>> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." thank you for joining us on a wednesday morning. a lot of mornings we say it's a busy day but it is really a busy day. >> absolutely. >> a lot of developments to get to. it was a stunning split screen moment in two courtrooms, and it is intensifying legal and political pressure on the president this morning. here in new york michael cohen, the president's former attorney, most loyal aide pleading guilty to campaign finance charges, among others, saying he coordinated with then candidate trump to buy the silence of two women alleging affairs. and at the very same time the president's former campaign chair paul manafort was in a virginia court being convicted on eight felony counts stemming from the special counsel's russia investigation. while all that was playing out, facebook announced it has uncovered a new campaign with
7:03 am
links directly to russia and iran to spread misinformation ahead of the midterm elections in mid november. we've got every aspect covered this morning, and we're going to talk to michael cohen's attorney about the claims michael cohen is making and what he is about to tell prosecutors about the president. let's start with nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson on the north lawn of the white house. hallie, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. today michael cohen's lawyer said he is ready to tell all. frankly, cohen has already said plenty in a federal courtroom. for years cohen's job was to handle problems for his former boss but now he's become the problem for the president. >> from confidante to criminal, the president's former fixer flipping on him with new fallout as the president suggests sympathy for michael cohen. >> i feel make up stories in order to get a deal. >> from confidant to criminal. the president's former fixer
7:04 am
flipping on him with new fallout now as the president suggests sympathy for michael cohen. >> i feel badly. >> reporter: feeling badly for both, the president says, apparently referring not just to paul manafort but cohen, too. the man who walked into manhattan court admitting he broke the law by donald trump told him too, implicating a sitting president in a serious crime. cohen's attorney lanny davis. >> there's a coverup here by our now president of the united states that is undeniable. he directed michael cohen to make this payment of $130,000. >> reporter: cohen now faces 3.5 to 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud, and notably campaign finance violations including illegal payoffs to keep two women quiet about alleged affairs with donald trump. affairs he denies. one of those payments, $130,000 to porn star stormy daniels. made 11 days before the 2016
7:05 am
election. the president has insisted he had no idea about the hush money at the time. >> did you know about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels? why did michael cohen make that -- >> you have to ask michael cohen. michael's my attorney and you'll have to ask michael. >> do you know where he got the money? >> no, i don't know. >> reporter: the president's lawyer later acknowledging he paid the money back. >> and the president repaid him. oh. i didn't know he did. >> yes. >> reporter: and now daniels and her attorney say daniel's plea deal vindicates them. the message i would send to the president of the unite, prepare. you're in a lot of trouble. >> reporter: the president's legal team doesn't think so. rudy giuliani tells nbc news, no allegation of any wrongdoing against the president in the government's charges against mr. cohen. it is clear that as the prosecutor noticed, mr. cohen's actions reflect a pattern of
7:06 am
lies and dishonesty over a significant period of time. but president trump didn't always think cohen was a liar. in his public comments over the last couple years. >> michael cohen is a talented lawyer, a good lawyer. >> i always liked michael. he's a good person. >> reporter: cohen worked for donald trump for about a decade, privy to his most sensitive and legal and business dealings. even though he recently said his family and country comes first, he once memorably declared he'd take a bum it for his boss. now, he's taking a deal instead. bottom line, at nearly every donald trump rally in 2016 you heard the chant "lock her up" since election day five people close to the president convicted of breaking the law. savannah? >> hallie jackson, thank you. lanny davis is with us now. >> good morning. >> your client wednesday famously said he would take a bullet for donald trump.
