lot better. hopefully they're okay. as far as your bridge drive times right now, we're not seeing major slowing, westbound 80 towards the bay bridge, eight minutes. westbound 92 towards the san mate2obr minutes. westbound 84, about 10 minutes. thank you. new this morning, firefighters are still on the scene of a small grass fire in fremont. they put it out before it caused any major damage. it started after midnight near the vallejo mill historic park. there are some homes in the area, but firefighters say those homes were never in any serious danger. firefighters across the state are in northern california trying to contain several moving wildfires that are burning right now. let's get to the latest on the mendocino complex fire. there are new evacuation orders underway as flames move further east. the fire has consumed more than 125,000 acres. it's 39% contained.

in shasta county, some folks are being allowed to returner to their neighborhoods. "today in the bay" reports from one of those communities just cleared for return. >> reporter: good morning. i'm at the sunset development in r r this homeowner couu n see the fa is completely singed. this went all the way along the perimeter of his house, got the trees up there. skipped the home and then burned the fence on the other side. but the structure itself is fine. now, families walk through barricades to go and see what was left of their home, the varying states of disrepair. an entire street here was wiped out. >> we're very thankful and very

blessed that we came back and it was like this. that was all. this can be repaired. i can live in the house. i'm not injured. my wife's not injured. friends and neighbors are not injured. we can handle that. >> reporter: at nearby shasta high school, which was turned into a makeshift local assistance center, displaced people came for insurance questions, money, permits, peace of mind. even those who lost their homes tried to keep things in perspective. >> i look at this as a big bummer, not a tragedy in our lives. people lost their lives. people lost their homes. people, you know -- we're alive, we're well. we have a community that's helping us out. >> rtehis week and brought the city manager up from san jose to pick his brain. an important lesson learned, not to repopulate too quickly. reporting from redding, sam

brock. just as firefighters start to gain some ground on those wildfires, wind is expected to pick up in the burn areas, potentially fuelling those flames. what can we expect today? >> unfortunately, not good news. we have red flag warnings going up around the carr fire from today through 11:00 saturday. gusty, dry north winds which will also keep humidity levels low and temperatures up at night around redding. we'll see gusty winds increasing from 3:00 to 7:00 this evening. as the wind speeds accelerate, notice the direction to our north, out of the northwest. that's the reason why the bay area air quality management has an advisory out.

spotted him walking on market street. he's facing aggravated assault charges. the santa clara county coroner needs your help identifying this man. this is a sketch. he was found dead in a car on indian wells court back on june 19th. he's described as hispanic and in his early to mid20s. he was found wearing a royal blue jacket. he had on dark colored shorts, blue socks and shoes. authorities say one man is in custody on theft and drug charges after a bust at his home was used as an unauthorized daycare center. authorities investigating a burglary and grand theft case went to the home with a search warrant. they say part of the home was being used for unauthorized daycare but no children were there at the time of the arrest. two people were arrested in connection with high profile robberies.

police say 51-year-old susan mattson broke into a middle school last month. plus, 31-year-old eric lewis has been arrested and is charged with robberies in vallejo, martinez and venetia. don't be alarmed if you see police activity near piner high school today. santa rosa police are conducting their final active shooter training deal. emergency responders are expected to be in the area of fulton road this morning all the way through 5:00 tonight. the high school is going to be off limits. the exercise is not expected to impact traffic in the area. school time is fast approaching. hopefully the kids are sleeping through that bad news. one south bay non-profit hopes to outfit students. >> here's a photo showing them preparing for today's head to toe backpack give away. some 1,800 children will receive

prompted evacuations in the valley. the national weather service issued a warning about the dust storm as it moved into the area at about 20 miles per hour causing sky harbor airport to delay or cancel more than 100 flights. families rebuilding from the north bay wildfires may face unforeseen hurdles because of what is considered a serious shortage in construction workers. about 20% of the construction workforchee state over the last decade. nearly half of california's construction job postings do not get filled for at least six weeks. they say the problem is even worse in the north bay where there is now incredibly high demand. firefighters on the front lines of the carr wildfire found an unusual pair of survivors. the crew from grass valley say an injured cat and an injured chicken did not want to separate, even after they were

across the inland locations are starting to climb towards the 90s just after noon today. bay side, not much change. just enough of a sea breeze to keep temperatures from san francisco to oakland staying in the 60s and 70s. a look at today's temperatures. mid 80s around downtown san jose. more likely now to find 90s east of 680 as we get over towards concord. walnut creek. livermore, pleasanton, still mid nd 70s in oakland. high pressure giving up a little bit of ground towards sunday. we'll see an area of high pressure approach the coast, but not as strong as we thought before. just a slight downward trend in temperatures as we get into sunday. look what happens here, high pressure builds back towards california, which means not just 90s in reach, but we'llel find temperatures inland by next tuesday and wednesday approaching close to 100 degrees. the seven-day forecast for forecast, the same trend of fog

welcome back. 5:24 on your friday morning. california is joining a lawsuit against the federal government to block the release of blueprints that show how to make 3-d printed plastic guns. those blueprints were set to be released on the internet as part of a settlement between the trump administration and a texas based company. on tuesday, a federal judge in seattle temporarily blocked the release of those blueprints. a total the district of columbia are part of that lawsuit. a warning to parents this morning, a minnesota family wants you to know the dangers of online gaming after their 8-year-old was convinced to share their personal information. charlie pearson was playing a popular online game fortnite with teammates from out of state. he said late one night the other gamers convinced him to share his mother's personal information.

