bound for a nearby airport in southern california when it crashed. ntsb now leading the investigation hoping to find out what brought the plane down. this is the moment the small plane fell from the sky, dash-cam capturing the cessna crashing into the ground. >> one twin engine plane down in the parking lot. >> the pilot making a mayday call before impact, all five on board killed as witnesses watched in horror. overnight the coroner's office releasing the identities of all five victims, a group of colleagues from pacific union international, a california-based real estate company. the ceo writing in part, we are shocked and deeply saddened by news of this tragedy. our entire pacific union family is mourning the loss of our colleagues, family and friends. >> i did look up, saw the plane, realized at that point it was really, really low. i'm thinking to myself, that's probably going to crash.

>> crashing interest a busy strip mall parking lot during the middle of lunch hour, the aircraft was shredded into the pieces, nose diving into a parked car. incredibly nobody was injured on the ground. >> this is a sunday afternoon and we have people shopping. the fact there's no injuries on the ground is a miracle in itself. >> the staples parking lot in santa ana where a stunned crowd gathered around the wreckage is just a mile and a half from the destination, john wayne airport in orange county. it's still unclear why the aircraft went down, but ntsb officials are investigating. the cessna, similar to this one, departed from northern california and was roughly two hours into flight when something went wrong. >> we did not see any other damage to any of the commercial buildings or in that strip mall. >> witnesses say there was no explosion. no smoke, no flames, just a massive impact. >> it's heartbreaking,

out at the media and robert mueller describing mueller's investigation as lies and corruption but also completely contradicting his initial version of events about why his son donald trump jr. held that meeting with russians right in the heat of the 2016 campaign. from president trump a striking acknowledgement after a year of denials and shifting stories addressing that 2016 trump tower meeting between his son donald trump, jr. and a russian lawyer. president trump tweeting this was an attempt to get information on an opponent and it's done all the time in politics and it went nowhere. that defense from last summer said it was primarily about the adoption of children led by his son. the administration's story about that 2016 meeting has evolved over the last year. >> i guess they talked about -- as i see it, they talked about adoption and things. >> there was nothing as far as

weeks in the fall, paracuting into hotly contested primaries to turn out his base in political contests. his challenge staying on message and not delivering a win for democrats this fall. >> peter, this is all about the mueller investigation. where does that investigation stand now? >> reporter: hoda, that is the million dollar question. we know from rudy giuliani he received a letter from special council robert mueller's team about a possible interview. the letter didn't rule out the focus would still be on conclusion and obstruction of justice. giuliani also notably floated a date that they would announce whether or not they would be volunteering to do an interview with mueller saying that would happen within the next week. why the new urgency? that's not clear at this time right now. the president's other lawyer saying that the legal team is prepared to fight any possible subpoena that would try to force the president to testify. he also says he received bad information to help explain why he gave a misleading statement

about what the president knew about that statement that he put out on behalf of his son a year ago. hoda. >> all right. peter alexander in jersey. peter, thank you. also this morning the death toll is rising from a devastating earthquake that rocked an indonesia resort island. crews are now racing hoping to find survivors in the rubble. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is following the story for us. hi, bill, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. it has been a terrifying vacation for thousands of tourists, many americans, some shaken by their second earthquake in a week. this one once again deadly. so far no americans among the victims. there are fears this very unstable region could soon be hit again. on this popular vacation beach, a naval officer records an extraordinary scene. hundreds of desperate tourists crowding to get off an island rocked by an earthquake. boats deployed to evacuate them were filled to capacity.

not long after, a tsunami warning that sent thousands more running for the hills. >> my dad made me climb onto the roof of the house. >> the warning was later withdrawn but enough terror for many tourists. this earthquake was much more powerful than the one exactly a week before that killed 17 people. many buildings damaged in the first quake collapsed in the latest and there have been a dozen strong aftershocks. rescuers are still unable to reach hard hit areas because bridges and roads have been destroyed. authorities now warning the death toll is likely to climb. well, there have been more than 120 aftershocks so far from this quake and there were dozens from last week's but more are expected, because indonesia sits on what's called the ring of fire. more than half the world's

what may have been a drone attack against him could have connections to the united states. speaking alongside his wife at a military parade they are suddenly startled by a loud explosion. maduro later retweeted this video reportedly showing a drone blowing up. it comes from a latin american network. they said the video was real. maduro's video team jumps to protect him covering him with ballistic blankets. when maduro's soldiers hear the explosion they break ranks and run for cover. several firefighters disputed the drone explanation saying it was a gas explosion at a nearby building. in a televised address, maduro said this was an attempt to kill me, i have no doubt. maduro's government has been rocked by violent protests sending the country into further crippling economic crisis.

moments later dash-cam video reported the twin-engine plane nose-diving to the ground. >> wildfires claimed a ninth victim. officials say a utility worker was killed trying to restore service knocked out by the so-called car fire that was going on in redding. gusty winds caused that fire to flair up again. three firefighters were injured battling the fire in the mountains. officials will soon decide if parts of parts of yosemite national park are closed because of heavy smoke could reopen this week. dramatic body cam video shows police officers in atlanta rescuing a passenger from a burning car. officials say a car hit a utility pole this weekend, burst into flames, bystanders pulled two people from the wreck. when officers arrived one was trapped. one used a fire extinguisher, the other managed to haul the man out. all three victims made it to the hospital.

we're so excited to start a new series called try it today. now, this is news to me. we're each attempting a new talent or skill. >> you're skydiving. >> oh, no. hoda, of course, big music fan. tell us about your project. >> i wanted to join a choir, so i met up with this incredible crazy show choir from a new york high school. the story started with the kids, inspirational and evolved into a teacher you'll love. in a word, she is magical.

>> show choir. >> great, is that true? amazing, is that true? what? >> the rhythm of the night is not like any other show choir you'll ever see, and i promise you that. >> it's more than just like a sport where after school you have practice for a couple hours and you go home. >> do it again, do it again, do it again. even though we're tired, we know it has to be perfect. >> so they are with you from 3:30 after school until 10:00 p.m. >> yes, and sometimes they don't want to go home. they want to stay. i'll be like, will you go home? >> choir director lanett hicks changes lives one note at a time. you're finding these kids who they don't want to be on stage dancing and singing because they are tough guys and you're transforming them into a choir.

>> yes. i see a young man in the hallway, i said, have you ever thought about being in a choir? they look at me like what's wrong with this lady. i say, you look like you can sing. can you dance, too? they walk away, this lady is crazy. later on, you see them, they come out for the audition and they audition for the choir. ♪ america america >> for many students the choy h -- choir has become kind of a refuge. >> outside of the choir i moved from shelter to shelter living with people, staying in people's homes. right here, none of that matters. >> i felt like i was lost mostly. it was kind of hard for me to control all my emotions. i got kicked out of school, suspensions, this choir changed me. >> thank you. say welcome. >> you're welcome. >> they call you mom.
