this is "today" on savannah guthrie and hoda kotb from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and welcome to "today" on this thursday morning. >> and boy, the information coming out of new mexico this morning is really stunning. >> it is jarring. that's our top story. disturbing, new details about that raid on a compound in new mexico. authorities now believe children who were rescued were being trained at that remote site to possibly carry out school shootings. and the question is, could there be a connection to a radical mosque in brooklyn? nbc's gadi schwartz is at the scene with the very latest on this. hey, gadi. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. good morning, hoda. a pretty haunting scene out here, especially when you consider there were 11 kids that were living in these types of conditions. now, the property owner has given us permission to be right here. we're not going to go any further than this, but this is the outer wall. there is another inner wall there made of tires, and we are told that there is a tunnel of about 150 feet that stretches underneath this property. on the outskirts of this property, there is a makeshift

firing range where authorities think kids were being taught to shoot up schools. in this makeshift compound in rural new mexico, investigators not only found appalling conditions, but according to prosecutors, they may have uncovered a sinister plot. 11 emaciated children ages 1 through 15 were discovered along with an arsenal of high-powered firearms. in court filings, the district attorney says some of the kids were being trained with assault rifles in preparation for future school shootings. that information, the documents say, comes from one of the children now in foster care. >> there was a shooting range built on the west side of the property. >> reporter: authorities say the compound had been under surveillance for some time. a police raid triggered last friday after they learned of a text message from inside reading "we are starving and need food and water." authorities had initially been searching for abdul-ghani wahhaj, a child with severe medical problems allegedly abducted from georgia by his

father, siraj wahhaj. the distraught mother putting this post on facebook several months ago. >> i need your help. this is wahhaj. i'm missing him. >> reporter: wahhaj was one of the suspects arrested at the compound who was arraigned on wednesday. he enter eed no plea during an initial hearing. authorities are now waiting for test results to determine if the body found is little abdul. jason badger and his wife, tanya, who own the property, say they alerted authorities back in may that siraj and the missing boy were here, and at the time, they say the child was still alive. >> they were supposedly doing their investigations and watching them, and you know, this whole time i've been pressing them to do something, do something, you know. siraj is there, that little boy is there, and they weren't doing nothing. >> reporter: police say the fbi had been surveilling the property but weren't able to get photos positively identifying siraj wahhaj. >> there were photographs taken of children and others on the property. they were never identified as

being those targets. >> gadi, you talked about a connection with a mosque in brooklyn. what more can you tell us on that? >> reporter: yeah, hoda. it sounds like siraj wahhaj was the son of a prominent imam in the brooklyn area and that the mosque had a history of attracting radicals. in fact, the imam himself was indirectly linked to the 1993 world trade center bombing, but there is no indication that that imam has had direct ties to what's happening here. we are told instead that he may have been trying to help find his grandson when all of this happened. meanwhile, the five people who were arrested here are due in court on friday. savannah, hoda, back to you. >> gadi, thank you. also this morning, the trump administration is hitting russia hard with some new sanctions over the chemical attack on a former russian spy living in england. there's also some new drama over the special counsel's russia investigation and this possible interview between the president and robert mueller's team.

nbc national correspondent peter alexander's got all those headlines covered. hi, peter. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. rudy giuliani, the president's lawyer, now officially delivering his formal counterproposal to robert mueller about a presidential interview, telling me there is, quote, room to negotiate. it comes as the trump administration, as you note, is slapping new sanctions on russia, even as president trump is calling for warmer relations with the kremlin. it's one of president trump's repeated refrains -- >> russia's very unhappunhappy trump won. that i can tell you. >> claiming he's been far tougher on the kremlin than any president in years. >> reporter: this morning new ammunition for that argument. the trump administration imposing new sanctions on russia retaliating for the poisoning of a spy and his daughter last month using a deadly nerve agent. the sanctions likely to cut off hundreds of millions of dollars of sensitive national security equipment to russia.

