term. we'll check with the expert in a moment. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to traffic in a moment. kari, looking at the forecast, today will be the hottest day of the week? >> hottest day of the week and maybe the smokiest as well. unfortunately. here's a live look outside in san jose this morning. let's head to east san jose to evergreen and see how the temperatures shape up for today. as you can see, it's going to be hot. quickly making it into the low 90s early this afternoon. here's a look at all of our microclimates. we're going to see the high in livermore up to 90 degrees. napa, 88 degrees. 65 today in san francisco. we'll take a look at the weekend, and vianey is tracking a lot of issues in the south bay and east bay. >> they're kind of scattered right now. chp is reporting what looks to be a small grass fire. this is along 880. just off the right-hand shoulder. southbound at winton avenue. you might be catching some slowing there simply because

they're trying to put of that grass fire on the side of the road there. we also have another minor issue, this along southbound 680 and that doesn't look to be causing any major delays. it cleared out before the time of it building up. san jose in the south bay, we had a minor issue along highway 17 that you can see along 101, no issue there. >> back to you. >> thank you, 5:01. happening today, more than a year after the deadly ghostship fire took the lives of all the young people, a possible conclusion to the tragedy. the two men charged in the fire are scheduled to be sentenced today by an alameda county judge. today in the bay's pete suratos is live at the courthouse with what we can expect. this is likely an emotional day for all of the victims' family and friends who spoke out. >> you just mentioned, hard to believe it's been more than a year and a half since that deadly ghostship warehouse fire.

i remember being there and seeing the emotion on the families' face, learning they lost a loved one in the warehouse fire. it was back in july when you had the two men who reached plea deals to avoid a lengthy trial. the two men -- max harris who served the creator of the warehouse. they pled no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for their roles in the ghostship warehouse fire that took the lives of 36 people, guys. they all ranged in ages between 17 to 61. now, when it comes to the plea deals, almena could serve 12 years which includes nine years behind bars and three years of supervised release and he could be released in 3 1/2 years because of time already served. harris would serve ten years with six of those years in jail, four years on supervised release. he could be released in 23

months because of time already served as well. now, when it comes to the next two days of sentencing, it will include family members of the victims speaking out about the pain they endures in the past year and a half. quite a number of families so that's why the sentencing will span two days. it begins at 9:30 a.m. we're live in oakland, pete suratos for today in the bay. >> 5:03 right now. developing for you, red flag conditions continue to cause problems for firefighters across the state. battling more than a dozen wildfires. here's the latest. as of last night, the mendocino complex fire burned 302,000 acres. it's now bigger than the city of los angeles. that fire is 47% contained and the number of homes destroyed there now stands at 119. >> in southern california, conditions worsened yesterday for firefighters battling the holy fire. the u.s. forest service says that fire destroyed at least 12 structures, burned about 4100

acres and it is only 5% contained. and the shasta county fire or the shasta county carr fire there, wildfire remains just under 50% contained. there are no new reports of homes being destroyed but it already numbers more than 1,000. the fire has burned 176,000 acres. >> now this morning, a new problem for evacuees from the mendocino complex fires. norovirus spreading at the lower lake high school shelter. officials are working to stop the outbreak, but people who are sick have been separated from others staying there already and a cleaning company is coming in to help disinfect the shelter but they don't have anywhere else to go. >> happening now, the air quality in the bay area's really getting worse with all of these fires. this is a photo posted by the alameda county sheriff's office showing the smoke along the altamont pass. send us what your skies look like where you are, or part of

your town on twitter, facebook, and instagram. we're @nbcbayarea across all of our platforms. we want to turn to kari hall for a closer look at what the air quality is because you have been talking about it, and it's not good for us. >> still not good. especially for people who exercise outside, who work out there, and you want to make sure you're taking it easy, wearing a mask if you can. try to limit your time outside. another spare the air alert day. we can also help cut down on ozone levels if we catch public transit or if you're able to carpool. it's going to be most unhealthy in the east bay as well as santa clara valley. we have seen these conditions and it's even affecting the coast as we have seen some moderate air quality today. another red flag air quality issue has been issued. you talked about the carr fire. we'll have low humidity and winds picking up through this afternoon into saturday. that's when you'll have the watch the possibility of these wildfires spreading or possibly new ones developing farther to

