bridges and roads getting a bad break. it is is according to a new report just released this morning. the bad roads are costing you thousands of dollars. >> we are live with a close are look at this new report. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you. this new report put out by transportation research group found that the roads are not costing you hundreds of dollars per year but rather thousands of dollars. if you take a look at your tv screen they found well over majority of roads opened and are either in poor or mediocre condition. the cost to you between 2,700. the average san francisco oakland driver is about 80,000

annually. you also have vehicle repairs, gasoline and traffic accidents. it has caused about a third of the accidents in san francisco and oakland. you can see there were 162 people. the report makes the point that k california's economy would improve if it would fix its roads. they passed the gas tax last november which is expected to raise $50 billion for transportation over the next ten years. that's assuming voters don't this november which would repeal. reporting live here in concord, today in the bay. >> thanks so much. it is 5:03 right now. continuing coverage on the feud between the president and former white house staffer. so far it seems there is no end

being hit by a driver. this is last night. it happened in the tenderloin just before 7:00. officers placed a man in handcuffs. we don't know if it's in connection with that crash. a deadly accident on the twin peaks tunnel project in san francisco. signal technician died after he was hit by a steel beam on friday. we looked through the records. they found this is the second death tied to the oakland based contractor. we learned they fined schmit construction more than $190,000 for aljed willful violations in 2011. however in a 2011 survey they answered no when asked if either had been sited for any serious and willful by --.

progress on the wild fires burning in the state. they continue talks on thousand prevent the fires. another hearing on wild fire preparedness is scheduled for tomorrow at the state capital. we have been telling you about these hearings. yesterday lawmakers focused on forest management including removing more than 120 million dead trees. we all know the dead trees could fuel the fires if they get out of hand. >> it is time to make sure everything is clear away from your home. as we get a live look outside we are enjoying a nice little break from really hot temperatures. let's go through the day and check out how our day shapes up. we'll be in the low 60s through about 10:00. it is much cooler in half-moon bay and maybe even mist and

glad you're with us. apple investors unphased by the plan to boycott all apple products. home depot says it saw lots of customers in its stores and they spent a lot of money, more than wall street expected. home depot is more or less amazon proof. it is unlikely you'll buy a shower door from amazon. why do we care about home depot? the economy is as you know on fire. it would appear the consumer is beginning to believe that as spending goes up. we get lots of data on retail spending this week. we'll see if that trend continues. the ceo of twitter will be on nightly news answering questions about twitter's policies.

a growing concern over the mental health of firefighters as their relentless battle continues against new this morning there's

growing concern over the mental health of firefighters. not just exhaustion firefighters are dealing with, there's also loss. six firefighters have died in the line of duty in the last four weeks. programs like critical incident stress management gives mental health professionals to crews quickly. here is a battalion chief talking about how important it is for firefighters to open up. >> when we have an issue and we have been ton job far while, for us to say it's okay to talk and it's okay to say i'm not okay. >> fire officials say emotional support and time for rest and recooperation help firefighters cope with the season's intense workload. clanhanges are on the way. it comes after trump signs a new law aimed at improving services. it could be a possible shift to

>> i'm laura garcia. we do have serious news this morning. mike has been following traffic situations out there. >> it is near sfo. let me take you through this live shot. they pull out more flares. they are laying them out right here. it is blocking the right two lanes on northbound 101. as we get out we'll show you this as traffic travels north up towards broadway. things start to slow down. folks are exiting towards broadway. you can get up towards sfo. if you want to travel north of there you can use 280. we don't have an opening time for chp. they have not had anybody arrive there yet. i will say it will not be before 6:30. it will be a problem for folks traveling around the bay. you can see that most are at green. that is great news including the

east shore freeway. it is showing a little more traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is tuesday morning at 5:31. >> correction, it is wednesday morning. >> let's make it through this week. actually we are enjoying a flni little cool down. it will be in the mid-80s. look how much it will heat up over the inland valleys. it is 96 on saturday. get ready for that. we'll have much more comfortable weather as we get ready to clear the shelters. we'll talk about what's going on this weekend and venevents goinn around the bay area. that's coming up in about five minutes. >> all right. thanks. new this morning san jose police are looking for the driver who crashed into a home last flignight and took off run. police say that that red suv you see right there crashed into that parked white car pushing it into a home. this happened on angie avenue in

