steal a passenger jet this morning. investigators are piecing together just how it happened. >> to a massive sink hole that tried to swallow the car except for passerby and teamwork that saved the day. "early today" starts now. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. exactly one year after demonstrations in charlottesville, virginia turned deadly, a small group of white nationalists showed up for eye planned protest in the nation's capital. but they were outnumbered by throngs and counter protesters. >> there were some tense moments, but security was tight and the protests were largely peaceful. coming as a relief to law enforcement who had been gearing up for this day for months. nbc's nikki carvajal has the latest. >> reporter: lots of people in dc, it was a tense weekend leading up to the protest with permits for about 400 people filed for the unite the right rally. ultimately, only about 20 showed up and by some accounts it was even fewer than that.

they were far outnumbered by counter protesters. thousands of people took to the streets. there was some shouting between the two groups, but never any physical interaction. they were kept very far separated by police. some counter protesters towards the end of the night were sort of antagonizing police throwing bottles. they were pepper sprayed. other than that police say it was a peaceful protest and they're proud of the work that they did. >> the folks out there on the lines take all that verbal abuse, but to be able to stand up here today and nobody -- know that nobody was killed and nobody got hurt in our city is a little sense of pride there for our folks. >> unite the right blamed weather for why they wrapped up the protest so quickly. but definitely a very stark contrast to what happened in charlottesville last year. phillip and frances? >> we're all thankful for that. nikki, thank you. >> hundreds of protesters gather ed in in the city of charlottesville itself and in

stark contrast for the tumultuous clashes last year, protests were largely peaceful leading to only few arrests. the day also largely focused on healing. many there taking a moment to remember the woman who was killed in last year's violence. nbc's mia rodriguez has the story from charlottesville. >> reporter: there was tight security especially here at the site where 32-year-old heather heyer was killed and several dozen others were injured last year when police say james fields drove his vehicle into a group of counter protesters. now, today there have been some standoffs between protesters and law enforcement but no injuries were reported. however there, were four arrests. some of the protesters are affiliated with antifa, the antifascist movement. and they were basically protesting the heavy police presence we saw here this weekend while others were out pushing a message that racism will not be tolerated. susan bro, the mother of heather heyer, made her way to the memorial basically paying tribute to her daughter on the street that has now been renamed

heather heyer way. in the meantime, the statue of robert e. lee which was the focal point of so much of the anger last year-ending up in protests is still in the park because there is a state law that prohibits the removal of these confederate monuments. >> maya, thank you. >> president trump believes they are ready to handle any findings from mr. mueller. trump attorney and former new york mayor rudy giuliani says the team is prepared to rebut any conclusions from the investigation into russian election meddling. giuliani telling the paper, quote, a negative report gets it over with. we can answer it with i think a better report from us and then we get to wait and see what happens in congress. the legal team has also sent a proposal to mueller about a possible sit-down with the president. giuliani told the journal there won't be an interview until after september 1st to avoid interfering with the midterms. >> meanwhile the first trial of the special counsel investigation gets back underway this afternoon. the prosecution is expected to

rest their case against former trump campaign chairman paul manafort today. he is facing tax and bank fraud charges that predate his time with the campaign. >> lingering questions this morning after a horizon air employee was able to steal and crash an empty passenger plane. 29-year-old richard russell took the 76-seat passenger plane for a joy ride before slamming it into an island an hour later and is presumed to be dead. they have located the human remains and await the results from the medical examiner's office. hans nichols is is there to give us a deeper look. hans? >> reporter: phillip, we're learning more about the life and passions of richard russell and how many friends he had, at the same time investigators are still trying to determine how he crossed a busy tarmac and made it all the way onto runway 16 c before taking off. >> oh, my god. what is happening right now? >> reporter: before richard russell made it into the sky in

a horizon air dash 8, investigators want to know how he made it across a crowded tarmac onto a runway at seattle c tack airport. causing confusion in the control tower, and a call to the military. with a pair of f-15s on his tail, russell stayed airborne for more than an hour before dying in a faiiery crash. thousands of ramp workers and mechanics have the same broad access russell had. >> for me the biggest red flag is that this is something that aviation security is not designed to prevent. >> reporter: making an insider attack one of the biggest potential threats to commercial aviation. >> we're fortunate in the sense that it wasn't a terrorist, somebody who was focused on causing mass destruction. what this incident did was demonstrate a vulnerability that is still existing here almost 17

years after 9/11. >> reporter: as investigators work to determine if tighter security could have prevented russell's flight, a video he made revealed a man who enjoys his work. >> look at all them bags. ooh, a purple one. >> reporter: and loved to travel. his final act leaving a family in grief, and friends in morning. >> he was friends with everyone. some of us are lucky to have one or two friends, really good friends. he had dozens of really good friends. >> reporter: and many of those friends just saw the guy they call bebo at their 10th high school reunion up in alaska, one of them saying he appeared to be in good spirits. phillip? >> all right, hans, thank you for that report. >> a global heat wave is drawing new attention to the threat of climate change. with this summer's extreme weather in europe, australia and across the globe, scientists are beginning to sound the alarm. here's nbc's matt bradley. >> reporter: in germany, fish are drowning. in switzerland, thirsty cows are getting air lifts of water.

in southern australia, one of the worst droughts in history during their winter. >> this is certainly uncharted waters. it's not a record that we're happy about. >> reporter: this summer's global heat wave has seen some topsy-turvy weather drawing new attention to the hot thirsty elephant in the room, climate change. worldwide the past four years have been the hottest ever recorded, and it's only been a year since president trump withdrew from the paris agreement on climate change. >> the paris accord would undermine our economy, hamstring our workers, weaken our sovereignty. >> reporter: but withdrawing won't trump a scientific consensus. researchers almost all agree human activity is causing the earth to warm. and they cite this summer as evidence. >> this year will obviously go down in the record books as a ravaging summer of heat. the earth seems like it's literally on fire. >> reporter: professor kim cobb spent the year measuring the

police officer caught on camera repeatedly punching a man has resigned from the force, excuse me. a bpd spokesperson confirld it. a bystander recorded the brawl

saturday after the officers approached the man on the street. the baltimore police officer has not identified that officer but says he has been on the force for just over a year. and that the incident had escalated after the man had refused to show his i.d. well, the man identified as 26-year-old deshaun mcguire was not charged with a crime. he was hospitalized with a broken jaw, among other injure us. according to his lawyers he had a previous run in with the same officer back in june. online records show he faced several charges then including assault and resisting arrest. the bpd said the second officer in the video has been assigned to administrative duties as this remains an active criminal investigation. >> a blast of slightly cooler weather is providing southern california firefighters with some much needed help as they continue to battle the raging holy fire. the blaze believed to have been set by an arsonist with a grudge against the neighborhood has burned through more than 22,000 acres of dry timber and brush, but with the flames already 51%

contained, officials say they should continue to make better progress over the next few days. officials report that northern california's ranch fire, the largest part of the record-breaking mendocino complex fire, is currently 62% contained. >> dangerously high floods continue to disrupt the u.s. this summer. water levels reached new heights in texas over the weekend. causing an emergency rescue for those trapped. first responders air lifted 27 people from chuck bluff park and brought them to safety. the sheriff's office announced the successful mission on facebook. some of those rescued received medical attention but no major injuries were reported. >> it happened so quickly. they came and nearly a foot of rain and it happened so fast. again, when you're out there in the elements and it's coming down like that, you put others' lives at risk too. >> we see that over and over again with a lot of us getting down pours over the weekend. >> all over the country as well. just ahead, tiger woods nearly clawed his way to the top of the final stop of the pga tour. we'll show you the highlights