the north. we'll keep an eye on that. >> thank you. an aftershock rocked indonesia after the 7.0 quake we reported on sunday. the death tolls from sunday's quake keep rising and now the official government report says 220 people have been killed. local media reports, though, say it's more than 300. the massive quake struck a southern indonesian island more than 150,000 people are now homeless because of that quake. well, developing right now in nashville, tennessee. calls this morning for a police chief there to step down. this is after the release of surveillance video showing a deadly police shooting. we want to warn you that that video you're about to see is graphic. now, that shooting happened two weeks ago. a security camera caught it. that video, you can see there, shows that white police officer shooting a black man in the back as he's chased down the

sidewalk. police stopped the video just before the gun strike, and that killed the 25-year-old. following the release of that video, the mayor called for a comprehensive review of the police chief. >> the goal was to make sure we were transparent with the community about the circumstances. >> no charges have been filed at this time. the police union claims that shooting was justified and that hambrick was holding a handgun. the officer who killed him is on paid administrative leave. >> the investigation into a deadly house fire continues in vallejo this morning. as we reported yesterday, police are calling this a homicide. a mother and her two daughters are now dead. and last night, dozens of friends, family, and community members gathered for a candlelight memorial. the big question among these people is where is the girl's father? we asked that very question. >> do you know, has anyone heard from the dad? >> no, no one has.

>> police are not releasing the father's whereabouts but family friends say he left for vietnam a few days ago. another daughter who was injured in the fire is recovering. >> salono county is developing new technology to help better find 911 callers. it works best with apple devices because apple starting this fall will provide location data. it's using technology that will capture that data. today, county 911 officials will discuss how that technology works. well, one month from now, san francisco may as well be the center of the universe in a debate over global climate change. huge summit is planned for the masono center. now organized in part by governor brown and involving experts from all over the world. happening later today, some of the organizers will lay out specific plans for the global climate action summit, which begins september 12th. well, the new season

there. your transit forecast will be nice and cool this morning but expect it to be turning fairly hot quickly as you go into the afternoon. vianey has your look at a drive this morning as you head out the door to work. >> it's starting to slow down in the south bay now. we have two issues. we had that initial one. this was along highway 17. i want to -- as i was walking over, i noticed a bit of a road hazard pop up. what that usually means is there might be some sort of debris on the roads. as of right now, your drive times on northbound 101, we're looking at 19 minutes. northbound 280 from highway 10 someone, eight minutes, and northbound 85, you're looking alt 17 minutes. i'm not catching major slowing, but again, another traffic hazard popped up. i'll keep a close eye on that. >> thank you. coming up next on today in the bay, solving california's wildfire problem with technology. the new innovation being unveiled in san jose today.

radio show. other news, the "wall street journal" says the san francisco office of the s.e.c. is interested in talking to elon musk about the claim he has the funding to take tesla private. it's not an investigation, but the securities and exchange commission apparently would like evidence musk really does have the money to set that up. musk had tweeted tuesday, funding secured. if you're a ceo and say something about your company's financials, it needs to be perfectly accurate. i want you to take a look at this. this is the most expensive condo ever sold in san francisco as measured by square foot. i think that kitchen is incredibly quaint for $15 million. >> $15 million? >> that's near the bay bridge. the san francisco business times says that's not even the most expensive apartment in the building. there's a $42 million penthouse still available. that building is basically half facebook, and then the other half is residential. it would be not hard to believe there's probably somebody from

68 to 95. and you know it's going to be really uncomfortable day, but look at how cool it will be in half moon bay. we have a wide range in temperatures all across the bay area. beaches stay cool, only 61 degrees. let's head to the south bay. check out our microclimate. los gatos reaching 90 degrees today. east san jose, 89 degrees there. and walnut creek, 94. we'll be up to 72 in oakland while redwood city is at 80 degrees. and san francisco reaching 63 in the marina district. mission district at 68. and for the north bay, we have 88 today expected in napa. novato up to 92 degrees. let's check out the tropics, as we look at what's now tropical storm john over the next few days, this will continue to weaken, and this will have an impact on bay area weather. we're going to see as that weakens some of the moisture surging into some of our coastal areas, making it into the bay area. blues and greens show partly elevated humidity, which is

