good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." nice to have you with us on wednesday morning. i don't know a ton about sports but if you lose a baseball game by three touchdowns, that is bad. >> i'm sure mets are waking up and thinking did that really happen? >> we asked the guys in the control room, what happened? they said these just bad. >> not their year. >> what a story there is, a fiery plane crash. when you see the pictures, smoking debris, you can't believe it but everyone on board survived. we're going to talk to a guy from chicago. he was on the plane and has a story to tell. let's get to tom costello. he has the latest on the crash. good morning. >> mexican authorities say 85 people injured and treated, mostly minor. for everyone to get out of a burning plane alive is pretty remarkable.

in mexico witnesses say they are amazed it wasn't much worse. shortly after takeoff, a packed aeromexico plane crashed into a field at the end of the runway in durango, mexico bursting into flames. amazingly more than 100 people survived including all four crew members. ten passengers who made it out alive are from the chicago area including an american priest, the director of our lady of guadalupe in des plaines. a statement from the amp diocese says alert and resting. another reached by our chicago station wmaq. she describes the terror when the plane went down. >> people were on top of each other and trying to get out. i grabbed my daughter's hand and some medicine that basically keeps her alive. i tried to get out with her. somebody literally pushed her back to get through. >> this woman interviewed on mexican television said she escaped by jumping through a

hole in the plane. i saw a lot of fire, she says, i don't know how people could get out. people showing aftermath of billowing flames. first responders can be seen helping passengers to safety. some able to walk away from the disaster on their own, others being carried out on stretchers. officials say it took emergency crews 15 minutes to get to the scene and start knocking down the fire. the flames engulfed the entire fuselage. the searing heat leaving the plane a gutted shell. flight 2431 was a 190 like this one. it departed from durango in northwest mexico headed to mexico city. around the time the plane took off, a violent storm through the area, rain coming in waves with fierce winds, even hail. the governor of durango said initial reports and weather was a factor adding the plane, after lifting suddenly, was affected by a gust of wind causing it to descend forcefully.

aeromexico says in a statement we deeply regret this accident and the families of those involved and affected are in our thoughts and prayers. one obvious question for investigators, given the very bad weather, why did the crew decide to take off in the first place. ladies. >> okay, tom. thank you. >> we are now joined by one of the survivors. alberto herera who was flying back home to chicago. alberto, good morning. describe those moments on the plane. often we've felt turbulence and thought, that's scary. put it in context. what was it feeling like up there? >> i've felt turbulence before. to put in weirdest terms, if you've heard of fire sense, you felt like something was wrong. at that point i just started out of instinct bracing for impact as the plane started jolting and

slammed into the ground. >> we know about the spidey sense when you feel like something is about to happen. when you hit the ground, we know that the plane started to burn. what did you see and hear next? >> essentially as the plane was hitting the ground, myself included, we started screaming. we didn't know what was going on, so we went to our first -- our first gut reaction. we were bracing for impact. once the actual plane stopped, we could see the flames on either side of the engine obviously because we hit the ground and kind of rolled -- not rolled but skidded. so basically the cabin just started filling with black smoke. at that point what we wanted to do was find the nearest exit. obviously as i was walking towards the back, i was checking the seats to see if anybody was

knocked out or anything, if they needed assistance to help drag out of the plane essentially. >> well, i don't have to tell you, alberto, it's incredible not only that you survived but that everyone survived. how are you thinking about that this morning? i know it's early but how do you feel? >> well, i was talking to one of my relatives last night. basically what -- i went into how can i help other people kind of mode. when i stepped out of the plane in the back, i stood there and i was helping the people that were behind me come down. yeah, the slide was there but you couldn't use the slide to slide down. the plane was at a weird angle where i could reach up and grab senior citizens as they wanted to exit the plane and help them come down or use my hands as kind of like a springboard to jump out kind of. i feel that it's kind of a

miracle that we all made it. so it's just a blessing i'm here to tell the story the next day. >> it is. it is a blessing. >> it certainly is. we're so happy you're okay and so happy everyone on that plane survived. alberto, thank you so much. >> any time, ladies. well, now we move to a disturbing warning from facebook. the social media giant said it has detected new efforts to use facebook to influence the upcoming midterm elections. while it isn't clear yet who is behind this, officials fear russia might be involved again. nbc national correspondent peter alexander at the white house with this story. peter, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. president trump yet to comment on this. a new round of what appears to be more russian interference according to leading lawmakers, facebook deleting dozens of suspicious political accounts and sounding the alarm that america's adversaries may be

trying to in flame divisions ahead of another election. with less than 100 days until the midterm elections, facebook says it's happening again. a coordinated campaign on the platform fueling deep divisions among americans. the social media giant working with fbi and others saying it can't say for sure who is behind the latest disinformation campaign but this morning lawmakers insist there's no doubt who is responsible. >> i can say with pretty high confidence, i think this is russian related. >> republican lindsey graham endorsing new sanctions against the kremlin. >> the sanctions bill from hell and any other country who is trying to interfere with our election should suffer the same fate. >> facebook announcing it's removed 32 pages and accounts from instagram one called resisters, a counter-protest against upcoming white nationalist in d.c. urging activists to bring medical

