some breaking news. the fire raging right now in and around reading there, you see the flames. firefighters in the bay area are on their way to help. >> we want to show you some new time lapsed video. the flames are really kicking up. people are posting incredible pictures and videos online, as thousands evacuate. complete coverage on the story in just a moment. we realize that you're trying to plan your morning as well. >> that's why mike and kari are here, they'll get you out the door, we'll return to fire coverage. traffic in a minute but we start with kari. >> just trying to get out the door in contra costa, we go to brentwood for the morning commute, nice and cool with low 60s and starting to warm up again pretty fast there. we'll be at 90 degrees by early afternoon, at 1:00. in san jose, diridon station forecast in the 50s as you head out the door and sunshine, we'll have a slightly cooler day in san jose, looking at slight

cooling for all across the bay area, and our microclimate. we'll talk about that more and the weekend ahead and mike, you're not so back in contra costa? >> we were also following something in contra costa county, south bay traffic flow, typical slowing altamont pass around north flint. over here lavorna southbound 680 where the crash was, and the crash looks like it's not even really a problem for the off-ramp. it is open and traffic flows nicely. pittsburg, bay point, concord and skyway coming off the carquinez bridge, smooth drive for the upper east shore freeway. the bay bridge toll plaza doesn't have a backup to speak of. low clouds are hovering around but stay above the deck so drivers have not seen a problem. we can't clearly see the tops of these towers right here. you have bigger news, right back to you. breaking news that we're following because people living in and around reading, they are

running for their lives. there's a wildfire that is just burning out of control. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in corte madeira where firefighters left to get a handle on helping crews up north. pete? >> reporter: that's right, laura, the firefighters leaving from central authority in corte madeira. there could be more firefighters heading up north as the fire continues to grow in size when you consider the continues up north. for our viewers just tuning in to give you an idea of what they'll be facing when they get up to that reading area. you can see the orange clouds in the sky there. the plumes of smoke right behind homes, that's why residents had to evacuate as fast as they can. according to fire officials, they're saying it was the wind, hot temperatures in the area, and humidity that contributes to the fire growing in size, because remember, it started on monday, and the initial calls according to the fire officials it was a mechanical failure by a

car in the area. the fire already tore through the small communities of shasta and kessewick before jumping the sacramento river and reaching the reading area which has the highest population at roughly about 92,000. people in that area. the fire is already at 28,000 acres, only 6% containment. one bulldozer operator on the fire lines has been killed. firefighters and civilians have also been injured and taken to hospitals, not to mention the dozens of homes that are already destroyed and forcing thousands of people to evacuate this area. now here is a fire official at a press conference. >> we ask everyone to heed evacuation orders and leave promptly. this fire is extremely dangerous and moving with no regard for what's in its path. >> reporter: of course we'll continue to follow this breaking story up north and have another update in the next half hour. we're live in corte madera, pete

when we get any new information. this story developing in washington, president trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, says the president knew about that infamous meeting at trump tower with the russians ahead of time. now, just a couple of seconds ago, the president denied he knew about this meeting. this meeting with the russians at trump tower in which he wrote an explain later, but he says he didn't know about it ahead of time. let's check in with tracie potts with a report from washington. >> a knowledgeable source tells nbc news that president trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, is ready to tell investigators that trump knew about the 2016 meeting with the russian lawyer before it happened, because his son told him. >> it is a big deal, because it really does, it really has the potential to put him smack dab in the middle of a conspiracy with the russians. >> donald trump jr. and other campaign officials attended that

meeting at trump tower. they were promised negative information on hillary clinton. the president has said he learned about the meeting later. >> trump approved of this meeting. if this is true, this is collusion! they are colluding with a secret kremlin plot. this is it. this is the ball game here. >> reporter: trump jr.'s attorney says it's not true. the president's attorney says cohen is not credible. he's under investigation for paying off women claiming to have affairs with mr. trump. >> the man is a liar, a proven liar. there's no way you're going to bring down the president of the united states on the testimony uncorroborated of a proven liar. >> reporter: it's the second time in two days cohen's dropped potentially damaging information on his former client. >> maybe because of this, it would be better -- >> reporter: on wednesday cohen's attorney released a secret recording of a conversations with trump about paying to silence a woman who claims they had a year-long affair. trump denies it.

