it's not always pretty at the beach, but you do it. okay. it's in there, and we're going to kick up the wind. let me come down here, and see what happens. in the control room they're getting ready. let's fire up the wind in three, two, one. first they crank the wind to 10 miles per hour. okay. we're up at 10 miles per hour right now. pretty typical wind speed along the shoreline, and this is what's happening to the umbrella. blowing around in the wind a little, but it's still inside the ground. but just watch what happens when we take it up just a notch to 15 miles per hour. we're going to keep an eye on the umbrella right here. there it goes flying. whoa. can you manage if you were on the blanket right next to this or even down the beach a little bit with that spike? and that's a pretty typical gust for a shoreline. it's nuts. here it is from another angle as a umbrella is ripped out of the sand, the spike is flying through the air, smashing right

8:32 am
glenn close is here for her role in the wife. we'll chart with her about that and more. and jill martin is here for steals and deals. it's full of bundles for your face, and home. and we'll teach you how to put a fresh summer spin on a classic that everyone loves. >> first, fans were invited to bring their dogs to a special bark at oriole park event last night at the game between the orioles and the red sox. and sunny's siblings were the stars of the show. one even helped with the first pitch. and a strike at that. >> nice. you got the weather. >> yes. it's humid but it's not going to rain in the mid atlantic today. finally we are looking at a break from that. as we go into tomorrow, we'll get another round of rain. it's a secondary front that could bring severe storms. it stays hot and dry out west. going through the weekend the
8:33 am
temperatures will stay above average up and down the west coast from seattle all the way down to san diego. also in the southwest we're looking at temperatures well above 105 degrees. on sunday it looks nice in the northeast. we'll lose the humidity. temperatures in the 80s. in the southeast scattered showers and storms. it looks good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. it's going to be very hot still again today for the inland areas. not only that, but we will have moderate air quality. you should carpool or limit your outdoor exposure to the hot temperatures and moderate air quality today with our high temperature reaching 99 degrees. and in san jose, it's like a high of 87 degrees. 76 in oakland and 67 in san francisco with napa today reaching 90. we have to include all our folks on this side of the plaza. it's summertime.
8:34 am
the plaza is packed. >> dylan, thank you. now to the great glenn close. the six-time oscar nominee is getting rave reviews again. this time for her stars role in the movie called "the wife". she plays a woman who sacrificed everything for her husband and his career until, well. >> we are so delighted to be giving you this price. your career has a truly remarkable span to it. out only do you write with extraordinary intimacy, you have channelled forms that will affect generations of writers to come. >> well, i, um, i should be getting something for all the gray in my beard. >> indeed, yes. thank you for doing so. mrs. castleman? >> yes. >> by the way, that face says it all. glenn close is here. i cannot oversell this movie. i saw it yesterday. it was one of those things i
8:35 am
didn't know i was going to feel so many emotions in one movie. the woman you play is a wife, and she is in the shadows like so many women. we've all kind of felt this way. tell us a little bit about joan. >> yes. well, she fell in love with her professor at smith in the 50s, and they ended up down in the village, and he wanted to be a great writer, and from that moment on, she started supporting him in that. >> and i think for a lot of women, we've all done this at some point in our lives. you sort of make yourself smaller so that your man feels bigger, and when i was watching this, i was feeling a lot of those emotions. she was trying so hard to keep him up. >> yeah. i think so. yeah. >> and tell me about their dynamic. there are so many surprises, and the reason i'm tiptoeing through this is because i don't want to
8:36 am
give anything away. you want it revealed as you watch it. >> i had a great partner in jonathan price. one of the great actors alive today. it actually ended up being an incredibly reel, incredibly intimate portrait of a marriage. and all the power plays, the what's not said, you know, when compromise is made, and then the cost of that. >> well, what was great is there are obviously flashbacks to when you are younger, and that role is played by your daughter, annie, who was equally as incredible. what was that like working on a project with her? >> well, i didn't actually -- i got out of town when she was filming all of that. >> was that on purpose? >> on purpose, absolutely. that was her deal. so we shot that part in glasgow, and i went up to the highlands. >> if you had your way, would
8:37 am
you have watched? >> no. i -- i -- i have huge, huge -- she's naturally talented. she has a great talent, and i just thought it's between her and the director and harry loyd. you don't want your mom around. right? >> does she ask you for advice? >> well, we sat around the table for a week really, really working on those characters. and, of course, annie was the one who had established joan. and there are certain things about joan, her shyness, her determination to do what would fulfill her, and so she -- it was her responsibility to do that. >> when you hear something like you put this project out there into the universe, and then all the sudden you hear oscar buzz, you've been nominated six times for an oscar. when you hear oscar buzz, does it excite you? are you like don't tell me? i don't want to know. >> it excites me, and then i
