5:00 am
breaking news out of nashville, a very good morning to you on this now thursday morning, as we take a live look outside. looks like the commute is moving along there. we're getting word of major delays coming up on b.a.r.t. we'll check in with mike in a moment. he joins us on set. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us on this thursday morning. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we have been talking about this, the warmup happening. we'll feel that today. >> we'll start to feel it, but today will be the start of it so it's not going to be extremely
5:01 am
hot, unbearable, unless you're further inland and you don't like the 90s. aside from that, temperatures on the side of comfortable. 58 degrees for san francisco. concord at about 62 degrees and san jose, 62 degrees. believe it or not, eventually by the afternoon, some spots will warm up by as much as 25, 30 degrees this afternoon. expect plenty of sunshine into tonight. i'm also tracking that air quality because we still have active wildfires burning. i'll bring you an update on how that's doing, but mike is tracking major delays for b.a.r.t. >> that's right. we have a system wide delay now, just updated from the b.a.r.t. alert system. we're looking at a major delay which is categorized at anything over 20 minutes. we have been tracking the delay which is right around the area where the b.a.r.t. maintenance yard is. i don't know if the two are linked but there's now a system wide delay reported from b.a.r.t. ac transit not reporting any delays. so we'll track that.
5:02 am
if you have your ac transit pass, make sure you exercise that as a possible option to get around delays for the b.a.r.t. system. meanwhile, the roadways for the drive, if you want to carpool with someone, that's an option out of the b.a.r.t. parking lot. we're looking at a huge ride, and all around the bay, speed sensors are not showing major problems. update on this crash. coming over here, westbound 580 at central. only the off-ramp which is blocked by two semis or partially blocked by two semis that got into a crash. getting to the richmond-san rafael bridge is not a problem. the freeway is completely open. >> we'll keep checking back with you. thank you. 5:02 right now. now to a developing story. a warning to anyone getting into a ride share this morning. make sure that you're in the right car. >> yeah, that's because san mateo police are looking for a suspect who pretended to be a ride share driver and then sexually assaulted a passenger. pete suratos is live in san mateo off highway 92. this is near where this
5:03 am
happened. and pete, what details have you been able to find out about the suspect? >> yeah, well, marcus, at this point, we know the suspect picked up the victim near highway 92 behind me. the specific location of where that pickup took place is still unknown because the details are still limited as this is still an ongoing investigation by san mateo police. but they are releasing a sketch of the suspect. we'll show that to our viewers so you can get a good look at the man they're trying to track down. san mateo police say this man picked up the victim on tuesday night, posing as a ride share driver. now, he then drove this woman to a secluded location where he sexually assaulted her. police say the victim was able to escape. a passer-by driving by in the area near the 1400 block saw her, helped her, and called 911. >> something of this nature that is this egregious is always very troubling. outside the norm, and it really shocks the conscience.
