manhattan. a shocking grand jury investigation out of pennsylvania that details the alleged cover-up of decades of abuse at the hands of hundreds of priests in pennsylvania. in a moment, we're going to talk to one of the journalists who helped expose a similar scandal in boston. but first, to ann thompson who has korccovered this issue for long time. good morning to you. >> good morning. this is simply sickening. the horrific details and share number of victims laid out in this report are stunning. a pennsylvania grand jury says hundreds of police molested more than 1,000 children. and that church officials covered it all up for years. the state's attorney general describing it as the weaponzation of faith. the language in this report is graphic, saying bluntly, priests raped children. >> this morning, the sins of the fathers and bishops documenteder for all to see. >> it was child sexual abuse. >> a scathing 900-page grand jury report revealing in no sun

certain terms that at least 300 priests in pennsylvania molested more than 1,000 children since the 1950s. >> we should emphasize that while the lists of priests is long, we don't think we got them all. >> the victims include boys and girls, children and teens, manipulated the grand jury says by predator priests, some using alcohol or pornography to molest, force oral sex and rape, crime tess grand jury says were brushed aside in every part of the state by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all. >> i knew the truth would come out eventually. >> it's vindication for victims like james faluzak, who became a priest even though he says he was abused as a teenager. >> these are wolves in shepparder sheppard's clothing. these people are not protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities. >> i think all of us will have a hole in our soul for the rest of

our lives. julien says when she came forward in 2002 about the priest who molested her as a teen, the church told her they were hiring a private detective. >> it wasn't him they were looking at. >> across the state, xhurchs are asking for forgiveness. >> we are sorry. i am sorry. we all must take this report to heart. >> almost every instance of abuse uncovered is too old to be prosecuted because of the statute of limitations. but prosecutors did prim criminally charge two police whose alleged problems against children happened for a decade. >> they' u.s. bishops are tryin to figure out how to respond.

for the laity and chernlglergy, is a difficult test of faith. >> it's a challenge to my faith. this should never happen. and the church has to reach out to the victims and do whatever it can to help in their healing process. >> now, aside from the church, the grand jury wants the state to take action and eliminate the statute of limitations for these crimes. there's no statute of limitations for murder and these priests murdered my soul, as one victim said. >> and when you hear the details, if you want to look at this report, it is online. it will turn your stomach. we bring in mike who uncovered auto similar pattern of sexual abuse in boston. good morning. >> good morning. >> you look at this and you think, this is pennsylvania, it doesn't even include philadelphia, but it's greater pennsylvania. but the sense is that every

state in america could have a report like this if they looked into it. is that the case? >> i think it's absolutely true. i think if there were an attorney general in every major city in america that wanted to investigate this, they would find pretty much the same thing. the story is the same, whether it's boston or pennsylvania or tucson or los angeles or -- >> or globally. >> ireland, australia, chile, it's the same. the depravity is the same, the y criminality is the same and the cover-up is the same. >> what i found among most sickening details in this is there was a cover-up, almost a playbook that the church hierarchy followed. >> yeah. the grand jury talks about that. they said it had several steps, including first of all, you didn't talk about the specifics of what happened, the crimes, instead you referred to it as horseplay or wrestling. so you diminished it. then when the priests were moveded out of the parish, you didn't tell the parishioners why the priest was gone. he just disappeared. and most of all, they said the

rule was don't go to the police and that enabled this to remain a secret from the parishioners and enabled the church to do what it wanted with those priests. >> i was surprised to see some of the priests went and kind of confessed and you thought at that moment maybe something would be done, but no. >> the other thing i think to keep in mind is that many of these crimes happened in the 50s, 60s and 70s when our understanding of child abuse was much different than it is today. you know, back then, the church treated child abuse almost like alcoholism. we'll send him away for six to eight weeks and he'll be better. now they understand very clearly it is a crime and it must be reported to police. >> mike, let's talk about pope francis. a lot of catholics are -- especially in this country have been feeling really good about this pope. however, is he doing enough with regard to these victims and some of the behavior of the catholic church in terms of a cover-up? >> i think all the survivors

would say emphatically, no, he has not done enough. and this issue has the potential to march francis' legacy forever. he has not come to grips with this issue. 16 years after "the boston globe" spotlight team report, the vatican has done very, very little. a blue ribbon investigation has been issued. in a substantive way, nothing has been done. >> can you believe it? 16 years ago was when you wroter your first story for the boston globe. >> exactly. i think the time is long past as far as the survivors are concerned for the vatican to take some action. >> mike, ann, thank you. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. now turning to that bitter back and forth between president trump and his former white house aide, omarosa, their feud over her time in the administration and her firing show no signs of easing up. kristen welker has the very latest. good morning. >> hi, hoda. good morning to you. this is a war of words raising serious questions about the way this president talks about women and people of color.

