scott mcgrew listening through this brand-new interview as today in the bay continues right now. and good morning, and thank you so much for joining us on this thursday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia who is off this week, and we want to get a look at the forecast. my husband was up in the mendocino complex fire area. he's also a journalist. there were a ton of helicopters grounded because of the visibility problem. >> visibility has been so bad, and then today, they're going to have some extreme heat. so we're seeing these conditions across the bay area that has made the air quality even worse. we have high pressure that's pushing all this down close to the surface, making it hard to see as we get a look at palo alto. visibility there not too bad. we're going to see the temperatures heading into the low 80s for this afternoon. let's go to martinez and see our temperatures for today. going to heat up fast, going from the low 70s to the upper 80s for 4:00 today.

here's a look at all of our microclimates. 96 in antioch. as hot as 102 in ukiah, and san francisco, 65 degrees. san jose up to 87. we'll get a look at all our microclimates and talk about air quality. that's coming up in a few minutes. vianey has been looking at the roads this morning. you have been seeing issues in parts of the east bay. >> keeping a close eye on the east bay, the south bay, but i have an update for you out of concord. an earlier sig alert had been issued along northbound 242 at clayton road. chp reporting all lanes are now open and that traffic collision has been cleared out. you can see the speed sensors now showing the traffic moving along quite nicely. now, i do have two minor crashes to tell you about, right before getting on the bay bridge on the eastbound side, so if you're driving from san francisco to oakland at harrison street, we have a crash there. looks like it might be blocking one of the lanes and a crash on the westbound side. this is at 80, right before the toll plaza. one lane is blocked. this delay also has something to do with the fact that the metering lights are on. something to keep in mind.

i'll have an update on the rest of the bay area coming up. >> thanks, vianey. >> 6:01 right now. today, the final chapter begins in a deadly fire we have been following for nearly two years. 36 people died when the ghostship warehouse went up in flames and pete suratos has been following the story from the start. he's in oakland. what can we expect from the courthouse? >> good morning to you, marcus. this is going to be the first of two days of sentencing. the sentencing hearing for the ghostship warehouse fire. when it comes to the two men charged, they reached blee deals so that avoided a lengthy trial. over the next two days we'll hear more about the sentencing and the families get a chance to express how they felt over the past year and a half since the deadly fire took place. the two men that we're talking about that were charged were derrick almena, the master 10 nlt of the ghostship warehouse, and max harris who served as the creative director when all of this took place. and they did plead no contest during the preliminary hearings

on july 3rd, to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, for their role in the deadly ghostship warehouse fire that took the lives of 36 people, ranging in ages of 17 to 61. now, let's talk about the plea deals. almena can serve 12 years, which includes nine years in jail and three years of supervised release. but he could be released in 3 1/2 years because of time already served. when it comes to harris, he would serve ten years with six years in custody, four years on supervised release. he could be released in 23 months because of the time already served as well. the next two days of sentencing will include family members speaking out about the pain they endured in the past year and a half. the hearing is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. we're live in oakland. pete suratos. >> one we'll certainly be following. thong for the update. >> now, once the judge announces the sentences in this case, of course, we'll push those out to

your smart phone. this is a great time to download the app. we'll also immediately update our website, twitter feed, as well as facebook. >> developing right now, red flag conditions continue to cause problems for firefighters all up and down the state where they are battling more than a dozen wildfires. the three big ones on your screen. here's the latest, as of last night, the mendocino complex fire burned 302,000 acres and is now bigger than los angeles. the fire is 47% contained. the number of homes destroyed is now 119. >> in southern california, conditions worsened yesterday for firefighters battling the holy fire. looks like nighttime. u.s. forest center said the fire destroyed at least 12 structures and burned about 4100 acres. that fire is still only 5% contained. >> back up north to shasta county, the carr wildfire remains under 50% contained and there are no new reports of homes destroyed but already there are more than 1,000 homes

