped forward progress in a brush fire that forced about 1,000 people to evacuate. it started yesterday afternoon in the area around marsh creek road and bragden way. flames destroyed one home and two other structures. we're waiting for a new update this morning from firefighters on the acreage consumed so far. it's at least 20% contained with close to 250 acres burning so far. >> at 6:55, fire investigators say arson is to blame for a destructive wildfire in idyllwild in riverside county. a suspect is also in custody. this is brand-new video into our newsroom from the fire zone. five homes have burned and dozens other threatened.

the fire started yesterday morning. it's 5% contained this morning. more than 2,000 homes have been evacuated. >> breaking news. an arizona state trooper is dead, another hurt after they were shot on a highway near phoenix. this is the hospital where the trooper is being cared for. officials say it started when the troopers got a call of a man throwing things at cars. they got into an altercation with the suspect. the suspect got ahold of one of the troopers' guns and began shooting. >> scary moments outside the u.s. embassy in beijing. police say a man detonated a small homemade explosive device. he was the only person injured in the blast, which is fortunate because it's a busy area. police say he hurt his hand. investigators say the man is from inner mongolia. no wort on any kind of motive. >> new video showing the rescue efforts in greece. crews still looking for people who are missing after deadly wildfires swept an area not far from athens. 79 people were killed.

these were the deadliest wildfires to hit that country in decades. flags across greece are flying at half staff today. >> today is the court-ordered deadline for the trump administration to reunite migrant families. they'll hold sit-ins at the capitol today. protesters will rally for the hundreds of children who still have not been reunited with their parents. some 2500 children under 5 years old were initially covered by the court order, but now it's believed hundreds will not be reunited in time in part because i.c.e. may have already deported their parents. >> 6:57. youtube deleting four videos from controversial conservative host alex jones. one of the videos in question showed an adult shoving a child to the ground. youtube says that violated its violent policy. the video serve also gave jones a strike which means he can't live stream on youtube for three months. a live look at facebook headquarters in menlo park this morning. shares of facebook tanking after