that interferes in u.s. elections. >> any attempt to interfere in our elections is a direct attack on our democracy. it is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. >> peter, the creators of these fake accounts, are they using the same method they were using in 2016. >> that's a good question. facebook says there were some similarities. they say whoever set up these accounts went further to disguise their identities than the russian-based firm did ahead of the 2016 election. that's what facebook sheryl sandberg was referring to in my piece, security is an arms race. facebook is changing its tactics now to keep up with those spreading disinformation. >> all right. peter alexander. peter, thank you. the president calling for voters to show photo id when they go to polls. the remark came at a rally in tampa, florida. he was talking about the idea of noncitizens voting in elections when he raised some eyebrows with this statement.

>> the time has come for voter id. if you go out and you want to buy groceries you need a picture on a card. you need id. >> photo ids are required for some purchases at the grocery store like alcohol and cigarettes but not everything else. the president in tampa to promote campaign of two florida republicans ahead of that state's primary. the president's former campaign chairman paul manafort is returning to court this morning for the first full day of his criminal trial. the only case brought by the special counsel robert mueller to go before a jury so far. correspondent pete williams is at a courthouse in alexandria. pete, good morning to you. what can we expect in court today? >> today the jury will hear from people who know about paul manafort's work overseas. that's what the trial is about, not about the three months he spent as trump's campaign chairman. prosecutors say he made millions doing political consulting work for the government of ukraine

and former president but say he stashed about $15 million of that income in foreign banks to avoid paying taxes on it, and they say he lied to get millions in loans an bank account loans on the deal in the u.s. >> pete up to now, we haven't really known what the defense might be. do you have a better idea of what they are going to argue? >> we heard about that here in court for the first time since mueller -- since manafort was arrested last fall. his lawyers say his problem was he trusted his right hand manned rick gates. they say gates hid the money from irs and he was embezzling money from the firm. he'll be a key witness. he pleaded guilty earlier this year and cooperating with prosecutors. >> pete, is the jury hearing anything about russian meddling and president trump because this trial isn't really about those things. >> the name donald trump was never spoken in court.

mueller's prosecutors say that the name russia will never even be spoken by any of their witnesses. it's likely that mueller wants to question manafort about that. if manafort is found guilty, they could try to compel him to talk about it. if on the other hand manafort is found not guilty, that would be a blow to mueller's prosecutors and undoubtedly embolden their critics. >> pete williams in alexandria. pete, thanks. new this morning, remains of service members handed over and on their way home. there was an overnight ceremony. now the very difficult process of identification is getting under way amid new tensions with north korea. keir simmons. >> hi. when you travel to north korea, they leave no doubt north korean war is so important to them. this is a big deal for north korea koreans, a big deal for american

we are back. at 7:30 on a wednesday morning. our crowd is saying, hey, a few rain drops, but i think it's drying up. it's august 1st and that's no word of a lie. it's the 1st of august. >> we will rent. >> it's the first of the month. morning, everybody. let's start with the headlines this morning and what a miracle in mexico. everybody on board survived after an aero mexico jet liner that was headed to mexico city crashed in a field on tuesday. the plane had actually just taken off in a blustery storm. the airport was in durango state. it went down, skidded to a stop.

it stayed intact, essentially, but burst into flames. all 103 people on the plane were able to get off before one passenger says the plane then just burned in a matter of seconds. >> wow. >> a federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order to stop a texas company from publishing blueprints on how to make un detectable 3d printed plastic guns. eight attorneys general filed a lawsuit monday seeking to block the federal government settlement that allows the company to make the plans available online. a u.s. district judge in seattle issued a restraining order tuesday, putting those plans on hold. two dozen cars were damaged or destroyed when a texas parking garage collapsed twice in one day. happened in the city of irving. a look at the aftermath there. you can see cars on top and underneath, giant slabs of concrete. one section of the garage collapsed just before noon on tuesday. the second section about five hours later. thankfully, nobody was hurt but,

charges related to the death of tim piazza. in the end, the judge spared the defendant from jail and this morning we're hearing from piazza's parents. >> the this morning, the distraught parents of timothy piazza are speaking out. >> it's never easy. it's never easy. because you just constantly reminded of what you lost. >> it's the first step. in some level of justice for tim being killed. >> ryan burke, the ex beta theta phi chair sentenced to 3 months of house arrest, 27 months of probation and 100 hours of community service. >> our hearts go out to the piazza family. but i think it's important that everybody understands that ryan burke is certainly not the cause. >> the prosecutors say he certainly played a role. the 21-year-old pleaded guilty in june to misdemeanor alcohol and hazing charges. he briefly apologized tuesday in open court. i am very sorry to the piazza's loss, he said. i am here today to accept responsibility for my actions.