going to help us out next week cool off our temperatures. if you're following me on facebook and twitter, you may get a personalized forecast if you let me know what's going on this weekend. the full weekend forecast is coming up in 20 minutes. if you can hang out. our temperatures will be in the low 90s this weekend. a little more of a breeze, and then san francisco keeps it consistent with some 60s throughout the forecast. vianey, you were telling me something is happening in concord. >> a sig alert in concord. i want to get to it to make sure i get you covered. there's a crash on northbound 242 at clayton road that originally had several lanes blocked, almost all lanes blocked, but the latest from chp is it looks like now one lane is open and lanes two and three remain blocked. you can see the speed sensors are picking up the heavy delays right through that area. as of right now, it looks like since they opened the one lane, they haven't given us an official time for that. i'll keep a close eye on this, but remember, only lanes two and

good morning and thank you good thursday morning to you. friday eve, as you take a live look at san francisco. there's a light shining and so are we. thank you for starting your morning with us on today in the bay. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. enjoying time with the family as summer starts to wind up. it doesn't feel like summer is winding up. it's still hot. >> going to be hotter today than recently for the inland areas and we'll still have drifts of smoke. it definitely feels like summer out there, but you want to limit your time outside because it will be unhealthy to spend long periods of time out there as we

will have not only drifts of smoke but high ozone levels. it will be unhealthy for the inland east bay as well as santa clara valley. moderate for the south bay and the coast. let's get a look at fremont, at 60 degrees as you get started and as the day goes along, at 80 degrees for early afternoon. not bad there, but some spots will be hot. we'll talk about what's going on into the weekend. that's in about seven minutes. vianey has a look at the morning commute and mostly the east bay seeing problems. >> the east bay and now through concord. we have a couple issues still in the south bay. before i get to that, i still want to get to the sig alert. this one is in the concord area along northbound 242. clayton road, only one lane remains open. lanes two and three are still blocked. and our speed sensors are catching that slowing. i'm also noticing this crash that popped up along highway 4. let's get to some of the south bay drive times because we have an issue along 87, and another along highway 17.

northbound 101 from highway 85, not seeing slowdowns, 22 minutes. and northbound 85 from highway 101, only 18 minutes. i'll have another update and the rest of the bay area is doing coming up. 5:31 right now. keeping you safe on b.a.r.t. today, transit leaders are expected to address safety concerns. this is after three people were killed in a five-day period. today in the bay's bob redell is live at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station with what's up for discussion. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, marcus. what b.a.r.t. is considering is increasing the number of days its police officers work. from five to six days a week. now, pab.a.r.t. riders we spoke with like this plan, especially after the recent murder of 18-year-old nia wilson, stabbed to death at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station, but a report indicates the officers themselves are worried about being overworked. the proposed six day work week would be unsustainable. b.a.r.t. says the longer work

week would be temporary. we did reach out to the bay area council, a local public policy organization. that council believes that more does need to be done to help make b.a.r.t. safer. that the transit agency should consider help from other local law enforcement agencies. >> we're simply asking b.a.r.t. and b.a.r.t. police and local communities and police chiefs, sheriffs, to come together, have a conversation about what might be possible. >> nbc bay area has not yet heard back from the union representing b.a.r.t. police officers. the b.a.r.t. board will discuss the new safety and security action plan at its meeting later this morning. separately and unrelated, the board is also expected to discuss whether or not to end its teenage student discount program. reporting live here in fremont outside the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, bob redell, today in the bay. >> i know a lot of people who take b.a.r.t. and they say they feel safer when they see the officers walking around. stunning new developments in the beating of an elderly man. one of the suspects is the son

of the union city police chief. police say 18-year-old tyrone mcalister brutally attacked a 71-year-old sikh man on monday while he was taking his morning walk. the other suspect in the case is 16 years old. his name is not released because he's a mainer. this morning, the victim's family says they believe this attack was a hate crime. >> he grabbed the money, but he don't have money. that is hate crime. >> a union city chief released an open letter to the public saying in part, words can barely describe how embarrassed, dejected, and hurt my wife and daughters and i feel right now. violence and hatred is not what we have taught our children. intolerance for others is not even in our vocabulary. >> more than two years after the first made national headlines, brock turner's case is back in the spotlight. a three-judge panel in san jose denied the former stanford