that are gone. the fire burned more than 176,000 acres and counting. >> and happening now, the air quality in the bay area is really getting worse with all of these fires. and this is the photo posted by the alameda county sheriff's office showing the smoke along the altamont pass. now, send us what your skies look like from where you are. you can tag us on twitter, facebook, as well as instagram. we are @nbcbayarea across all of our platforms. we want to turn to meteorologist kari hall. you have been closely following all of these conditions for us. what can we expect from this today? >> it's still going to be smoky today. we have unhealthy air quality for the bay yare u especially the inland parts of the east bay and spots like dublin as well as santa clara valley. when it is unhealthy out there, you do want to make sure you're wearing a mask, if you have breathing problems, limit your time outside. turn your air conditioning on, recirculate, and if you can, you can reduce the amount of carbon

emissions and ozone levels by carpooling or catching public transit. we still have very unbearable, unbelievable, i should say, wildfire conditions. we have a red flag warning in effect near the carr fire area. that means that we'll have low humidity, high wind gusts and the winds pick up today and continue through saturday. we could see those wildfires spreading, going in different directions. or we could see new ones developing. i'll continue to watch those conditions and our hot temperatures in those areas. more on this in an update coming up. >> thank you, kari. >> 6:06 now. a magnitude 5.9 aftershock rocked indonesia once again, and this follows that 7.0 quake that struck sunday. the death toll from sunday's quake keeps rising, and at this point, the official government report is that 220 people were killed, but local media say it's more like 300 people. the massive quake struck a southern indonesian island and

more than 150,000 people are now homeless because of that quake. well, developing right now in nashville, tennessee, calls this morning for the police chief there to step down. this is after the release of surveillance video showing a deadly police shooting. we want to warn you that this video you're about to see could be considered graphic. that shooting happened two weeks ago and it was security camera footage that captured the shooting as it happened. the video seems to clearly show the white police officer shooting a black man in the back as he chased him down the sidewalk. we saw that video just before the gunfire struck and killed 25-year-old daniel hambrick. following the release of the video, the mayor called for a comprehensive review of police procedure. >> the goal was to make sure that we were transparent with the community about the circumstances. >> no charges have been filed. the police union claims that the shooting was justified and that hambrick was holding a handgun. the officer who killed him is on

paid administrative leave. one month from now, san francisco may as well be the center of the universe in the debate over global climate change. a huge summit is planned for the moscone center and organized in part by governor brown and involved experts from all around the world. some of the organizers will lay out the specific plans for the global climate action summit which starts on september 12th. right now it's 6:08. as you get ready to head out the door, we're seeing clouds and smoke over parts of the south bay. let's head to south san jose to santa teresa, at 64 degrees at 8:00. a nice cool start, heating up to the mid 80s. you may feel a little bit warmer today as our temperatures will be heating up, especially for the valleys. and we always advise, once again, when we have high ozone levels and a spare the air alert, catch public transit. it will heat up faster there, up

to 88 at 1:00 today. reaching 95 in concord and 88 in napa. oakland, 72, and 65 today in san francisco. i'll break it down for san jose coming up in a few minutes, and vianey, now you have a sig alert in the east bay. >> the east bay is getting extremely rough, especially if your commute involves 880 southbound and northbound seeing some increased delays. sig alert has been issued along northbound 880 at fremont boulevard. it appears lanes four and five are blocked duz to a crash. if you can, take surface streets and hop on off fremont bufltd. we're also seeing heavy delays along southbound 880 because there was a car fire earlier, and they're working to clear out some of the lanes as well. as of right now, east bay drive times, extreme slowing southbound 880 to highway 84, 33 minutes. >> thanks. still ahead this morning, a new way to dial 911. bay area community making it easier to find you when you need