5:04 am
for us, we take these very seriously. we have had obviously investigators working around the clock. >> once again, you're taking a look at a sketch of the suspect. he's still on the loose, described as a tall white man in his 30s with a slender build. san mateo police want to take time to remind folks to make sure the car you're getting into matches the information of the car you're requesting on your app. if you have information to help out with the case, contact san mateo police. pete suratos for today in the bay. >> good time to tell people you can ask the driver who are you here to pick up, have them say your name. >> look at their license plate. everything. we're hearing more and more cases of this. thank you. at 5:04 this morning, the sacramento area man accused of driving recklessly and killing a chp officer is expected in court today. officer kirk greece was killed yesterday. he had killed a drive over on the shoulder of interstate 80 when both were struck by the
5:05 am
suspect's pickup truck. here's the chp commander. >> it was a combination of reckless driving and distracted driving that took the lives of officer grist and mr. manuel. >> jamie manuel was the driver who was pulled over. investigators say the 36-year-old sean walker was speeding and distracted by his phone when he crashed. well, terrifying video to show you this morning. it shows a natural phenomenon calls a fire whirl. this erupted in the early stages of the carr fire in redding. cal fire just releasing this video. officials state that the fiery vortex was the size of three football fields with winds up to 140 miles per hour. that carr fire broke out on july 26th. so far, more than 200,000 acres have burned. full containment isn't expected until next month. and a final ride home for a fallen firefighter who was killed while battling the mendocino complex fire. the body of battalion chief
5:06 am
matthew arrived ipsalt lake city last night after flying home from sonoma county airport. governor brown honored him as one of many heroes who come out of the state to help fight the california wildfires. he leaves behind a wife and 6-year-old son. it's 5:06. the political world in turmoil again. we're learning this morning the president revoked security clearance of a former cia official, john brennan's security clearance was yanked yesterday. this is the first time a president has done this. in an interview with "wall street journal," trump said brennan was among those responsible for the russia investigation, saying, quote, these people led to it, so i think it's something that had to be done. here's what the white house said about brennan yesterday. >> mr. brennan has a history that calls into question his objectivity and credibility. to make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations, wild outbursts on the internet and television about this
5:07 am
administration. >> i've seen this type of behavior and actions on the part of foreign tyrants and despots and autocrates for many years in my cia and national security career. i never thought i would see it here in the united states. >> you just heard from director brennan there. he's been a vocal critic of trump. the white house also considering revoking other former government official security clearances. >> happening today, we here at nbc bay area stand by many news organizations across the media. boston globe organizing freedom of the press day. more than 300 papers are running editorials promoting press freedom in a movement to counter mr. trump's attacks on the media. here in the bay area, many organizations are among those taking part. >> as the saying goes, the music plays on. unfortunately, not always the case for mom and pop stores that really allow us to create that music. today in the bay's bob redell is
5:08 am
in lafayette to explain. >> remarkably, this still works. wonderfully. what's not working, the business model that kept calculating sales all these years. >> i still really haven't had time to process it. >> the store has decided to call it quits. a store that joe founded 71 years ago. >> mom and popstories are going that way, unfortunately. >> the writing has been on the wall in spite of what the writing on the wall indicates. >> i don't really know if there's anything that's going to replace the feel of a place like this. >> it used to be the bay area's largest seller of sheet music. but online retailers like amazon and big stores like the guitar center killed business by 50% over the past decade. >> i don't know. i'm old enough that i like going in and seeing people face-to-face when i do my
5:09 am
shopping. so i understand the world uses amazon. i don't. >> and in light of the after school program, fewer kids have been renting musical instruments. >> i wish people would reach out and support the local businesses because once they're gone, they're gone. it's going to be all big corporations. and i don't think anyone is going to be happy if that happens. >> he is singing from the mountaintops. it seems only a few people are listening. >> i just wish they could stay because i love music. >> in lafayette, bob redell, today in the bay. it's always so important to go and support your local businesses, even your local farmer's market, always a great idea. it will be a great day for that and so will this weekend. 5:09. you can see we don't have a lot of cloud cover over san jose, and it's showcasing itself as a sunny thursday. by 12:00, 75 degrees. still in the 60s. by 2:00, 80 degrees.
5:10 am
we are expecting a nice ridge of high pressure sitting over the desert southwest right now, going to make its way to california and that's really going to bring a nice warmup, especially into tomorrow and into saturday. as far as your concord temperatures go, this will be one of the hotter spots for today. temperatures expected to climb into the 90s. no triple digits yet, but if you notice by the icons, plenty of sunshine and not a lot of cloud cover. if you're hanging out by the coast of the bay, expect areas of patchy low clouds at times and a bit of fog that will burn off by midmorning. let's get a check of traffic with mike. what's going on with b.a.r.t.? >> still have delays. got more info. two sources of problem. one is an equipment problem in downtown oakland. the bigger problem is a track repair they have to do between bayfair and hayward, the earlier track issue demanding emergency repair work. that will be a midger delay reported for the entire system. meanwhile, ac transit, no word on them, sometimes they honor b.a.r.t. passes when we have a
5:11 am
problem that is system wide. but on the roadways, you're okay for those local roadways. highways are moving at speed. a little build at the bay bridge, and we expect that to be with the metering lights. all moving smoothly. >> how much time do you have? coming up next on today in the bay, how long would it take to watch everything new on netflix. the shocking answer scientists came up with next. all right, i'll tune in for that, plus uber urged to tap the brakes on one of its biggest project. >> and later, saving kids. the alarming link between child drowning and distracted parents. this is not a bed.
