officials here say 22 people remain hospitalized this morning, the fact that most of them have minor injuries and that all 103 on board survived the crash, nothing short of a miracle. this morning dramatic new video from aeromexico flight from 2431 outside the runway barely visible, inside as the plane violently slammed into the ground, the left engine bursting in flames. passengers terrified. >> the airplane hit the ground and began to bounce and go. it looks like we're in a box and somebody's shaking us. >> reporter: ashley garcia who took this video tweeted nothing can describe how i felt in that moment, the plane's four crew members being appraised with how they handled the emergency. >> the emergency protocols work very well. >> reporter: and is that a surprise because everybody trains but in the reality --

>> the real thing it's very different, so it's a miracle that we didn't have any one -- >> reporter: of the 65 americans on board the doomed flight, 15 were with father sanchez to mark a milestone for the illinois pastor. >> we all decided to go and celebrate my birthday. it was my 50th birthday. >> reporter: father sanchez speaking from his hospital bed escaped the burning plane with a broken arm and lacerations. >> i have to have a metal or titanium plate in my arm. >> reporter: the mexico flight was taking off from northwest mexico just a powerful storm blew through with heavy rain, high winds and hail. as the plane headed down the runway picking up speed, aviation experts say it may have been hit by a violent down draft known as a microburst. is it possible that a microburst, that the air pushing down forced the plane to crash? >> of course, its a possibility. >> reporter: the two black boxes

like these have been recovered and are now being analyzed. pastor parsa who took this heart stopping video says he's grateful to be alive. >> sometimes we take our life for granted and i'm so glad that i'm alive. >> i spoke to one of the passengers who helped a lot of people get off that plane, helped them to safety. i bet you there were a lot of heroes in that group. >> reporter: that's right. several passengers were able to make way up to the cockpit before it was engulfed in flames and they helped get the pilot out to safety. doctors say that he has some serious neck and some back injuries, but they do believe that he will fully recover. yes, indeed, this is amazing. 103 people walked away from a plane crash. hoda. >> all right. thank you. now to some of those fast moving developments in the russia investigation just overnight including investigations for a possible sit-down interview between the

president and the special counsel robert mueller and meantime the president on twitter is telling the attorney general jeff sessions to end the investigation. peter alexander at the white house for us this morning. hi, peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. robert mueller sending a letter to the president's legal team tuesday offering to limit the questions in order to nail down a presidential interview. that's according to people briefed on the matter. the president apparently not satisfied, though. the next morning teeing off on twitter, breaking boundaries followed by past presidents, pressuring the nation's top law enforcement official to shutdown an active investigation. president trump ignoring questions after his call to end the russia investigation, unloading on the investigation on a twitter tirade insisting that jeff sessions should stopped the rigged witch hunt right now.

the president's tweet storm coming after the president learning about the latest interview. the special counsel team is willing to narrow the range to two main topic areas, collusion. the president is eager meet with mueller's investigators to clear himself of wrongdoing despite opposition by his own legal team, three people briefed on the matter saying the president believes he can convince investigators they're inquiry is a witch hunt. democrats arguing the president's tweets at sessions have crossed a legal line. >> there is now, right now, a clearly credible case of obstruction of justice against the president of the united states. >> reporter: even some republicans warning the president to pull back. >> the president's tweet is unfortunate. i think its inappropriate for him to be commenting on an ongoing investigation. >> reporter: the white house is brushing off the backlash insisting president trump was only expressing his personal

view. >> it's not an order, it's the president's opinion. the president is not obstructing, he's fighting back. >> reporter: that argument echoed by mr. trump's lawyer rudy giuliani. >> he used the word should. he didn't use the word must. he didn't direct him to do it and he's not going to direct him to do it. put up or shut up, what do you got. >> reporter: mr. trump is constantly bashing sessions in private for recuse himself from the russia inquiry that he simply can't get sessions out of his mind but legal experts say there's no chance sessions, a former trump campaign adviser would reverse course and take back that recusal. >> on another subject, kind of related, paul manafort on trial, day three, can you give us a recap? >> reporter: yeah. that's right. mueller's prosecutors zeroing in on paul manafort's lavish lifestyle. some of the evidence presented, we'll show it to you, a $15,000 ostrich jacket.