good thursday morning. right now at 6:13, we're seeing cloudy skies over the south bay. mixing in with smoke as well. we'll still have unhealthy air quality today, and our temperatures will be warming up fast, going from 73 degrees to the low 90s around san jose. so take it easy this afternoon and once again, limit your time outside. we'll talk about when we'll get some slight cooling and maybe some better air quality in less than five minutes. listen um, east bay commuters. a sig alert has been issued along northbound 880 at fremont boulevard. lanes four and five remain blocked. expect heavy delays. i'll have an update on the rest of the bay area coming up. and a very good morning to you. nasdaq is on a seven-day winning streak. hamburgers and fries. all this stuff, you just pick it off the burger. >> that's right. >> and then we're only thinking about breakfast, i don't want to think about something that monstrous. let's start out with something nice and light and talk about our air quality. now, we're going to see some clouds moving by this morning. here's a live look outside in oakland. if you're on your way out the door heading to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, it will be cool and only in the upper 50s starting out, but it's going to be a nice day, staying in the low 70s here. and then as we go to the south bay, let's get a look at our high temperatures here today. and it is going to be slightly hotter today than it was yesterday. morgan hill reaching 96 degrees. cupertino is up to 84 degrees. still not much of a wind in parts of the inland east bay. that's the reason why we'll still have drifts of smoke coming by. concord heading up to 95.

also 95 in pleasanton. fremont, 86 degrees. staying mostly cloudy in half moon bay. 60 degrees there. san mateo, 77. palo alto, 82. san francisco, gusty winds and staying in the 60s throughout the day. mill valley, 85. and 102 today in ukiah. let's head to the tropics. we've got an update on hurricane hector. still a category 3 just south of the big island, hawaii, kicking up big waves and moving rain bands that way. that storm will continue to move out over the open pacific, then i'm tracking tropical storm john. this will fizzle out. it's just to the west of baja, california. this will have an impact on the bay area heading into early next week. as it weakens we'll start to see some of the subtropical moisture moving into the bay area. rain is not expected but the humidity will be higher. where we see the greens and blues right over the bay area monday and tuesday, that means we will have some slightly elevated humidity, which is

great news in our wildfire fight. and higher humidity helps out the fire crews. it's still going to be hot and dry today. drifts of smoke, highs reaching to the mid 90s. cools off once again next week for the early part of the week, and san francisco, not seeing many changes, maybe just a little less fog tomorrow morning. vianey has been tracking that sig alert in the east bay. >> east bay serving to be the roughest commute this morning. let's get to the slow spots. a bit of a hot spot, a sig alert along northbound 880. lanes four and five are blocked, and we're seeing slowing on southbound 880 at decotto road involving a car fire. that has been cleared but the residual delays are backing up all the way behind eden shores boulevard. expect delays in that area as well. as far as the bay bridge, there's a crash on the westbound side if you're driving into the city before the toll plaza. one lane remains blocked. and your metering lights are on, so that coffee has to be to go,

pizza delivery didn )t pan out. nbc bay area responds to a bay area man whose pricey pizzi delivery didn't pan out. >> our team delivered a resolution. >> nguyen nguyen placed a pricey pizza delivery. he paid $110 for a pizza delivery via door dash. door dash reported the driver couldn't contact him by phone or texto she left. he later noticed he missed calls and texts but was miffed she never came to the door to try to deliver the door. after all, it's called door dash. nguyen turned to us to get his $110 back. we contacted door dash. it told us thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention. we have refunded and credited the customer to remedy the

dangerous air conditions here, not just down in l.a. >> yeah, the smoke is just being pushed down by the type of weather setup we have. if you can, catch public transit. that will help keep the cars off the road, and temperatures if you're heading to the dublin b.a.r.t. station in the upper 50s, and then partly cloudy skies. temperatures reaching the low nienltsz early this afternoon. later on this evening, the giants game happening at at&t park. first pitch at 7:15. cool and breezy there, only 62 degrees. and in san jose, we have the 49ers preseason game. it's a busy sports day all around the bay area. low yiet80s at kickoff and low later on tonight. we'll look at our microclimates and events going on around the bay area. the sig alert in the east bay has been canceled, right? >> it has, which is great news for those folks on northbound 880. let's get to where we had a hot