tracie potts, nbc news, washington. happening today a man facing murder charges for an attack at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station goes to court. b.a.r.t. police said he attacked another man cutting the victim's knee. the man died a few days later from a blood infection from that cut. b.a.r.t. safety is top of mind for many people after a ration of violent crime including the deadly stabbing of 18-year-old nia wilson. last night we talked with a woman approached by a robber at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station garage. man drove towards her in her car, cutting her off. she knew she was about to get robbed. >> started to open his car door and i looked at him, i said don't you dare. and i kicked his car door, and i ran away. and while i was running away i was thinking oh my god, what if he has a gun. >> frightening.

few moments later she heard a woman scream and gunfire. the same man shot out her window, stole her phone and $20. the good thing is both women are okay. b.a.r.t. officials are releasing new tips for passengers. they say to know your train car number in case of an emergency. avoid looking distracted, and don't sleep on the train. officials say they have 4,000 working cameras throughout the system, working cameras, and they're increasing police presence. it's 5:08, new details on the apparent overdose of pop singer demi lovato. she's in the hospital recovering. authorities released the 911 audio call and tmz got that. >> we need to get somebody out here. >> we have the paramedics responding now. we are going with lights and sirens. >> the call to her hollywood hills home yesterday or tuesday, rather, at one point in the recording the caller requests arriving crews turn off their sirens and lights. the redacted call does not indicate what lovato might have

ingested. according to outlets including tmz and "people" magazine it was some kind of narcotic. barring a successful legal late appeal, as of next week you'll be able to download and print guns in the comfort of your home. these are images of both the downloads and weapons people will be able to produce. the company that came up with the designs called defense distributed actually debuted in 2013, but the state department shut it down. the white house recently allowed that company to start operating again. as of august 1st anyone with a 3-d printer will be able to assemble guns modeled like the ar-15 made of hard plastic. experts maintain the materials needed to print the guns still run to the thousands of dollars and often fall apart quickly and easily, but gun control advocates say the weapons are untraceable. gun control groups filed on appeal to block the blueprints. right now as we come up on 5:10, we are starting out with a nice and cool morning, a few

clouds moving by and it will be slightly cooler as we go into the afternoon, as we go to santa clara, we'll be at 66 degrees at 9:00, and then all of that sunshine warming us up into the upper 80s by 3:00 today. look at our highs for this afternoon, for all of our microclimates, san francisco will reach 66 degrees, 70 in oakland, 80 in palo alto and 85 in san jose. antioch one of the hotter spots reaching 96 and 102 in ukiah. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up for the day, and for palo alto coming up and mike has a crash in the altamont corridor. >> it's affecting if we see slowing for 580, the altamont pass and corridor, it's off of the freeway, altamont pass road at grant line road, where there is a crash, might affect you, but look at that, slowing on 580 that will affect you in either direction if that's where you're driving. everywhere else great. look at these sensors across the bay, no major problems. live look shows you coming out of the altamont, once you're out of that slowing for construction

good friday morning. it is 5:14. let's get a live look outside in palo alto this morning, as you get ready to head out the door. look at 101, things are looking good, clear visibility, although we have some dense fog near the coast. low 60s today, that fog cools us off a few more degrees. palo alto reaching about 83 degrees at 3:00 today. we'll look at all of our microclimates and the wide range of temperatures coming up in about five minutes. a look over here, this is across the bay, fremont 880, smooth as far as the traffic flow. we're showing you a little build

here and there. i'll show you what else we're dealing with coming up. >> thank you, kari and mike. it is 5:15. breaking news in northern california, fire affecting the city of reading. so far, nearly 29,000 acres burned. there are evacuation orders for hundreds of people right now. the fire actually jumped the sacramento river. dozer operator sadly was killed yesterday. we have an inside look at the office of emergency services as well, a room where officials are tracking all the fires across the state. new this morning, pg&e says it lost nearly $1 billion in the second quarter in part due to cleanup repair and legal costs related to last fall's wildfires. the erarning announcement comes as california lawmakers debate whether to ease the financial liability for future fires. it is urging lawmakers to soften the standard that puts utilities on the hook for damages. those opposing that say pg&e is trying to pass the buck to rake payers for fires it's

responsible for. to some of the other morning's business and tech headlines, contessa brewer live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, contessa. >> good morning, scott. wall street indicated to open slightly higher this morning, following a mixed trading session yesterday. the dow rose more than 100 points but the nasdaq fell by about 1%. facebook really dragged down that tech sector. facebook lost roughly $120 billion in market value. that's the largest one-day loss by any company in u.s. history. today we're watching for a report on second quarter gdp which may show the u.s. economy grew at the fastest pace in four years. we heard the president touting that yesterday. the dow closed up yesterday 112 points and the nasdaq fell 80. watch shares of amazon today. the company reported quarterly profits that topped $2 billion for the first time in its history. sales came up just shy of wall street's forecast though. amazon continues to be powered

