he became a prime suspect in the 1975 murder of a community college teacher in the county. police say that he is also connected to 100 burglaries in the area. across the area he is charged with 12 murders and is suspected of committing up to 50 rapes. a killer will be back in a san jose courtroom today. he is hoping a change in law could set him free. he was 16 when he helped his friend kill another teenager in 2009. the victim was murdered in what investigators call a satanic ritual. voters passed proposition 57 which helps nonviolent offenders get out of jail. they fear it could use the new law to argue he should not have been tried as an adult and the conviction should be thrown out. a push to end late night

jail releases. this coming after a woman overdosed shortly after being released in dublin. 26-year-old jessica st. louis was released late last month. she was given a bart ticket. the nearest a mile away. it doesn't start running until 9:00 a.m. local lawmakers say it could have been avoided. legislation is being written to require dereleases. more federal government officials are heading to reading today. secretaries of agriculture will be holding meetings on the car fire this afternoon. they visited last week. so far president trump has not visited any areas of california. the carr fire is more than 60% contained. >> panic there. there th is new footage showing the moments the fire in

around oakland and reaching into the upper 60s later today. let's check out all of our temperatures. up to 92 in gilroy. it will be just as hot as it has been recently. parts of our inland valleys we'll reach into the upper 90s. oakland 72. half-moon bay at 59 degrees. mostly upper 50s to low 60s. this is reaching 89 degrees. there will be a slight increase in humidity today. it may make it feel a little bit warmer than the temperature and then as we go towards wednesday then the humidity will decrease. this is really good news. it will help the firefighters trying to get containment farther to the north. this is left over remnants of what was a tropical storm. it is surging in some of that higher humidity across the bay area. as we look at our temperatures

reaching the upper 80s and low 90s for the next few days with some of our inland valleys reaching into the upper 90s. we may have something closer to 100 degrees for the weekend. it will heat up once again unfortunately. we are not going to keep this break. keeping the same temperatures, mostly mid-60s throughout the week. you're tracking a hazard in san jose. >> i tracked it until it got cleared. this is highway 87. it is now cleared through the roadway. it is probably a disabled vehicle that finally got off to the shoulder. a smooth flow of traffic. this is highway 4 and 80 over there. the back up at the bay bridge clearing and we'll probably see metering lights on any second. we are looking at headlights. a little bit of low clouds. the drive is just fine for these

man. >> he did everything in life with a certain amount of passion that i think everyone was envy use of. >> they say russell had the same board security access that thousands of workers and mechanics have. it is a potential security gap at the nation's airport. today local leaders are discussing security protocol. a tragic weekend. a car plunges off a freeway ramp killing two people. it happened just after 4:00 on sunday morning on highway 24 at the 680 connector. police say 18-year-old from antioch was driving when her car flew offer the connector. in addition to the driver a total of tour passengers all 18 years old were in that vehicle. two of them, both men, were killed at the scene. police say two other female passengers were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. police say he was arrested and

vegetation fire. it is an area contaminated by hazardous waste. it happened about 1:00 this morning. it was a multi-vehicle crash with a van rolling over trapping six people inside. it took firefighters nearly an hour to get them out. everyone is expected to survive. they say at least one person in the crash was arrested for driving under the influence. 5:45 right now. today is the first day of school for a number of students across the bay area. for hundreds of high schoolers opportunities will be turning to an extra layer of security here.