5:12 am
it's a revolution in sleep. the new sleep number 360 smart bed
5:13 am
is on sale now, from $899, during sleep number's 'biggest sale of the year'. it senses your movement, and automatically adjusts to keep you both comfortable. it even helps with this. so you wake up ready to put your pedal to the metal. and now, all beds are on sale. save 50% on the new sleep number 360 limited edition smart bed. plus 24-month financing on all beds. only for a limited time. sleep number. proven, quality sleep.
5:14 am
good morning. it's 5:14. you may need a very light sweater on your way out, at least if you're along the coast and bay. we see a couple low clouds here and there. not a huge difference in terms of morning temperatures. about 3 degrees cooler in san francisco, but you'll notice the warmup as we head into the afternoon. i'll break it down for you coming up. >> roadways are great. this is a clear shot of the approach to the richmond-san rafael bridge to the east bay. we have a problem on the b.a.r.t. track and with the b.a.r.t. track. that's causing a major delay system wide. we're talking about what your options are in the area. good morning. happy thursday to you. san jose's largest private
5:15 am
employer cisco systems made its report to investors last night. very positive report. you can expect green arrows there. interesting news on amazon. there are reports amazon wants to buy the landmark movie theater chain. landmark owns a handful of bay area theaters including one in berkeley, aquarius in palo alto. this is a another case of maybe amazon getting into brick and mortar. >> uber under pressure to stop its self-driving car program. uber has suspended its self-driving effort and has fallen badly behind google. >> the white house says it will restart trade talks with china. this is big news because we have not been talking to china at all. it's also worth noting that for all the trade tariffs and all the trade negotiations and all the trade talks, washington has not made a single major trade agreement with any country. the talks will take place later this month.
5:16 am
the "wall street journal" reports the securities and exchange commission has served tesla with a subpoena, looking into what caused its ceo to declare the company had secured funding for tesla to go private. musk startled investors on august 7th when he tweeted that he had the money to buy up all the outstanding shares of tesla for $420 a share. we later learned he had been talking to the saudis about getting that money but hadn't actually secured it. you have to be super careful when you're a board member or ceo and talking about finance. you have to eboo accurate and make sure everybody gets that information at the same time. i think we can say musk didn't do that. >> exactly. thank you. new this morning, forget spacex or the hyperloop. speaking of musk, his latest idea strictly inside baseball. the boring company is proposing a new ling between dodges stadium and one of several underground l.a. metro stations.
