"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> and i'm phillip mena. the catholic church is reeling following a scathing new report including 300, quote, predator priests of abusing more than a thousand boys and girls for decades. the report alleges church leaders in six roman catholic diocese in pennsylvania executed a massive cover up of sexual abuse claims to avoid scandal. >> at 1,356 pages, the report is being described as the largest and most comprehensive investigation into child sex abuse within the catholic church in the.snbs ann thompson has th details. >> reporter: in searing damning language, the grand jury report revealed the dark secrets of the catholic church in pennsylvania. priests were raping little boys

and girls and the men of god who were responsible for them did nothing: they hid it all. >> it was child sexual abuse, including rape, committed by grown men, priests against children. >> reporter: the report found over a thousand child victims identified in the church's own records. the alleged crimes often described as inappropriate contact or boundary issues. >> i am so angry. >> reporter: julianne abobort s the church was hiring a private investigator. >> it wasn't him they were looking at, they were looking at me. >> reporter: the report finding a pattern among bishops and church leaders. the main thing was not to help children, but to avoid scandal. it names more than 300 predator priests in six diocese, from one end of the state to the other, home to more than 1.7 million catholics. almost every instance of abuse

too old to be prosecuted, but the investigation did result in two priests being criminally charged with sexually assaulting children during the past decade. from the diocese, apologies. >> i ask you, the church asks you for forgiveness. >> reporter: but for some, words are not enough. >> people want total transparency. they want the bishops to report what happened, why it happened, and how they're going to make sure that it never happens again. >> reporter: many of those same bishops and their past handling of abuse cases are implicate ed in this investigation, including cardinal donald wirl, the former bishop of pittsburgh. wirl now in washington said he acted with diligence to protect victims and prevent future abuse. the grand jury had recommendations four of them, including removing the statute of limitations which thendrote predators than victims. and it also wants to get rid of

those nondisclosure agreements in criminal cases. marlie? >> thank you, ann, for that report. >> the search for survivors continues in italy after a freeway bridge collapsed in the city of genoa. this morning the death toll rising to 35 with at least 15 others injured. it happened on a major highway connecting genoa to beaches on the italian riviera and france's southern coast. all of this happening on the eve of a major italian holiday. nbc's chapman bell joins us now from london with the very latest. chapman, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, fep. and as you say, that death toll has now risen to at least 35 according to local authorities in genoa. but they have found survivors. rescue teams working through the night -- take a look at this drone video released by the fire service in italy. this shows teams digginghrou the rubble using heavy machinery, but searching very carefully, lighting up the area surrounding that pile of concre.yeerday, part of that fr bridge. also using thermal imaging from that camera as they search for

survivors. that search operation continues this morning as hundreds of emergency workers including sniffer dogs methodically search for survivors. it's been described as a search similar to that following in earthquakes, something these italian emergency services will have experience in using winches and cutting tools and crawling through tight spaces amid the tons of concrete and twisted metal from the bridge, as well as vehicles that were caught up in that collapse. there are reports that authorities believe more than 30 vehicles were on that section of road when it came crashing down in the heavy storm. one survivor describing the scene on italian tv as something out of a film like an apocalypse, and saying as the roadbe alive. phillip? >> devastating to see those images. chapman, thaourumps lashing out against his former white house aide omarosa manigault newman over her explosive

scents from gain. leading the news, in colorado an endangered missing alert has been issued for a pregnant mother and her two young daughters. 34-year-old shannon watts and her daughters ages 3 and 4 were reported missing monday. watts is 15 weeks pregnant. they were last seen in the frederick area. police say the children may have medical concerns. the epipen, one of the girls needs for her severe allergies

was found at home along with watts' car, phone, wallet and i.d.s. right now police say they don't have enough information to say whether this disappearance is suspicious. >> as the search continues for a missing university of iowa student, 20-year-old mollie tibbetts, investigators are now focusing their attention on five locations. the locations are in and around brooklyn, iowa where mollie went missing after going for a job on july 18. they include a travel centers of america truck stop and a dnm car wash. investigators say they have not ruled out any scenario including the possibility that fowl play was involved. >> the university of maryland under fire this morning for the death of a college football player. the school's president wallace low apologizing for the tragedy and admitting to mistakes that led to the heat stroke death of jordan mcnair who collapsed at practice in may. the team's coach d.j. and members of his staff were all placed on leave. nbc's miguel almaguer has more