spot that has been cleared out. this is northbound 880 at fremont boulevard, all lanes are now open, and they're showing up as green on the map. however, now we have another issue on southbound 880 before whipple road. the number two lane is blocked because of a stalled vehicle. you can see that's causing heavy delays backed up through hayward and the 92 interchange. head out now. we'll look at the drive times because i have noticed slowing. southbound 880 to highway 84, 32 minutes. >> i'll send it back to you. >> thank you, vianey. >> happening today, a plan to spend millions to make b.a.r.t. safer for you and other passengers could take a step forward. this after three people were killed in a five-day period. >> bob redell is live at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station with a look at changes and the backlash some might be surprised about. >> good morning to you. yeah, b.a.r.t. is looking at whether or not to increase the number of days that its police

officers work. from five to six days a week. the idea being that they would get a greater presence out on the transit system and hopefully improve safety and security. but a published report indicates that the officers themselves are worried about being overworked. that the proposed six-day work week would be unsustainable. b.a.r.t. said the longer work week would be temporary if this proposal went through. a couple riders we have spoken with are onboard with this, especially after the recent murder of 18-year-old nia wilson who was stabbed to death at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. >> i think it would be a better idea, yeah. than what it is now. i get on b.a.r.t. and i stop at some of the other stations, and i can't find police at times. definitely extending the hours would be better. >> how safe do you feel? >> quite safe. i commute from walnut creek every morning. >> i think they need to add more hours for the officers?

>> i don't think it's necessary at this point, at least as far as my experience is concerned. >> we did reach out to the bay area council, a local public policy organization, just to get their take on this proposal. and that agency believes more needs to be done to help b.a.r.t. safer. that the transit agency should consider help from other local law enforcement agencies. nbc bay area has not yet heard back from the union representing b.a.r.t. police officers for their thoughts on this proposal. the b.a.r.t. board will discuss the new safety and security action plan in a few hours from now at a b.a.r.t. board meeting in oakland. bob redell, today in the bay. >> at the end of the day, i know passengers just want it safe. >> they want to feel safe and get there fast. thank you very much, bob. >> breaking news to tell you about just coming in to our newsroom. puerto rico is announcing hurricane maria killed many more people than what the government records show. the associated press reports that the government is now acknowledging that more than

1400 people were killed when that monster hurricane that struck last year hit. the original death toll was 64. puerto rican government is commissioning an academic study to figure out exactly how many people died. a harvard study from earlier this year also pointed out that hundreds died as a result of the hurricane. >> new details in a developing story you likely have heard about. so many children out of new mexico found in squalor, in filth inside a compound where we now know they were being taught how to kill. five adults were arrested at that compound outside of santa fe. the children ranged in age from 1 to 15. all of them, all 11, were found emaciated and living in deplorable conditions. court documents now reveal that the children were being trained to commit school shootings. a gun range and stockpile of loaded firearms were also found at the compound. this man is the father of one of the suspects and he says they believe they just wanted to

protect themselves. >> all they wanted to do is to get out of society, get away. homestead, and live a peaceful life by themselves. >> another layer to the story now. human remains were found on that compound, and they're being identified to see if they belong to the son of one of those suspects. the son was a severely disabled by who disappeared in december. >> the "today" show is live at 7:00. we'll show you why authorities now believe kids were becoming trained to be school shooters. 6:35 right now, and san francisco based airbnb is facing backlash. >> renting out an ancient cultural site as a hotel might not have been the best idea. airbnb canceled a contest to spend one night atop the great wall of china after people complained this was really insensitive. china's cultural commission said they had no knowledge of the publicity stunt. this is part of airbnb's at

night promotion. other locations included a top of a ski jump and a floating house in london. >> also new, if you're cutting through los gatos as a way to get to the beach faster and you behave badly, the city is planning on coming after you. the mercury news announced the mayor wants to increase hours of officer overtime so they can do more patrols but not until next summer. drivers are doing things like blowing through stop signs and driving the wrong way to try to cut down the drive time. not clear at this point if all of the violators are out of towners headed to the beach or perhaps if they're locals doing it too. >> definitely gets congested in that area. 6:36. unfortunately, the east bay still dealing with slowdowns, but good news. a thumbs up for clearing along northbound 880, fremont boulevard. all lanes are now open. no residble delays in that area. however, we still have delays on southbound 880.

