20th, 2018. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." nice to have you with us nice and early on a monday morning. that grand jury report out of pennsylvania had shocking allegations. just when you thought you heard it all in the catholic abuse scandal. >> people have been waiting for the pope and finally the day came today. >> just a few moments ago, it's our breaking news, top story, the pope issuing a letter to 2 billion catholics and apologizing for the crime of sex abuse by priests in the wake of scathing grand jury report i just mentioned. nbc's ann thompson has been covering this story really for too long, anne, but this is a remarkable statement. >> it is. it was prompted by that grand jury report out of pennsylvania.
7:03 am
it is an extraordinary mea cull pa from pope francis in this letter to the people of god, he acknowledges the pain of the victims saying it never goes away and saying that for too long the church ignored and kept quiet or silenced the heart wrenching pain of these victims. he also goes after the church's actions in this scandal. he says with shame and repentance we acknowledge as a ecclesiastical community, we the church leadership, that we were not where we should have been. we did not act in a timely manner realizing the magnitude and gravity of the damage done to so many lives. we showed no care for the little ones. we abandoned them. those are the kinds of words people in churches across the country have been waiting to hear from pope francis since this grand jury report came out. >> words matter but what matters more is action. what will the church do? so do we know that yet? >> the pope addresses that in this letter.
7:04 am
there's been a lot of talk in the church about whether the global church should adopt the zero tolerance policy that was instituted here in the united states in 2002. that is basically one strike and you're out. if there's a credible accusation, that you're accused of abusing a child, you are out. we saw that in the case of cardinal mccarrick when an altar boy came forward decades later. it was just one credible allegation, he was removed from ministry. the pope said they delayed on these actions, but he now thinks that these actions could guarantee the prevention of abuse in the future. that's what they are looking for. you can't do anything about the past. you can offer comfort. you can offer counsel. you can apologize, and that's what he's done in this letter. but the real challenge is how do you prevent this abuse going forward? how do you ensure parents will not be abused by the men who

lead this church. >> the tenner of that statement so strong. i think people wanted to hear real shame, real repentance. >> really apology. real contrition and it's in that letter. >> anne, thank you very much on the breaking news. >> also this morning, new developments in the russia investigation on just who is talking to robert mueller's team and that odd declaration from president trump's attorney rudy giuliani that truth isn't truth. kristen welker at the white house with all this. hi, kristen, good morning. >> hoda, good morning to you. the president's attorney rudy giuliani made that stunning statement "truth isn't truth" on "meet the press." it came after the counsel is cooperating extensively with the special counsel. giuliani saying he believes mcgahn's interviews will support the president but also acknowledging he has no way of knowing everything that mcgahn told investigators. >> reporter: this morning, the president is escalating his attacks again.
7:06 am
>> mr. president, are you concerned about what don mcgahn told the special counsel? >> reporter: after white house counsel don mcgahn has given 30 hours of testimony to special counsel robert mueller, reportedly providing new information to investigators, who were looking into whether president trump obstructed justice. "the new york times" made a story that made it seem like white house counsel had turned on the president when, in fact, it is just the opposite, insisting he allowed him and all others to testify. the president's personal attorney rudy giuliani backing him up. >> the president encouraged him to testify, is happy that he did. >> reporter: giuliani also throwing cold water on the idea of president trump sitting down with mueller's team, arguing the special counsel is setting mr. trump up for a perjury trap and raising eyebrows with this exchange on "meet the press". >> when you tell me that, you know, he should testify because he's going to tell the truth and he shouldn't worry. well, that's so silly because

lawyer but also his former fixer, is being investigated for bank fraud in excess of $20 million. they're also looking into whether cohen violated campaign finance laws by helping to allegedly pay off women including adult film star actress stormy daniels who said they had affairs with the president, allegations the president vehemently denied. the president is of course watching this very closely as you know he's been attacking cohen ever since his attorney indicated cohen could cooperate with investigators in new york and the special counsel. now, the threat of serious charges could raise the pressure on cohen to do exactly that. no response from the u.s. attorney or cohen's lawyer about all of this, savannah and hoda. >> kristen at the white house. kristen, thanks. now we move to a string of unsolved, violent crimes that have the city of nashville on edge. less than two weeks, three people have been murdered, another person was shot and paralyzed from the waist down and three others have been robbed at gunpoint. is there a connection? nbc's gabe gutierrez is in

stephanie gosk has more on this. steph, good morning. >> good morning. in the months that followed asia's revelations about weinstein last october, she reportedly quietly arranged to pay her own accuser, jimmy bennett, a young actor and rock musician, claims he was sexually assaulted by argento in a colorado hotel when he was 17 years old, she was 37. the age of consent in california is 17. >> reporter: overnight, shocking new allegations against one of the metoo movements most prominent voices, "the new york times" reporting italian actress and director asia argento, the former girlfriend of anthony bourdain arranged to pay $380,000 to jimmy bennett, after the actor claimed he was sexually assaulted in a california hotel room in 2013 when he was just 17. the payment arrangement allegedly made not long after argento herself publicly accused hollywood producer harvey weinstein of rape and sexual assault. the new claim detailed in
7:15 am
documents sent to the times through encrypted e-mail says argento was both a mentor and a mother figure to bennett and the two were intermittn'tly in contact as he grew up. bennett began acting at age 6. he was cast at age 7 to play the 2004 film the heart is deceitful above all things. >> you will not trash this house. the documents characterized by the times as legal agreement between lawyers described bennett's version of the encounter. they have not been seen or verified independently by nbc news. on may 9th, 2013, bennett said he arrived at the hotel for a family member for a reunion with argento. after asking the family member to leave so she could be alone with the actor, bennett said argento gave him alcohol and a series of notes she had written to him on hotel stationary. documents say argento then kissed bennett, removing his pants and performing oral sex before having sex with him.
7:16 am
later that day, she posted to instagram, happiest day of my life, reunion with jimmy bennett. the two had lunch. but later bennett began feeling, quote, extremely confused, mortified and disgusted. according to "new york times" in an april letter addressed to argento confirming the final deal, the payment is characterized as, quote, helping mr. bennett. argento became a leading voice in the #metoo movement after telling new yorker weinstein raped her in 1997 when she was 21. weinstein faces multiple charges of sexual assault and rape, none including argento. but he denies all allegations of nonconsensual sex. >> steph, what will this mean for the harvey weinstein case. do you think? >> well, it's important to know that argento is not involved in the criminal charges here in new york. there are two ongoing criminal investigations, one in london and one in l.a. we don't know the details. those investigations whether they will result in charges themselves. so it's a little unclear. >> this all came about a tip to a newspaper.
