"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning, everyone, thank you for joining us on this friday morning. >> it's going to be a rough one for firefighters? >> unfortunately, yes. winds will be picking up. temperature is on the rise, humidity is dropping through the day and staying pretty low at night, too. as we look at the temperatures, a cool start. you certainly want your jacket if you're around napa this morning. 40s and low 50s.

we'll have highs approaching the mid 80s this afternoon as you'll see around the bay area. we'll have a closer look at the red flag conditions coming up in a morning. now for another check of your commute. our 6:00 a.m. commute is looking better than our 4:30 commute. i want to take you quickly through some of our traffic maps. i want to show you how much better this map looks. at 4:30 we had an issue on the san mateo bridge. i'm happy to report the earlier crash along northbound 680 has cleared out. all lanes are open. i've seen that traffic recover quite nicely. i was noticing some light slowing in the south bay along northbound 101. i think it might have been a couple people slowing down. you know there's moments when you're driving, what happened why are people slowing down? i think it's one of those. 21 minutes northbound 280 from

oh highway 101 to highway 85. firefighters are still at the scene of a small grass fire at fremont. they put it out before it caused any major damage. it started near the vulallejo ml park. firefighters across the start are in northern california trying to contain several fast moving wildfires burning right now. we'll give you the latest on the mendocino complex fire. new evacuation orders are underway as the flames move further east. right now, the fire is 125,000 acres and 39% contained. as we come back here to the studio, this is a look at all of the fires that are burning in northern california. the other big one is the carr fire. that's in shasta county near

redding. sam brock filed this report overnight from one community just cleared to return. >> reporter: good morning. i'm at the sunset development in redding which was just given the green light yesterday morning for people to come back. the guy who lives in this house is an 85-year-old korean war veteran who could not believe what he saw when he got here. i know it's dark but you can see the front grass area in front of his house is singed. this went all the way along the perimeter of his house, got the trees up there. skipped the home and then burned the fence on the other side. but the structure itself is fine. now, families walk through barricades to go and see what was left of their home, if it was still standing. even so, an entire street here was wiped out. >> we're very thankful and very blessed we came back and it was like this. that was all. this can be repaired. i can live in the house. i'm not injured, my wife's not

injured. friends and neighbors are not injured. we can handle that. >> reporter: at nearby shasta high school, which was turned into a makeshift local assistance center, displaced people came for insurance questions, money, permits, peace of mind. even those who lost their homes tried to keep things in perspective. >> i look at this as a big bummer, not a tragedy in our lives. you know, people lost their lives, people lost their homes. people, you know -- we're alive, we're well. we've got a community that's helping us out. >> reporter: the city did a very smart thing and brought in the city manager of santa rosa to pick his brain. the most important lesson learned, not to repopulate too qui quickly. reporting from redding, sam brock. as firefighters begin to gain some ground, the wind is expected to pick up in burned areas potentially fuelling those flames.

>> let's bring in our meteorologist for kind of some perspective on this and what we can expect on the fire lines today. >> unfortunately, the three things firefighters don't want to see, strong wind, lowering humidity levels. lake county, starting 11:00 this morning until 11:00 saturday, increasing wind. the wind speed is not too strong this morning, but by 7:00 tonight you see the areas of gold and yellow picking up there in the hills. those are wind gusts approaching 25 to 30 miles per hour. the wind shift we're seeing will impact us here. dropping into the north bay and east bay, the air quality management district does have a smoke advisory up for us today. we'll see the highest concentrations in northern napa county and lake county. coming up, we'll let you know about the warmup we're likely to find here for our weekend

forecast about ten minutes away. thank you very much. our social media pages are great way to keep up to speed on the fire weather. this is a graphic that rob just tweeted out showing where you're likely to see more smoke in the air today. you can plan your day around that. it's 6:06. today the man accused of an unprovoked attack on a homeless person is expected in court. this video is disturbing. san francisco police say the 58-year-old samuel yantab kicked the homeless man on a sidewalk. he was arrested when officers spotted him walking on market street. he's facing aggravated assault charges. one man is in custody on theft and drug charges after a bus at a home they say was also an unauthorized daycare center. that home is located on meadow drive in mill valley west of highway 101.