the number two lane is blocked due to a stalled vehicle. that poor person out there having a tough morning. bridge drive times, also noticing slowing at the bay bridge. looking at 14 minutes. westbound 82, about 16 minutes, and live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights have been on since 5:30. one crash before the toll lanes has been cleared out nicely as well. >> thank you. just in time for your weekend weather. perhaps a long weekend because the kids are heading back to school. >> yeah, so that's like one of those things on the mind of all parents. what are we going to do? summer is almost over. there's a lot of festivals. we also have things going on around the bay area. i'm excited about the san jose jazz summer fest happening downtown. starts tomorrow, goes on all weekend. it will be nice and warm as you get out there, get your spot ready to enjoy some live music. cools down nicely in the evening. then heading into saturday, the bay will be at about 81 degrees. inland areas, 92. and still cool at the beaches.

on sunday, we see a repeat of that weather with some patches of fog for the coast and the inland areas reaching into the low 90s. you already have your tickets for outside lands? golden gate park is going to be packed this weekend. we have cool weather out there. if you're going to be out there during the middle of the day, it's going to be comfortable but it does cool off in the evening hours. goes on until 10:00 p.m. in the tri-valley, it's going to be hottest tomorrow. 96 degrees. and then you'll be able to enjoy some slightly cooler temperatures for the end of the weekend as we reach into the upper 80s. santa cruz, we're looking at mid 70s for tomorrow, but by sunday, we are most likely going to see clouds throughout much of the day. we're only going to reach 63 degrees there, and if you're going out hiking, enjoying some time outside with the family, it's going to be in the 60s throughout the weekend for muir woods and parts of the bay, drifts of smoke coming by. let me know your weekend plans.

new this morning: good thursday morning. 6:42. it starts out cloudy. we have smoke mixed in, and it creates that unhealthy air quality for today. as we take a live look outside in fremont, we're going to see the skies gradually clearing but staying hazy as the temperatures head to the mid 80s by 2:00 today. and if you're going to be out there, make sure you're careful about breathing in some of the smoke particles. we'll talk about what's going on with our air quality and our temperatures coming up in less than five minutes. and chp did issue a fog advisory, which remains in place for the golden gate bridge. look at that commute this

morning. we're starting to see more issues in the east bay along southbound 880. i'll have details on that coming up. well, new for you this morning, this on-ramp on northbound 680 is open again after a crash last night involving a tanker truck. the chp says that truck took the ramp too fast and that driver was injured. because of the truck oil spill, cleanup went into the early morning hours. crew husband the scene cleared a little before 4:00 a.m. >> stunning new developments in the beating of an elderly man. we anyhow no one of the suspects is the son of the chief of police for union city. police say 18-year-old tyrone mcalister brutally attacked a 71-year-old sikh man on monday while he was taking his morning walk. so hard to watch. the other suspect in the case, you see him there off screen, he is an unidentified 16-year-old. this morning, the victim's

its newest additions. look at these cuties here. in early june, a mama snow leopard had kittens. now, the zoo sent us the photos showing them right after they were born along with images of the proud parents and now the cubs are ready for their debut at noon today in their outdoor enclosure. the zoo says for the time being, the cubs will not be on permanent display for the public. but i'm not a big cat fan, but those -- >> those are cute. >> how can you resist? >> i would play with those until they start eating solid foods. >> you look delicious in your crocs, marcus. >> a good story earlier today about marcus and his crocs. if you're going to be wearing those today, maybe put on some socks in san francisco. it's going to be cool there, but inland, we're going to have some warmer weather. and as you start out this