i hope one day to be able to be forgiven. jim piazza has questioned burke's remorse. >> he's remorseful that he's in this situation. >> in a sentencing memo, the pennsylvania attorney general lambasted burke's behavior as seen on surveillance video from inside the house. prosecutors say burke is seen carrying piazza's limp body upstairs. while many brothers tended to mr. piazza as he lay unconscious on the sofa, the defendant appeared unconcerned. he is seen playfully hoist ago girl over his shoulders, jumping on the shoulder next to piazza, and rolling over and on top of piazza as he is getting up and leaving the roorm. prosecutors say no one called 911 until almost 12 hours after piazza first fell. his alcohol level, estimated to be up to four times the legal limit. piazza later died from trauma to his head and abdomen. >> we are trusting the justice system. >> piazza's parents have several

steps left in their son's case. with more than 20 other former fraternity brothers facing various charges, including hazing. >> i often think that there is this hand on my shoulder that's telling me to keep going, it will be okay. >> so hard for the parents. did the judge talk about the reasoning for this sentence? >> he did. he said that he was shocked by what happened, but because he knew there were many people involved that night, he said that it is incumbent upon them and he ruled those who were found guilty must pay the $27,000 funeral expenses for timothy piazza and those remaining defendants are now required to show up for a policemen hearing date scheduled later this month and a trial date set for early next year. >> it's a long road. morgan, thank you. turning now to a growing headache for youtube, growing false information about a-list celebrities that appear on the site. many are from a group called

politicians. all of this uncovered by nbc news.com. >> there were a couple of them with hundreds of thousands of views in less than five days. so we're talking millions of people and growing. >> their content is posted across social media platforms, including on a popular app that was recently banned from the apple app store. celebrities like roseanne and kurt schilling have pushed the group's bogus conspiracies on social media. the goal, to the discredit individuals who do not support the trump administration. >> this particular view is being pushed in part because of the malfunction in the internet where the wildest things gain traction. after nbc news contacted youtook, the search results changed with legitimate videos coming up first, but the conspiracy videos still show up further down in the search results. and youtube has not been taking them down, saying in part they have created tools to fix the problem, saying as these tools

start to apply more widely across youtube, we believe they will make authoritative content readily available and help address these types of results. but these false online conspiracies have real world consequences, beginning with pizza gate in 2016 when a man opened fire on a washington, d.c. pizza ria because ebled hillary clinton was running a child sex ring inside and more recently last month when a follower blocked the hoover dam with an armored vehicle. >> it's really just totally made up information, pushed by mat forms that don't know how to stop it. >> tom hanks and steven spielberg did not return our requests for comment and it's not just these celebrities and politicians who have been targeted. major corporations like the mexican giant simex have been hit by these, as well. so as for how youtube wants to weed out this material, they're telling me they're ranking, quote, authoritative new resources hiring your search results to users with click on

footprint. >> it's such a trend to go back and delete personal history. i say it doesn't matter if you're a celebrity in the spotlight or looking for that new job, your digital media presence, social media presence is a billboard to the world. it is the modern day cover letter. we think about people trying to comb through and find something on you. now social media in many cases social media, ten years of archives to search through. a search engine pulling up a key word that pops up early when somebody google's your name. this is a time to think, hey, do i need a digital cleanup. >> now i'm imagining tleegt twe -- deleting tweet by tweet. there's got to be a better way. >> on twitter, a big trend going back on all those tweets looking at the archive, what can be deleted from here. there's a program, tweet deleter, a limited subscription. a lot of my friends have used it, too.

it's worked quite well. it can go through batches and a whole time line and threat significant number of tweets or auto delete after a certain period of time. or bring out big guns, complete all at once. a lot of people, on trend, it's what they are looking for. >> what about facebook. is it difficult to erase facebook history. what if you want to keep some stuff, have your own record, but not public. >> a lot of people in that scenario. theres a chrome extension, kind of a tool to add to your web browser, use chrome. it's nice, it's caused social book post manager. what it does -- i've used this on my personal page for facebook. it can go through and in bulk actually delete a ton of posts. it can unlike and hide them. you can options. it's putting that power back into your own hands. if you're not ready to make the full delete, get rid of a batch of them. >> if you do want to save some memories, is there a way to have that middle ground. >> i'm surprised at a lot of people when they ask me, how do

i delete my facebook page, i have so many photos and comments on there and so many milestones. take advantage of both twitter, facebook and instagram. you can archive all of your content. a lot of people aren't aware of that. go into settings, they will send you a digital file, a zip file you can download and have all that right there. maybe that's the first step if you're not ready for a full on delete. >> there's really a simple step if you want to go big, just delete it. >> a lot of people are turning to reputation management. this is tangential than just deleting social media. if you have stuff you name when you delete it, pulls up articles you don't like or things said about you, there's a way to pull it down. i have to tell you it's typically not cheap. it can go $400 a month. i know who have wiped their history and it cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars range. reputation management, more about that as the world goes digital and online.