a second more painful wave would ground russia's national airline that entering the u.s. if the kremlin doesn't demonstrate it won't use chemical weapons and refuses on site inspections by the u.n. conditions unlikely to be met. the move follows fierce criticism of the helsinki summit with mr. putin and trump's escalating attacks on russia witch hunt. top republicans among those pressuring the president to impose strict penalties. all this has mr. trump's lawyers rejected robert mueller's latest proposal for a presidential interview. rudy giuliani's position that any questions surrounding possible obstruction of justice should be off limits. >> the reality is he doesn't need to ask a single question on obstruction. he has all the answers. they're not going do change. the president is not going to change his testimony. stop the nonsense. you are trying to trap him into perjury because you don't have a

case. >> and peter, do we have any idea when this investigation is going to wrap up? we certainly heard a lot of estimates over these last months. >> reporter: to be clear, we're only hearing from rudy giuliani. we know when he wants it to wrap up. that's by september 1st, three weeks from now saying he doesn't want this investigation running into the november elections. last night dismissing it as ill legitimate saying it's going to blow up on mueller. one way to expedite it is if rudy giuliani agreed for the president to be interviewed by mueller. he's trying to wall off why the president fired james comey and two, what the president said to his former fbi director james comey about his former national security adviser michael flynn. that's one of the topics critical to this. it doesn't seem like something mueller would agree to not include. >> we hall see. peter, thank you. overnight, the new york congressman speaking out after being charged with insider

trading. stephanie gosk has the latest on this story. >> reporter: good morning. congressman collins is accused of scheming with his son to avoid significant losses on an investment. this morning he's fighting the charges and vowing to run for reelection. >> the charges that have been levied against me are meritless, and i will mount a vigorous defense in court to clear my name. >> reporter: overnight congressman chris collins responding to multiple charges from federal prosecutors. >> throughout my tenure in congress, i followed all rules and all ethical guidelines when it comes to my personal investments. >> reporter: but the u.s. attorney in new york, a trump appointee, says collins broke the law. >> congressman collins acted as if the law didn't apply to him. these charges are a reminder that this is a nation of laws. and that everybody stands equal before the bar of justice.

>> reporter: the crimes revolve around the australian pharmaceutical company, inate, collins and his son-in-law and future father-in-law face 13 criminal counts including securities fraud and false statements to invest guyer or thes. the ceo informed his board of directors including collins that the company's critical drug trial for a form of multiple sclerosis failed. news that have not yet public. congressman collins was at a picnic at the white house and minutes after getting the news, according to prosecutors, collins called his son to tell him, breaking federal law. cam r-- cameron collins called quickly. >> he avoided $570,000 in losses and took that illegal inside information and tipped others.

>> reporter: days later the stock would plummet. collins was the first to openly support donald trump's candidacy in 2013. vowing to fight the charges against him, he's fighting to clear his name. >>. >> i'll continue to work hard for the people of the 27th congressional district of new york, andly remain on the ballot. >> steph, put a dollar figure on this. how much money was saved by selling the stock? >> prosecutors say the defendants altogether saved something like 750,000 plus on this stock. the large majority being collins' son cameron. when the news broke about the failure of the drug trial, the stock for the company dropped 92%. >> wow. >> wow. >> if you were holding that stock, you weren't happy that day. >> or if you were the people that bought that stock from them in the days leading up to that day, think about those people.

they had no idea. >> thank you. >> you're welcome. now growing outrage in the wake of a deadly police shooting in nashville. newly released video shows a white officer shooting a black man running away. now the mayor is ordering a comprehensive review and the man's family is demanding justice. >> reporter: good morning. no charges filed and the police union says the shooting was justified. several activists and the city's acting vice mayor are now calling on the police chief to step down. this morning growing outrage after video shows a nice nashville officer shooting a black suspect as he ran away. a man died a short time later. >> i feel like if a person is running away from you, how do they pose a threat? >> reporter: the mother is in agony and calling for justice.