8:38 am
don't want to know. i'll be doing a new play down at the public theater and be wonderfully distracted for the next six months. >> do you feel like that kind of performance? when you weren't speaking, i felt something. when you were speaking, i felt myself enraged. it's not like there's so much dialogue. all of a sudden i'd look at you and feel that. did it feel that powerful? >> yeah. the thing that was amazing about this process is that it was so internal for me. and i thought about it a lot, but very, very -- so much was internalized that when it -- it was private. and then when all of a sudden people are seeing it and they're reacting the way they are, it's like oh. you know? something that was so specific and so private has such resonance is just thrilling. >> it's going to touch so many women. and congrats to your daughter. she just got married to her
8:39 am
long-time boyfriend. i heard you were cutting a rug on the dance floor. congratulations. you have so many things to be proud of. >> thank you. >> the movie is called "the wife". you've got to see it. glenn will be back in a few weeks with annie, her daughter. we're looking forward to that. 8:48 am
you can build it into a quick family meal. this is something we have as a staple. we're using this beautiful halibut flillet. you can use steak or chicken, shrimp, whatever. we're using halibut. i'm going to use scallions and carrots and jalepeno and lime. greek yogurt. peppers and onions. >> this has to be easy. you have three small children. you can't spend a bunch of time in the kitchen. >> i just had ivs of coffee at this point. it's ridiculous. and you're right. part of it is keeping it simple. i have you to assist. you're more helpful than my four-year-old. >> you clearly haven't talked to my wife. that's not true. >> we're using vidalia onions.
8:49 am
i like it ten minutes. i like it carmelized. i like to bring out the natural sugars and get carmelized onions to juice up the tacos. this is where you'd add zucchini or chopped tomatoes. >> and this is how it looks after 10 minutes. >> this. and there's still texture. it's tender but sugary. chipotle chile powder and salt. this is a dry spice for the fish. here you can add in rice flour if anyone had a gluten sensitivity. >> would you notice the difference? >> i think rice flour is actually a little crispier. if i was doing this at home, i would do this step with my hands because you can pound this flower blend on to the fish and pack it on thicker, and it's
8:50 am
faster. >> and this is lightly floured. >> yes. you don't want a lot of caky flour on. into a medium skillet, nonstick. that's important so you're not fighting with the skillet. >> that's the verdict? >> i don't like coleslaw because i don't like mayo and water. this is another level. it's so good. and halibut, you have to like the people that come over if you're going to make halibut. >> if i can make you a halibut convert, i'll be happy. fish is always a little temperamental for people. this is the right fish to pick. it's almost like a steak. it holds up well. this is going to go three or four minutes on one side. then you flip it. i turn it until you get a perfect brown on all four sides. translucent. you want it cooked all the way through but not too dry. you like fish. >> i do. i do like fish.
8:51 am
it's really good. >> that's the other thing. this is a good way if you as a mom which i always am trying to get back in shape after the third baby, the whole thing. this is a nice dinner that feels light but the whole family enjoys it. this is a trick i do at home. i do half mayo and half greek yogurt to give it a little tang. >> a little less guilty. >> yes. >> half as guilty. >> and i have cumin and chipotle powder. that's sugar. i think the sugar makes this. and that's lime juice. about a quarter cup of lime juice. thank you. look at that pour. >> i can pour with the best of them. >> yes. what's in here? >> this is summer in a bowl to me. carrots red and green cabbage, scallions, jalepeno that i took the seed out of and beautiful red onion thinly shaved. toss that on.
8:52 am
>> all of it? >> yes. give it a quick toss and let it sit for 20 minutes. if you're trying to move things along and you need dinner on the table fast, get your hands in there and break it down. massage it. >> massage it. >> massage your kale and cabbage. that's why you like it. >> massage your cook as well. >> and finish your drink. >> you have something to drink. >> save some time for the drink. >> you just sucked that down. there's real tequila in there guys. let's build the tacos. >> there was. >>. >> we have the halibut in here. i'm going to grab a little bit of our sauteed veggies, peppers and onions. we're going to grab a little bit of coleslaw. this is a build your own station if you have friends coming over. a little cilantro is
8:53 am
traditional. i don't like it. where are you going? >> let me tell you about the cocktails. >> summer in a glass. >> i'm going to rename it that. >> a little bit of the final step here. lemon. i'm sorry, lime and orange juice on top. >> yours looks so much prettier than mine. >> that slau coleslaw is fantas. >> the drinks carson stole are any take on a margarita. >> what did you do? >> tequila, agau va, orange juice, and a spritzer. this is -- >> these are taken. >> no. >> there's olive oil there for you. >> daphne, thank you. if you want the recipes, head to
