we'll talk about wild fires in a few minutes. first we want to say good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. you are talking about the heat. the air quality. >> yeah. not only that but we have another faster playing role in our air quality today. high pressure. it will keep a lot of this t smoke and also raise our ozone levels across the bay area. here is a live look outside as you get ready to head out the door. let's get a look at temperatures. upper 50s starting out and we'll reach into the upper 70s by early afternoon. here is a look. we'll be up to 85 in san jose. it is 92 in concord and 84 in napa and santa rosa. we'll talk about when it is expected to get a little better. we have a look at the morning commute. any issues as of now?

>> no. it is always great news especially for early risers. we are not seeing any major issues. i have seen slowing. it is a very typical morning commute to 680. you're looking at 24 minutes aside from that. no slowing throughout the bay area. back to you. >> all right. thank you. developing right now a search for a killer. police believe that the recent fire have killed the two sisters and a mother is a homicide. >> and now a memorial is growing. we are outside the home where it happened. it is a big development for it to call it a homicide investigation. >> yeah. a big development insedeed. the fire took place and a big development it is being turned into a homicide investigation. behind me you can see the m memorial that's been set up. you can see all of these things

here remembering these two twins that passed away as a result of this fire. here is what we know at this hour. here is what we can report. the 14-year-old twins were found dead inside of the burning home behind me here. their mother died a short time later at a hospital. their 11-year-old sister did escape. i want to show you guys another video. this is a video that a neighbor shot saying she heard a male voice screaming and yelling inside of a home. at about 2:00 on sunday morning one of the twins sent this text asking if he was awake and telling her she is really scared. here is what some of her friends are saying about that text message. >> i want to know why he was scared, like if it was the flames or someone was in the house.

within a half percent point. scott will analyze this and other political stories coming up at 5:45. it is what they call the largest web coast protest ever. it will happen exactly one month from today in san francisco. it is called ride for climate jobs for justice. they will talk about what they call recent impact for climate change including numerous wild fires burning across our state. wild fires are tearing across parts of our state. it may be the worst fire season in history. we still have months to go before it is over. here is the latest on three of the more serious fires. you can see them there on your scene. the fire is nearing 300,000 acres and is the largest in state history. we crunched the numbers

overnight. it is five times the city of oakland. it is the mendocino part of the fire. now new video showing the fire in orange county. because firefighters are stretched elsewhere resources are stretched thin. it is in areas outside the cleveland national forrest. it burned more than 3,000 acres and is about 5% contained. back up here containment is mostly the same for the car wild fire. it is approaching the 50% containment mark. more than a thousand homes are destroyed. 172,000 acres are burned. to give you a perspective it is larger than shan jose and fremot

combined. new this morning prosecutors are praising a young girl for coming forward and facing her attacker in court. the east bay times reports john gomez faces life in prison when he is sentenced next month. a jury convicted him of molesting a girl under the age of ten who slept over at his home. he took that girl to a backyard shed and gave her marijuana and beer. the girl took the stand during his trial. happening today at 5:08 state lawmakers expecting to get involved in the exploding controversy surrounding one school district. a power struggle involving the school district. last month a grand jury agreed board members may have played

favorites in awarding contract deals. they tried to oust the superintendent. they plan to call for an audit to look into interests. in you this morning, it is not too late for older teenagers to get an hpv vaccine. they found between 14 and 20 years old helps protect against cervical cancer. there was no significant protection in women who got their first dose in their early 20s. experts say that more research is needed in ages 24 to 26 years old. you were probably watching as this unfolded live on tv. she was going to use to teach a board the spacecraft. she is a teacher who died when the challenger exploded. they will teach those lessons.

secondly he named the price he offered $420 a share letting people know the price you pay for shares is like walking into an open house and telling the realtor selling the house a million dollars? i would pay price that. the third problem is he did it in a tweet and reassured one it wasn't a joke. that's not how you're supposed to communicate financial information. you're supposed to do it all at once so everybody has a chance to make a financial decision not just people who use twitter or even worse one investor. the latest bay area company to kick alex jones off its service. he said we don't normally discuss individual users but we'll make an exception. we don't allow people to use our platform for hateful contend. the one service that has not ended its relationship is twitter. jones is using twitter's feature to broadcast his show.

in a series of tweets he said we didn't suspend alex jones yesterday. we know that's hard for many but the reason is simple. he hasn't violated our rules. he says accounts can often spread substantiated rumors if journalists do that so people can form their own opinions. he does more than just sort of spread rumor. he attacks the families -- you know, the shooting -- >> sandy hook. >> yes. obviously the shooting was real but the people that don't believe it is real aren't listening to us. >> somebody said it was a hoax even after alex jones a admitted that it was real. >> it is disturbing what some believe and won't believe from what i think are honest

journalists. jack is saying that's how it's got to be. >> for now. >> yeah. >> all right. thank you. more and more americans choosing not to travel to mexico. so airlines may be cutting back as well. the drop in bookings is likely because of violence in some parts of the country including skyrocketing rates. there are also stories of tourists being drugged and robbed. united, delta and american are pointing to quarterly reports in a decrease in travel to mexico. it is what come call the increasingly ugly split between brad pitt and angelina jolie. they claim pitt has not paid

benders. you might encounter construction spots. i spoke too soon. this one just popped up. i will find out what that's about. remember i said the metering lights turn on at about 5:31. metering lights are officially on. i have been checking for your traffic all weekend long. i have a good grip on the timing. i know you're all wondering what your weather will be like for the rest of the week. >> yeah. today will be the air quality. we have wild fires burning across the whole state. the largest one in southern california. we also have the ferguson fire. what's effecting us the most would be the car fire farther to the north and mendocino complex fire. it burned a lot of acreage. still going to see lots of smoke.