7:07 am
seems in a sense he is the bullet. does he have damaging information against the president and is he willing to tell it to prosecutors? >> he said under oath the most damaging definitive information yesterday that the president of the united states directed him to commit a crime, meaning the president committed the crime and covered it up, because he didn't sign the check to keep quiet the affairs with the two women. he asked, directed is the word used michael cohen to do so. in case there's a problem understanding, there's no dispute on the word "direction." his attorneys wrote the special counsel and said that president trump directed michael cohen to do this. so the issue of whether he's credible or not has no relevance here. his lawyers are his witnesses against the president as complicit in this crime. >> let me ask you, because -- michael cohen, it's his word, as you say, rudy giuliani seems to
7:08 am
back that up with fire statements saying, yes, in fact, the president knew that these payments to the porn star, the hush money, were being made, but does he have any other evidence? anything to corroborate is? documents? >> yes. >> he does? what kind of evidence? >> 100% definitive. the fog of rudy giuliani who says truth isn't truth is creating, simply contradicted by the president's own lawyers, wrote a letter to the special counsel. >> but over and above -- >> that is evidence definitively where your own lawyers testify against the client, that's called definitive evidence. they said to the special counsel, president trump directed, the word was used in court yesterday. there's no dispute on that. >> i get that. anything else? documents, recordings, anything else? >> i don't know the answer to that question. we'll see whether there's other evidence, but i am saying that right now michael cohen needs
7:09 am
help from the american people to tell the truth, and we've set up a website, michael cohen, truth funt dotcom to the go fund me si -- gofundme site and president trump's lawyers are corroborated what michael cohen said. >> talk about michael cohen. for years and years, thick as thieves with donald trump. again, saying, i'll take a bullet for him. what's changed? he's admitting things he previously denied publicly. had did he turn on donald trump and why? >> gradually after the election and when he called me, we talked about almost nothing but that question, that very important question. he's turned his life from what he did for donald trump, much of which he now regrets, and would love to do re-dos, but he decided fundamentally that his family and his country were his
7:10 am
priorities, when he first was interviewed by another network, he said that, and that's the turn in his life hitting the reset button to tell the truth from now on, and what caused that is a complicated evolution, but he certainly found donald trump as president to be unsuitable to hold the office after helsinki. he worried about the future of our country with somebody who was aligning himself with mr. putin in denying what his entire intelligence community, his own appointees have said is an indisputable fact that putin interfered with our presidential election on behalf of donald trump and he still denies that, that's the kind of thing that caused michael cohen to change his mind and decide to dedicate himself to telling the truth to the american people, and we have set up a website, michael cohen, truth fund dotcom, to help him and his family get through this
7:11 am
while he tells the truth about donald trump. >> last question. there's one person who could make michael cohen's legal problems go away in an instant. it's donald trump. is he hoping for a pardon from president trump? >> nome not hoping for, he would not accept a pardon. he considers a pardon from somebody who acted oh xrucorrup as president to be something he would nsher accept. >> lanny davis, thank you for your time. appreciate it. a lot to talk about from that interview and do that with chuck todd and pete williams just ahead. first, other courtroom drama tied to this. a jury convicted president trump's former campaign chair paul manafort on fraud charges. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the conviction of paul manafort is another blow positive trto p trump and manafort among the first charged as a part of the special counsel investigation and now mueller can claim a win in court despite sustained
7:12 am
attacks by president trump. overnight, the president in west virginia, energizing the trudge faithful with a familiar line of attack. >> fake news and the russian witch hunt. we got a whole, big combination. where is the collusion? >> reporter: but just hours earlier, real results for the special counsel. a jury found former trump campaign chair paul manafort guilty on 8 of 18 criminal counts, unable to agree on the other 10. the convictions related to fraud and financial crimes, activity that took place before manafort stint on the campaign, a point mr. trump stressed tuesday. >> it doesn't involve me but i still feel, it's a very sad thing that happened. this has nothing to do with russian collusion. this started as russian collusion. this is absolutely nothing to do. it's a witch hunt and a disgrace. >> reporter: prosecutors argued
7:13 am
from 2010 to 2014 manafort earned more than $30 million but reported less than half of that as income. money earned as a political consultant for the former pro-russian president of ukraine. prosecutors also showed manafort stashed the money in overseas banks, buying expensive clothes, antiques and cars, bipassing the irs and they say when the ukrainian money dried up, manafort lied in applying for more than $20 million in loans to fund his lavish lifestyle. >> mr. manafort is disappointed of not getting acquittals all the way through or a complete hung jury on all counts. >> reporter: for months, president trump has distanced himself from his former campaign chair. >> paul manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. >> reporter: manafort served on the trump campaign about five moss including three as the campaign chair overseeing the critical stretch during the republican national convention. the president recently asked if he plans to pardon him. >> will you pardon paul manafort?