5:17 am
a zero mission underground loop to and from downtown. total trip time, four minutes. if you have been to dodgers stadium to see the giants, you know most everyone drives and the dodgers look at the pitch and love it. takes a long time to get in and out of dodgers stadium. i sat there for a while. >> hey, if you stayed up late to watch the end of the giants/dodgers game last night at dodgers stadium, maybe you're a little blue. >> that's because the giants couldn't hold on after an exciting comeback, andrew mccutchen's three run homer in the eighth inning tied the game, but in the 12th, the dodgers won an a sacrifice fly. final score, 4-3, capped an all around off day for the bay area baseball scene. the a's actually lost to seattle earlier. also in the 12th inning. okay, so what are you doing for the next eight months? well, if you're free, then we have the right thing for you to kill time. you could watch everything on
5:18 am
netflix, believe it or not, british scientists who clearly have way too much time on their hands, figured out that it would take eight months to watch everything new uploaded onto netflix last year. that's 3,274 hours of content, and if you take time out for eating and sleeping, bathing breaks, you'll need to watch 14 hours a day for 237 days. >> well, you could sleep and take eating breaks while you're watching netflix. everybody does that. >> that's what usually happens. i'll start something and fall asleep. not going to happen in my household. >> eight months. hmm. >> you don't need to worry about watching that. >> go outside, guys. it's okay to watch tv, watch us, but you don't need to watch eight month of netflix. i love netflix, but go outside. 62 degrees in san jose. wind speeds at about 7 miles per hour. we're not really seeing too much
5:19 am
cloud cover, but along the coast, don't be surprised if you see the fog. you'll see that rolling in. san francisco right now at about 57 degrees. now, we have been kind of waking up to cool temperatures and even into the afternoon, we have noticed cooler temperatures and some breezy conditions as well. the san jose area, downtown, definitely on the side of breezy. 58 with more wind speeds, nice and calm. as we head into the afternoon, our biggest change is going to be thanks to a ridge of high pressure. what does that mean for us in the bay area? today, it's going to start setting us up for a warming of 20-plus degrees in some spots compared to what we have seen the past week. temperatures will climb into the 70s for cupertino. san jose, 83 degrees. milpitas at 82. and some of the warmer spots will be in the east bay. not so much for oakland. oakland will be 73 degrees, but check out concord, about 90 degrees. along the peninsula, also expect to see breezy conditions with temperatures in the 70s.
5:20 am
in the city, 69 for mission. the embarcadero at 66. and if you're heading to the north bay, temperatures expected to climb to the 80s. enjoy the 80s because by the weekend, we're talking about 90s in the forecast. mid 90s. what does this mean for your air quality? there are no spare the air alerts in effect, but because we still have these active wildfires burning near, you still want to look out for smoke from the north bay and east bay with a little haze for the peninsula and south bay. expect on and off smoke to stick around, at least until the fires are actively put out. you may need to limit that outdoor activity. keep that in mind if you're going to be outside today, taking your dog out for a walk. if not, hey, maybe get a new pup this weekend with our major clear the shelters event. i know mike knows all about that. >> i do. i do. temptations all around at the puppy shelters and cat shelters and bird shelters and reptiles. >> we're looking at the b.a.r.t. station. right now, it doesn't shelter you from delays.
5:21 am
b.a.r.t. is the big problem for the delays because the roadways are moving smoothly. rippling around the system, system-wide delays reported because of an equipment problem between bayfair and hayward. there's also another issue, one train having a problem in downtown oakland. system wide delays reported for the b.a.r.t. system. you can take to the roadways because traffic is still relatively light in the east bay. coming up through contra costa county, no problems on the highways as an alternate. the bay bridge toll plaza should start to back up any second now. sometimes ac transit gives mutual aid. but right now, stick to your alternate plan. coming up, how safe is your suv? >> the safety cage around the right front passenger started to fall apart.
