"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin this morning with breaking news out of london. a car has crashed into the barriers outside of parliament and has prompted a large police response. at least one person has been arrested there, and there are reports of injuries. for more on this, let's go right to vincent mcveinny who is there on the scene. vincent, what can you tell us there? >> hi. good morning. i was on the green outside of parliament when there was a loud bang from around the corner. people started running. and when i ran towards it, a car had smashed into the anti-terrorism barriers just outside of the house of commons. people were running away from it. a pedestrian i spoke to said that the car was driving fast and drove purposely into those barriers. within about 60 seconds, there were armed police response units all around the car.

about three to four big suv vehicles, each of those carrying about three officers with machine guns all jumping out. there were about 10 to 15 police officers were guns pointed. others were rushing out of parliament as well. at the car, smoke was coming from the bonnet, which was pretty impacted, and they were yelling at the car. they pulled out a man. he was about 6 feet tall. he had a beard. they have now arrested him. they have continued to move pedestrians and the public back from parliament, shutting down all the roads in central london. more emergency response vehicles have poured in. ambulances, fire engines, and police cars and police motor bikes. over the police radio we have heard they are treating this as counterterrorism and they're advising people to stay away from this area. they're also saying a number of pedestrians have been injured. i've spoken to people who saw the crash directly, and they said they thought some people did get hurt in this incident. >> vincent, thank you for painting the picture there

outside of parliament where a car has crashed. more breaking news out of california where the largest wildfire is the state's history has claimed the life of a firefighter. state fire officials confirm that a firefighter from utah assigned to the raging mendocino complex fire has died, marking the sixth fatality connected to the wildfires scorching california. >> that blaze composed of the ranch fire and the river fire has burned through nearly 350,000 acres. firefighters are gaining ground on the flames with the ranch fire 59% contained and the river fire 100% contained. friends and family of aretha franklin are rushing to her side amid reports the queen of soul is gravely ill in detroit. a source close to the singer has reportedly told cnn that the 76-year-old is in hospice care at her home. the singer has been battling failing health in recent years, canceling concerts last summer.

president's fitness for office. she's talking about his mental state, and she's releasing tapes. one of them which was recorded in the white house situation room. the president's current allies calling that inappropriate and questioning whether or not it's even legal, and they're really going after omarosa's credibility. one of the more explosive claims that you mentioned is this rumored tape. this has been talked about in hollywood circles for a couple years now, that the president during filming of the apprentice used the n-word. she addressed that yesterday with nbc's chris matthews, and she talked about his overall treatment of african-americans. >> it sounded as if he used it every day. it rode off his mouth kind of like when you first heard the "access hollywood" tape. you would never imagine he talked that way. it kind of rolled off of his tongue. as i've seen today just having him call me out of my name, call me a low-life, say that i'm not intelligent, this is what he does when it comes to african-americans. >> reporter: so in response to these claims, the president saying that in the past, omarosa

has called him a great civil rights champion and that didn't change until she got fired. omarosa also says that she believes that these tapes will be released, and she thinks they'll be released before the november midterm. phillip? >> never short on the drama there. thank you. new questions this morning over the fbi's decision to fire an agent caught at the center of a political firestorm. senior counterintelligence agent peter strzok faced claims of bias after sending anti-trump text messages in the weeks before the election. the president cheered the news of strzok's firing, but his lawyer says it was the result of political pressure, and strzok has growing support. a gofundme has already raised $184,000 for him. justice correspondent pete williams tells us more. >> reporter: once one of the fbi's top counterintelligence agents, peter strzok is out, fired over text messages he exchanged during the campaign with an fbi lawyer, lisa page, about donald trump. in one, she asks, he's not ever going to become president,

capitol hill, repeatedly called for strzok to be fired. so it's not a secret back door thing. they are publicly demonizing this man and saying he should no longer be an agent. >> our thanks to pete williams for that report. another small plane crash out west. this time in utah, killing the pilot. but investigators say it was no accident. police say dwayne yout was arrested hours before the crash for allegedly assaulting his wife. after being released on bail, he purposefully flew the plane into the home with his wife and a young child still inside. according to authorities, the house quickly became engulfed by fl flames. we turn now to the major flood emergency racing across the east coast. millions under flash flood watches after relentless rain. roads and homes completely swamped, triggering widespread evacuations and dramatic high water rescues. this one here happening in pennsylvania. a 12-year-old trapped in the middle of a raging creek, pulled