by its dominance in online retail but also getting a big boost from its cloud business, amazon web services, and google's updating the way you search for events, adding new features to personalized results. so now when you search for an event, and tap on it, an overview will be displayed that shows details like the ticket costs, the venue reviews, time and location, and you can save those events to visit later or click right through and buy tickets via ticketmaster or stubhub and there's a for you tab that will show you events that google thinks you're going to like, because it knows your personal interests, because it follows everything that you buy, and everything that you search for on google. >> exactly. contessa, it's calling from inside the house. have a great weekend. >> right. we've got a follow-up now, some 10,000 disneyland workers have approved a new three-year labor contract. disney says it's part of the deal. lowest paid workers will receive $15 an hour by the year 2020,

two years ahead of the state's minimum wage. american airlines go i have been in on one of its rules for the cheap seats. starting in september, the airline will no longer require basic economy passengers to check their carry-on bags and pay the fees. in 2017, when the airline launched the no frills fare, you couldn't bring carry-ones in the cheap seats that didn't fit underneath your seat. >> so people were layering their clothes. >> going in like this. >> i actually heard people advise that you do that, that you wear as much as you can and stick a whole bunch of stuff in your pockets. >> i wear my clunkiest shoes because they take up a tremendous amount of space. >> it's always cold. >> certainly, jump on a plane to find relief from the heat. >> you could take a drive because the coast will stay very cool in the bay area. we can see why the low clouds that are right over the bay

bridge, you can't see the top of it there, and then at least the cars have a clear visibility and a clear drive this morning. it's a spare the air alert day once again, with our moderate air quality. we have still some drifts of smoke for parts of the east bay and also if you do have breathing sensitivities, you might want to limit your time outside today, high levels of ozone especially in spots where temperatures get hot again today. pleasanton starts out cool with low 60s. noon we're at 84 degrees, headed up to 92 for an afternoon high. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen, as you make plans for the weekend. check out your microclimate, and we are once again going to have still some really cool air for spots like half moon bay, but those ocean breezes, that marine layer and that fog will not make it that far inland, so we are going to get only some slight cooling today, as we get a look at the south bay, morgan hill reaching 90 degrees, downtown san jose 85 degrees there, 94 in

danville, and oakland. 70 degrees hayward, 75 today, and 79 in redwood city, san mateo 74 degrees, and 68 in the mission district. novato today 89 degrees, one of the warmer spots, and tomorrow you may be headed out to the benicia waterfront for the festival, where our storm ranger will be there and we'll see those temperatures reaching up to 86 degrees. follow me on i'm @karihallweather. get information for the festival. the garlic festival will be hot this weekend but not as hot as it has been. headed over to mike, you have a note for the south bay. >> exactly that same note. you talk about the gilroy garlic festival because it won't be quite as hot as we sometimes see, maybe more people out there. keep that in mind, crowds for 101 south of the 85 merge with that freeway, the bay shore freeway will be down here, past the 152 split, so this is where

folks know you head to casa de fruita. the garlic festival is in this area and there will be congestion on the streets. if you're trying to do anything else in gilroy, keep that in mind. trying to come down from san jose, also keep that in mind. cal train we talked about that, they have the garlic train saturday and sunday, good option to ride but very limited service. over here, limited amounts of traffic and that's why it's going so nicely through contra costa county. east shore freeway moving nicely through richmond. backup at the bay bridge, toll plaza folks pausing to pay cash we'll see how that shapes up. farther north the richmond bridge looks nice, these folks headed over from richmond into san rafael without delay. live look the peninsula no problem. you're at speed for the bay shore freeway and 280, this is palo alto over my shoulder. you know that, back to you. coming up next, 5:21, a rare homecoming for beatles legend, the concert making internet

forecast. >> it will be a warm day but coming down from the high heat we started this week with. live look in dublin, mostly clear skies and clouds drifting by as you make your way to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station, upper 50s, and warming up fast in the low 80s by noon. here is a look at all of our microclimates and the high temperatures for today with concord reaching 95. 85 in san jose, 70 in oakland and 66 in san francisco. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend in about seven minutes. mike, you're getting some clues on your commute. >> use anything i can to get an edge to our drivers. the cash lane starting a backup heavier than we see much of the earlier days this week. friday lighter traffic flow but a burst folks trying to get in early so they can get out early. we saw it settle down the fast track lanes the metering lights are on. this lasts about a half hour and it will probably ease off at the toll plaza. we see a smooth flow of traffic

