"early today" starts right now. >> good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> i'm phillip mena. we learned the husband of the pregnant mom and two daughters is in custody. the 3 and 4-year-old vanished from their home in denver. the brother shared this post on facebook stating, he killed my pregnant sister and my two nieces. her disappearance prompted a statewide emergency alert. >> i was trying to get home as nafta as i can. i wasi was gng everything trying to get home as fast as i can because none of this made sense. >> police are trying to get answers to the questions everyone now wants to know. authorities have not released any new evidence to the public after searching in and around the family home with dogs. but police have scheduled a news conference or 10:30 this morning to provide updates on this pregnant mother and her children. >> in an unprecedented move,

president trump has security clearance for former cia chief john brennan, a vocal trump critic. secretary sanrs making the announcement accusing brennan of erratic behavior and abusing his access without offering evidence. louisiana senator john kennedy defended the move saying, americans expect intelligence experts to be above politics. >> mr. brennan has demonstrated that that's not the case. he's been totally political. i think i called him a butt head and i meant it. >> and brennan is not the only one who may lose his clearance with the president offering a lengthy list of officials under review. for more let's go to nbc's susan mcennis in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: hi, marlie, good morning. others were told their security clearances could be yanked as administration, and that is significant. brennan fired back calling this

an effort to suppress free speech and punish the president's critics. >> i do believe that mr. trump decided to take this action. as he's done with others to try to intimidate and suppress any criticism of him or his administration. and revoking my security clearances is his way of trying to get back at me. and this is not going to deter me at all. i'm going to continue to speak out. i think he fears individuals who could damage him, damage t amer people. >> reporter: many other career national intelligence owe firnlz are on this list. just to name a few, james clapper former director of national intelligence, james comey former fbi director clashed with the president many times. sally yates former acting attorney general and many, many others. all of them having served democratic administration tz, all of them critical of the trump white house.

also we have the president in an interview with the "wall street journal" seemingly drawing a straight line between the yanking of this security clearance and the warning of the others and the russia investigation. the president saying, i call it the rigged witch hunt. it's a sham. these people let it. something had to be done. marlie? >> susan, thank you. >> hundreds of newspapers across the country firing back against president trump's attacks against the press. as many as 350 papers are answering a call to action by the boston globe according to its op-ed editor, all running staff editorials today denouncing those attacks. the globe editorial staff writing, to label the press the enemy of the people is as unamerican as it isngers. "the new york times" writes, criticizing the news media is entirely right, but insisting the truths you don't like are fake news is dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy. it is not just the big names either here. local papers are also joining in. north carolina's fayetteville observer writes, last we checked, we are the people.

nt in genoa, italy. this has left at least 39 people dead. the interior minister has declined to say how many people may still be trapped underneath the jagged concrete and twisted steel debris. the investigation into the cause of the collapse is now focusing on possible design flaws in the 51-year-old bridge as well as past maintenance. nbc's lieu see kafanov joining us from genoa. good morning. >> reporter: hey there, good morning. this is still officially a search and rescue operation, although obviously the hopes of thdeath toll has been revised firefighters say there is roughly 30 cars on that bridge when it collapsed and so the damage was so great that they haven't actually been able to figure out exactly how many vehicles, trucks and cars they've recovered. they've been able to pull out

bits and pieces. this has been a painstaking operation. they have been using sniffer dogs, heavy equipment, you can probably see the cranes and the machinery behind me, drilling through some of the bits of concrete trying to cut through the steel to get to any of the cars and any of the potential people trapped beneath. we do understand that some of the funeral, a state funeral is being planned for saturday for some of the victims. there have been several foreign nationals, some french young people among the victims as well as italians. two families including a family of three, the youngest victim 8-year-old boy, guys. >> lucy on the scene there. thank you. >> a frightening scene in connecticut where city officials say at least 76 people have fallen ill from suspected drug overdoses. first responders arrived at a park near yale university to find dozens of people of a variety of ages screaming and dropping to the ground as emergency crewsthem. so far no fatalities have been reported.

authorities suspect a mass overdose is linked to k-2 synthetic marijuana and have arrested at least one local man believed to be connected to the incident. nbc's ron allen has the latest. >> reporter: a massive emergency response in a city park, frantic efforts to save lives. police say dozens of victims overdosing on what authorities suspect is a synthetic street drug called k-2, or synthetic marijuana. people blacking out. panicking. this man fled when paramedics arrived. at least 40 victims taken to hospital in less than 24 hours. some in critical condition. >> there were some that were lethargic, some in respiratory duress. >> reporter: at one point a press conference interrupted by an emergency call. >> we're getting another call of a person. >> reporter: authorities say the outbreak struck first near the city's main green, then spread across new haven. police telling us they have a suspect in custody. >> i believe he may have been trying to give this out as