also more than $18,000 python coat. prosecutors indicating that they expect to wrap up their case by next week. president trump's allies tell me watching the coverage on wednesday, lashing out on mueller complaining that his former campaign chairman tax fraud charge had nothing to do with him, that the charges are unrelated to the 2016 election. the president tweeting, why didn't the government tell me that he, manafort, was under investigation slamming this case, savannah as a hoax. >> okay. peter, thank you. also this morning, a manhunt is under way in houston for the now identified suspect in the murder of a cardiologist who once treated former president george h.w. bush. tammy leitner joins us with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. after two weeks of uncertainty, police now know who killed dr. mark hausknecht. its the man who lived in the house behind me but the big question this morning, where is he? police say this was a targeted

killing by a man who held a grudge. this morning, a manhunt for a person who police say is armed, dangerous and suicidal. this morning a manhunt under way. houston police zeroing in on joseph james papas who they say is armed and dangerous. >> we believe that this absolutely is the killer. >> reporter: police say papas targeted shot and killed mark hausknecht in broad daylight nearly two weeks ago possibly seeking revenge. >> the suspect's mother was the patient of a doctor and died during surgery over 20 years ago. >> reporter: police suggest the 62-year-old combined that grudge with preparation. >> there's a lot of planning. the shots he took took some skill. >> reporter: an autopsy shows dr. hausknecht was shot in the head, torso and left arm. police say the case broke open after people recognized papas in this newly released enhanced

surveillance video which brought in new tips. previous surveillance video shows the doctor biking to work in his scrubs being pursued by the suspect, also on a bike and wearing a hat and backpack. >> it's hard to believe. >> reporter: neighbors of the success pebt describe him as a quiet guy who took care of his yard. >> you don't expect your neighbor to be a murderer. >> reporter: police say papas hasn't been seen in up to two days and the last time anyone heard from him was on tuesday morning when he sent a suicidal text message. authorities searched his home wednesday morning. >> we have plenty of evidence. this man is dangerous. this man's capable. we know that he had firearms. >> reporter: hausknecht was a prominent cardiologist who's roster of patients included former president george h.w. bush who he treated for an irregular heartbeat in 2000. >> i do not think his life is imperil in any way. >> he's an expert on cardiology. >> reporter: hundreds of people

gathered over the weekend to celebrate the life of the doctor who they remember as a healer, commit today compassion and service. >> he was a great guy and didn't have an enemy in the world. >> they're trying to learn more about the suspect and one of the pieces of the puzzle is he has a background in law enforcement? >> reporter: that's right. i can confirm this morning that joseph james papas works as a deputy who was in law enforcement for about 30 years. guys, back to you. >> all right. tammy, thank you. now to an emotional ceremony happening in hawaii overnight the remains of u.s. service members from the korean war now back on american soil. nbc keir simmons has been following this for us. >> hi. imagine being one of those families, you haven't had news for 70 years, 70 years, these are the unknown soldiers from a war that the american families who lost loved ones have never

forgotten and are hoping that their loved ones will be unknown no more. >> reporter: a solemn ceremony, 55 flag draped caskets back on u.s. soil after nearly 70 years. the remains of presumed american soldiers arriving in hawaii with full military honors, each one accompanied by one marine, one sailor, one soldier and one airman. the containers gently placed on risers and emotional onlookers wept. >> some have called the korean war the forgotten war, but today we proved these heroes were never forgotten. today our boys are coming home. >> reporter: in a series of tweets, president trump calling it a beautiful ceremony and thanking north korean leader kim jong-un for keeping his promise sending home our great and beloved missing fallen.

they were also husbands, fathers, brothers and neighbors. long gone but never lost to the memory of their loved ones. soon we will know their names and we will tell their stories of courage. >> reporter: nearly 8,000 u.s. service members are st at unaccounted for from the korean war. today, some of them are finally back home. >> today, as a nation, we breathe a word of thanks for your service and sacrifice and we say to you as one people with one voice, welcome home. >> they will examine dental records and dna, process that will likely take months, perhaps years. there are all of those political questions about what's happening in north korea, about their nuclear capability but i feel

like this was a moment to put politics aside and just think about the personal stories of those families. >> some resolution i hope for those families. thank you. >> we do have a lot more to get to including bombshell allegations rocking the world of college football. one of the sports highest paid coaches placed on paid administrative leave as the university investigates what he knew about a domestic abuse scandal involving one of his top assistants. >> reporter: that assistant coach was fired in july now smith's former wife says she believes meyer was aware of the violence against her and did nothing about it. the school deciding wednesday to remove the popular and incredibly successful coach just weeks before the start of the college football season. one of the most storied programs in college football history side lining its legendary head coach. on wednesday the ohio state university placing urban meyer

on paid administrative leave this after text messages and photos surfaced raising the possibility he knew about accusations of domestic violence against his former assistant coach zack smith three years ago and did not report them. nbc news has not verified those texts. coaches are required to report knowledge of intimate violence until title 9. >> if meyer did violate these contracts, then i think they'll have no other option but to dismiss him as head coach. >> reporter: the story reported by college football writer brett mcmurphy offers evidence about police reports dating back in 2015 in ohio. among that evidence, text messages from zack smith's ex-wife to the wife of coach ush be meyer who showed her bruised and bleeding and pleading for help. she told coach myers' wife shelly about the abuse. >> in 2015, i came forward with it. i told shelly, i sent her some pictures. you spoke to her on the phone.