so coming over into the maze, farther back over here, highway 4 shows no slowing so that means there will not be a big build over the next 15 minutes there, just coming through and it is smooth right now for 24. smooth drive for the rest of the bay, there's the south bay and the peninsula over here, a little slowing both directions for 580 into and out of the altamont pass but despite that flow westbound you still have a half hour from grant line to the dublin interchange. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 5:31. back to the breaking news we've been following all morning long on "today in the bay." people living in and around reading and shasta county are running for their lives. wildfires burning out of control. "today in the bay" pete suratos is live in courte madera where bay area firefighters left overnight to help crews up north. they have quite the fight in front of them, pete. >> reporter: yes, that's right, laura, quite the fight indeed. the fire tripled in size, the carr fire tripling in size since monday.

firefighters here from corte madera heading up north to help contain this fire. according to cal fire saying there's about 1700 fire personnel already on the ground near reading, fighting the carr fire. let's show you new video, what you guys are looking at is what people are doing with right now in the reading area, you see that home caught on fire, that home as well as dozens of others homes destroyed as a result of the carr fire. you're seeing a neighborhood up in flames. the fire began on monday and officials say it was initially caused by a mechanical failure of a car. fire officials say it was the wind, hot temperatures and humidity yesterday are why this fire is growing in size. the fire tearing through the small communities of shasta and kessewick before jumping the sacramento river and reaching near the reading area. the fire already hat more than 28,000 acres so far, only at 6% containment. one bulldozer operator on the fire lines has been killed. pfeiffer fighters and civilians

investors. >> and then there's a general sense among a lot of people that facebook has made a lot of mistakes, and so there's anger toward the company so i think it just all coalesced in one terrible day for them on wall street. >> not only did facebook lose more than $100 billion in value, mark zuckerberg's net worth fell by about $17 billion. now many on wall street do not believe zuckerberg's ceo position is in jeopardy. it's 5:35 right now. confirmation west nile virus is in central contra costa county. three chickens tested positive in martinez. not just the east bay, two dead crows tested positive in sunnyvale and santa clara. mosquitos were found with the virus. overnight crews did mosquito fogging in the cities. good news, there hasn't been a human west nile case in the south bay since 2016. in san francisco another headache for commuters beyond

the usually delays and kruds. mounie says it has an operator shortage. the reason is training issues. operators are getting new lessons on trains and buses as well as a new radio system. shuttles for the twin peaks tunnel project are running as well and they're training new operators they can run the scheduled services. some buses aren't hitting the streets which officials say means longer wait times. >> for instance, like one california might see a bus removed from that line to one of the smaller commuting lines and that might mean someone might have to wait longer or might have a fuller bus on the one california. >> the good news, it won't last forever. muni says delays in crowding will last a few more weeks. operators will return to regular duty when the twin peaks tunnel project is complete at the end of next month. >> already, we look forward to that. right now we're looking at the friday commute. little blip shows up behind me,

that's san jose and typical any day of the week, any weekday, any commute day of the week we see that burst. it's already moving better in the last five minutes. smooth flow of traffic through cocoa county, there's concord and richmond coming off of san pablo and westbound 80, basically at speed. the toll plaza just shows that little backup starting to form and you see the orange sensors show on the incline. live look outside shows you how things shape up. there's fremont 880 southbound past those truck at the top of the screen, northbound equally smoothly at the limit, all the way through oakland and the other side of the bay there's palo alto, tail lights north past the construction, working on the willow pass off-ramp and all the neighborhood is really congested so that will be a problem for the foreseeable future. >> getting used to it now. >> you know what i could get used to is hey, it's friday. by 12:00 noon we're out of here and start our weekend. >> we start our weekend, a lot going on, live music and festivals and a wide range in temperatures, as you make plans

for the weekend, maybe you're going to music on the square, redwood city, we'll have quite a few festivals in redwood city this weekend so we're going to have some beautiful weather. lot of sunshine, we'll be at 80 degrees at 4:00 to 5:00, as you get your spot at the courthouse square for the live music, and then it cools down nicely. your saturday forecast will range in temperatures from the upper 60s at the coast to 84 by the bay, and inland valleys at 89 degrees and more of the same on sunday, really not changing too much, just really spread out from the coast to the inland areas. gilroy garlic festival one of the bigger events this weekend, and it's going to be of course hot there, reaching 92 degrees, and i think if you find some shade, maybe find one of those misting stations, you'll have a great time and it's going to be all clear and sunny, so maybe wear a hat and some sunscreen. the kite festival happening in berkeley will be a place where you can find cooler temperatures. it will be in the low 60s at 10:00, and then as we go through the day, looking at about 70