it is a spare the air alert day. the drifts of smoke and high levels of ozone will make it unhealthy for young people and the elderly. limit your time outside today. the north bay as well as the bay and the coast and the south bay will have moderate air quality today. it will unfortunately get worse. we also have an extreme fire danger for today in these areas shaded in orange over the mendocino complex. we will watch out for these light northerly winds and hot temperatures in those areas. wind speeds coming in from the north. that's also what caused that smoke to move in. as we go into the evening those winds will shift more west areally and help improve our air quality. very hot for inland areas but not as hot as it has been. the smoke acting as a layer of clouds across the bay area and

keeping our temperatures from getting extremely hot. so as we monitor air quality today looking really bad still hazy and smokey. we talk about how they are coping with all of that smoke. some times you can smell it even though it is so far away, bob. >> reporter: yes. good morn to go yoing to you. the smoke from the wild fires further out east. the air quality district has issue add spare the air day. it is the fifth one this year. because of those high temperatures, the smog and smoke from the wild fires. the district is encouraging you to ditch the cars like the ones buzzing behind me on 580 and

work at home if you can or at least car pool or take mass transit. according to the epa office the smoke from the wild fires do carry a mixture of gases and particles that can spread to your lungs and bloodstream. they are most at risk especially if they have underlying issues. >> how is it effecting you? >> the district has encouraged you not to burn any wood today,

keep your windows closed to avoid bringing in outside air. today in the bay. >> really good information there. it makes you worry about it. >> you can take the day off and not feel guilty about it. some wild fire survivors are outraged because lawmakers are trying to hammer out which would limit the liability for utilities. they fear they may lose the right to recover their losses legally. happening today a group of opponents is holding a rally on the steps of the state capitol to argue tillties be held accountable. they hope to wihile they are in sacramento. a new report published. the department of homeland security says more than 700,000 foreigners who legally entered the u.s. did not go home. >> the new numbers have lawmakers saying that the trump

administration focused on the mexican border may be misplaced. we are live with what the new numbers could mean for shifting immigration policy, good morning. >> yeah. good morning. 52 million people came in legally according to the report. those are mostly students, business travelers there on vacation. they now make up one of the largest groups in the united states. the new report looks between october 2016 through september 2017. it calculates more than 700,000 people overstayed their visa which is actually lower than the previous year. the largest numbers issued were for china, brazil and argentina.

the biggest group are at 4% mostly from african countries. i checked with the aclu. many immigration advocates are using this to attack president trump's immigration policies which have been focused on building the wall. this report shows visa violators may be a bigger problem. the department of homeland security says new numbers will help them improve enforcement policies if you overstay your visa you can stay without any penalty. you could be barred from entering the united states for three years. today in the bay. >> all right. thank you for that. >> thank you. a proposed sales tax

increase will not be on the november ballot. last night they voted down the proposal to increase existing sales tax. city leaders had been coming up with a way to stabilize their budget. >> south bay drivers aimed at making your a little less stressful is moving forward faster than your commute. a 2 1 $.2 million loan. the money will be used to examine the gridlock. money for that study was originally approved by voters in 2016 but the funding is tied up in a lawsuit. >> speaking of the south bay i did check up on that crash. let's get right to it.

digits in 2016. congressional seat has been for decades. the gop spent millions of dollars in the election. president trump made a special trip to ohio to campaign for the republican candidate. all that and if the numbers are right the gop bare lly kept the seat. a 25% tax on $16 billion worth of american goods. we'll talk more about that in the next half hour. vice president pence will speak about america's plan for space force. one of the key questions is if we'll send the u.s. military to space is america doesn't have the technology to do that. we get a ride every time with the russians. we will keep track of the ohio election as well as the tariffs that we'll talk about again in about a half an hour.

morning with food on the mind. here is a live look outside in san jose this morning. it is a spare the air alert day. this is the first time we have had it in quite a while. we know we have seen the drifts of smoke. not only do we have the smoke but today we have the high levels of ozone. what's happening here is because we have the stagnant air and high pressure pushing that poor air quality down in the valley. it is not mixing up that well. now even the bay and the coast have air quality. as you make your way out the door hopefully you can call somebody up and car pool with someone. it can help reduce ozone levels. we'll start out with upper 50s and reaching into the mid-80s. also if you can catch public transit on your way out it will be in the mid-50s. a cool start to the morning.

we will go from cool temperatures this morning and heating up by early afternoon. a look at all of that and the high temperatures for today. mostly mid-80s for north bay. oakland 70 degrees and 75 in san jose. 93 will be the high today in antioch. as you're about to make your way out it will be another day. it is trying to stay comfortable and cool. i want to show you what's happening here. look at this hurricane. a major hurricane. it is a category 3. wind speeds at 125 miles per hour kicking up high waves for hawaii right now. it is a good thing it is not getting a direct hit. as we get a look it will be smokey and hazy and hot and high temperatures in some of our inland valleys reaching into the mid-90s. we'll stay the same over the

next couple of days. we are hoping for improvement as far as more breezy winds that will help clear things up. in san francisco mostly 60s through the forecast. you were telling me 680 is starting to back up. >> we are starting with some slowing. we do have an issue in the south bay. i'll get to that in a second. i want to take you to the accident that is just reported along 680. there is a left hand shoulder that is blocked. i am starting to notice that on the speed sensors as well. so if you can try take extra time out this morning. it has been reported. hopefully they will get it out in time for your morning commute. let's get down to the south bay. that crash is at 101. a lane remains blocked. i can tell it is still blocked. our speed sensors are starting to change colors. it is starting to become bumper