morning, here's a look at all the low clouds and the smoke that's been mixing in. as we get a look at our view from emeryville towards san francisco. now it's another spare the air day. it's going to be unhealthy for the inland parts of the east bay, santa clara valley. we have been seeing it, smelling it. also, high ozone levels. if you can, catch public transit. that will help reduce carbon emissions and improve the air quality just a bit. if you're out the door in san jose heading to the station, it's going to be cool, upper 50s. then looking at upper 80s by early afternoon. it's going to heat up, and even faster in dublin today. we're going to also see the temperatures head from the upper 50s to 88 degrees by 1:00 today. here's a look at all of our microclimates. 95 today in concord. and in oakland today, up to 72 degrees. palo alto, 82. and 87 in san jose. we still have those upper 80s in much of the north bay. hotter than it was yesterday. so as you get a look out the window and get dressed this

morning, try to stay cool once again wearing the summer gear. now, as we get a look at the tropics and what's now tropical storm john, it's just to the west of baja, california. this will stay out over the open pacific, but this will have an impact on bay area weather early next week. we're still going to have dry conditions, but look at what happens by monday into tuesday. we start to see some greens and some blues here over the bay area. that's actually coming from the moisture that's left over from the remnants of john surging into the bay area. we're not expecting rain, but it may bring in a little more cloud cover, slightly cooler temperatures and also help in our fight against wildfires. the cal fire crews need higher humidity to try to get containment. that's good news that may also be a little more breezy. we can see how our temperatures respond coming down into the upper 80s, but look at today. still going to be hot, dry, smoky. inland valleys reaching 96

degrees. san francisco stays in the 60s over the next two days. no major changes there, may just feel a little more humidity early next week. let's head over to veaniy tracking the morning commute, and so far, we have started to see more people getting out on the roads and more problems. >> we have, which is causing more delays. but our hot spot this morning if you look at the rest of the bay ar area, south bay, slowing oun 101. our hot spot, the east bay. we're expecting to see slight clearing along 880. the reason is because there was an earlier crash right near the whipple road exit. that was blocking one of the lanes. now we're seeing also some delays along the southbound side. this crash just popped up right near the hayward area. i'm going to take a look at that and see what's going on there. aside from that, metering lights on at the bay bridge and you'll see delays from the maze to the bay bridge. back to you. speaking of driving, your drive home could be a nightmare if you go through the south bay. the reason why in a moment. >> plus, other top stories we're watching including today's final

chapter in the ghostship warehouse fire. >> first, happening now, tribune media is terminating its proposed merger with sinclair broadcasting. the nearly $4 billion deal would have combined two of the country's largest broadcasters into a giant with more than 200 stations. you might remember that sinclair came under fire after video came out of its news anchors across it country reading the exact same script over and over again. it's an organization that is considered very conservative that's been telling local stations what to report. more news after the break.

in the bay-- air quality conc welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top tostory on tod in the bay. >> air quality concerns today with another spare the air alert. the wildfires are raging state-wide, and still making it very hard to breathe in the bay area. these are the skies in san jose, fremont, emeryville, dublin. everybody is getting a little taste of that smoke. kari is back with us in a few moments on when we can expect the smoke to clear out. >> also, the red flag conditions continue to cause problems for firefighters across the state battling more than a dozen wildfires. these three are the biggest ones. here's the latest in those. thousands of firefighters are still battling the mendocino complex fire burning in lake and mendocino counties. as of last night, the fire burned 302,000 acres and is now

bigger than los angeles. it is also 47% contained. and the number of homes destroyed is now 119. now, to new video from southern california where conditions worsened yesterday for firefighters battling the holy fire. the u.s. forest service says this fire now destroyed at least 12 structures and burned 4100 acres. it is only 5% contained. that hasn't changed in days. and the carr wildfire remains under 50% contained. new reports of homes destroyed at this point but there are already 1,000 homes gone. the fire has burned 176,000 acres. and we're live at the alameda county superior court in oakland where a conclusion of the deadly warehouse fire begins today. derrick almena, the master tenant in the warehouse fire and max harris, creative director, are expected to be sentenced.