authorities investigating a burglary and grand theft case went to that home with a search warrant. while they were there they say they discovered fentanyl and they say part of that home was being used for unauthorized daycare, but that no children were there at the time of the arrest. two people were arrested in connection with high profile robberies. police say 51-year-old susan mattson broke into a middle school last month. 31-year-old eric lewis was charged with armed robberies. happening today, a federal judge may provide clarity on how to reunite immigrant children still separated from their parents due to the white house zero tolerance policy. in today's federal hearing the aclu will argue the justice department should bear the burden. white house lawyers believe the aclu should take charge because it can easily contact deported

that's what you want to see on a friday morning as you're getting ready for your weekend. this is the last day of the work week. the bay bridge toll plaza is doing your a favor, no metering lights just yet. we have breaking business news. china says it's preparing to retailar retaliate on tariffs. the import taxes would range from 5% to 25%. china says this will happen if the trump administration does, in fact, place more tariffs on chinese imports. let's take a look at the other business headlines this morning as well. it includes a possible expansion for california based video game companies. contessa brewer is live for us this morning, good morning. >> good morning there. we just got the july jobs report. 157,000 jobs added last month, that missed expectations but still it's a strong pace of

hiring. we're watching what happens with apple this morning, since it became the first u.s. company to top a trillion dollars in market value. apple stock has risen 9% since reporting earnings on tuesday. dow futures now have reduced some of their gains of the morning. in fact, dow futures are in the negative. activision blizzard, the video game maker between candy crush is in talks with several cloud computing providers to offer streaming games. the three largest cloud service providers in the u.s. are amazon, microsoft and google. all three are involved with video games themselves. cloud gaming is still in the early stages here. activision's rival has unveiled a demo, not a full product. maybe if that happens i'll join the rest of the world in trying out candy crush. airstream is bringing smart technology to its iconic rvs. owners will be able to use their app to adjust the lights and the

temperature, the awning, monitor the battery, the propane tank levels. and if they're the kind of people who happen to misplace an airstream their app would help them find it again. it gives them access to customer service and roadside assistance. i'm thinking this thing might just replace the spouse. >> honey, where did i leave the airstream? >> they always know. i mean, you can always ask them because they always know the answer. >> that is true. >> if you lose your camper you'd probably lose your phone, too. >> thank you, contessa. families rebuilding from the north bay wildfires may face unforeseen hurdles because of a shortage of construction workers. the mercury news just talked would a website that links contractors with homeowners. they say 20% of the construction workforce left the state over the last ten years. and nearly half of california's construction job postings don't

get filled for at least six weeks. they say the problem is worse in the north bay where there is incredibly high demand. new video shows a massive wall of dust hitting phoenix, arizona, bringing damaging winds and flash flooding and hail north of the city. a storm did that. heavy rains flooded streets, prompted evacuations as well. the dust storm delayed or canceled more than 100 flights. we want to get a look at your traffic picture in case you're trying to drive away from whatever weather you're in. 880 seems to be a problem? >> we've got an issue there. i'll get to that in a bit. i know we're tracking that smoke. >> smoke and it's starting to show up now in some of our east bay cameras. concord, walnut creek, you're probably noticing the smoke dropping in from the north. a change in the wind is bringing an increase in fire danger. right now, it's a cool start. grab your jacket. santa rosa, napa, that doesn't look like august. 40s and 50s to start things off.

san francisco, a foggy start to the morning. that looks more like summer. 54 with misty skies. san jose, clear start, this time yesterday there were a lot of low clouds. a sunnier start to your morning. 63. we'll see numbers climbing through the 70s and mid 80s later this afternoon. now the view around mount diablo. look at the smoke. that's the smoke from the mendocino complex fire. bay area air quality management district has a smoke advisory up where the highest concentration should be in the north bay and east bay. the smoke is dropping in from the north at noon. as the sea breeze picks up we may see the smoke move off to the east today. temperatures are starting to climb. mid 80s around downtown san

jose. tri valley, low 90s. same for concord and up towards vallejo. you see numbers in the 70s, upper 60s around san francisco. north bay, beginning to see temperatures climb closer to 90. just a slight cooldown for the coast. high pressure will turn stronger again by the time we get towards the middle of next week. the change you're seeing in the seven-day forecast, san francisco may get closer to 70. look at the valleys. temperatures rising mid to upper 90s possible towards the beginning of next week. now for another check of your friday morning commute. i know earlier i had mentioned i was going to check on that crash that popped up on my map. it's exactly what i did. unfortunately, it's not looking too good out there. there's a crash along the southbound 880 side. this is at industrial parkway. our speed censors are picking up heavy delays now.