swimmer's appeal yesterday. turner's attorney agreed there wasn't enough evidence to support his sexual assault conviction. the attorney said turner only engaged in what he describes as, quote, sexual outercourse, and tat did not involve the intent to commit rape. in june, voters recalled the judge who sentenced turner to only six months in jail after his conviction for assaulting the unconscious woman on stanford's campus. >> a developing story you need to hear about. new details in a disturbing story out of new mexico. 11 children found living in filth in a compound were being taught how to kill. five adults were arrested at that compound outside of santa fe where 11 children ranging in age from 1 to 15 were found emaciated and living in deplorable conditions. we're learning from court documents that the children were being trained to commit school shootings. a gun range and a stockpile of loaded firearms were also found

on the compound. but the father of one particular suspect believes they just wanted to protect themselves. >> all they wanted to do is get out of society, get away. and live a peaceful life by themselves. >> here's another layer to the story. human remains on the compound are being identified to see if they belong to the son of one of those suspects who was a severely disabled boy who disappeared in december. >> 5:36, and right now, firefighters in west marin county are keeping an eye on an area that went up in flames late yesterday. crews responded quickly on the ground and from the air. the fire dubbed the bridge fire started along point reyes petaluma road. it was contained on the steep side of a hillside, but people who live in that area there were ready to get out. >> we have a trailer on standby and a driver. so hopefully there will be no

traffic and that's another issue when an emergency like this happens, is you hope there's not traffic and you can get through. >> that fire has burned about 45 acres. the cause is under investigation. happening today, state lawmakers resume a hearing on improving wildfire preparedness and response. this is the second half of a two-day session. part of the hearing involves rethinking liabilities for utilities when it comes to potential wildfire damages. they're also trying it figure out how to create a safe and reliable power grid. the governor hopes that the committee can craft new legislation before the end of the month. >> a new plan to add bike lanes in one san jose neighborhood is not getting a warm reception. neighbors are furious to find out that they're losing their street parking spots. those new lanes are going up along samaritan avenue just east of good samaritan hospital. they say 54 street parking spots are being eliminated. the change is part of a broader plan to make streets more bike

accessible. still, some homeowners say they'll now have to park down the street when the changes are made in october. >> i like parking in front of my own place. i want to be able to see my car, i want to hear it. >> projects like this have to create a safe space to ride a bike and make it a real option for more people. >> the city has a long-term goal here of getting people to bike or walk 15% of the time by 2040. >> if you live in contra costa county and have some dreaded government business to get done, tonight is actually a fun chance to do it. there's a block party in walnut creek, and a lot of government agencies will be out there providing services like i.d. kits for kids, employment opportunities, they can even help you sign up for medi-cal. and services for animals will be available, too. i'm interested in the library card opportunity. >> ooh, library card. i like that. i use the library all the time. maybe you and i need to revisit

downtown. it will be still warm during the middle of the afternoon as you're getting out there, getting set up. as the evening goes along, it's going to feel very nice. 7:00, at 79 degrees. then going to see the temperatures dropping back into the low 70s. on saturday, we'll still have temperatures spread out all over the place, from the coast in the upper 60s to the bay at 81 degrees. and some low 90s for the inland valleys. on sunday, low 90s for the valley. still, and it looks like there will be improved air quality all across the bay area, so that's good news for the coast. at 66 degrees so cool. are you going to outside lands on saturday? golden gate park is going to be packed, and make sure you're wearing something to keep your warm because you may not realize it, but it's going to stay in the 60s throughout the day. it's going to be cool, even with that sunshine. if you're hitting the road heading to squaw valley, it's going to be nice. going out for hiking and also enjoying time outdoors, it will be in the low 80s.