5:22 am
we'll tell you about a new crash safety report just out this morning. many families - going te
5:23 am
5:24 am
pool. but new this morning: it turns out many parents - who welcome back. many families heading out to the pool, but new this morning, it turns out many parents who should be watching their kids in water are distracted by their phone. there's a link between drowning and smartphones. >> it is important for parents
5:25 am
to have a cell phone at the playground or at the pool in case of emergency, but just like having a magazine or a book or a phone, put the distractions away and enjoy your time at the pool with your child. >> the german lifeguard association which is the world's largest is issuing a warning about phone distractions after 300 drownings so far this year in germany. other countries are putting out that same warning. >> also new for you this morning, you want to hear about this before you take the kids to school. new tests on three of the most popular minivans show potential weakness when it comes to one specific type of crash. the insurance institute for highway safety crash tested front passenger side for the newest honda odyssey, pacifica, and sonata. toyota received marginal ratings overall and a poor rating for structure. the chrysler earned a marginal rating for structure with an acceptable rating for protection. the honda fared best, but only
5:26 am
scored acceptable on structure. >> we would ideally like to see all vehicles rating good overall, but those that rate acceptable don't have too many problems. >> now, toyota issued a statement for its poor rating, in part calling this a severe, specialized test that goes beyond federal vehicle safety requirements. toyota also says that it's taking steps to improve its vehicle response. >> san franciscans get a first look at plans to increase safety on another busy street south of market. hosting an open house on the folsom street project. these show some of the changes you'll see through 2022. in the short term, crews are adding safer bike lanes between 5th and 11th street. folsom park wraps up at the start of the year. >> 5:26 right now. >> yeah, coming up here on today in the bay, breaking traffic
5:27 am
news. a massive b.a.r.t. delay you need to know about before heading out the door. >> plus a health warning to parents as the school year begins. measles outbreak sweeping the nation and california right now. >> and keeping migrant children safe. the action congress is expected to take to make sure that they're properly cared for. goodu

for joining us. i )m laura garcia. good morning and thank you for joining us. i )m laura garcia. a very good thursday morning to you.
5:30 am
thanks so much for joining us for today in the bay. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. right now, we want to go to traffic. we have breaking news causing the b.a.r.t. delays. >> a little more detail from b.a.r.t. so far, the headline is a system wide delay reported by b.a.r.t. major delay. anything over 20 minutes. the reason, though, is single tracking trains. there's a track problem there between bayfair and hayward, so they're only able to use one set of tracks. that means they have to take turns passing by like through a traffic controlled construction zone. that's the reason for the delay. very important because most of our lines travel through that portion of the east bay. also something on the track outside of downtown oakland, right outside the tunnel, so both of those issues right now. this could result in more traffic heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza as some folks avoid b.a.r.t. and take to their cars. we see the backup forming, pretty standard backup pattern and timing for a thursday. we'll track that, but so far the
5:31 am
freeways are moving nicely. a smooth flow of traffic. vianey, all the way to the south bay, a clear drive. how is the forecast? >> clear drive and clear skies for the south bay. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. very typical for this time of the year. no major changes for the start of our thursday. 62 degrees right now in san jose. hayward, 63. san francisco, 58. those changes will come later in the morning and the afternoon. let's take a look at your morning commute for concord. this is one of our warmer spots today. 90s topping out into the midafternoon, by 11:00 a.m., temperatures will climb to 71 degrees. by your lunch hour as you're heading out to grab a bite to eat, 75 degrees. i'll show you some of the other hot spots in a bit. >> thank you. 5:31 right now. new this morning, a health warning to parents taking their kids to school this morning. a measles outbreak is sweeping the nation and california. there's already been more than 100 cases just this year.