with omarosa dangling the possibility of releasing more tapes, the president and his allies are unleashing a full-court press trying to discredit her, but she isn't backing down. >> overnight, omarosa saying there's only one way to shut down president donald trump. >> that is to just don't give him the oxygen and the oxygen comes from the cliques, the likes, the shock. >> it comes after the president referred to his former apprentice as a dog earlier in the day. team trump not backing down. >> would it be appropriate for me to call a woman a dog? yes or no? >> it depends on what she did to you, ed. >> it depends? >> it depends on what she did to you. omarosa bit the hand that fed her. to me, that's what dog is. >> this has absolutely nothing to do with race and everything to do with the president calling out someone's lack of integrity. >> the backlash as managault-newman claims she

anything that he needs. >> adding that candidate trump absolutely knew about the e-mails stolen from the clinton campaign before they were released by wikileaks, but declined to give any details. >> i am going to expose the corruption that went on in the campaign and in the white house. i'm going to continue to blow the whistle on all of this. >> overnight, the president's attorney insisting mr. trump had no prior knowledge of the wikileaks e-mail dump. >> you know she's lying. >> i know she's lying because i was on the campaign more than she was. >> and now president trump's campaign is moving to shut down omarosa claiming it's taking legal action against her for alleged allegedly violating a nondisclosure agreement she signed during the campaign. when asked about that move, omarosa says she doesn't believe she broke the agreement and then accused the president of trying to see lens -- silence her. breaking overnight, the death toll is rising from the

collapse of a highway bridge in italy and the moment was caught on camera. today, crews are looking for possible survivors and there's a major investigation under way. kerry sanders is in genoa this morning. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. a horrific catastrophe here. the death toll now stands at 39. 16 victims are in the hospital. 12 of them are in critical condition. right now, there were teams down in the rubble there searching for possible survivors. when the bridge gave away, folks who were on it fell 15 stories down below. and over to the side there, what -- under what remains of the still standing bridge, those are apartment buildings, 400 residents evacuated as that dangling span of the bridge there slipped overnight, shifting downwards another 3 inches. dawn bringing no relief for rescuers who have been working through the night. franticly searching for survivors digging through the rubble, crawling into tight

spaces. dogs helping search for survivors, fearing further collapse. they are unable to use heavy equipment to lift the tons of concrete. here, a small digger at work. overnight, these images taken by drones overhead showing what they're up against. searching tons of twisted steel and crushed cars for anyone for anyone left alive, but finding few. this lucky survivor went down from the bridge. another brought down. >> i can't find her. >> oh, god, oh, god a man cries a day earlier as he watched the highway bridge collapse. an apocalyptic scene. weapon traveled bridge tumbling down during a thunderstorm. bridge connecting a major, major highway collapsing on a industrial area below. this truck close to the edge, but safe. dozens killed in the collapse. the death toll rising again overnight. witness sylvia was there and watched it all unfold.

fear the victims, may be children. some as young as nine years old. savannah, hoda. there are new twists in disturbing case of child abuse at desert compound in new mexico. part of it now mysteriously destroyed by authorities. judge granted bail to most of the suspects is now getting death threats. been on the story from the very beginning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. completely different scene out here at the compound. you member this was the front area. looks like investigators at some point yesterday came in with a backhoe or possibly a bulldozer and plowed their way down in this area. hooked up a trailer, pulled it out and over hereperty owneroue. wondering why investigators were so destructive. >> this morning, new images of remote new mexico compound now raised to the ground.

property owner jason badger says court order allowing the seizure of stolen trailer, but tells nbc news he was surprised to find the compound which he believed still could have contained critical evidence knocked down. underground tunnels covered over. three of five suspects accused of abusing children expected to be released from jail. have to wear tracking monitors and stay in the county and only avow allowed to visit children under state suspiciopervision. the judge who released them received death threats. some of the community who agree with the ruling say they're concerned. >> i think the judge did what she was supposed to do. she followed the law by the book, but it's still scary that these guys are out. >> a spokesperson for the court saying in a statement, a judge's responsibility is to follow the law, not popular sentiment that may develop from incomplete or misleading information.

didn't provide evidence to support accusations of school shooting plot or about allegations the 11 which i sh 1 found at the compound were being mistreated or malnourished. >> i didn't hear anything about the condition of the children. >> three subjects allowed to bond out with only signatures. one suspect turned over to ice and one will remain on warrant from georgia. accused of abducting son eight months ago. apparently died at the compound in new mexico after what an fbi agent called attempted ritual involving the quran. refusing to comment on the investigation or the ruling. >> how are they allowed to leave jail. >> so perplexing. you just reported some of the compound has been destroyed now. i just don't understand what's happening with if investigation. wasn't the fbi involved as well? what are they saying. >> it's been impossible to get a straight answer because investigators just won't talk to us. what we do know is that last week, a lot of the same stuff we

be strong storms again into that same area. then into illinois, indiana, pushing heavy rains from arkansas, missouri, oklahoma, continuing on to the east. we have a risk of flooding. a strong risk of flooding possible through parts of northwestern arkansas. all the way into indianapolis. saturated ground, mountainous areas, prone to flooding. eventually though these aren't huge amounts of rain, some areas could see six inches. 1-3 inches on already saturated ground could cause major flooding. we'll get to your local forecast coming up in next 30 seconds. not so cute when they're angry. and we covered it. talk to farmers. we know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.