the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza officially on because the metering lights are on and we're starting to see delays from the maze to the bay bridge. about a 15-minute drive. i'll have an update on the rest of the bay area coming up. >> all right. 5:45 now. and new this morning, the andrade on-ramp at northbound 680 is open again for your commute this morning after a crash involving a tanker truck last night. the chp says the truck took that ramp too fast and crashed, and the driver was injured. because the truck spilled oil, cleanup went into the early morning hours and in fact crews only finished cleaning up that scene at 4:00 this morning. >> so okay, when you head to the beach in santa cruz, if you're cutting through los gatos as your main route and you behave badly, the city is going to come after you. the town's mayor wants to increase officer overtime hours so they can do more patrols. this is not going to happen this

summer but for next summer. the mayor says drivers are doing tings like blowing through stop signs. even driving the wrong way. not clear if all the violators, though, are out of towners headed to the beach or maybe locals being naughty too. >> should stanford university build more housing on campus? the topic santa clara county is discussing. that discussion continues today. there's a public hearing this afternoon at the county government center in san jose. well, 5:46 for you right now. the president has been silent so far about one of his closest supporters' troubles. >> congressman chris collins is facing serious charges. >> yeah, collins was the first member of congress to endorse then-candidate trump. you're right, very serious trouble. collins, along with his son and his son' future father-in-law, had been charged with insider trader. and lying to the fbi. collins is on the board of directors of a pharmaceutical company. he's accused of tipping off his son about the bad news about the

company, and then his son sold shares before the stock fell. collins, a republican congressman from new york, says he's innocent and he will run for re-election. >> the charges that have been levied against me are meritless. and i will mount a vigorous defense in court to clear my name. >> collins, of course, is innocent before proven guilty, but the indictment shows a pretty solid case. take a look. just minutes after collins finds out his company's new drug has failed testing, he calls his son seven different times. the first six, the son doesn't pick up. one right after the other. on the seventh, he picks up. we don't know what they discussed for six months and eight seconds, but just after collins gets the bad news about the company, and he's on his phone with his son, his son sells the stock. other news we're watching, the united states is set to impose

new sanctions on russia. these come as president trump is trying to improve relations between the u.s. and russia. now, the sanctions are automatic, required by law. little president trump can do to stop them. also a note, yesterday, i said president pence. i misread my calendar. that's happening today. we're following that on twitter. you can follow me. >> 5:48. happening today, san francisco zoo lifts the curtain on two of its newest additions. look at those cuties there. in early june, a mama snow leopard had kittens. the zoo sent us a photo showing them just after they were born along with the images of the proud parent there. now, these cubs are ready for their debut at noon today in their outdoor enclosure. that zoo also says for the time being, the cubs will not be on permanent public display.

station where we have the potential of reducing our carbon emissions and helping the air quality just a bit. we advise you to take public transit. if you're on your way to the dublin b.a.r.t. station, about 60 degrees. a nice and cool start to the morning. whatever you have to do, do it early because it's turning hot today. hotter than yesterday in antioch as well as concord, reaching into the mid 90s there, and upper 80s for the north bay, san francisco keeping it cool. so as you're getting dressed this morning, of course, it depends on where you are, but if you're trying to stay cool with short sleeves and shorts today, and then if you're going tonight to the 49ers game, it's warm out there at levi's stadium, and then dropping down into the low 70s. and staying cool in san francisco. the pirates coming into town and playing the giants. first pitch at 7:15. only about 59 degrees. bundle up out there. we're going to be hot for the valley today. the hottest temperatures today and still smoky, but we may have some improvements this weekend

as the winds pick up and the seven-day forecast for san francisco staying in the 60s throughout the weekend. vianey has been tracking several issues on the roads this morning. you're saying something is still going on for the east bay. >> in fact, yeah, we have major slowing along 880, and this is due to recovery from an earlier crash. you can see those delays past whipple road at this point, and the crash that's working to recover was at decotto road, and there was a car fire there. crews are there, but they're still cleaning up the mess which is causing some of the delays along 880. also seeing a hazard on winton avenue. minor slowing, and in the south bay, a couple issues. one along highway 17 at hamilton and a uppal issues as well as we get down to 101. as far as the bay bridge, the metering lights are on and the slowing using the bridge drive times. westbound 880 to the bay bridge, 14 minutes. back to you. >> thanks. 5:51 for you right now.
