rg3 was a little more advanced. got a better offensive line in front of him. but there is work to do. and i think that for the ravens, the best thing that can happen to them is to allow lamar jackson to sit and watch for a while. how long that takes. whether or not he takes over for joe flacco. who knows. as of today, not much of a quarterback controversy. >> al: gets wrapped up there at the 30. it will be third down. they take another time-out. tom benson. used to be known as foster stadium. tom benson spent a lot of money to reconstruct it and put a lot of money into the hall of fame. tom passed away. the long time owner of the new

seattle is a monday nighter. late afternoon game because they are in arizona. almost every other game on the schedule noon central time. >> cris: that was a very winnable play that time by tyler bray. he took a big shot and that should have been a first down. the ball slipped through the fingers of thompson. he really hung in there. with all of the flags we have seen thrown, that could have been. watch him hang in here and deliver the ball and really hits the receiver right in the hands. i think that will be a penalty as well. eric weddle. that is a beauty. he is proud of that one.

we're on in primetime because of tonight's preseason football game. we begin with the exhausting fight koncontinuing tonight. communities remain threatened. you're looking at new video just into the newsroom, showing an air attack on the lake fire. we have team coverage on the fires across the state. we begin with sergio quintana. sergio, update us on what you know. >> reporter: well, that video you were showing was where we were for a good part of the afternoon. i want to show you where it was burning. that is the river fire. the smoke has come down a little bit because the temperatures have dropped. but the fire was burning just a couple miles that way for much of the afternoon. we watched as crews threw everything they had at this fire. one of the biggest assets they brought in, the jumbo jet fire

retardant bomber. by air and on the ground, crews did everything possible to protect homes on scotts valley road. we talked with one man who, as the fire advanced, he continued to clear out brush with his tractor. the fire was burning over the ridge from his house. are you concerned it's going to jump anytime soon? >> no. no. i think they've got it pretty well under control. i'm a fireman myself. so, i'll put the gear on when it comes time. >> reporter: he did have his fire gear nearby. a couple miles down scotts valley road where we saw the intense firefight, we noticed one house that burned. right now, the river fire is at 41,278 acres. it is 50% contained. of course, this is part of the mendocino complex, which is actually two fires. the second fire that's part of this complex is called the ranch fire.

you can see it right over there, just north of lake fire. it is at 83,000 acres, 33% containment. reporting live in lake county, sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> it looks calm up there. what kind of conditions are crews dealing with? for that and a new warning about to hit the bay area, let's check in with jeff raineri. >> we expect the winds to pick up in the next 24 to 36 hours. that's what the added worry is right now for firefighters. anyone that is close to the river or the ranch fires, you will be under a red flag fire warning once we hit tomorrow. most of the growth in the ranch fire was on the northern side. for the river fire, also on if northern side. a temperature of 80, it has cooled down. not that windy. winds out of the west at 9. 93 degrees, we could get guests

up to 40 miles per hour for the highest ridge tops. and it is because of that increasing wind, occasional wind gusts, 15 to about 40 miles per hour. we have a brand-new red flag fire warning in effect from upper lake all the way down to middletown. all of these areas here, could see those gusty winds. we want to reiterate, both of the fire zones, in the mendocino complex fire zone will be in this red flag fire warning. we're tracking the smoke and how it's going to impact the bay ae area tomorrow. technology created here in san jose could be key in helping to plan the attack on the fire that's devastating shasta county. we go to san jose where a one-of-a-kind fire laboratoryn wheels being used to help firefighters. >> reporter: we're here at san

jose state university, which is on the edge of land fires. this is the mobile fire lab. crews got it ready to deploy tomorrow. it can get up close and personal to gather crucial data, which it did at the carr fire. researchers are preparing to hit the road, loading up the fire weather research laboratory, with weather equipment, centered around a dopplar unit. and help forecast weather behavior. >> measuring the fire on the fire front is critical to understand where it may go. >> reporter: the mobile aspect of your unit here is helpful, huh? >> yeah. this is the only mobile profiling system in the u.s. that's aimed at wildfire research. >> reporter: the lab just returned from the carr fire, a fire destructive and instructive, with its deep unpredictable smoke layers and

133-mile-per-hour winds. clement took this picture that showed the twisting power of a fire that creates its own weather. it helps firefighters make a fast decision on whether to drop the fire retardant. it takes us five minutes to get it going and data back to the computers. that's as quickly as we got the information to say, there's 10 now, feet of smoke here, you shouldn't fly. >> reporter: matthew brewer, a former firefighter, helping wild land firefighters. >> i'm giving them real-time data. making sure everyone stays safe. >> reporter: the lab will head out to northern california, where there is so much fire activity. and they will find out where cal fire and other agencies want them to go, while they are on their way, another advantage to being mobile. live inhanda. >> thanks, robert.