have a great weekend. 6:25 now. a warning for parents this morning. a minnesota family wants you to know the dangers of online gaming after their 8-year-old was convinced to share personal information online. >> this is charlie pearson. he was playing that popular online game fortnite with teammates from out of state. he says late one night the other gamers convinced him to share his mother's personal information. his mother discovered phone calls and texts from north carolina prompting charlie to secretly send photos of her driver's license and other items. >> i just didn't really want to do it. and then they just kept on telling me to. and then i didn't want them to get mad at me so i just did it. >> police are still investigating, working to get transcripts of the chats. they say prosecuting anybody will be difficult. it's not technically a crime to ask someone to send personal information. they need evidence that it's used illegally.

good one, no metering loiights the bay bridge toll plaza. today family and friends will say good bye to nia wilson, the young woman whose tragic murder made national news. we're outside the local church where people will gather this morning. >> reporter: yes, it's at 11:00 this morning. the family of nia wilson will hold a private funeral here at the acts full gospel here in east oakland. yesterday there was also a private viewing at a funeral home where a number of people showed up to pay their last respects to this 18-year-old girl who was stabbed to death last night while boarding a train with her sisters. police did arrest the suspect the next day. since last thursday, there's been a group of men who go by #wecare. that's the name of their group. they have stationed themselves outside various b.a.r.t. stations in response to the murder.

they're offering to walk riders to their cars. these volunteers are trying to send a message to anyone who might want to harm someone else in their community. >> we're not law enforcement. we're a security blanket and somewhat of a deterrent. >> it take as community to heal a community. >> she was a beautiful young lady in life and she's beautiful right now. and it's just so sad what happened. >> reporter: as we reported yesterday, the family of nia wilson intends to sue b.a.r.t., alleging her murder was quote, foreseeable and preventible. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to the latest on the wildfires. the battle continues across northern california this morning. new evacuation orders are in effect for the mendocino complex fire as fires move east towards clear lake. as things stand right now, 125,000 acres are burned. the fire is 39% contained.

more than a dozen homes are destroyed. that number could grow today as winds pick up in those fire zones. to the carr fire burning in shasta county, nearly 1,000 homes are gone. menlo park firefighters are sending a drone to the area to take a closer look at the destruction left behind. we're live in menlo park. you've been there all week. you know that there are a lot of homes damage or destroyed? >> reporter: more than 1,000 homes burned in shasta county. crews need as much help as they can get. the fire department's work ing with the alameda county sheriff's department. the team arrived in redding on

tuesday. they'll be working with city representatives. they'll be smarexperimenting wi new mapping software. the fire chief says this is, quote, breaking new ground with the mission. the drones will help document the damage in the areas destroyed by creating high resolution interactive maps. he says those will be helpful for homeowners to not only locate their property, but will also help them send the information to their insurance companies. the fire captain says that's important because it could speed up the rebuilding process by allowing the county and city to prioritize when and where to begin reconstruction. the fire department and the sheriff's department have worked on joint projects like this over the tubbs fire. this current project, they hope to take about three days to complete. reporting live, "today in the bay." don't be alarmed if you see a lot of police activity near piner high school today.

santa rosa police are conducting their final active shooter training drill. there will be all kinds of emergency responders there in the area of fulton road this morning through 5:00 tonight. the high school is off limits, but the exercise is not expected to impact traffic in the area. also at 6:36, new developments in a murder investigation in concord. police released images tied to the crime. they say this man, terence boyd dixon, whose picture you're looking at killed a 64-year-old michael downey a week ago. police don't know why the killing happened. the victim's car was also stolen and they believe the suspect is driving it. this is a picture of the car they're looking for. it's a 2013 hyundai velocitor. it's a california plate. dixon is considered armed and dangerous. you are urged to contact police immediately if you see him.