she was going to have to tell irvin. i said that's fine. you should tell irvin. >> did she ever come back to you and tell you that she did tell irvin? >> she did not. she did not. she would reach out to me, ask me how i'm doing, tell me she was worried, you know, that if i needed anything she was there, asked me if i had gotten a protective order. >> reporter: college football fans reacting to the news. >> this goes behind sports. it's not just about football. it's about doing what's right. >> coach meyer issued a statement through the university that reads in part, i agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion. i eagerly look forward to the resolution of this matter. he also addressed the charges last week after the firing of the assistant coach. >> i was never told about anything, never anything came to light. i never had any conversation about it, so i know nothing about that. >> reporter: all these people

have all this information, yet irvin meyer somehow doesn't know about this, i find that impossible to believe. smith's lawyer said in a statement, that zack wants to be as honest and transparent as possible. he went on to tell the columbus dispatch that even though advised his client to be upfront about the domestic violence charges with his boss, he did not tell coach meyer. nbc news has reached out to all of the parties involved in these allegations, but did not hear back. the university did, however, release a statement saying it would not comment on the smith situation calling it a personnel matter. you can see the full interview with courtney smith on watch stadium.com. >> thank you. it is 7:18. first chance to get the weather from al. good morning. >> good morning, guys. we're looking at more wet weather from the florida panhandle all the way up into the northeast. right now flash flood watches and warnings, 34 million people at risk for those.

this is a slow moving system that is stationary fronts eventually going to wash out as will the cold fronts. once all this ends up, but we're looking at a flood threat continuing today into tomorrow but the good news is the risk gets lower as we get into the weekend, but rainfall amounts in the northeast still continue to reach anywhere from two to three inches per hour but the big numbers are going to pile up as we get down to the south from virginia all the way down to the panhandle of florida. we're talking two to four inches but some areas could see six to eight inches of rain by tomorrow. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

the plane record ed the sights and sounds of the chaos as it came down in rough weather. the flight crew is being praised for the way it handled that emergency. investigators are going through the plane's debris for clues. >> there are so many wildfires burning and new zoeld and australia are sending firefighters to help out. the latest fire quickly raced through 10,000 acres in oregon, crossed a major highway, and is threatening homes. mandatory evacuation orders have been issued. air tankers will be back in the sky this morning, hoping to give ground crews a boost. the national fire preparedness level is now at five. that's the highest and most severe level. the coast guard says a duck boat that sank near brans yom, missouri, last month was operating when the wind speed was twice the allowable level. the accident killed 17 people, 9 of them, you'll remember, from the same family. witnesses said the lake did appear calm when the boat headed

out, but the storm was in the forecast. the ntsb reports the wind speed hit more than 70 miles an hour. the coast guard said the boat wasn't supposed to be on the water if the winds topped 35 miles an hour or waves were higher than two feet. an explosion was caught on camera. it damaged an apartment, but happily, the family was able to escape unharmed. check this out. they were sitting in a room where an electric scooter was being recharged. this happened in beijing. smoke starts to seep out of the charger. then when a man goes to try to unplug it, look at that. >> wow! >> the smoke gets really heavy. he picks up his young daughter, runs out of the room and seconds later, the scooter explodes. the fire was put out before it could spread to other apartments. officials say that scooter had been plugged in for about seven hours. >> wow. also this morning, there is new information coming to light in the desperate search for a university of iowa student missing now for more than two weeks. and we are hearing from her boyfriend for the very first time. nbc's blake mccoy is in brooklyn, iowa, with the latest.

hey, blake. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. that boyfriend is significant because he is the last person to hear from ally before she disappeared. new this morning, we are also learning of a possible mollie sighting last week in missouri, giving the family hope that she's still alive. >> she's sweet, kind, extremely lovable. it's really hard not to like her. >> reporter: 20-year-old dalton jack describing mollie tibbetts, his girlfriend of three years who vanished without a trace more than two weeks ago. >> initially, it was shock. and then, you know, it gets harder day by day because she's still not here. and you miss her. you miss her more than anything in the world. >> reporter: overnight, hundreds gathered at a vigil for the missing university of iowa student last seen on her nightly jog in the small town of brooklyn. mollie's family believes she returned to the house jack shares with his brother and used the computer, but investigators remain tight-lipped on the timeline of her disappearance. do you believe she disappeared on the run or after she returned

home? >> well, i mean, that's one of those details that i'm not going to discuss today. >> reporter: overnight, nbc news confirming police responded to a possible sighting of mollie at this truck stop in western missouri late last week. it remains unclear if it resulted in any leads. as the tireless search for mollie intensifies, investigators hope data from her fitbit may provide clues to her whereabouts. >> we are looking at all technology as it relates to mollie, and we are looking to generate leads based on that technology. >> reporter: investigators do not consider mollie's boyfriend, jack, a suspect. he was working a construction job 100 miles away from dubuque. jack says he hasn't heard from mollie since that night when she sent him a snapchat message. >> i opened it at about 10:30, and then i promptly fell asleep. >> reporter: jack now holding out hope for her safe return. >> the only thing that comes into your head whenever you're not investigating, you don't