if you're joining us now, we're in primetime this evening because of the football game that played before this. we want to update you on the fires burning in california. let's talk about the enormous and deadly carr fire, roaring near reading. it continues to devour acre after acre. six dead, including two firefighters. more than 125,000 acres charred. that's equal to four-times the size of san francisco. more than,000 home 1,000 homes around redding, gone. many of the home you knowners aa center. 40 agencies on-site helping people there with things like insurance. how do they get their records. short-term housing. the carr fire at this point, as you heard robert y, contained. this new video in tonight. it is a somber procession

through redding. fire trucks escorting the body of jeremy stoke. his body was transported to a funeral home ahead of the memorial service for him this weekend. new at 8:00, unsettling discovery in a quiet mill valley neighborhood. police say they found a potent drug in a home, a home that was also being used as an illegal day-care center. nbc bay area spoke to the woman running the now-closed day-care center. >> it wasn't part of my day care. my day care is fine. everything is good. >> reporter: everything is not fine for the mulholland family if you ask mill valley police. police officers swarmed this house on meadow drive and arrested this man, hank mulholland. >> it's my son. >> reporter: investigators believe the 27-year-old stole $17,000 worth of merchandise from supermarkets and drugstores. when investigators searched the

home, they found fentanyl, a drug 100-times more powerful than morphine. >> they found it in his wallet. >> in his car. >> in his car. >> reporter: they also discovered that betsy mulholland was running a day care in the home. >> the people living in the house were never really friendly. it is odd that people running a day care would be unfriendly with neighbors. >> reporter: photos listed show toddlers playing with toys and a minijungle gym. >> the whole place is a mess. and it seems an odd place to run a day care. >> reporter: he says his wife did have state license to run a day-care center. but she was not aware that the city of mill valley required a business license, as well. and he tells me, both parents are sorry they allowed hank to stay at the home. a cozy community, rocked by a shocking discovery. in mill valley, nbc bay area

news. nbc bay area responds to a mother who faced a bill, a staggering bill, just days after her husband died. >> she contacted our consumer team for help. chris is here now with the insurance mess. >> we have helped a lot of people with health insurance problems. what stood out with this one was the timing of this one. really unfortunate timing. a terrible, life-changing loss, followed by a huge, surprise bill. and then, an aggressive demand to pay it quickly. >> so many people liked him. >> reporter: april bridescribesr husband as a devoted father. >> he learned how to play "happy birthday" on the bagpipes. >> reporter: a man who enjoyed some quirky hobbies. >> he rode a unicycle. >> reporter: he often rode this big-wheel bicycle around, too.

earlier this year he was in great health for a 54-year-old. just weeks later, he collapsed while on a run. >> he was the epitome of health. to have this happen to him, of all people. >> reporter: it was a heart attack. steve was gone. but then, quickly, another shock. while sympathy cards were still pouring in, april got an unexpected letter from their health insurance company. >> as soon as i notified them that my husband passed away, they sent me a bill for $9,600. >> reporter: april undercharging the family for more than two years. now, they planned to collect. >> they expected me to pay all of these past premiums they had never billed me for. and when i enquired about it, they said, we'll file a grievance. but we expect you to pay these bills. >> reporter: steve died just 19 days earlier.

but they gave her two weeks to pay the money. if not, the policy could be canceled. that's when she turned to us. we reached out to blue shield of california. it declined to comment, citing privacy rules. but april tells us that within days, the bill was cleared. >> i knew if i didn't come this route, the insurance company would hassle me and expect me to cover a bill they had decided all of a sudden that i needed to pay. >> reporter: can insurance companies demand additional money from your family after you paid your premium? the state said, no, they can't. what happened with april? we're not entirely sure. we encountered the same red tape april faced. she's fears other families h faced the >> there's probably someone out same ordeal. there thait. they may have lost their health care as a result of it. and that's wrong. >> a final note here. all health insurance companies

6 year old girl in a san guilty. that's the verdict for a former uber driver who killed a 6-year-old girl in a san francisco intersection. the crash happened new year's eve of 2013, at the corner of polk and ellis streets.

they said muzaffar hit sophia liu with her mother and brother. today, the jury found him guilty of vehicular manslaughter. san francisco's d.a. spoke about the verdict late this afternoon. >> we prefer to focus on prevention and hopefully dededer rens. we have, you know, families have been destroyed by his actions. >> the family filed suit against uber, claiming he was using the app at the time. uber denied that, saying he was not working for them at the time of the accident. that suit was settled out of court. covering up the work of vandals. muralists spent the day fixing the caesar chavez mural.

"crazy rich asians" opens in theaters august 15th. >> thank you. i see a movie night ahead for all of us. we should go together. >> we can have dinner beforehand. >> we need to bring janelle. we have the connection. >> she's our leader. our weather forecast, it was nice today. a lot of blue sky for the bay area. look for warmer temperatures tomorrow. the thing i want to start off with tonight is the smoke. while we have had relatively clear skies for most of the bay, we're seeing a change in the wind on friday. that would bring in more smoke particles and haze. the upper-level winds would carry the thickest and the most dangerous smoke off to the east. but we're looking at the surface winds, pushing down smoke for the bay area. tomorrow morning's forecast, less in the way of fog but we'll see patchy clouds on the coast. that's brings us to 57 in the peninsula. across the north bay, 57.

san francisco, a chilly 53. and patchy clouds and 56. i see a three-degree to six-degree warming tomorrow. that puts us back in the mid-90s, ail gilroy, 94. you're not too bad in downtown san jose, 85, with the breeze moving in off the bay. over to the east bay, i warmed it up in antioch, pittsburg, concord, with mid-90s returning. by the bay, looking good oakland to hayward and 70s. we have sunshine in the prin peninsu peninsula. we'll have 80 in redwood city and 65 in daily city. the ocean breeze will be lingering. that's 63 at the outer sunset. and 68 for the mission. in the north bay, 86 in sonoma. 89 in napa. as you get closer to the fires, ukiah will be at 94.