>> my -- don't deserve this. please leave us alone. just leave us alone. >> reporter: the nashville district attorney's office released the video from july 26th. the tennessee bureau of investigation says that earlier that evening officers were looking for stolen vehicles and tried to stop a car driving erratically. authorities say this man got out of the car and ran and he was carrying this gun. >> our only child. >> reporter: protests followed. >> my child -- the officer is now on administrative leave. >> if there's ever a case of premedicated first degree murder, this is it. this is it. he stops and takes his time and makes sure he gets a good shot. >> reporter: the mayor is promising a comprehensive review of police procedures? >> this was a tragic event. my prayers go out to his mother. >> reporter: at the latest

people's choice awards. >> and the oscar goes to -- >> and the oscar goes to -- this morning the academy of motion picture arts and sciences, the group in charge of the oscars announcing big changes to tinsel town's biggest night. a shorter three-hour broadcast. a new category honoring popular films and an earlier date for the 2020 ceremony. viewed as an attempt to boost ratings. >> the academy had to do something. fewer people were watching the show and it's because they're just not familiar with the films in contention and some of the categories that they're not interested in. >> reporter: perhaps the biggest change, the new award celebrating achooemt in popular film. the exact details and requirements have not been released, but some say it could guarantee recognition for block busters like "black panther". and "avengers infinley war".

attorney says the alarming claim is coming from one of the children who is now in foster care. police say they found high powered weapons and a shooting range on the compound. the remains of one young children were found there. the accused leader is the son of a person in new york who has been linked to radical islam and may have had a connection to the world trade center bombing. a man accused of making arson threats has been accused with starting a massive california wildfire. police arrested the man on wednesday. they say he purposely set the fire near his cabin in the woods. a volunteer fire chief who lives nearby says clark was feuding with his neighbors and sent an e-mail last week that read this place will burn. now evacuations had to be ordered last night. the fire in cleveland national forest burned out of control for a third day. a burglary suspect in

last time. it would be a nightmare for any parent. 9-year-old carter gray and his 7 7-year-old sister etta traveling on a frontier airline flight chaperoned by a frontier employee. but the plane and the kids never show up at their final destination. as this actual tracking map from flightaware.com shows, frontier 757 took off from des moines heading to orlando at 7:25 a.m. expected arival, 10:46 p.m. syr severe storms cause it to divert to atlanta. arriving at the gate there at 12:12:00 a.m. the parents say they knew the plane landed there from apps. >> it was almost instant terror. you're not with your kids at this point. you're kind of out of control. >> reporter: chad says the first time they heard from their kids was when the nine-year-old borrowed a cell phone and texted him shortly after the plane

landed. around 4 a.m. chad says he got a second text from his son that he and his sister were being taken by a frontier employee to a hotel and would stay overnight. >> no supervisor tried to call. no phone call. no e-mails. nothing like that ever took place. we were really in the dark. >> reporter: in a statement the airline writes our records show the children were in contact with their mother before being transported to the hotel. and with their father the following morning. >> reporter: this 2014 frontier commercial proudly talks about how it handles kids. >> by treating our tiniest guests like the biggest deal. >> reporter: thein a statement y think in keeping with frontier's policy the children were attended to at all times by a frontier employee. >> reporter: according to their father the kids were put in separate rooms with other enaccompanied minors.