happening tomorrow, the first of two days of b.a.r.t. closures. crews will be working on the tracks between the 19th and lake merrit stations. buses are going to connect passengers from west oakland to each station. there will be two special event trains as well from san francisco that will serve as fans headed to the colosseum. this is the first of several weekends of similar closures between now and the end of september. it's 6:37. the east bay remains a hot spot. if 880 is your commute, listen up. the rest of the bay area is doing okay. we have light slowing. i do want to get to the major slowing along 880. there was a crash earlier, you can see that has caused delays. it's definitely reflecting on

grew up in oakland hopes a big reward will bring molly tibbits home. blake mccoy is in iowa with their new plea. >> reporter: it's been more than two weeks since molly tibbits disappeared in brooklyn, iowa. her family has issued a desperate plea. they have a big new reward to incentivize people. $172,000 so far. they say donations are pouring in from coast to coast. this family hopes that someone knows something and will come forward. >> i've been telling all of you, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. so come forward. share that information with the authorities. and let's bring molly home. >> reporter: coming up this morning on the today show, we'll hear more from molly's parents, including her mother who broke

her silence this weeki. law enforcement is suspected to hold a press conference later this morning in iowa. also knew this morning, a disturbing story out of arizona. that's where a worker at a youth migrant shelter in mesa is accused of molesting at least eight unaccompanied immigrant boys. according to documents that worker molested those eight boys during a one year period ending last june. are all between 15 and 17. the suspect is apparently hiv positive as well. he managed to work there for four months without ever having a background check. new this morning, the world is getting its first look at an upcoming book separating fact from fiction. the book, small fry is a memoir written by steve jobs' daughter. if you saw the movie steve jobs, you remember the two had a complicated relationship. new excerpts seem to support

whirls. this video shows you a smaller version of a whirl crossing the road. what's significant is that back on july 26th, a fire whirl ripped through the communities. yesterday it was confirmed the damage we saw, the uprooted trees and other debris that was thrown around was more in common with tornado-like behavior. in fact, an ef-3. you'll be able to see the toppled trees we had that came down that was associated with that fire whirl. there you go right there in the communities there. it looks like a tornado went through. all of this is wildfire driven. transmission tires toppled over like that. wind speeds of 143 miles per hour documented with that particular fire whirl. this new reality of massive wildfires behaving more like severe thunderstorms and tornado-like winds are possible. amazing research done by the folks at san jose state's fire

sea breeze picks up. we hoped this area of high pressure would park over the pacific northwest. instead it's staying too far to the west. high pressure will build back towards california now. that's the reason why temperatures in the seven-day forecast come tuesday and wednesday are going to get a lot hotter inland. not much change in san francisco. the weekend may be a little bit cool by sunday. look at these temperatures inland. by next week, unfortunately, no break from fire danger. temperatures are going to be much hotter by wednesday. enjoy the weekend weather. coolest temperature likely arriving on sunday. now for another check of your friday commute. we're seeing slowing in the south bay. but i do want to get to the one that seems to be causing the heaviest delays. this is from an earlier crash along southbound 880 at industrial parkway. you can see the heavy delays through there. take some surface streets, jump on after industrial parkway. this backup is all the way

more than 125,000 acres. 39% contained. there are new concerns in shasta county this morning, the carr fire, that's the big one. high temperatures, windy weather could fuel the flames against today. so far, the fire has impacted 180 square miles and destroyed nearly 1,000 homes. 37% contained. a live look at the menlo park fire district where firefighters will provide a boost from the skies in surveying the massive carr wildfire. the department is providing a drone fleet to help survey damage left behind in shasta county. the carr fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes there. the department's drones have thermal imaging cameras. 6:56. new this morning, china says it's ready to slap tariffs on $60 billion on u.s. goods. we also got the july jobs report

an hour ago. payrolls rose 157,000. mixed messages from the white house. the president's national security team gathered together to say they are convinced russia is targeting november's election ahead. but the president himself still calls it a hoax. he did it again at a rally last night. the president's lawyer, rudy guiliani says they'll decide whether to do an interview with the special counsel. you can hear from the president and his advisors in just a few minutes on the today show. in ten years, men may be able to go on the pill, so to speak. at least that's the hope of researchers who today began a global study on a male contraceptive pill and gel. a company introduced the drugs, scientists say both products show a lot of promise and may be available in the year 2028.