and there's not much of an alternative route if you're going to be driving through that area. i'll have an update coming up in just a bit. today is expected to be a gut wrenching day in oakland as friends and family say their final good bye to nia wilson. she's the 18-year-old murdered while standing on a b.a.r.t. platform last week. her killing rocked the bay area. we're live in oakland with how people plan to honor her life today. >> reporter: later this morning at 11:00, the family of nia wilson will hold a private funeral here at the full gospel church here in east oakland. this is after a private viewing that was held yesterday at a funeral home at another part of town. that's where a number of people showed up to pay their last respects for this 18-year-old woman who was stabbed to death last month while boarding a train with her sisters at the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station. since last thursday, a group of

the mendocino fire. the fire is 39% contained. fires i should say. more than a dozen homes are destroyed and that number could grow today as the winds pick up in those fire zones. now to the carr fire burning in shasta county where nearly a thousand homes are just gone. menlo park firefighters are sending a drone to the area to take a closer look. we're live in menlo park with what they're expecting to see. you know there is a lot of damage to see, but this has got to be an interesting perspective. >> reporter: it will be. good morning. there's over 17 wildfires burning in california. as you mentioned, therr 125,000 acres. to give you some perspective, that's an area larger than the size of th 1,000 homes have bee part of the assessment will be to include using drones. destroyed.

the fire department has eight drones. it's one of the first fire departments to adopt drone technology back in 2014. fighting these fires has been a challenge, and so will clean up. given the damage it can be difficult to get crews into some neighborhoods. the drones provide a 360 degree aerial view. the drones also have thermal imaging cameras, that's a huge asset, especially when dealing with these fires. some parts the smoke has been so thick it's been hard for firefighters to even see just a few feet in front of them. and drones can also help victim. before sending boots on the ground into potentially dangerous areas, drones will help officials develop a strategy. it's not just the drones, over 200 new firefighters have been brought in just yesterday between the carr fire in redd g

"today in the bay." thank you. >> we have new developments on a murder investigation in coun co -- concord. they say terence boyd dixon killed a 64-year-old a week ago at the victim's home on pine creek way. police don't have a motive for the killing. the victim's car was stolen and they believe that the suspect you just saw is driving it. here's a picture of the car. it's a 2013 hyundai velociter. dixon is considered armed and dangerous. you're urged to contact police if you see him or the car. break in the case, police say they have the person responsible for stabbing a man several times in a strip mall

parking lot last month. this is video of the scene back on july 3rd. police say hector gomez walked up to a victim who was seated inside a car and stabbed him. that victim flagged down a driver to ask for help. he survived. gomez is facing assault with a deadly weapon charge. a south bay business owner said he got an odd call demanding a lot of cash. it seemed so legitimate, he's worried that other folks will fall for the scam. the owner of aborn pharmacy says a man from pg&e called and threatened to cut off his power. he checked the it appears it was a call from the utility company. he followed the caller's request, grabbed cash, walked across the street to convert it to a gift card and drop it in the mail. >> i said this smells fishy. i called pg&e and they say this nothing but a scam. >> it was a scam. pg&e says it will never show up

at your business or home requesting immediate payment. if you are past due, you'll get a letter in the mail. if you're not sure who is calling you about a power bill, hang up and call the utility. pg&e says scammers are using technology to trick customers and caller ids into thinking it's their number. don't use gift cards. happening tomorrow, the first of two dayatis of b.a.r.t closures. workers will be working on 19th street and lake merrit stations. there will be two special event trains from san francisco serving as fans headed to the colosse colosseum. this is the first of several weekends of similar closures between now and the heend of september. it's 5:38. after a rough start this morning, we're seeing an area that needs to recover after an earlier crash.

youth migrant shelter in mesa is accused of molesting eight immigrant boys. these are boys who were in u.s. custody after being separated from their families. according to documents, that worker molested eight children. managed to work there for four months without ever having any kind of background check. happening today, the first of two benefit events for victims of last fall's north bay firestorm. tonight and tomorrow's events benefit a relief fund helping fire victims. tonight's event include community storytelling. tomorrow night, there is an acoustic event featuring bonny hunt and country music star brad paisley. each event gets underway at 7:30 at sonoma state's green music