east san jose. luckily no one in the home was hurt. we do have developing news out of italy. an intense search is underway after yesterday's deadly bridge collapsed. these are live picturesover rescue teams searching for survivors and victims this morning. look what they are up against. we have had new drone footage showing to see if anyone is alive under all of that rubble. so far at least 39 people died in this collapse as rescue efforts continue. officials are worried that death toll will likely rise. the bridge is about two hours south of milan. it connects italy and france. right now people are on summer holiday in italy. not as many people were probably on the road when that bridge gave way. officials say construction was happening to the foundation when the bridge collapsed but they

are still investigating what exactly caused the disaster. 5:33. grape harvesting begins in wine country. vineyards are preparing for what could be a good year. today in the bay is live as harvest grapes are underway this morning. it is a good thing. yeah. good morning to you. their harvest season begins here and often referred to as the crush in this area. we are standing here at the crush path facility. that's part of the process before you get that bottle of wine. they will be picking the first grapes in less than 30 minutes. we'll head over there after this report. they will pick those grapes for sparkling wine. they are the first grapes picked during harvest season then the white wines and then the red wines will be picked later in the harvest season.

from there the grapes are taken to this crush path facility. eventually the fine wine will be bottled up for your consumption. it marks the first season since wild fires hit the area. i want to point it it was minimal when it comes to the wineries. it is according to the napa valley visitor web site. the fires only burned less than 14% and there was no impact between the silverado trail. they burned primarily on the hillside. when it comes to the wineries that were damaged there were only ten that were damaged. no total loss of property for those wineries. 90% of the harvest was completed before the fire. i want to point that out. as i mentioned they will pick the first grapes. we'll head over for next live

report. today in the bay. >> always a fun time of the year. >> yeah. >> thanks, pete. it is 5:35 right now. the spca expected to reopen this morning. the nelson fire fleernearly desd it over the weekend. this footage that we showed you over the week showing the frantic moments as officers and staff race to get the animals out of the building. firefighters actually stationed themselves outside trying to fight off the flames while 60 animals -- look, they had to rush the 60 animals out, dogs, cats, snakes, mice, they were all savered. they spent the past couple of days in temporary foster homes. it charred more than 2,000 acres in fairfield. one home was destroyed. the new school year begins today for students in parkland, florida. you remember the tragedy there earlier this year.

17 shot and killed on valentine's day. this is video of students returning to class. there was supposed to be new metal detectors this year. they sent a letter explaining the plan is now on hold. the superintendent sited logistical issues. it is 5:37 right now. check out how teachers welcomed kids back to school there. the team, the leadership team at martin luther king junior high every year they come up with a theme. this year it is super heros. the leadership team makes up the t-shirts. you can see the heart and paw print there. that's because they are the tigers. we want to tell all of the students returning to school have a great first day heading back to school. >> that's right. we were talking about our mascots.

closing arguments begin today in the trial of president trump's former campaign manager. >> revealing an unusual strategy. >> yeah. the defense rested without presenting a single witness or single bit of evidence. it is unusual but not unheard of defense. they are trying to show the jury it thinks the government's case is so weak it doesn't need to bother. it worked in criminal cases in the past. it was rick gates who testified against his old boss. this is where the defense really actually shined poking holes in the case on cross-examination.

fog. we have drifts of smoke before the south bay air quality will be improving. there will be moderate air qualities. as you make your way out the door expect temperatures in the low 60s. mostly cloudy skies and then the sun breaks out and we'll have clear skies the rest of the day. at noon if you'll be going out later it is 72 degrees and we have the first day of school for some of our kids today. good luck on that first day. pittsburgh will be at 59 degrees walking to school and then maybe if you'll be going outside it will be in the upper 60s. as we go into the afternoon heading home on that first day it will be in the mid-70s. we start out this morning as you

get dressed and looking out the window. you can see all of the clouds. you might want to grab a hat. we'll reach 77 degrees. yes. this is the middle of august and 79 degrees at livermore and 82 in concord and 81 in napa today. brisk winds at 64 degrees. as we go through the forecast the gusty winds carrying in the ocean breeze kind of backs off as high pressure moves in. temperatures will be going up. we go from 84 degrees in the valleys today to 93 on friday and then we reach the peak of our temperatures at 96 degrees. the high pressure, the stagnant air and hot temperatures will continue into the beginning of next week. s san francisco will be in the mid-60s. we'll see it ramp up heading into the weekend and cool off early next week. you have been tracking the

animals. a three-year-old black lab was found wandering the streets of pleasanton they recently visited a summer camp for children who have lost a family member or close friend. it is run by the nonprofit. >> i always see these dogs. they giving as mump as they are receiving. the dogs give love to the kids. it is heartwarming. >> it is really nice to see. not all members are rescues but when a rescue joins the team it is knowing that dog went from unwanted to so loved. >> you can find a list this