>> my son slept with a boy that was five years older than him. >> reporter: frontier's statement says we understand how an unexpected delay caused by weather can be stressful for a parent. >> parents need to do a little more research and probably worry about this a little more. never did we think this would happen. >> so many questions. but what does the law say about all of this? >> reporter: well, we were surprised to learn in researching this story that there are no federal regular rations regarding unaccompanied minors. it's up to each airline to come up with its own rules on how to get kids safe ly from point a t point b. check the airline rules and if your children doesn't end up where they're supposed to. >> blake, thank you. meantime, another new twist this morning in the heated divorce battle between angelina jolie and brad pitt.

natalie is following this story for us in los angeles. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the gloves are coming off in this dispute. on tuesday jolie accused pitt or not paying enough child support for their six children. his team is denying that. on wednesday they responded if their own court filing making new allegations against jolie. this morning brad pitt is fighting back after his estranged wife, angelina jolie accused him of not paying meaningful child support for their six children. in new documents obtained pitt's team says it's a thinly vailed effort to manipulate media coverage. pitt adamantly disputes he has not paid child support. it argues he's paid over 1 $.3 million in bills for jolie and the kids, and the sudden effort to schedule a hearing is

calculated to cause coverage. pitt's new filing contends he loaned jolie $8 million to assist her in purchasing her current residents. this 11,000 square foot manks in l.a. jolie's rep responded saying when the couple separated brad kept the house and was asked to assist in the expense of a new home for angelina and the children but instead he loaned angelina money for which he is charging her interest on a payment plan. angelina will honor that loan. a loan is not, however, child support and to represent it as such is misleading and inaccurate. >> reporter: this escalating the battle between the stars. after 12 13 years ago jolie filed for divorce in 2016 speaking about it to the bbc. >> it was a very difficult time, and we are a family. and we will always be a family. >> reporter: in 2017 pitt talked

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i just can't describe how desolate this area is. you can see off the horizon there's no one around. then you see this over here. this is disturbing to think that there were 11 kids inside this place living in basically squaller. you see this wall right here. this is the outer perimeter. there's another inner wall right there made of tires. then there's a tunnel of about 150 feet. that tunnel is where a small child's body was found earlier this week. and now we know authorities saying that this is where they believe children were being caught how to shoot up schools. >> in this makeshift compound in rural new mexico, investigators found appalling conditions and may have uncovered a sinister plot. 11 children ages one through 13 were found along with high power firearms.

the district attorney says some of the kids were being trained with assault rifles in preparation for future school shootings. that information is from one of the children in foster care now. >> there was a shooting range on the left side of the property. >> reporter: authorities say the compound was under surveillance for some time. a police raid triggered last friday after they learned from a text message inside reading we are starving and need food and water. authorities were initially searching for a child with severe problems allegedly abducted from georgia by his father. officials say the man is the son of a man linked in the past to radical islam and may have had a connection to the world trade center bombings. the man was arrested and arraigned on wednesday. authorities now waiting for test results to determine if the body found is the little boy. jason badger and his wife to own the property say they alerted authorities that they were here.

financial editor. a lot of brick and mortar stores retail they're not doing well, but the discount stores are. why? >> part of it is that success breeds success. there's a lot of inventory. you go in. it doesn't feel like a ghost town like your regular maul. but you also see some of the same designer brands that you see at the full price stores. just be careful. some of that merchandise is being made specifically for the discount stores like outlet merchandise. so some of it's not the same quality. >> i used to be a really good t.j. maxx shopper. i knew when to go. when the deliveries come in. is that the first tip? >> yes. i want to point out there are some regional differences. but these are the guidelines. for last call neiman marcus, they restock wednesday and friday. go in the early morning. t.j. maxx gets new inventory most days of the week. split the difference on wednesdays. nordstroms have a clear the rack

that certain dress. you're not going to find it. go in with an open mind. walk the aisles. think about how people shop these stores. they take things out of their carts. you might find a frying pan in the shoe department that might be a a great frying pan. the manager knows when the next merchandise is coming. they can clue you in, and buy and return. you find something fabulous, don't put it back and think i'm going to think about this. the return policies are pretty lenient. so take it home with you. leave the tags receipt. you may want to take it back. don't let the clearance rack scare you off. they're a big fat mess. >> i don't know you anymore. this is the opposite of what you've been saying to me for six years. >> i know, but i am really good at discount stores. i get the $100 that used to be 750.