7:14 am
>> i don't talk about that. i don't talk about that. >> reporter: now, manafort faces more than ten years in prison and faces a second trial right here in d.c. next month. we will obviously be watching this very closely. this could be critical for president trump and on that second trial he faces a slew of charges including failing to register as a foreign lobbyist, hoda and savannah. >> kristen welker the white house, thanks. dive into this. political and legal ramifications facing the president. chuck todd is here for the politics, nbc justice correspondent pete williams for the legal beagle stuff. good morning. >> we need chuck-speak on this. seemed like a huge bombshell, chuck yesterday. tell us what it means politically for trump. >> what it could mean. it could mean you now have the president of the united states accused of committing a federal crime. the way a functional washington would work is that congress, there is a process here. the sitting president is accused of a crime, the judiciary committee and house of
7:15 am
representatives would begin to look to see if there's enough evidence to start investigating and drawing up articles of impeachment, but this is not a functional congress. this is a congress controlled by republicans. they'd have to do this on their own president, but i have to tell you. i think there is going to be increased political heat and a divided republican party. those that are fearing trump as a drag and then those that know that his base is there to the end. >> chuck, quickly, this issue of impeachment. all of this comes down to the midterm elections. if democrats retake the house, then they can attempt to impeach the president. so is this going to in some way be like the only issue in the midterms going forward? >> i think it's possible. i think the president may even embrace it. i think there is this misguided idea among some republicans if you make this somehow that the president is the center here and it's, you know -- and if you don't get out to vote, democrats are going to get him and somehow
7:16 am
that might fire up his base, but i have to tell you this. i do think paul ryan needs to think long and hard about the future of the republican party. this is your last chance off this train. it looks like manafort and cohen only have more to say. only may cooperate more. this could get worse. ryan's retiring. i think he actually could do the party a favor and if you just start the procedure in the house judiciary committee, you give some place for republicans getting nervous to say, you know what? let's start an investigation and go from there. >> check out the legal side of this. pete williams. pete, we know a sitting president cannot be charged or indicted. so what legally can happen to the president? >> well, that's the general thought. remember, for anybody but the president the answer is almost certainly that he could be charged with a crime. if you commit a crime and i told you to do it i could be charged with conspiracy, but there is a long-standing view at the justice department. in written formal opinions under
7:17 am
both democratic and republican administrations that a sitting president can't be charged with a crime. why? well, the easiest way think about this. can't have a president running the country while he's in court or in prison. robert mueller is special counsel still bound by those justice department opinions just as any other federal prosecutor is. at this point seems unlikely the president could be charged with a crime for what michael cohen says the president told him to do leaving it to the political branchs to do whatever. what we talked to chuck about. and pete, convicted of eight of the 1 counts, manafort. faces another trial. is this a moment where he could look at himself and say, hmm. maybe i ought to sit down with the special prosecutor and tell him what i know? or has that ship sailed? is that option available to him? >> i think that hmm moment came earlier in february when rick gates decided to cooperate with mueller and pleaded guilty. manafort decided not to do that.
7:18 am
he's shown absolutely no inclination to do that. whether the conviction focuses the mind, that's possible. remember, he's got another trial coming up next month on very similar charges. maybe he'll think about it after that. but so far he hasn't shown any sign, and back on impeachment for a moment. one thing to remember, these are things that happened before the president was the president. it was during the campaign. and many legal scholars who thought about this say impeachment implies only to official acts in office. can you impeach someone for something they did before they became a public official? who knows's it could seem the answer is, no, as gerald ford once said, impeachment is whatever the house says it is. >> exactly. something lawyers love to argue about. great to have you both. thank you. time for a first check of the weather. mr. roker a at the wall. >> looking at something very unusual right now. talking about a pacific hurricane that might hit hawaii. hurricane lane. category 5 storm.