safely back to shore. and another scare in pennsylvania after some 30 rafters were reported missing in a swollen river. but after an hours-long, multi-county search, all are now accounted for. the wild weather also giving way to this rare phenomenon here, a waterspout spotted spinning off the shore in new jersey. the flood threats there continue with word that more rain is on the way. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here again with more on our weather. >> the rainfall is going to be in the forecast for the northeast but not like the downpours of saturday and not like the downpours of yesterday. this is how that map is going to play out. you notice at 10:00 a.m., area near rochester, syracuse, potential for heavy rainfall. then by 5:00 p.m. tuesday, hit and miss scattered storms. these are not the huge downpours like we've had the last couple days. this is more of your typical afternoon storms. it finally begins to exit as we go through this evening. again, we still have some people under the flash flood watches. a lot of them have been dropped now, which is good.

an unarmed man who was dead. 48-year-old michael drejka pulled the trigger, attempted to use the stand your ground as a defense. after an investigation, he is now facing manslaughter charges. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the details. >> reporter: michael drejka is in jail charged with manslaughter. he's seen in this surveillance video last month shooting marquise mcglockton. >> i've been in i guess a daze because that was my baby. so today when i heard that he was getting charged, i guess i could start healing. >> reporter: mcglockton had gone inside a convenience store in clear water, florida, with one of his kids to buy snacks. outside drejka confronts his girlfriend about parking in a handicapped spot. mcglockton leaves the store and shoves drejka to the ground, who then pulls a gun and shoots him. >> he felt after being slammed to the ground that the next

in today's top stories, the defense will get to work first thing this morning in the trial of former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. prosecutors finally rested their case after ten days of testimony. and now the defense team is expected to begin calling witnesses. manafort is facing charges for tax evasion and bank fraud that pre-date his time with the campaign. meanwhile, his attorneys have filed a motion to acquit several of his charges tied to loans made by the federal savings bank, saying the government failed to show he misled the bank in their case. the fda has approved a smartphone app for digital birth control. the app natural cycles uses body temperature and a woman's cycle to calculate when she is most likely to get pregnant. it then recommends no safe or

safe sex. experts are skeptical about whether this is an effective means of natural contraception for women who want to avoid getting pregnant. studies show the app is 93% effective. as vaping grows among teens, the fda is trying to fight back. more than 2 million middle and high school teens use e-cigarettes. that's nearly 12% of high school students and 3% of middle school students who vaped in the past 30 days according to the cdc. this puts teens at high risk for developing nicotine addictions, the fda says. the administration is now considering banning flavored liquids as these are believed to draw teens to e-cigarettes, and next month they'll launch a vaping prevention campaign targeted specifically at teens. a north carolina woman was out shopping when she was accused of hiding merchandise under her shirt. turns out she was just pregnant. >> i wanted to just hide under the blankets and just crawl under it and just hide from the world. i felt so ashamed, so humiliated.

>> she is 34 weeks pregnant with twins and was doing her back to school shopping for her son at a charlotte area staples. as she went to pay for the items, a police officer who had been contacted by the manager confronted her about what she was concealing beneath her shirt. she replied, twins, and even lifted her shirt exposing her belly to prove to the officer she was not stealing merchandise. staples says that manager has now been fired. >> fired and embarrassed. you got to be 100% sure on that. a long lost nude scene from marilyn monroe's final film has been discovered. the footage is from a movie called the misfits. it was shot in 1961 during a love scene with clark gable but was cut by the director. while working on a biography of the movie star, author charles casillo discovered that the footage was locked in a safe by producer frank taylor. that now belongs to his son. the scene would have been one of the first nude scenes by an american actress at the time, and i can't believe how many people are going to line up to purchase this.