it's a 900-page report. it says senior church officials systematically covered up that abuse and says the real number of abuse children could be in the thousands since some secret church records were lost and pane victims were afraid to come forward. almost every instance of abuse where victims come forward is t old due to statute of limitation. >> vermont democrats nominated the first transgender candidate for governor. in minnesota omar won in the district. if she won, she would the first somali. national teacher of the year could become the first black woman of the state to serve in congress. closing arguments under way in the trial of former trump campaign chairman paul manafort. manafort's legal team rested

tuesday without putting their client on the stand or calling any witnesses. he's been accused of tax and bank fraud as well as foreign bank accounts. he's pleaded not guilty to all charges. after closing arguments this morning, the case will go to the jury. now to a growing scandal rocking a major university and its football program on the eve of the new season. >> months after a university of maryland player died after collapsing from heat stroke on the practice field, the school is accepting full, quote, moral and legal responsibility. officials now admitting mistakes were made that could have saved that teenager's life. there are disturbing allegations this morning that players there were regularly mistreated. nbc's tom costello on the story. he's on the college park campus for us. hi, tom, good morning. >> good morning. those allegations started in an espn investigation alleging really a toxic environment of abuse and bullying and that teenager player who died after allegedly not getting the medical care that might have saved his life on the field, now the head coach is suspended,

another coach has quit and the university has called in outside investigators. back on the practice field at the university of maryland, a football team in crisis. the university president says the team accepts full legal and moral responsibility for the death of one of their own. >> i said to the family, the university owes you an apology. you entrusted jordan to our c e care, and he is never returning home again. >> 19-year-old jordan mcnair was an offensive lineman who collapsed in sweltering heat during practice may 29th. the university staff failed to check his vitals, failed thomas use cold water immersion treatment and failed to follow protocols. mcnair's temperature was 106 when he was eventually taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he died two weeks later.

in june head coach dj durkin addressed the media. >> my heart is broken. >> but on saturday espn reported allegations that durkin's coach staff regularly verbally and physically abused their players, humiliating one player after he passed out, forcing players to overseat to the point of vomiting, even throwing weights at players. now coach durkin is suspended. strength and conditioning per share coach has resigned saying, the gravity of the situation has deeply impacted my perspective on the why i'm coaching. meanwhile the university has launched appear investigation with outside experts. >> make no mistake, we will not tolerate any behavior from any employee within maryland athletics that is detrimental to the mental or physical well-being of our student athletes. >> for mcnair's family, heartache and anger. >> university of maryland killed

we showed you that video of a teenager being shoved off a 60-foot bridge in ohio state. she did survive. she did suffer serious injuries. now police are publicly identifying the person who pushed her. here is nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: in what appears to be a moment of teenager impulsiveness. >> ready? >> 18-year-old taylor smith doing the unthinkable. authorities say she pushed her friend, jordan holgersen off this this 60-foot high bridge. they have completed the investigation and said the suspect has been cooperating with investigators. the case will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for appropriate charging. the moulton falls bridge in washington state is a popular recreational area. despite a sign posted that says no jumping, many come here to do just that. holgersen would not say if she

intended to jump but the push threw her off balance. she fell awkwardly, essentially doing a belly flop from six stories up. she suffered broken ribs, internal injuries, bruises and cuts and most worrisome, a mass behind her windpipe. >> i could have died easily, but i didn't. >> trauma surgeon are says when a fall is three times a person's height, there's a 50% chance she will die. holgersen's drop was much higher. >> when you're falling that high from that height, it's like hitting concrete. >> she has stayed home because of threats via phone and texts she tells nbc news, she feels really bad about what happened and she's apologized several times from jordan. jordan confirms she has received a texted apology. she's now at home recovering but says she's still having a hard time breathing following that

he was struggling to find the correct nick young. at the time i was presenting, doing travel shows and everything. so they reached out. because i was a presenter, i was like, no, no, no, i won't read for it. i'm staying in my lane. i had this mental block. but he reached out, he's a very convincing human being and a wonderful one at that. yeah, the rest is history. >> awkwafina, you and ken are nuts. who cracked each other up more between the two of you? >> equal. it was equal. >> she plays your daughter. how do you describe her in the film? >> i describe her as like comedic kinship. i really do. i think john chu just cast us wonderfully as father daughter. we had a shorthand that we didn't even have to explain on set. >> i love how you called her in the movie the asian ellen because you had blonde hair. >> really good.

the solano county s-p-c-a is good morning. 8:56. i'm marcus washington. the solano county spca is expected to reopen this morning. after a fire nearly destroyed it over the weekend. this is body cam footage we showed earlier this week it shows a frantic moment of officers trying to get the animals outside of the building.

60 animals were rushed out. dogs, cats, snakes, mice, were all saved. and taken to a temporary foster home. the fire charred more than 2,000 acres. happening now, firefighters are making great progress to get 11 wildfires burning in the state. the river fire which is part of the mendocino complex fire is now 100 contained. the red fire makes up the other half of that fire. the fires have destroyed more than 350,000 acres. up in shasta county the fight against the carr fire continues. it's now 70% contained. the fire which has been burning three weeks has now destroyed more than 5,000 homes. more news coming up for you in an hour. ♪ ♪