5:32 am
today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live with a look at some of the local numbers this morning and how we can try to keep our kids healthy. good morning, kris. >> well, hi there, laura. sometimes it feels like it's an uphill battle, but what we know about the mieasles outbreak is the people who contracted it were not vaccinated. and california state law requires all public school children be vaccinated against the measles virus. now, this is a website where you can check the vaccination rate for your kid's school. i punched in san jose as an example for you. you can see mostly green dots. the yellow and red dots are charter schools. i'm going to post a link to this site on my twitter feed and on my facebook page, so you can check your own neighborhood schools where your kids attend. so the good news is that the risk is lower for public school children, but you could be at risk, particularly if you travel
5:33 am
for work or for fun. according to the cdc, between january and july of this year, 107 people got measles here in california, and in 20 other states plus washington, d.c. a lot of these states are our neighbors where many of us travel during the summertime. symptoms include high fever, particularly a spike. also a cough and a rash. sometimes something that also looks like pink eye. in severe cases, measles can lead to brain damage and even death. i'm putting this up on our social feeds as well. measles is highly contagious. that can live in the air for up to two hours after a person leaves. and a person who has measles can be contagious if four days before they show symptoms and for four days after that tell tale rash shows up. this is definitely a concern, but definitely you can check and see what your risk is and kind of adjust your life accordingly. in san jose, kris sanchez, today
5:34 am
in the bay. >> that mmr vaccine, what they're needing. thanks so much. 5:33 right now. happening today, the care of migrant children takes center stage on capitol hill. senators are holding hearings on the issue. this comes after senate investigators found the government is not checking up on migrant kids after they are released from its custody. the number of minors separated from their families has increased under the trump administration. >> a live look at genoa, italy, this morning. the site of this week's deadly bridge collapse. developing this morning, italian authorities say as many as 20 people are still missing. sadly, 39 people confirmed dead. italy declared a state of emergency following tuesday's collapse. rescue teams remain hopeful, however, that there are still survivors possibly trapped in that rubble. one woman says she was below the bridge nearby in her car when it just collapsed in front of her.
5:35 am
>> silence. gas, smell of gas. smell of steel. full of death. terrible. >> investigators are now looking closer at the bridge decline and maintenance records. they're also hoping to get accounts from the 16 people who were on the bridge but survived the plunge. 5:35. a new twist in the ghostship warehouse fire. the attorney for max harris, one of the defendants, planned on filing a motion to split his case from co-defendant derrick almena. last friday, the judge in the case rejected a plea deal for the two men. the skruj says almena was not remorseful enough. as part of the proposed beal, almena would have received a nine-year jail sentence while harris got six years. harris' attorney says the judge's decision told him that case should be dealt with separately. a terrifying story in california. federal agents in sacramento arrested a man suspected of being a member of isis. omar ameen is accused of killing

oe osha records, whether we're verifying the information. >> that was the supervisor's spokesperson on whether the city digs deeper into information provided by contractors on procurement questionnaires. we've also reached out to schmidt construction, but the company has no comment. >> at 5:37, if you commute from east palo alto to pinata college. we have good news for you. there's a free shuttle to take you to the redwood city community college. palo alto reporting it's a pilot program for students and employees. it was certainly a hit yesterday. there were said to be so many riders, backup shuttles had to be called in. unfortunately, you can't do that sort of thing on the b.a.r.t. system because it's on the tracks. there's our major delay because of a problem with the tracks. over here, this may result in more cars. the whole area filling in at the bay bridge. i think there may be more folks taking to the roads with their
5:38 am
cars because of the major delays reported, the problem on the tracks with the tracks in oakland between bayfair and hayward, single tracks there and that's causing an issue because it's a critical section for most of our lines. also some debris that we see out of the san francisco line around the 16th street. so that's a second issue. again, the big issue is the track between hayward and bayfair. we're looking at the roadways. a lot of folks can get to the bay bridge. you saw the backup there. and an easy drive because it's thursday and a lot of parents are there because a lot of schools are online. >> my kids are starting today. >> you start on a thursday, a short week. >> eases into it. >> kids can get excited about the weekend. >> even though i know a couple kids, it's their first day of school. santa clara unified and i know those kids are taking cute little school pictures. i can't wait to see them. share them with us. we'll enjoy them. >> i'll take some later today

5:40 am
i'm sad about because i have seen amazing photos but saturday and sunday are the days to visit. 84 degrees expected. clear skies on friday for tomorrow. also expecting 80s thanks to the ridge of high pressure. we're tracking a beautiful weekend ahead with plenty of outdoor activities in store for the families especially because the kids will want to look forward to the weekend after the first day. i wish all the kids good luck. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. >> 5:40 right now. coming up next on today in the bay, cannabis bringing in the green. the new numbers out this morning showing just how much marijuana is selling across our golden state. >> and the press this morning responds to the president's attacks on the press. we'll take a look when today in the bay continues.
